5 Things I’ve Changed My Mind About in Leadership
2026/10/07
The longer you lead, the more experience changes how you see leadership. Some things you were sure about early on start to look different after you’ve led people, made mistakes, learned from others, and been around the block a few times. In this episode, Pastor Q shares five things he’s changed his mind about in leadership and what those shifts can teach us about becoming healthier, more effective leaders.
ASK BETTER QUESTIONS, NOT JUST GIVE BETTER ANSWERS
Good leadership is not about always being the person with the answer. There are times when a leader has to make the call, but constantly solving every problem can create dependence instead of developing people. A really good question makes somebody think instead of just follow. Ask, What do you think? What are we missing? What would you do if this were your decision? What’s the real problem here? Giving someone an answer may solve today’s issue. Teaching them how to think develops a leader who can handle tomorrow’s.
STOP MAKING YOURSELF THE BOTTLENECK
Being needed can feel like proof that you’re leading well, but if everything slows down when you step away, you may have simply made yourself the bottleneck. Developing people takes longer than doing something yourself. You have to explain it, let them try, allow them to do it differently than you would, and sometimes let them make mistakes. If you keep doing everything because you can do it faster, everybody else stays slower. Leadership is not only about getting today’s results. It’s about building people for tomorrow and preserving your energy for the things only you can do.
CLARITY BEATS MOTIVATION
People need encouragement and vision, but sometimes they don’t need another motivational speech. They need clarity. What exactly are they responsible for? What does success look like for them or their department? When does it need to be done? Do they understand that they own the decision and the consequences that come with it? Do they know what matters most? Clarity is kindness. People can leave a meeting excited and still have no idea what they’re supposed to do Monday morning. Before you decide someone doesn’t care, ask yourself: Have I made the expectation clear? If it matters, say it. When you’re tired of saying it, keep saying it.
HOLD THE METHOD LOOSELY
Consistency matters, but consistency does not mean refusing to change. Character, values, mission, and how we treat people should stay steady. Methods, systems, processes, structure, and communication may need to change. One of the easiest mistakes leaders make is confusing the mission with the method. The right way is the way that works. Something may have helped you get here and still not be what gets you where you need to go next. Don’t stay attached to a method simply because it used to work. Hold it loosely and keep asking whether it is still effective.
PAY ATTENTION TO WHO IS GETTING BETTER
Early in leadership, it’s easy to notice the person who stands out. They may be talented, charismatic, a strong communicator, or someone who naturally commands a room. Over time, a better measure starts to emerge: What is happening to the people around them? Are people growing? Are new leaders emerging? Are people taking ownership? Can the team function without everything pointing back to one person? The leadership win is not that everybody knows how capable the leader is. It’s that people begin discovering how capable they are. A powerful question every leader should ask is: Are people getting better because I’m leading them?
FINAL TAKEAWAY
Good leaders should be willing to change their minds. Experience should teach us something. Mistakes should teach us something. The people we lead should teach us something. If you’re still leading exactly the way you did ten years ago, it may be worth asking why. Look at how you lead today. Are you developing thinkers or just giving answers? Are you building people or making yourself indispensable? Are expectations clear? Are you holding onto methods that no longer work? And most importantly, are people getting better because you’re leading them? Keep learning, keep adjusting, and keep getting better.
HOW TO SAY WHAT NEEDS TO BE SAID
2026/09/16
Hard conversations are part of leadership, but saying what needs to be said without making things worse takes some work. In this Just Lead Podcast episode, Pastor Q talks about how to prepare for difficult conversations, stay focused on the real issue, communicate with clarity, and listen without losing sight of what needs to change.
The goal isn’t just to get something off your chest. It’s to say it in a way the other person can actually hear. Because avoidance creates confusion, anger creates damage, and healthy leadership brings clarity.
Don’t wait until frustration takes over. Get clear about what needs to be said, consider how the other person will hear it, and have the conversation. You can’t control their reaction, but you can control how you communicate. Be clear. Listen well. Treat them with dignity. Then make sure you both understand what needs to change and what happens next.
Your Attitude After You Get It Wrong
2026/09/02
Every leader gets it wrong sometimes. You may miss a deadline, communicate poorly, make the wrong decision or fail to follow through. The mistake matters, but your attitude afterward reveals whether you’re ready to own it, learn from it and move forward.
DON’T LET ONE MISTAKE BECOME TWO PROBLEMS
The original mistake may be fixable, but defensiveness creates a second problem. Explanations can provide context, but they don’t replace ownership. Before pointing to what others did, ask, What part of this belongs to me? Until you own your part, you won’t know what needs to change.
STAY TEACHABLE WHEN CORRECTION FEELS PERSONAL
Correction can leave you feeling embarrassed, misunderstood or disappointed. Being teachable doesn’t mean agreeing with everything being said. It means listening for what may be true. Listen before you explain, ask questions before you defend and separate correction from rejection.
LET YOUR ATTITUDE CREATE A WAY FORWARD
The right attitude doesn’t erase the mistake or remove every consequence, but it creates a path forward. Ownership makes repair possible. Humility makes growth possible. Teachability makes another opportunity possible. Consistency makes trust possible again.
TURN THE MISTAKE INTO GROWTH
Once the emotion settles, look honestly at how you responded and what needs to change. If your attitude wasn’t right, own that too. An honest apology can repair the relationship, reopen the conversation and show the people around you that you’re willing to grow.
PUT IT INTO PRACTICE
A leader with the right attitude can say:
I got that wrong.
Here is the part that belongs to me.
What do I need to do to make this right?
Here is what I’m going to do differently.
Ask yourself:
What was my first reaction?
What did I feel the need to defend?
What part of the situation belongs to me?
What do I need to do differently now?
If your attitude wasn’t right, return to the conversation and say:
“I’ve thought about how I responded. My attitude wasn’t right. Here is what I see now, and here is what I’m going to do differently.”
FINAL TAKEAWAY
You don’t have to be the leader who never gets it wrong. You do need to be the leader who can own it, learn from it and become better because of it. The mistake tells us what happened. Your attitude tells us what can happen next.
Four Traits of a Team Player
2026/08/19
Great teams are not built by talent alone. They are built by people who are committed to each other, committed to the mission, and willing to bring the right attitude every day.
Pastor Q shares four traits every great team player needs: give your best, stay positive through challenges, keep getting better, and stay connected. The goal is not perfection. It is commitment—giving 100% of what you have, choosing your mindset, learning from every experience, and building strong relationships with the people around you.
Great teams do not happen by accident. They are built through small, consistent choices made over time.
The four questions Pastor Q's team uses to get better:
What went well?
What could have been better?
What did we learn?
What are we going to do differently next time?
Duke University research on optimism: Optimistic people tend to demonstrate stronger financial behaviors and persistence, reinforcing the idea that believing tomorrow can be better can change how we work today.

