Description

Seismic shifts in the religious and secular landscapes are destabilizing the faith of millions. Join religious educator Jared Halverson as he explores restored scripture, doctrine, history, and practice; examines patterns and pitfalls in navigating faith crisis; and wrestles with ways to make your faith unshaken. ___________ Hello my friends, I’m Jared Halverson and this is Unshaken. I’ve spent my life studying the scriptures, my professional career teaching them, and my education at a Bible-belt divinity school exploring ways they have been used and abused, attacked and defended. And I’d like to share with you some of the things I’ve learned. In March of 2020 I created a YouTube channel called Unshaken, and six months later we hit our one millionth view, as people around the world are eagerly pursuing an unshaken faith in God by immersing themselves in His word. More and more viewers have been asking for an audio-only version of the lessons on Unshaken, and this podcast is my attempt to meet those needs. What it lacks in the visuals shown on YouTube, or the polished sound of a podcast-only production, it hopefully makes up for in its accessibility to the drivers, joggers, and multi-taskers out there who want to study their scriptures “on the go.” To you, welcome to our verse-by-verse, Come Follow Me study of the scriptures. I pray that it helps your faith in Christ become unshaken. __________ Disclaimer: The content of these podcasts is the sole responsibility of their creator and does not reflect the official position of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or the Church Educational System.

Isaiah 58-66: To Bind Up the Brokenhearted
2026/10/12
What if the trials, heartaches, and mistakes of your life aren't the end of your story, but the exact raw materials God uses to build your future? In Isaiah 58–66, the grand finale of Isaiah's ministry, the Lord delivers His ultimate masterclass on redemption: He does not offer empty positive thinking—He offers to take the very ashes of our lives and transform them into celestial beauty. Summary: In this concluding deep dive into the Book of Isaiah (Chapters 58–66), we explore the glorious resolution of Israel’s prophetic symphony. Moving past the tragic consequences of apostasy, Isaiah pulls back the veil on the Restoration, the sacred laws of the fast and the Sabbath, and the breathtaking reality of the Second Coming and the Millennium. The True Fast & The Sabbath Delight: In Isaiah 58, the Lord exposes empty ritualism that fasts for strife while oppressing workers. We discover how true fasting looses the bands of wickedness, feeds the hungry, and turns our homes into "repairers of the breach," while honoring the Sabbath transforms our spiritual tastebuds. The Armor of God & The Intercessor: In Isaiah 59, we confront a society where "truth is fallen in the street". When no mortal is found willing to stand up, the Lord puts on righteousness as a breastplate and garments of zeal, declaring that His arm is never too short to save. Arise, Shine, for Thy Light Is Come: In Isaiah 60, we witness the gathering of Israel as nations and kings flow to the light of Zion, returning like homing doves to their windows and transforming former desolate outposts into cities whose walls are Salvation and whose gates are Praise. The Nazareth Manifesto: In Isaiah 61, we step into the exact passage Jesus read in the Nazareth synagogue to announce His messiahship (Luke 4). We explore the divine exchange: beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, and the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness. Hephzibah, Beulah, & Robes of Reminding Red: In Isaiah 62–63, the Lord renames His covenant people from "Forsaken" to "My Delight Is in Her," promising to run to our defense. We analyze the powerful imagery of the Savior treading the winepress alone in dyed garments from Bozrah—wearing our crimson stains so we can wear His pure white robes. New Heavens, a New Earth, & Maternal Comfort: We finish with Isaiah 64–66, submitting ourselves as clay to the Potter, anticipating the Millennial day when sorrow is forgotten, and finding peace in Isaiah's favorite metaphor: a God who dandles and comforts His children just like a nursing mother. Call-to-Action In Isaiah 61:3, the Lord promises to give us "beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness". Isaiah 50-57: "Man of Sorrows"
2026/10/06
