Fear isn't the enemy. It's trying to protect you. But what happens when the danger is no longer in front of you and your mind or body is still responding as if it is? In Part 2 of HeatherAsh Amara's conversation with Don Miguel Ruiz Jr., they dive into his newest book, The Poisoned Arrow, and the personal experiences that transformed it from an intellectual exploration of fear into something much more intimate. While writing the book, Miguel was navigating an extraordinarily difficult season with his autistic son, caregiver fatigue, a concussion, and eventually his own experience with PTSD. Those experiences changed the way he understood fear and what it means to heal. Miguel shares a powerful distinction between real fear, irrational fear, and PTSD. Real fear lives in the body and responds to an immediate threat. Irrational fear begins when the mind projects its "what ifs" into the future and responds as though those imagined dangers are already happening. And trauma can leave the nervous system responding to a danger that has already passed. The answer isn't to become fearless. It's to learn how to recognize fear, respect what it's trying to do, and stop using it against ourselves. This conversation explores what becomes possible when we stop judging ourselves for being afraid, give ourselves permission to heal, and slowly rebuild the trust that allows us to move forward. In This Episode The personal experiences that transformedThe Poisoned Arrowwhile Miguel was writing itWhy the function of fear is to protect us, not control usThe difference between real fear and the fears created by our mindsHow our "what ifs" can keep the body responding to dangers that aren't actually happeningMiguel's experience recognizing PTSD in his own nervous systemWhy acknowledging fear can give us more choice in how we respond to itHow shame and judgment can become barriers to healingWhy rebuilding trust in ourselves is essential for moving out of "freeze"What it means to respect fear without letting it run our lives Mentioned in This Episode The Poisoned Arrowby Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.The Five Levels of Attachmentby Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.The Mastery of Selfby Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.The Mastery of Lifeby Don Miguel Ruiz Jr.Seven Secrets to Healthy, Happy Relationshipsby Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. and HeatherAsh Amara About Don Miguel Ruiz Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. is a Toltec Master of Transformation, speaker, and author of The Mastery of Self, The Five Levels of Attachment, co-author of The Seven Secrets to Healthy, Happy Relationships, and The Mastery of Life. What if the biggest obstacle to your healing isn't that you're doing the work wrong... but that you're turning the work itself into another impossible standard? In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, HeatherAsh Amara welcomes longtime friend and bestselling author Don Miguel Ruiz Jr. for an honest exploration of conditional love, personal freedom, and what it really means to practice the Toltec teachings. Together they unpack the surprising difference between The Four Agreements and what Miguel calls the Four Conditions—those moments when we use spiritual teachings to judge ourselves instead of set ourselves free. They also dive into the Five Levels of Attachment, why we cling to identities and beliefs, and how reclaiming our ability to choose is at the heart of genuine healing. Whether you're new to these teachings or have practiced them for years, this conversation offers a compassionate invitation to loosen your grip on perfection and return to yourself. What if almost everything we've been taught about civilization, motherhood, and even spirituality isn't the whole story? In this conversation, HeatherAsh sits down with her longtime friend and bestselling author Perdita Finn to explore the ideas at the heart of her new book, Mothers of Magic. What begins as a conversation about mothers quickly becomes something much bigger. Together they explore what humanity may have lost when we stopped living in relationship with the land, why no child was ever meant to be raised by just one mother, what our ancestors and beloved dead might still have to teach us, and how fierce love may be exactly what's needed in these times. This isn't a conversation filled with easy answers. It's an invitation to question inherited stories, imagine a different future, and remember an older way of belonging. Whether you leave inspired, challenged, or seeing the world through completely new eyes, this is an episode you'll be thinking about long after it ends. In this episode, we explore: Why Perdita believes civilization itself changed the way humans relate to one another, the Earth, and womenThe forgotten wisdom of communal mothering and why no one was ever meant to have only one motherWhat it means to ask your ancestors and beloved dead for guidance, and why Perdita believes they always answerHow prayer becomes a living relationship instead of a religious obligationThe role of fierce love, righteous anger, and imagination in creating a different futureWhy healing isn't just personal. It's remembering our place within a much older story. If you've ever felt like there's another