Description

We discuss the biggest questions: "what's real?", "who matters?" and "how to make a better world?" with scientists, celebrities, activists, writers and philosophers. The Sentientism worldview is "evidence, reason and compassion for all sentient beings." It's a simple, yet radical, philosophy that's grounded in reality (naturalistic epistemology) and has compassion for all sentient beings (mostly human and non-human animals). Naturalism & sentiocentrism combined. Find out more at https://sentientism.info/ or join a group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/sentientism. Also on YouTube!

Magnus Vinding | Compassionate Purpose, Reasoned Politics, Suffering-Focused Ethics | Sentientism 252
2026/10/07
Magnus Vinding co-founded the Center for Reducing Suffering where he is also a researcher. He is the author of books including Compassionate Purpose, Reasoned Politics and Suffering-Focused Ethics. In this Sentientism conversation, he explores how we can live purposeful lives that help make the world better, but that are also good for us as individuals. We're sentient beings too, of course, so we need to be compassionate to ourselves. We cover his journey from a Protestant upbringing in Denmark to adopting naturalism, why he defends a moral realist view centred on experience, and why good intentions and compassion alone aren't enough without evidence and reason. We discuss the case for suffering-focused ethics and answer common objections about extinction, death and freedom. We also look at how veganism and concern for wild animals follow from taking sentience seriously, what a reasoned politics might look like (including sentientist democracy or sentiocracy), and how to sustain compassion without burning out. Magnus's newest book, Compassionate Purpose, argues that self-compassion is central to that.Topics include:- Epistemology: naturalism, evidence and reason, and Hempel's dilemma- Metaethics: moral realism and the "is-ought" gap- Suffering-focused ethics, and the role of freedom, autonomy and instrumental values- Veganism, antispeciesism and wild animal suffering- Reasoned Politics: liberal democracy and sentientist democracy- Compassionate Purpose: self-compassion, burnout and pragmatismChapters:00:00 Clips00:37 Welcome02:37 Magnus' Intro06:30 What's Real?29:55 What Matters?49:45 Who Matters?1:08:29 A Better World: Reasoned Politics01:19:29 A Better World: Compassionate Purpose01:32:23 Follow Magnushttps://magnusvinding.com/https://centerforreducingsuffering.org/Magnus's books are free to read:Reasoned Politics: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/9798233943911Compassionate Purpose: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/9798235156883 Suffering-Focused Ethics: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/9781667091495The Sentientism worldview is "evidence, reason, & compassion for all sentient beings." How to Change Humanity | Björn Ólafsson | Sentientism 250
2026/09/03
What actually convinces a politician, a farmer, or a sceptical friend to change how they think about nonhuman animals? Researcher and advocate Björn Ólafsson joins The Sentientism Podcast to talk about leaving Catholicism behind, why social norms get mistaken for morals, and why sentience; not ecosystems, species or familiarity, should be the foundation of who counts morally.Björn works in research and research communication for the animal protection movement, bridging the gap between academic researchers and on-the-ground advocates. He writes the Substack "More Than Meats The Eye," (https://morethanmeatstheeye.substack.com/) has worked with Sentient Media, the Better Food Foundation, and Spain's Animal Welfare Observatory, and has spoken at VARC and the AVA Summit in Nairobi. We cover:- Growing up religious, asking unanswered questions, and quietly leaving faith behind- Why most people confuse social norms with morality- Going vegetarian at 10 after reading a magazine in a dentist's waiting room- Expanding moral concern from mammals to chickens, insects, and shrimp- Why ecocentrism can be "another form of human-centricity" if it excludes farmed and wild animals- The economics of factory farming vs. plant-based transition- Why no single tactic — documentaries, policy, consumer pressure — works alone- Working with farmers and conservative governments without compromising the goal- Why factory farming is expanding fastest in Africa and Southeast Asia, and what's being done about it.00:00 Clips00:52 Welcome02:46 Björn's Intro05:15 What's Real? Pretty Lies that hide the truth and drive discrimination | Natalie Khazaal | Sentientism 248
2026/07/18