Recognizing when someone else’s attitude is changing yours
Staying calm without becoming cold or disconnected
Caring about what someone feels without carrying it
Knowing when an attitude needs to be addressed

How to Crush Your New Job in the First 90 Days
2026/07/15
Starting a new job, stepping into a new role, or joining a new organization?
Your first few weeks can shape how people see you and how much influence you are able to build. In this episode, Pastor Q explains why the best way to make an impact is not to walk in trying to prove yourself. It is to learn, listen, build relationships, and consistently help the team move forward.
In this episode:
Why first impressions happen faster than you think
The fastest way to build influence in a new organization
Why relationships should come before recommendations
How to contribute in meetings without overstepping
The importance of learning the culture and its unwritten rules
Why broken systems still require relational leadership
How to create small wins early
Why your job description is the baseline, not the limit
The value of keeping a “yes” on your lips
How to build a track record that leads to greater opportunity
Key takeaway:
Crush what you are responsible for, build strong relationships, and look for opportunities to help beyond your job description. That is how trust grows and influence is earned.

Why One Bad Moment Can Steal Your Whole Day (And How Healthy Leaders Don't Let It)
2026/07/01
In this episode, Pastor Q talks about why small moments can have such a big impact on leaders. A frustrating email, criticism, unexpected problem, or hard conversation may only last a few minutes, but if we keep replaying it, it can steal the rest of the day.
The key reminder is that the size of the event and the size of the reaction are not always the same. Sometimes the problem is not just what happened to us, but what happened in us because of what happened.
Pastor Q explains that our reactions can be clues. When something gets under our skin, healthy leaders ask, Why is this affecting me so much? That question helps reveal pressure, insecurity, grief, or something deeper that may need attention.
Another big idea is that whatever you feed grows, and whatever you focus on expands. Leaders cannot let one frustrating moment erase everything else that is going right.
The practical move is to pause. Time is a tool. A pause gives leaders perspective, helps them respond instead of react, and keeps one bad moment from becoming a bad day.
Final thought: A bad moment does not have to be a bad day, and a bad day does not have to become a bad week.
How Do You Lead People Who Don’t Care Like You Care?
2026/06/17
Pastor Q talks about what happens when leaders care deeply but start carrying more than they should. He explains why leaders often feel the weight before everyone else does, and how that can turn into frustration or resentment if they take it personally.
The episode focuses on healthy ownership: carrying what is yours, helping others own their piece, and not trying to control everything. Pastor Q reminds leaders that not everyone carries responsibility the same way, and leadership is not about making everyone think or feel exactly like you.
The big takeaway: don’t let caring deeply turn into carrying everything by yourself. Lead with care, trust people with responsibility, and stay connected to the team while helping them grow.
Why Does Everything Feel Urgent? (And How Great Leaders Stay Clear)
2026/06/03
In this episode, Pastor Q discusses why so many leaders feel overwhelmed by urgency and constant demands. He explains the difference between what is truly urgent and what simply feels urgent, emphasizing the importance of setting priorities before the day begins. Leaders who lack clarity often live in reaction mode, allowing interruptions to control their focus and energy.
Pastor Q encourages leaders to replace panic with clarity by identifying their top priorities and focusing on the next right thing. While you can't control everything that comes at you, you can control what gets your attention. Effective leadership isn't about doing everything—it's about focusing on what matters most.

We Don't Talk Anymore (Like We Used To)
2026/05/06
Most families haven’t stopped talking, they’ve just stopped talking to each other. The natural moments that used to create connection are gone, replaced by constant noise and distraction, and no one has really stepped in to lead what comes next. In this episode, Pastor Q breaks down why conversation in the home is fading, how digital life is quietly pulling people apart, and why this is less about technology and more about focus. He gets into what silence actually does inside a family, how it creates distance and insecurity, and why words, real face to face conversation, still carry the weight nothing else can. If things feel off at home and you can’t quite name it, this will help you see it clearly and give you a simple way to start fixing it.
Do People Actually Believe You? (The Leadership You Can’t Fake)
2026/04/15
This episode breaks down why leadership rises and falls on one question: do people actually believe you? Pastor Q walks through how character builds credibility, why overpromising kills trust, and how consistency creates confidence in the people you lead. It’s a practical look at what it takes to earn respect, build trust over time, and lead in a way that people don’t just follow, but believe in.