What do you do when you feel broken, barren, or like your life doesn’t fit the idealized mold of a covenant family? In Isaiah 50–57, the prophet pulls back the veil to reveal the Suffering Servant—a Savior who bore our griefs, carried our sorrows, and promises that no soul is ever beyond the reach of His redeeming arm. Summary: In this transformative episode, we explore the sacred heart of the Book of Isaiah. These chapters form the golden thread woven straight through the Book of Mormon—taught by Jacob, quoted by Abinadi before King Noah, and expounded by the resurrected Christ Himself. We move from the bitter agony of the cross to the soaring celebration of covenant gathering, discovering how the Savior's infinite mercy meets us in our deepest wounds. The God Who's Got Your Back: In Isaiah 50, the Lord asks why we think He has divorced us or sold us to creditors. We see the Savior giving His back to the smiters and setting His face like a flint, showing the perfect balance of submission before the Father and unwavering strength against the world. Awake, Put On Thy Beautiful Garments: In Isaiah 51–52, the call shifts from waking God to waking ourselves. We analyze the priesthood keys explained in D&C 113, the beauty of those who publish peace on the mountains, and what it truly means to bear the vessels of the Lord without hasty, toxic perfectionism. The Suffering Servant Masterclass: We step into the throneroom of the Atonement in Isaiah 53. We unpack why Abinadi used this exact text in Mosiah 14–15 to reveal Christ's seed—those who look to Him for healing, recognizing that He was wounded for our transgressions and bruised for our iniquities. Enlarge the Place of Thy Tent: In Isaiah 54 (quoted directly by Jesus in 3 Nephi 22), the Lord comforts the barren, the bereaved, and the forsaken, promising that although He hid His face for a small moment, with everlasting kindness He will gather us with foundations of sapphires. Buy Without Money and Without Price: In Isaiah 55, the Savior invites every thirsty soul to stop spending labor on that which satisfies not, reminding us that His higher ways include a capacity to abundantly pardon that far surpasses human scorekeeping. A Place and a Name (Yad Vashem): We conclude with Isaiah 56–57, where the Lord makes stunning promises to the stranger and the eunuch. Discover how the temple provides an everlasting place and name better than sons or daughters, gathering every outcast who chooses the things that please God. Isaiah 36-49: "Come Ye My People"
2026/09/28
Have you ever felt completely forgotten, as though life has scattered your hopes, leaving you wondering if the Lord's promises still apply to you? In Isaiah 36–49, right after the heartbreaking collapse and scattering of ancient Israel, the Lord refuses to say "I told you so". Instead, He opens His mouth with the most merciful command in scripture: "Comfort ye, comfort ye my people". Summary: In this transformative episode, we journey through the central turning point of the Book of Isaiah. We bridge the historical prose of King Hezekiah's miraculous deliverance with the soaring poetry of redemption, discovering how the God who measures the universe in the hollow of His hand is the very same Savior who carries us from the womb to our old age. The Prose Interlude: We analyze Isaiah 36–39, following Hezekiah as he lays Rabshakeh’s terrifying letters before the Lord in the temple, experiences the sudden destruction of 185,000 Assyrian troops without firing an arrow, and pens his deeply raw psalm after having his life extended by 15 years. The High Note of Comfort: In Isaiah 40, we explore the dramatic tonal shift where justice yields to tender mercy ("Comfort ye"). We examine the voice crying in the wilderness to build straight desert highways, and discover how waiting upon the Lord enables the weary to mount up with wings as eagles. The Incomparable God vs. Carry-On Idols: In Isaiah 44–46, we unpack Isaiah’s razor-sharp satire against homemade gods carved from ordinary firewood. We contrast lifeless idols that must be carried by tired beasts with the living God who promises: "Even to your old age... will I carry you". Cyrus the Anointed Deliverer: We study the astounding prophecy in Isaiah 45, exploring how the Lord called a Persian king by name over a century in advance, using an outsider as a messianic type to break iron bars and free His covenant people. The Original Book of Mormon Chapters: We dive into Isaiah 48–49 (quoted by Nephi in 1 Nephi 20–21), analyzing why Nephi chose these specific texts to persuade us to believe in our Redeemer and find hope in our own "furnace of affliction". Graven on His Palms: We conclude with the breathtaking imagery of Isaiah 49, where a nursing mother’s devotion pales in comparison to the Savior's love. We see how Christ's retained wounds testify that pain is not evidence of abandonment, and witness the joyous, overcrowded reunion of gathered Israel where empty homes overflow with children. Call-to-Action: In Isaiah 49:16, the Savior reassures us: "Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of my hands; thy walls are continually before me". Isaiah 13-35: Isaiah Foresees the Apostasy and Restoration