Dr. Natalie Khazaal is Associate Professor in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech, where she directs the Arabic and Middle East & North Africa programs. Her work spans teaching Arabic, exploring the lives of atheists and apostates in Arab and Muslim communities, nonhuman animal ethics, and the media's role in normalizing speciesism and racism. Natalie is the co-creator of the MARS test (Media Analysis of Racism and Speciesism), an evaluative framework—similar to the Bechdel and DuVernay tests—that measures racism and speciesism in media. She joins Sentientism episode 248 to talk about growing up in a secular household in Bulgaria, the "pretty lies" media tell to avoid uncomfortable truths (the subject of her book on Lebanese television during the civil war), and how her research on the MARS Test reveals overlapping patterns of racism and speciesism in mainstream media, including Oscar-winning animations. We explore her naturalistic approach to reality and happiness, her path to veganism as a purely ethical decision, and her argument that racism and speciesism are structurally linked through slaughterhouse labour, environmental racism, dehumanising rhetoric about migrants, and the historical use of animals as instruments of racial violence. We close by asking how storytelling and material change together might shift humanity toward a less oppressive, more sentience-inclusive, more reality-based worldview. Here's Natalie's work applying the MARS (Media Analysis of Racism and Speciesism) test to the animated and short film Oscars: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/communication/articles/10.3389/fcomm.2025.1483941/full and here's Fox News attacking that work: https://www.foxnews.com/media/professors-claim-disneys-lion-king-other-animated-films-promote-white-privilege-new-study.Follow and read Natalie:- https://modlangs.gatech.edu/people/person/natalie-khazaal- https://modlangs.gatech.edu/featured-people/natalie-khazaal- "Nonbelievers, Apostates and Atheists in the Muslim World" (ed) https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/9781032484785- "Pretty Liar: Television, Language and Gender in Wartime Lebanon" https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/978081565451300:00 Clips01:00 Welcome03:03 Natalie's Intro06:08 What's Real?38:18 What Matters?45:25 Who Matters?01:03:12 A Better World?01:14:06 Follow Natalie and Her WorkFull show notes will be at: https://sentientism.info/In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what’s real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?" Eva Meijer is a philosopher, novelist, poet, and visual artist whose work explores nonhuman animals, politics, language, and multispecies relationships. In this conversation, Sentientism episode 246, we cover:- What living with 25 ex-laboratory mice taught her about life, death, and what matters- Why our disconnection from animals is both alienating and destructive- How fiction and poetry might reveal truths that philosophy and science can't- Their vision for multispecies assemblies. Bringing nonhuman animals, plants, future generations and more into political deliberation- Whether plants matter morally and what that means for agriculture and veganism- Art made with and for nonhuman audiences. Including a fountain designed for birds and insects, not for humansEva's work challenges us to move beyond abolishing exploitation toward genuinely sharing the world, politically, ethically, and creatively, with the other beings we share it with.Follow Eva:- https://www.evameijer.nl/- https://sentientism.info/sentientist-pledge/eva-meijer00:00 Clips00:48 Welcome03:28 Eva's Intro05:12 What's Real?33:17 What Matters?47:10 Who Matters?01:12:11 A Better World?Full show notes are at: https://sentientism.info/ In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what’s real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?" Have We Fallen for the Greatest Deception? - Philosopher John Sanbonmatsu's hard-hitting truth - Sentientism 244
2026/03/04
In Sentientism episode 244, philosopher John Sanbonmatsu (https://sentientism.info/sentientist-...) discusses his powerful new book The Omnivore's Deception (https://uk.bookshop.org/a/15422/97814.... It's a radical, hard-hitting critique of the stories we tell ourselves and each other to justify violence and oppression. We explore why the exploitation of nonhuman animals is not a trivial issue, but the defining ethical crisis of our time. John argues there is no such thing as “ethical” animal agriculture, challenging narratives from figures like Michael Pollan, Temple Grandin and Barbara Kingsolver.Topics include: The hidden violence of factory farming and so-called “humane” farming“Bad faith” and why people avoid uncomfortable truths (via Jean-Paul Sartre)Meat, masculinity, populism, misogyny, fascism and figures like Joe Rogan, Jordan Peterson, Andrew Tate and Robert Kennedy JrThe femivore women who look for meaning in doing violence against animalsThe myth of “ethical” or “sustainable” animal farmingCapitalism, disinformation, and self-deceptionWhy welfarist or incremental reforms and utilitarianism risk obscuring or distracting us from the real problem. This is a bold, uncompromising conversation about truth, ethics, and our relationship with other sentient beings. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what’s real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?" Sentientism answers those questions with "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." We kill about 80 billion land animals every year in agriculture and up to almost 3 trillion marine animals in the oceans.”“Industries intentionally don't show us the violence and suffering and filth that goes into the production. You're only going to see the commodity in its processed form.”“My message is simply that we have to show a kind of courage and resilience in the face of what's happening. And we just can't give up. Spirituality, Veganism & Sentientism: Mari Andrew on Animals, Meaning, and Moral Hierarchy - Sentientism 243
