Description

Basics of Sikhi Podcast is a relaxed talk show about Sikhism (Sikhi) and topics related. Most discussions and learning about Sikhi take place in a formal setting like a Gurdwara (Sikh temple), by way of Punjabi speaking Parchariks (educators) speaking to the congregation. In recent years, many educators have taken to online platforms such as YouTube & Facebook to inspire, educate and spread the message of Sikhi to the world, in English. Our successful and popular YouTube channel, Basics of Sikhi (be sure to subscribe!) has been hugely appreciated as a new, interactive and modern way of learning about Sikhi, especially by the younger generation, some of which who cannot speak or understand Punjabi so much. In a similar way, this Podcast, hosted by Sukhdeep Singh (Sikh educator at Basics of Sikhi) and Karanveer Singh (Sikh volunteer), is continuing that innovation by bringing learning about Sikhi to an informal and relaxed platform in the form of this talk show podcast. Sukhdeep & Karanveer will invite different guests to the Podcast to discuss various topics directly and indirectly related to Sikhi e.g. Sikh history, traditions, fitness, nutrition, mental health, music and the list goes on!... We hope you enjoy this Podcast and would greatly appreciate your feedback. From Lamborghinis to True Wealth in Sikhi | Gurbani Kaur
2026/10/06
Gurbani Kaur grew up with Lamborghinis and designer bags. Yet the moment she felt like “the wealthiest person in the world” came from being surrounded by Gurbani and the love of Sangat. In this episode of the Finding Sikhi Podcast, Gurbani Kaur Bhenji shares her journey from a life centred on appearance and material wealth to finding strength, identity and belonging through the Guru. She opens up about arriving at the Gurdwara during a dark time at university, feeling she wasn’t good enough to wear a Dastaar or take Amrit, and the Gursikhs who supported her family when they lost their home. The conversation also explores marriage, motherhood, depression and therapy, and why we should never feel ashamed to ask for help. In this episode, we discuss: • Growing up with wealth but struggling to find peace • How Kirtan, Seva and Sangat drew her towards Sikhi • Moving from makeup and fashion to keeping Kes and wearing a Dastaar • Feeling unworthy of Amrit and finding acceptance • Losing the family home and receiving support from Sangat • Choosing a marriage built on love for the Guru • Mental health, therapy and suffering in silence • Navigating motherhood and family challenges Discovering the true wealth of Gurbani and Sangat Whether you’re exploring Sikhi, struggling with belonging or facing challenges while already on this path, Gurbani Kaur’s story offers an honest reflection on finding support and building a personal relationship with the Guru. Guru Nanak Didn’t Come to Create “Just Another Religion” | Satpal Singh
2026/09/18
Eight years to translate Japji Sahib into English poetry. Bhai Satpal Singh explains why it took that long. Bhai Satpal Singh, founder of Nanak Naam, joins Basics of Sikhi TV for a two and a half hour conversation about Gurbani, meditation and the project he could not put down: a poetic Japji Sahib English translation, set to music and structured as the question and answer that Guru Nanak Dev Ji's Bani has always been. He explains why the existing English translations of Japji Sahib never carried the depth he found in the classical commentary, why earlier versions of his own were scrapped, and why a poet friend told him rhyming Bani in english simply could not be done. He is honest that every translation is a compromise, and about answering the people who asked whether any of it was approved. The conversation goes well past the project. Bhai Satpal Singh describes sitting in meditation and letting go of one layer at a time: the day's noise, buried thoughts, attachment to his wife and children, then the fear underneath that, until there was nothing left to release. And something was still there. That "I am" that will not leave is haumai, the one obstacle Gurbani names again and again. As he puts it, you cannot pull the weeds out of a garden you have never once walked into. He also makes an interesting argument: that Guru Nanak Dev Ji was not starting the fifth largest religion, but offering a wisdom that sits above all of them. Keep your religion, he says, and let Gurmat elevate it. Also in this episode: religious guilt and burnout in parchaar, why he treats this work as a nine to five, why his children stay off the Nanak Naam channel, the half hour of Hukamnama the family does before the school bus, why he refuses to make content on parenting, and the six months between Bhai Jagraj Singh Ji's diagnosis and his passing. Sikhi Was Never Meant To Be A Religion.