2026/09/21
What do you do when the world around you seems to be spinning into chaos, noise, and spiritual deception? In Isaiah 13–35, the prophet looks past the rising superpowers of his day to deliver a sweeping message for our modern world: Babylon will fall, but Zion will stand! If you have ever felt overwhelmed by the weight of the last days, this masterclass reveals why you can hang every hope upon the Savior and know that He will hold. Summary: In this deep dive into Isaiah 13–35, we walk through the profound prophetic chapters that Nephi loved, lived, and quoted throughout the Book of Mormon. Moving from the tragic doom of ancient empires to the breathtaking promises of the Latter-day Restoration, these chapters demonstrate the stark contrast between worldly pride and covenant safety. The Fall of Babylon & Lucifer: In Isaiah 13–14, we analyze the prophetic "burdens" of ancient superpowers, tracing the pride cycle from premortality to the end of the world. We examine how Lucifer sought to exalt his throne above the stars, only to be cast down into the pit while the whole earth breaks forth into singing. The Nail in a Sure Place: In Isaiah 22, we compare the self-aggrandizing treasurer Shebna with the righteous servant Eliakim, discovering how Eliakim stands as an exquisite type of Jesus Christ—clothed with authority, carrying the key of the house of David, and fastened as a nail in a sure place upon which all our hopes can safely hang. The Feast of Fat Things: We explore the apocalyptic songs of Isaiah 24–26, looking at how worldly merriment turns hollow during apostasy, and how the Lord promises to swallow up death in victory, wipe away tears from every face, and keep those in perfect peace whose minds are stayed on Him. The Sure Foundation vs. The Short Bed: In Isaiah 28, we contrast the Lord's "tried stone" and sure foundation against the world's refuge of lies—a spiritual trap likened to sleeping on a bed too short to stretch out on and wrapping up in a blanket too narrow to cover you. A Marvelous Work and a Wonder: We unpack the restoration prophecy of Isaiah 29, exploring the voice whispering low out of the dust, the words of the sealed book delivered to the learned and unlearned, and the Lord's power to cause the deaf to hear and the blind to see out of obscurity. The Highway of Holiness: We conclude with the radiant hope of Isaiah 35, witnessing the solitary wilderness rejoice and blossom as the rose, where the ransomed of the Lord return to Zion with songs of everlasting joy upon their heads. Call-to-Action: In Isaiah 22:23, the Lord promises to fasten His servant as "a nail in a sure place," holding up all the vessels of His Father's house. Isaiah 1-12: Great Are the Words of Isaiah
2026/09/13
The Savior commanded us to search the words of Isaiah with diligence, declaring that "great are the words of Isaiah". Yet for so many readers, Isaiah feels like a locked door or a foreign language. If you’ve ever felt intimidated by the poetic imagery, the rapid shifts in tone, or the complex geopolitical history, Isaiah 1–12 provides the ultimate key to unlock the entire book. Summary: In this opening study of Isaiah, we break down the poetic genius, the historical context, and the multi-layered prophecies of ancient Israel's greatest prophetic poet. Using Nephi’s keys from 2 Nephi 25, we uncover how Isaiah’s warnings to ancient Judah directly reflect the modern world and testify of the coming Messiah. Nephi’s Five Keys & The Isaiah Layer Cake: We explain how to decode Hebrew poetic parallelism, chiasmus, and imagery, exploring how Isaiah's prophecies operate on three distinct timelines simultaneously: his day, the meridian of time, and the last days. The Lawsuit Against Israel: In Isaiah 1, God summons heaven and earth as witnesses against His rebellious children, calling out empty ritualism ("vain oblations") while offering the breathtaking promise of scarlet sins made white as snow. The Mountain of the Lord's House: We examine the temple prophecy of Isaiah 2, exploring how all nations "flow uphill" into Zion to learn of God's ways, beat swords into plowshares, and escape the false security of worldly towers and high walls. The Parable of the Vineyard: In Isaiah 5, we walk through the tragic song of the well-beloved whose fruitful vineyard brought forth wild grapes, dissecting the modern cultural peril of "calling evil good, and good evil". The Throneroom Vision & Cleansing Coal: We witness Isaiah’s sacred calling in Isaiah 6, feeling the raw inadequacy of a man of unclean lips who is purified by a live altar coal before declaring: "Here am I; send me". Immanuel, the Prince of Peace, & the Stem of Jesse: We untangle the Syro-Ephraimite War in Isaiah 7–8, the royal messianic titles in Isaiah 9, and the profound restoration revelations of Isaiah 11 regarding the Stem, Branch, Rod, and Root of Jesse. Call-to-Action: In Isaiah 6:8, when the Lord asks, "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?", Isaiah steps forward despite feeling broken and unworthy. Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon: The Beginning of Wisdom
2026/09/09
King Solomon had unmatched wealth, 3,000 proverbs, and all the pleasures mortality could buy—yet in the end, he wrestled with the haunting realization that worldly pursuits are nothing but "vanity of vanities." If you've ever felt cynical, burned out by work, or wondered where true purpose is found, the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament holds the eternal answers you need. Summary: In this episode, we study Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon, examining the contrast between the actionable principles of Proverbs and the raw, existential realism of Ecclesiastes. Moving through practical daily adages, profound philosophical dilemmas, and ancient love poetry, we uncover what it truly means to "get wisdom" and build a life anchored in God. The Foundation of Knowledge: We analyze Proverbs 1–3, learning why the "fear of the Lord" is the true starting point of understanding, and what it means to trust God rather than leaning on our own limited perspective. Personified Wisdom: We explore the voice of "Mother Wisdom" (Sophia) in Proverbs 8–9, discovering her premortal presence alongside the Creator and her open invitation to feast at her table. The Strength of Womanhood: We deconstruct Proverbs 31, moving past cultural stereotypes to celebrate a woman of strength, entrepreneurship, wisdom, and charity who honors the Lord. The Preacher's Crisis: We walk through the "scriptural pessimism" of Ecclesiastes 1–11, testing pleasure, wealth, popularity, and intellectual accomplishment to see why none of them can satisfy the eternal soul. A Time for Every Purpose: We study the rhythmic seasons of life in Ecclesiastes 3, finding peace in the Swedish concept of lagom ("just the right amount") and learning to do our daily homework while leaving the exam grades to God. The Whole Duty of Man: We arrive at the climax of Ecclesiastes 12:13—"Fear God, and keep his commandments"—and discover how the Song of Solomon points our deepest devotions toward the pure love of Jesus Christ. Call-to-Action: In Proverbs 3:5–6, we are invited to acknowledge God in all our ways so He can direct our paths. The Book of Psalms (101-150) - Giving Your Heart to God
2026/08/30
What do you do when you find yourself in a "strange land"—feeling spiritually homesick, weary from the climb, or wondering if you've wandered too far from the presence of God? In Psalms 101–150, the Psalter reaches its majestic, final crescendo, providing an unbroken anthem of mercy, divine guidance, and transcendent praise. Summary: In this concluding study of the Book of Psalms (Chapters 101–150), we explore the sacred culmination of ancient Israel's worship. From David's personal covenant to walk with integrity within his own home, to the grand 176-verse acrostic ode to the scriptures in Psalm 119, these chapters teach us how to transform every trial into "one more strain of praise." The King’s Standard: We analyze Psalm 101, looking at David’s 12-part pledge to set "no wicked thing" before his eyes and create a sanctuary of righteousness within his home. As Far as the East Is from the West: We dive into Psalm 103, examining the infinite reach of God’s tender mercies and His divine understanding that "we are dust". The Cornerstone and the Hosanna: We unpack the Messianic majesty of Psalms 110 and 118, discovering how the rejected stone became the head of the corner and exploring the ancient background of the Triumphal Entry. The A-to-Z of Scripture Study: We deconstruct Psalm 119, the ultimate 22-stanza Hebrew acrostic, uncovering how hiding God's word in our hearts creates an internal lamp that keeps us from stumbling in the dark. The Songs of Ascent: We journey through Psalms 120–134, the ancient pilgrimage hymns sung as travelers ascended toward the temple in Jerusalem, discovering how to find peace in times of war and reap in joy after sowing in tears. The Final Doxology: We finish with Psalms 145–150, exploring the final five Hallelujah psalms and learning why Psalm 150 calls on every single instrument, element of creation, and "every thing that hath breath" to praise the Lord. Call-to-Action: Psalm 139 reminds us that whether we ascend to heaven or make our bed in hell, the hand of the Lord is still there to lead and hold us. The Book of Psalms (49-100) - Songs of the Heart