2026/02/09
What happens when spirituality, animal ethics, veganism, and sentientism collide? In this wide-ranging conversation, writer and artist Mari Andrew explores faith, doubt, morality, and our relationship with non-human animals, from Christianity and myth to veganism, hierarchy, and what it really means to live compassionately in a complex world. In episode 243 of Sentientism, New York Times Bestselling author Mari Andrew reflects on her journey from childhood spirituality and existential OCD to animal advocacy, creativity, and her latest book How to Be a Living Thing. Together, we explore whether morality needs God, whether myth and science can coexist, why hierarchy is the hardest thing humans give up when they stop exploiting animals, and how joy, creativity, and embodiment can guide ethical change. We discuss veganism without dogma, the moral status of animals beyond “cute” species, disability ethics, liberation theology, and how small shifts in perspective can ripple into a better world. This is a conversation about curiosity, humility, and expanding compassion — for humans and non-human sentients alike.Mari Andrew is a writer, artist, speaker, teacher, and needle-felting enthusiast. Her first book, Am I There Yet? is a New York Times Bestselling collection of observations from her 20s. Her second book, My Inner Sky, focuses on her recovery from illness back to a flourishing life. Her third book, How to be a Living Thing, focuses on human nature, inspired by living through the COVID pandemic. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what’s real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?" Sentientism answers those questions with "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." We've always learned how to eat differently. Nothing's being taken away from you. But I realized in actually writing this book that hierarchy is taken away. Censored Landscapes - Isabella La Rocca Gonzalez - Sentientism 240
2025/11/23
Isabella La Rocca Gonzalez is an artist, writer, photographer, teacher and activist. She describes her work as "part of a long tradition in art and photography: to bring to light and find beauty in the hidden, unconscious, or disregarded. As the daughter of emigrants from Mexico and Italy respectively, I strive to reconcile values from my Indigenous roots with my European heritage." Her artistic work is richly entangled with her ecofeminist, total liberation activism. Her book of photographs and creative nonfiction, "Censored Landscapes", which exposes sites of animal agriculture, was published in December 2024 by Lantern Publishing. The book has been widely endorsed, including by previous Sentientism guests Jo-Anne McArthur, Marc Bekoff, Robert Grillo, Jonathan Balcombe and Lisa Kemmerer. In Sentientist Conversations we talk about the most important questions: “what’s real?”, “who matters?” and "how can we make a better world?" Sentientism answers those questions with "evidence, reason & compassion for all sentient beings." The video of our conversation is here on YouTube. 00:00 Clips“It took me 11 years to create the book… I love the tradition of American landscape photography. So I decided to just find as many different kinds of farms where animals are bred, exploited, and slaughtered and photograph the context… When you photograph an animal or a person, it's almost an act of empathy because you know when you're really in the flow of it, you are the thing you're photographing... My utopian world would be vegan. There's just no way that a world that I imagined would exploit or slaughter animals in any way, shape, or form… The path to that was very imaginable.”00:51 WelcomeEndorsements of "Censored Landscapes" by previous Sentientism guests Jo-Anne McArthur, Marc Bekoff, Mark Grillo, Jonathan Balcombe and Lisa Kemmerer.02:55 Isabella's IntroVeganism, art, photography, writing.Censored Landscapes: “It took me 11 years to create the book.”“It started because I photographed an abandoned egg farm where 50,000 hens had been abandoned in a battery cage egg farm.”“I don't have the bravery to infiltrate these facilities and go in and expose the cruel practices of these facilities, but I love landscape photography.”“I decided to just find as many different kinds of these kinds of farms where animals are bred, exploited, and slaughtered, and photographed the context.”Photographing in sanctuaries: “So that these animals are represented as individuals”07:03 What's Real?23:28 What Matters?30:29 Who Matters?49:37 A Better World?01:16:00 Follow Isabella:- Glissi - Censored Landscapes - @eyelarocca - Isabella on BlueSky And more... full show notes at Sentientism.info.