2026/08/13
Was Sikhi ever meant to be only a private religion? In this BoS TV podcast, Bhai Ranveer Singh author of Patshahi Mehima: Revisiting Sikh Sovereignty and founder of Khalis House explains why Patshahi, political freedom and institution-building run throughout Sikh history, from Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Kartarpur Sahib to June 1984 and the modern conversation surrounding Khalistan. Ranveer Singh shares how questions about Sant Jarnail Singh Ji, the Sikh struggle and June 1984 led him backwards through 1978, 1947 and 1849 and ultimately to the time of the Gurus. He argues that to understand Sikh sovereignty today, we must first recover what the Guru actually built. Drawing upon Gurbani, Bhai Gurdas Ji’s Vaaran, Puratan Granths and Sikh history, the conversation explores how Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s mission went beyond delivering spiritual teachings. Through the Udasis, Sangat, Pangat, Langar, Gurmukhi, the Manji system and Kartarpur Sahib, the Guru created the foundations of a distinct and sovereign Panth. The discussion also examines how colonial rule and Western categories reframed Sikhi as “Sikhism” a private religion separated from political life. Can spirituality and political freedom really be separated in Sikhi? Is Khalistan disconnected from Sikh history or is it a modern expression of a much older pursuit of Sikh sovereignty? 📚 Explore Khalis House: https://khalishouse.com/ 🌐 Connect with Bhai Ranveer Singh Here: ranveersingh.co.uk 📖 Patshahi Mehima: Revisiting Sikh Sovereignty: https://khalishouse.com/products/pats...
He Read the Quran, Bible & Bhagwat Gita - Then Found Sikhi
2026/07/28
Why would a British atheist become a Sikh at just 17? Bishan Singh also known as Sam Ashton, shares how reading the Quran, Bible, Bhagavad Gita and Guru Granth Sahib Ji ultimately led him to Sikhi. In this episode of the Finding Sikhi Podcast, Bishan Singh shares his complete journey from questioning religion to discovering Bhai Jagraj Singh, wearing a Dastar to school, taking Amrit and learning Gurmukhi from scratch. Raised in a white British family in Nottingham, Bishan grew up with little connection to organised religion. As a teenager, his search for truth led him through atheism, philosophy, Islam, Christianity, Hindu thought and Buddhism. Everything changed when he discovered Sikhi. After watching Bhai Jagraj Singh at Speakers’ Corner, Bishan began exploring the original Basics of Sikhi videos and reading an English translation of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Within months, he stopped drinking, became vegetarian, began keeping his Kes and wore a Dastar to school. At just 17, he took Amrit. In this honest and thought-provoking conversation, Bishan discusses: • Growing up atheist in a white British family • Reading the Quran, Bible and Bhagavad Gita • What made Sikhi different from the other paths he studied • Discovering Bhai Jagraj Singh and Basics of Sikhi • Reading Guru Granth Sahib Ji in English • Visiting a Gurdwara for the first time • Wearing a Dastar to school and facing ridicule • Why his headteacher initially thought he was mocking Sikhi • Taking Amrit at only 17 years old • Returning to school wearing a Kirpan • Helping establish a Kirpan policy at his school • Learning Gurmukhi and Gurbani Santhya from scratch • Memorising Japji Sahib without knowing Punjabi • The difference between looking Sikh and changing internally • Why he believes nobody can simply be “born Sikh” • Whether Sikhi is a mixture of Hinduism and Islam • Advice for people from Punjabi and non-Punjabi backgrounds • Why knowledge must be learned—and then passed forward This is a story about searching sincerely, following the truth wherever it leads and developing a personal relationship with the Guru. Whether you are exploring Sikhism, questioning your own faith or were raised Sikh without fully understanding Sikhi, Bishan Singh’s journey shows that the Guru’s path is open to everyone. Please share this podcast with someone searching for purpose, faith or a deeper understanding of Sikhi. ▶ Subscribe to Basics of Sikhi TV for more honest conversations, Sikh podcasts and inspiring journeys towards the Guru.

This Martyr Woke the Entire Sikh Nation! | Baba Tara Singh Ji Vaan
2026/03/17
300 years ago, one man’s refusal to bow down sparked a revolution that saved the Sikh identity. In this hard-hitting episode of BOSTV, we dive deep into the life and Shaheedi (martyrdom) of Baba Tara Singh Ji Vaan. By 1726, after the Shaheedi of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur (1716), many Sikhs had begun to settle into "normal" life, attempting to integrate into a society that oppressed them... until Baba Tara Singh Ji stood up. We explore the incredible accounts from Bhai Rattan Singh Bhangoo’s Prachin Panth Prakash, detailing how a simple dispute over grazing land turned into a legendary stand against the Mughal Empire. This wasn't just a battle; it was the birth of the Sikh Renaissance and the catalyst for the first-ever Sarbat Khalsa. Join us as we uncover the story of the 22 Singhs who chose death over dishonor and reminded the Panth that a Sikh's first loyalty is to the Guru, not to a tyrant's peace. —————————————————— 📱 Social Media: YOUTUBE: BoSTV - https://bit.ly/3rYk5IW INSTAGRAM: @basicsofsikhi.tv - www.instagram.com/basicsofsikhi.tv 🙏 Please SUPPORT our work: www.basicsofsikhi.com/donate 👋🏽 Contact us: www.basicsofsikhi.com/contact-us