2026/08/25
What do you do when your sins feel too heavy to carry, when your closest friends turn against you, or when you look at the world and wonder why the wicked seem to prosper while the faithful suffer? In Psalms 49–101, the psalmists give voice to our rawest cries, leading us from the depths of personal brokenness straight into the healing sanctuary of God. Summary: In this moving exploration of Psalms 49–101, we walk through the second major collection of the Hebrew Psalter. Moving between searing prayers of confession and breathtaking anthems of praise, these chapters provide an emotional and spiritual compass for every trial of mortality. The Agony of Confession: We dissect Psalm 51, David’s brokenhearted plea after Nathan confronted him regarding Bathsheba. We examine what it means to offer a "broken and a contrite heart," asking God not just for a pardon, but to "create in me a clean heart". The Sting of Betrayal: In Psalm 55, we explore David’s lament over being betrayed not by an open enemy, but by an equal and trusted companion—a passage that powerfully foreshadows Judas's betrayal of Jesus Christ. Envy and the Sanctuary Perspective: We study Asaph’s crisis of faith in Psalm 73, where his feet almost slipped while envying the ease of the worldly—until he entered the sanctuary of God and understood their end. Tears in a Bottle & God's Memory: We dive into Psalm 56, discovering the tender truth that God numbers our wanderings, stores our tears in His bottle, and never leaves us to face mortality alone. Divine Potential and Council: We analyze Psalm 82, exploring the divine council and the Savior's quotation of verse 6 ("Ye are gods") to understand the balance between human humility and divine heritage. Entering His Gates with Praise: We conclude with the exuberant joy of Psalm 100, examining the seven invitations to worship and the remarkable story of how the Spirit prompted B. H. Roberts to read this exact psalm in a moment of public trial. Call-to-Action: When your heart feels overwhelmed, David pleads: "Lead me to the rock that is higher than I" (Psalm 61:2). The Book of Psalms (1-48) - The Lord Is My Shepherd
2026/08/18
When life hits you with grief, disorientation, or feeling utterly forsaken by God, prose often falls short. The Book of Psalms gives us a sacred language to pour out our hearts—whether we are crying out "Help!", singing "Thanks!", or standing in awe of "Wow!" Summary: In this inspiring study of Psalms 1–48, we step out of historical analysis and into the sanctuary of the heart. Often called the "Preface of Jesus Christ," the Psalter offers a timeless collection of prayers, hymns, and prophecies that directly mirror the Savior's life, death, and resurrection. Music as a Lowest and Highest Gear: We explore how David's music soothed Saul's troubled soul and why singing the "song of the heart" is recognized by the Lord as a form of pure prayer. Tree Planted by the Waters vs. Chaff: We analyze Psalm 1, contrasting the deep-rooted disciple who meditates on God's law day and night with the wind-blown "chaff" of ungrounded philosophies. Psalms of Disorientation: We look at David's raw, unfiltered prayers during his lowest moments—such as fleeing from his son Absalom in Psalm 3—and discover how to hold onto hope when family relationships fracture. The Crucifixion Blueprint: We step into the agonizing Messianic prophecies of Psalms 21 and 22, discovering why Jesus uttered the opening line of Psalm 22 ("My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?") while hanging on the cross. The Good Shepherd & The Temple Gate: We savor the poetic imagery of Psalm 23 and the temple entrance requirements of Psalm 24 ("clean hands and a pure heart"). Be Still and Know: We conclude with the quiet sanctuary of Psalms 46–48, learning how to slow down, disconnect from constant distractions, and find Zion in our daily lives. Call-to-Action: The monk John Cassian counseled his brothers to recite the Psalms not as the words of David, but as "your very own prayer." The Book of Job - A Sermon on Suffering
2026/08/13
