Prayer Still Changes Things
2026/09/20
When life gets heavy, what's the first thing you reach for? In James 5:13-20, prayer shows up as a daily habit for hard seasons and good ones, as something we invite our leaders into when we're hurting, and as something every believer can do, from the youngest to the newest to the most seasoned. In this message: * Why prayer belongs in the good seasons as much as the hard ones * What it looks like to ask church leaders to pray with you * What honest confession sounds like, and who needs to hear it * How to go after a friend who is drifting without gossiping about them Pick one person to pray for this week. If someone you know has been drifting, reach out to them directly. The God who answered Elijah still listens when we pray.
Waiting Without Giving Up
2026/09/13
What do you do when you've prayed, you've acted, and you still can't see the answer? James writes to people who were genuinely wronged, exploited by the powerful and left waiting for God to make it right. If you're carrying pressure that isn't yours to fix, ask where you've been putting it down and whether your yes is actually yes. A certain future gives us strength to stay faithful in an uncertain present.
Money Talks — What God Hears
2026/09/06
God has already heard the injustice and already judged it, so his people neither join it nor avenge it, but wait for him to make it right.
Stay in Your Lane
2026/08/30
James takes us to two places we don't usually think of as dangerous: the words we say about other people, and the plans we make for our own future. In both, he catches something subtle. Not open rebellion against God, but a quiet swap where we start acting like we hold the authority, the knowledge, or the timeline that actually belongs to him. In this message: • Two ways James says we drift into God's lane, in our speech and in our plans • Why slander is really a judgment of the law, not just a person • The difference between arrogance dressed as confidence and arrogance dressed as anxiety • What "if the Lord wills" actually means as a daily posture, not a phrase • Three practical ways to redirect your voice before it causes a wreck
Hands Up
2026/08/23
What if the fight you're having with someone else is actually a fight happening inside you first? James won't let us blame the conflict around us without asking what's driving it. He traces our fights and quarrels back to passions at war within us, desires that were never wrong to have but became wrong to worship. When something we want gets promoted from a gift to a master, we'll sin to get it, sin when we don't get it, and sin to keep from losing it. In this message: • Why every conflict with people points to a deeper passion problem • What it means when a desire moves from something we have to something that has us • Why James calls misplaced passion "adultery" against God •  How greater grace, not more effort, makes real surrender possible • What surrender actually looks like in ordinary, everyday moments
When Wisdom Feels Hard
2026/08/16
Can you actually tell if someone is wise, or are you just impressed by how confident they sound? James asks a simple but hard question in chapter 3: who among you is wise? But he refuses to let the answer come from what someone claims. He says wisdom shows itself in a life, not in a speech.
The Fire in Your Mouth
2026/08/09
This week, don't just ask why you said what you said. Ask what it revealed about what's filling your heart, and bring that honestly to Jesus. Your words are not the source. They're the overflow, and Jesus wants to become what fills you. In this message: - Why James says teachers face a stricter judgment (v.1-2) - The difference between taming your tongue and bridling it - What the horse, ship, and forest fire pictures reveal about the tongue's power - Why blessing and cursing from the same mouth "should not be this way" - How to move from "watch your mouth" to "check your source" Scripture: James 3:1-12 Series: Keep It 100 (Q3, Week 6) Sermon notes available at spbaptist.org/sermons
No Favorites. No Excuses
2026/08/02
God doesn't rank people by what they can offer Him. He sees hearts, not status, and He's still calling His church to do the same. In this message: - Why James calls favoritism sin, not just a social slip-up - The courtroom language behind "do not show partiality" and what it means for how we treat people - What it looks like when religious words become a substitute for real obedience - Why Abraham and Rahab are paired together on purpose - The question this message leaves you sitting with: does your life provide evidence of what you believe? Scripture: James 2:1-26 Series: Keep It 100 (Q3, Week 5) Sermon notes available at spbaptist.org/sermons
Do More Than Listen

“Be doers of the word and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22, CSB)
Fighting What's Pulling You
2026/07/12
James draws a sharp line between trials and temptation. God uses pressure to grow us. Temptation tries to pull us away from Him, and confusing the two leaves us misreading both our struggles and our God. In this message: - Why James separates trials (which mature you) from temptation (which pulls you away) - How a distorted view of God produces a distorted way of living - Why changing your environment isn't enough if your heart hasn't changed - What it means to be called a "firstfruit" of God's creation -Why identity has to come before you can withstand temptation The challenge is simple but not easy: stop blaming your circumstances and take honest ownership of what's actually pulling your heart, then bring it to your Father instead of carrying it alone.
Tired but Still Trusting
2026/07/05
James doesn't let us stay comfortable. He asks whether we're the same person in every room, or whether we're carrying two competing loyalties at once (praying with our mouths while building a backup plan with our hearts). In this message: - Why James calls divided loyalty "double-mindedness" and how it drains us - How to "consider it joy" without denying real pain - The difference between asking God for answers and asking God for wisdom - Why neither poverty nor wealth was ever meant to be our foundation - What it means to rest in God's promise before the trial ends, not just after
The Bottom Line: What Life Is Really About
2026/06/28
What do you do when you finally get the thing you've been chasing, and your soul still says there has to be more? In this message: - Why the things we build to give life meaning always leave us asking "what else is there" - What the Teacher means by "fear God" and why it's not what most of us think - How God's seeing differs from surveillance (and why that distinction changes everything) - Why the cross is the place where the Judge absorbed the verdict that belonged to us - What it looks like to finally stop performing and actually live
A Father's Legacy
2026/06/21
Proverbs 20:7 makes a quiet but disruptive claim: the most durable thing any of us leaves behind is not what we accomplished. It's how we walked. Not what we intended. Not what we said we valued. The actual direction of our daily life. This message confronts something most of us avoid. We spend enormous energy managing outcomes we can't control while giving very little attention to the one thing we can — the direction of our walk. And direction, not intention, determines destination.