way to live, love, grieve, pray, or belong that our culture has forgotten, this conversation offers a glimpse of what we might remember together. About Perdita Finn Perdita Finn is the author of Take Back the Magic: Conversations with the Unseen World, Mothers of Magic: Summoning the Wisdom of Our Ancestors, and with her husband Clark Strand The Way of the Rose: The Radical Path of the Divine Feminine Hidden in the Rosary. For over 30 years, Carmen Dominguez has been sitting in the space where psychotherapy meets ancient wisdom — first as a young therapist during the HIV/AIDS crisis, where she watched people stripped of every mask discover their essence underneath, and now as Chief Clinical Advisor at Integrative Life Network, weaving neuroscience together with Toltec traditions and somatic practice. In this conversation, Carmen and HeatherAsh dig into what Carmen calls the myth of power: the idea that we're wired from birth to chase safety, connection, and belonging, and that this wiring quietly hijacks our sense of worth. Carmen explains how our gifts — the things we're naturally good at — get recruited into that chase, until we mistake the gift itself for our value. She shares how she unlearned this in her own life, and how she now helps clients (from artists to Harvard students to people in addiction recovery) get into right relationship with their gifts instead of using them to prove they're enough. They also talk about the nervous system: why turning inward can feel like crossing a river with slippery rocks, why awareness itself is medicine, and why something as simple as noticing one second of calm is how real change gets built. Episode Highlights Carmen's childhood under the trees during her family's move from Cuba, and how that became the seed of her life's workHer early years as a therapist during the HIV/AIDS crisis, learning from clients who had nothing left to hide behindNaming the myth of power: how the search for safety, connection, and belonging gets twisted into chasing statusThe Harvard client who linked his worth to his intelligence — and what it looked like to untangle thatWhy "the gift is something we value, not our value" is the turning point of the whole conversationThe river metaphor for turning inward, and why it gets harder before it gets easierShaking the body with intention versus venting anger without it — and why that distinction mattersBuilding nervous system capacity one nanosecond at a time, like adding weight at the gym About Carmen Carmen is a seasoned psychotherapist and consultant with over 30 years of experience, currently serving as the Chief Clinical Advisor at Integrative Life Network. Karla Ruiz grew up watching her grandmother Sarita — a Mexican immigrant, healer, and spiritual force in San Diego — pull people from all over the world into her living room. She didn't fully understand what she was witnessing. Now, 15 years into working with the Ruiz family and stepping into her own voice as a teacher, she's starting to. In this conversation, HeatherAsh and Karla talk about what the Toltec teachings actually look like from the inside, why women keep circling back to the same shame, perfectionism, and people-pleasing no matter how much work they've done, and what it really takes to break the spell. Karla brings something to this conversation that's hard to describe but easy to feel — a steadiness, a gentleness, a refusal to rush toward answers that aren't ready yet. They also get into what it looks like to run a full life without losing yourself in it, how to be present with your kids when the world is feeding you fear, and why awareness is only half the equation if you're not willing to give yourself grace for the other half. Jessie Krebs spent her early life escaping into the wilderness — not for adventure, but for safety. Childhood abuse, a body that didn't feel safe around people, a military career that taught her everything except how to trust herself. What the outdoors gave her was the one thing she couldn't find anywhere else: the feeling of just being a creature on the planet. In this conversation, HeatherAsh and Jessie talk about what really happens when women step into the wild — and why it's so much less about survival skills and so much more about remembering who they are. Jessie is a SERE instructor, wilderness therapy veteran, and Alone Season 9 contestant who has spent decades watching women walk into her programs with their eyes on the ground and walk out standing tall. They get into why women have been trained to see nature as dangerous, how patriarchy and fear of wilderness are the same story, what bow drill fire has to do with your emotional patterns, and why Jessie's three rules for surviving any emergency apply just as well to your life at home. Episode Highlights: How childhood sexual abuse sent Jessie outside — and why the wilderness was the only place that felt safeThe military, SERE training, and the unlikely path from introvert to instructorWhat wilderness therapy actually looks like — and what 11 years of it taught Jessie about masks, patterns, and healingWhy women arrive in Jessie's programs feeling incapable and what happens when someone puts a rope in their handsThe statistics nobody talks about: why the bear isn't what you should be afraid ofJessie's 46 days on Alone Season 9 