What do you do when you’ve kept your covenants, guarded your heart, served the poor, and lived with absolute integrity—yet your whole world collapses anyway? In this complete, deep-dive masterclass on the Book of Job, we trace the entire arc of human suffering, theological wrestling, and divine revelation, discovering how a man sitting in ashes moved from raw questioning to the ultimate witness: "I know that my Redeemer liveth." Summary of the Video: This comprehensive guide walks step-by-step through the 42 chapters of the Book of Job. We begin in the pre-mortal council, exploring why God allows the "hedge" of protection to be lowered and why "divine restraint" is an act of love designed to build spiritual muscle. We analyze the four crushing waves of loss that wiped out Job’s wealth, health, and ten children, offering a compassionate look at Job’s grief and the silent ministry of his three friends. We then unpack the core conflict: the breakdown of "Retribution Theology" (the false idea that sin always equals suffering). We follow the three rounds of intense debate between Job and his accusers, exploring Job’s desperate plea for a "Daysman" (Mediator) and his prophetic shadows of Jesus Christ. Finally, we study Job's final oath of innocence, Elihu’s breakthrough teaching on the refining purpose of trials, God’s breathtaking 59 questions out of the whirlwind, and the profound lessons of Job 42—where intercessory forgiveness for his friends unlocked a double restoration of everything he had lost. Key Doctrinal Insights Included: The Hedged Life & Divine Restraint (Job 1–2): Why God permits trials and how agency requires a space for opposition. The Trap of the Prosperity Gospel (Job 4–27): Why assuming suffering is always caused by personal sin leads to self-righteousness and spiritual collapse. Job as a Type of Christ (Job 16–19): How Job’s unearned agony, betrayal, and crying blood prefigure the Garden of Gethsemane and Calvary. The Search for the "Daysman" (Job 9 & 19): The Old Testament promise of Jesus Christ as our Advocate and Redeemer. The Refining Purpose of Pain (Job 32–37): Elihu's perspective that suffering is a divine classroom to purge pride. Hearing vs. Seeing God (Job 42): How trials convert secondhand theology into firsthand, face-to-face relationship with the Divine. The Lesson of the Book of Job: You don't need a line-by-line explanation for every trial in your life as long as you know the God who holds you in His hands. When you stop demanding explanations and start seeking His presence, your crucible becomes your sanctuary. Call-to-Action: Have you ever experienced a season where God felt silent, but looking back, you realized He was refining your faith into pure gold? The Book of Esther - "For Such a Time as This"
2026/08/09
The Book of Esther never once mentions the name of God—yet His fingerprints are on every page. If you are currently living in enemy territory, wondering if the Lord has forgotten you or if your faith is entirely outnumbered by modern Babylon, this visual and scriptural masterclass reveals exactly why you were held back for such a time as this. Summary: In this powerful and comforting episode, we explore the vibrant, high-stakes narrative of the Book of Esther. Operating as the female equivalent of Joseph in Egypt and Daniel in Babylon, Esther’s journey provides an exquisite template for how the covenant family survives, adapts, and ultimately triumphs when the presence of God feels entirely "masked" behind natural events. The Masks of Purim: We explore the historical and cultural context of Purim, analyzing why the Jewish equivalent of Halloween centers on costumes, hidden identities, and dramatic plot reversals. Agency vs. Objectification: We contrast the quiet strength of Vashti and the child-like submission of Esther against the shallow, unrestricted hedonism of King Ahasuerus's court. The Double Play of Names: We unpack the hidden meanings behind the names Hadassah, Esther, and Mordecai, tracing how Babylon tries to force the world's gods upon us while the Lord silently preserves our true heritage. The Absolute Cavalry of Timing: We dissect Mordecai’s piercing question in Esther 4:14, aligning it with modern temple preparation and the distinct spiritual gifts required for our specific location in history. Enforced Empathy and Gallows: We look at the absolute irony of Haman’s pride, tracking how his self-centered craving for recognition forced him to parade his own rival in royal apparel before falling into the very pit he dug. Two Messianic Figures: We conclude by recasting the story's dual resolution—viewing Esther as a mediator willing to die for her people, and Mordecai as the victorious true leader who refused to bow to worldly idols. Call-to-Action: Esther was forced to step past the letter of the law and approach the inner court of the king relying entirely on faith and the fasting of her people. Ezra and Nehemiah - Rebuilding the Broken
