Advertise on podcast: The X-Files Revisited

Well, we’ve reached the end of Season 8, so it’s time to look back and break down the season as a whole. We’ll be counting down our Top 5 and Bottom 5 episodes from the eighth season of The X-Files, talking through what worked, what didn’t, and how the show handled such a major shift in direction. We’ll also be looking ahead to Season 9, which Graham hasn’t seen before, and discussing what we’re expecting from the next chapter. Scully’s baby is coming, and everyone is closing in. With Reyes trying to get Scully to safety, Mulder and Doggett uncover just how far the conspiracy has evolved — no longer just shadowy men in rooms, but something colder, stronger, and almost impossible to stop. Billy Miles continues his relentless pursuit, while old enemies resurface and loyalties are tested in brutal fashion. The danger is no longer theoretical. It’s at the door. As Scully gives birth in hiding, surrounded by forces she can’t fully understand, the question becomes bigger than survival: what is this child, and why does everyone fear him? Because in “Existence,” the truth doesn’t arrive with answers. It arrives crying in the dark. Scully’s pregnancy reaches its most dangerous point yet as the conspiracy closes in around her unborn child. With Mulder back in the fight, Doggett trying to make sense of who can be trusted, and Reyes pulled deeper into the mystery, the episode turns into a tense protection mission. Everyone seems to want Scully’s baby — but nobody can agree on why. As Billy Miles returns in a terrifying new form, nearly unstoppable and tied to the alien replacement program, the threat becomes brutally clear: this isn’t just about Scully anymore. It’s about what her child might represent. Because in “Essence,” birth becomes the battleground — and the closer Scully gets to delivery, the more dangerous the truth becomes. With Mulder and Scully no longer officially on the X-Files, Doggett is paired with enthusiastic new agent Leyla Harrison — a massive X-Files fan who knows the old cases almost too well. Their first investigation leads them to a bizarre reptilian creature hiding underground, capable of spitting a blinding, cocoon-like substance over its victims. But when Doggett and Harrison become trapped, Mulder and Scully are pulled back in from the sidelines. What starts as a creature feature becomes a fun love letter to the show’s past — packed with callbacks, old-school monster energy, and a reminder that the X-Files were never just Mulder and Scully’s cases. Because even when they step away… the truth has a habit of dragging them back. Mulder breaks orders and drags Doggett into a case on a quarantined oil rig, where a worker has been killed and the official explanation doesn’t add up. Once aboard, they discover something far worse than an industrial accident: the black oil is back, infecting the crew and turning the rig into a floating trap. Mulder knows exactly what they’re dealing with — but Doggett is still trying to process just how deep the X-Files really go. As Scully works the science from the outside, Mulder and Doggett are forced to survive together, barricaded against an infected crew and racing to stop the oil from communicating with something beyond the rig. Because out there, surrounded by ocean, there’s nowhere to run — and whatever is coming… is already onboard. Doggett is forced to confront the painful murder of his son when Monica Reyes connects an apparent possession case to his past. After a man named Jeb Dukes witnesses a fiery car crash, something dark seems to enter him, leading to a brutal killing spree. It’s a supernatural case, but the real focus is Doggett’s grief, Reyes’ intuition, and the idea that evil may move through people who are already broken. Mulder returns after his near-death experience, but quickly discovers that coming back doesn’t mean everything goes back to normal. While he struggles to reclaim his place on the X-Files, a dying man on the White House lawn leaves behind a disk marked “Fight the Future,” pulling Mulder, Scully, Doggett and Skinner into a new layer of the conspiracy. It’s a mythology episode about alien infiltration, government secrets and Mulder realising that while he was gone, the world — and the X-Files — moved on without him. Mulder is discovered buried and barely alive after his alien abduction, leaving Scully, Skinner and Doggett desperate to save him. As Billy Miles mysteriously returns from the dead, the agents begin to uncover a disturbing new stage of the alien conspiracy involving human transformation and the emerging Super Soldier threat. It’s a major mythology episode built around resurrection, body horror and Scully’s refusal to give up on Mulder. A missing abductee is returned to Earth — brutally mutilated and barely alive — reigniting the search for Mulder. As more victims reappear, Scully, Doggett, and Skinner uncover a disturbing pattern tied to a UFO cult led by a man who claims he’s saving abductees… not harming them. But behind it all is a familiar face — a shape-shifting healer trying to undo the damage… before it’s too late. Then comes the moment they’ve been dreading: Mulder is found… but not alive. Because in this case, the truth doesn’t bring hope —it brings something far worse. A man claims his wife was murdered after giving birth to an alien child — and Scully can’t ignore the parallels to her own past. As she investigates a shadowy fertility clinic, she uncovers disturbing evidence of genetic experiments, staged pregnancies, and infants that are far from human. Drawn deeper into the conspiracy, Scully becomes a target — manipulated, deceived, and forced to question the truth behind her own pregnancy. With Doggett closing in on the cover-up, the lines between science, belief, and control begin to blur. Because in this case, the real mystery isn’t just what’s being created…it’s who’s pulling the strings. A subway cop is found with his flesh stripped to the bone after a train mysteriously loses power underground. Doggett heads into the tunnels while Scully coordinates from above, uncovering a deadly threat: bioluminescent sea organisms that cling to the body and trigger lethal electrical reactions through sweat. As officials try to cover it up and keep the subway running, Doggett is trapped below with the infection spreading — and a train full of passengers heading straight into danger. With time running out, he makes a desperate call to stop it at the source. Because down here… the real danger isn’t what you can see —it’s what’s already on you. Doggett follows a trail Mulder left behind — a hidden case involving a missing woman, a remote town, and a mysterious creature tied to Native American legend. As he retraces Mulder’s steps, the truth emerges: a being known as a soul eater can heal the sick by absorbing their illness… at a terrible cost to itself. Mulder found it — and instead of exposing it, tried to end its suffering. When Doggett uncovers the secret, he’s pulled into the same moral dilemma… and pays the price. Because in this case, the real question isn’t what the monster is — it’s whether it ever was one. A businessman returns from India… already dead — his body used as a vessel by something unseen. As more victims are found, Scully uncovers a chilling possibility: a legless mystic capable of hiding inside human bodies and altering how people perceive reality. Driven by revenge for a past tragedy, the killer moves unseen — striking from within and leaving no trace behind. As the case spirals, Scully is forced to trust instinct over evidence, making a split-second decision that blurs the line between what’s real… and what’s only seen. Because in this case, the danger isn’t what’s in front of you —it’s what your mind is telling you isn’t there. After a violent car crash, a man thought dead returns — but something is very wrong. His body is transforming into living metal, making him nearly indestructible. As Doggett and Scully investigate a series of brutal revenge killings, they uncover a link to a corporate experiment involving “smart metal” — and a deadly mistake that turned a working man into something else entirely. Driven by pain and betrayal, Ray Pearce hunts down those responsible… but as his body changes, so does his humanity. Because in the end, he’s not just fighting for revenge — he’s fighting to hold onto the last part of himself that’s still human. A terrified man runs to a police station for safety — only to be killed inside a locked room by a bullet fired from impossible range. As Doggett and Scully investigate a series of similar murders, they uncover a bizarre truth: the killer can see through walls and strike targets without ever being in the same room. The case leads them to a shady extermination business, where a dangerous power is being exploited — turning one man into the perfect assassin. But behind the killings lies something more human: manipulation, control, and a desperate attempt to escape it. Because in this case, the deadliest weapon… is what you can’t see.