and the TV show Braver for teensThe three survival rules that work in the backcountry and in your office: relax, signal, insulate Resources & Links: Learn more about Jessie and her courses:https://www.owlsskills.com/Follow Jessie on Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/owls.skills/ Meet Jessie Krebs Jessie Krebs has spent her life finding her way back to the wild. She has appeared on History's Alone Season 9 and National Geographic's Mygrations, taught on MasterClass, and leads everything from single-day courses to multi-week expeditions. Simone Gordon was a young single mother with a nonverbal autistic son and no job when she turned to Facebook and asked a simple question: can anyone help? Four women answered. One called a hospital. One paid off a community college debt. One showed up with a Chromebook. That small, improbable circle of women became the seed of the Black Fairy Godmother Foundation, and Simone has been building on it ever since. In this conversation, HeatherAsh and Simone talk about what it really took to go from desperate to determined, why the structure of giving matters as much as the giving itself, and how Simone learned — after a chronic illness, two volunteer deaths, and a public breakdown — that you cannot sustain a movement by running yourself into the ground. This one is worth sitting with. Simone's voice is steady and real, and there's a lot of truth in it about what women carry, what we're afraid to ask for, and what becomes possible when someone finally says: I see you. I care. In times of uncertainty, many of us feel disoriented — unsure of our roles, our medicine, or even what to call ourselves anymore. In this heartfelt, unscripted conversation, HeatherAsh sits down with longtime friend and teacher, Sarah Marshank, to explore what it means to live, lead, and practice in truly liminal times. Together, they reflect on devotion and boredom, grief and meditation, and the courage it takes to stay present in the unknown. Rather than trying to fix what’s broken, they invite us into a deeper relationship with prayer, presence, and the timeless web of life that connects us all. This episode is a gentle but powerful reminder that real transformation doesn’t come from control or certainty — it comes from listening, slowing down, and remembering who we are beneath our strategies. If you’re feeling exhausted or unsure, this conversation offers a grounded, compassionate place to rest and re-orient. Episode Highlights: Why so many helping professionals are in an identity crisis right nowThe difference between fixing and listeningLiminal times as an invitation, not a problem to solveHow boredom, grief, and stillness restore inner energyDevotion as conversation, not obligationWhy practice is a long-haul path, not a quick fixLetting go of specialness and discovering true uniquenessLearning to walk in the dark together without needing answers Resources & Links: Learn more about Sarah:https://selfistry.com/meet-sarah/Michael Meade's Podcast Episode: Bringing Back the LightJoanna Macy— Referenced for her teachings onThe Great Turning/ the “fourth turning,” which frame collapse and emergence as simultaneous processes within both individuals and collective systems. She's part monk, part mentor, part philosopher-poet, guiding high-achieving seekers to peel back the layers of identity, embrace the non-dual, and meet life with an integrated and embodied presence. Whether leading retreats internationally, sparking inquiry in her clients, tending to her local community, or officiating weddings with reverence and wisdom, Sarah walks her talk. She’s not selling transformation — she’s offering a path to wholeness that doesn’t skip the mess.

HeatherAsh sits down with author and teacher, Michael Stone, to explore a compassionate, practical approach to trauma healing. Michael shares raw pieces of his story, from early childhood and family rupture to profound loss, and how those experiences became medicine for personal and collective awakening. We talk somatic work, ancestral repair, why “relating” matters more than “relationship,” and how community circles become engines of healing. If you’ve ever wondered where to start (or start again), this conversation offers a grounded path: soften, slow down, and let the body lead. Episode Highlights: Trauma is intelligence, not pathology. It’s the nervous system’s adaptive way of keeping us safe, and healing means gently feeling what was once too overwhelming. The body leads the way. Somatic practices, not talk alone, open the door to repair and integration.Healing thrives in relationship. Circles and community dissolve shame, reveal “me too” moments, and accelerate growth. We inherit more than eye color. Is it a clear boundary or is someone trying to control you? When is a boundary in integrity and when is it hidden manipulation? Social media is all ablaze about Sara Brady's recent sharing of text messages between her and ex-boyfriend Jonah Hill, and her labeling his "boundaries" as a form of control. We start here and explore further into the reasons why boundaries are not about trying to change other people's behavior, how to create more intimacy through agreements and vulnerability, and what to do when someone else wants you to be different as a form of proving you "love" and "respect" them.