2026/07/29
When the Babylonian captivity finally ended, the returning remnant didn't find a pristine Promised Land—they found cracked foundations, burned gates, and a pile of rubble. If your faith, your marriage, or your sense of identity currently feels like a collection of broken stones, Ezra and Nehemiah provide the ultimate masterclass on how to reconstruct what has been destroyed. Summary: In this powerful episode, we delve into the twin narratives of Ezra and Nehemiah, books that historically stood as a single text detailing the painful, beautiful work of restoration. We map this journey onto the psychological and spiritual landscape of construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction, discovering how the Lord uses common, unnamed people to do the heavy lifting of the kingdom. The Temple and the Wall: We analyze why Ezra focuses on rebuilding the temple (our spiritual center) while Nehemiah focuses on rebuilding the walls (our behavioral boundaries). You cannot safely have one without the other. The Tears of the Ancient Men: We step into the emotional complexity of Ezra 3, where the shouting of the young blends with the weeping of the old. Discover how beauty emerges from ashes when we confront our history with absolute honesty. Samaritan Sabotage: We break down the subtle tactics of Sanballat and Tobiah—the "counselors" hired to frustrate the work through a war of words rather than an open military conflict. Learn how to navigate modern historical half-truths and secular critiques. The Trowel and the Spear: We dissect Nehemiah’s defensive strategy, where workers built with one hand while holding a weapon in the other. We explore our modern duty to build up testimonies while defending the kingdom from relentless intimidation. Saying "Oh No" to Ono: We confront the modern trap of diversion. Nehemiah was targeted with invitations to negotiate in the plain of Ono, but his response stands as a timeless shield against worldly distractions: "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down." The Historical Prayer: We unpack the breathtaking Levitical prayer in Nehemiah 9, tracing how God consistently answers Israel’s structural rebellion with manifold mercies, reminding us that He never closes shop on a repentant soul. Call-to-Action: Nehemiah refused to flee into the temple to save his own skin, recognizing that true covenant leadership requires us to stand our ground with a clear conscience and trust the Master. When the modern adversaries of faith tell you that you are trying to "revive stones out of a heap of rubbish," how do you keep your mind focused on the work? 1-2 Chronicles - Forgotten Stories
2026/07/19
When you look at your life through the lens of your worst mistakes, it can feel like a devastating exile. But what if God chose to rewrite your history, leaving out the wreckage of your past to remind you of who you can become? In this study of 1 & 2 Chronicles, we uncover the ultimate "highlight reel" of scripture—a book written not to say "I told you so," but to declare that your punishment is past and your restoration has begun. Summary: In this deep-dive episode, we unpack the unique theological genius of 1 & 2 Chronicles. While the books of Samuel and Kings offer the brutal raw history of Israel’s failures leading into Babylon, Chronicles was compiled after the exile to bind up the wounds of a broken people and point them toward the temple and the coming Messiah. The Synoptic History: We explore why Chronicles acts as a separate, more positive version of Israel's history—similar to how Matthew, Mark, and Luke provide distinct perspectives on the life of Christ. A Perfect and Unified Heart: We analyze David's coronation in Hebron, exploring what it looks like when a community closes ranks with a "perfect heart" to build the kingdom of God. Seeking Beyond Keeping: We break down David's final charge to Solomon, challenging us to not only keep the commandments we have, but to actively seek out the instructions and light we don't yet possess. The Illusion of Sacrifice: We deconstruct the beauty of voluntary giving, reminding ourselves that returning a portion of our time, talents, or tithing to the Lord is never a true loss because "all things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee." The Battle of Praise: We journey into 2 Chronicles 20 to witness King Jehoshaphat’s stunning victory, discovering why placing singers over soldiers and worship over war transforms our "valleys of decision" into "valleys of blessing." The Clean Vessel: We track Hezekiah's urgent temple cleansing, exploring how the immediate removal of internal debris and structural compromises suddenly opens the floodgates for the windows of heaven to pour out mercy. Call-to-Action: The Chronicler reminds us that no matter how far we have drifted or how deep our exile has been, the Lord's covenant is everlasting and His mercy is ready to meet a broken heart. 2 Kings 14-25 - The Scattering of Israel
2026/07/17
When the northern ten tribes vanished into Assyria and the walls of Jerusalem were leveled to dust by Babylon, it wasn't a failure of God’s power—it was the tragic consequence of an unfaithful people. If you feel like the cultural walls are breaking down around you today, this study of the Scattering of Israel reveals exactly how to find your spiritual anchor. Summary: In this sobering deep dive into 2 Kings 14–25, we look at the historical collapse of both Israel and Judah, tracing the long line of kings who ignored the warnings of the prophets until there was no remedy left. By analyzing these final chapters of the history of the divided kingdoms, we discover the tragic steps of apostasy and the beautiful moments of temporary restoration under righteous leaders. The Thistle and the Cedar: We analyze the pride of King Amaziah and how minor victories can trick us into overestimating our own strength, leading to devastating vulnerability. The Destruction of Nehushtan: We study King Hezekiah’s bold iconoclasm, where he smashed the very bronze serpent Moses made because the people had turned a signpost into an idol. Learn to never confuse the means with the end. Psychological Warfare at the Wall: We break down Rab-shakeh’s terrifying speech outside Jerusalem and why the best response to the modern world's mocking is often to "hold your peace" and let God fight your battles. Wiping the Dish: We confront the terrifyingly visual imagery of God wiping Jerusalem like a dish and turning it upside down, seeing how structural neglect leads to spiritual collapse. Finding the Book of the Law: We follow the 8-year-old King Josiah as he repairs the temple breaches, discovers lost scripture, and humbles himself before Huldah the prophetess to launch a total national restoration. The Babylonian Captivity: We witness the final fall of Zedekiah, the breaking of Solomon's pillars, and the carrying away of the temple vessels—realizing that even when we are scattered, the covenant is never completely forgotten. Call-to-Action: Hezekiah smashed a sacred relic because it started getting in the way of true worship. What is the "Nehushtan" or distraction in your life that you need to break to clear your view of the Savior? Let’s build a meaningful dialogue in the comments.
2 Kings 1-13 - Passing the Mantle
2026/07/07
When the whirlwind took Elijah up into heaven, Elisha didn't just inherit a cloak—he inherited a double portion of a heavy prophetic mantle. If your life currently feels like a series of dry brooks, empty oil jars, or overwhelming spiritual battles, Elisha's ministry provides the exact roadmap to help you find the living water. Summary: In this episode, we deep dive into the masterclass of faith found in 2 Kings 1–13. We move from the final, fiery testimonies of Elijah to the intimate, life-giving miracles of Elisha, tracking how God continues to validate and empower His chosen servants across generations. Passing the Mantle: We break down the beautiful, unwavering loyalty of Elisha to Elijah and what it truly means to receive a "double portion" of spiritual power through humility and close proximity. The Widow's Oil and the Shunammite's Son: We analyze the biology of these miracles, where God takes the tiny resources we have available—a single pot of oil or a small chamber—and multiplies them to preserve life. The Healing of Naaman: We dissect the pride of the Syrian captain who wanted a spectacular display but was commanded to wash seven times in a muddy river. Discover why small, simple things are the hardest for the natural man to accept. Eyes to See: When the Syrian army surrounds Elisha and his servant, we see the ultimate contrast between physical sight and spiritual vision. Learn how to look past the visible opposition to see the mountains filled with horses and chariots of fire. The Power of Elisha's Bones: We conclude with the bizarre and beautiful final miracle of Elisha, where even his dead bones have the power to resurrect a man, proving that our covenant connections to the prophets outlive mortality itself. Call-to-Action:Are you standing at the edge of your own "Jordan River," wondering if the power that was with the giants of the past is still available to you today? What is the "muddy river" the Lord is asking you to wash in right now? Let’s talk about it in the comments below.
