2026/08/25
IUMI Masterclasses offer three-and-a-half days of intensive learning, taking a deep dive into the key concepts of either cargo or hull insurance. Led by senior industry professionals, the Masterclasses are interactive, discussion-based workshops covering a broad and practical curriculum. Earlier this year, we took our Cargo Masterclass outside London for the first time, choosing Singapore as our venue. In this podcast, we hear from two of the participants: Mark Govender, Head of Marine, Sub-Saharan Africa at AIG in South Africa, and Joanne Soh, Senior Marine Underwriter, Asia Pacific at Sompo in Singapore. Mark and Joanne share their experiences of the Masterclass, explaining how it strengthened their technical knowledge, broadened their professional networks and gave them the opportunity to learn from experienced colleagues from across the marine insurance community. Our next two Masterclasses – Hull and Cargo – will take place in London in October. Please visit https://iumi.com/category/learning/masterclass/ for full details.

The increasing sophistication of cargo crime
2026/04/02
Cargo crime has existed in most regions of the world for centuries. Until relatively recently, it has usually taken the form of theft, sometimes with aggression. Today, we are seeing a worrying growth of fraud and deception, encouraged by technology and AI. “Fake Carriers” are emerging to steal cargo non-violently but with great success.   This podcast explores the topic with the expert input of Thorsten Neumann, President & CEO of the Transported Asset Protection Association (TAPA EMEA) and Björn Hartong, Global Head of Risk Engineering Marine, Security & Supply Chain at Zurich Insurance. Björn is also a member of the IUMI Loss Prevention Committee.
Hegemony, violence and marine insurance
2026/02/17
Hegemony and violence are two strong words loaded with meaning. It’s not often they are connected with the world of marine insurance. Aside from writing, Tom is well known as a Senior Expert in the Marine Underwriting Department at Tokio Marine & Nichido  Fire Insurance Co Ltd and he is also an IUMI Executive Committee Member. Tom is the guest in our latest podcast where he explains more about the fascinating growth and development of marine insurance. He brings to life some of the lesser known influences on our industry.

2025/12/02
Two years ago we published guidance for the safe carriage of electric vehicles by sea. Much has changed since then and, as a result, we’ve updated our advice and issued a revised paper – available here: https://iumi.com/policy/position-papers/best-practice-paper-update-risk-mitigation-for-the-safe-ocean-and-short-sea-carriage-of-electric-vehicles/ In this podcast we are talking to two of the authors of the revised paper: Sebastian Kempka who is a senior consultant at KA Köln Assekuranz  and a member of IUMI’s Loss Prevention Committee; and Ricky Braz, a master mariner and marine underwriter at Munich Re. The growing issue of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing
2025/06/05
Today – 5 June – is international IUU Fishing Day which raises awareness of illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing.   This is a significant problem affecting fisheries, economies and livelihoods. It not only undermines conservation efforts but also threatens marine biodiversity and encourages poverty, food insecurity and human rights abuses.   In this podcast we discuss this concerning and growing issue in the context of marine insurance. To do that, we are joined by Anneke Kooiman who is Associate Director, Technique Marine at DUPI in the Netherlands. Anneke has a long association with IUMI including a number of  years chairing the Inland Hull, Fishing Vessels and Yachts Committee where she was very vocal on the issue of IUU fishing.    We are also joined by Lindsay Getschel who is an Outreach and Engagement Senior Associate from the Ocean Risk and Resilience Action Alliance in Washington DC.

Joining the discussion are Jackie Lan who is a Senior Marine Hull and Liability Underwriter at QBE in Singapore and also Sean Whitney who is Assistant Vice-President, Ocean Marine at SOMPO in New York. Jackie is a member of the Ocean Hull Committee and Sean sits on the Inland Hull, Fishing Vessel and Yachts Committee. Listen to what they have to say.
What might the trend for tariffs mean for marine insurance?
2025/04/28
Tariffs – actual or threatened – are changing the way we live, work and do business. Nations are imposing restrictions on other nations only to suffer themselves as retaliatory tariffs are demanded. Global markets have suffered and international trade is exposed. The current situation remains unclear and in a state of flux but some say the world has changed forever.   To try to make sense of the impact of protectionism on marine insurance, we’ve invited three top experts from Europe, Asia and North America to join this podcast. Frédéric Denèfle, Tom Shinya and Sean Dalton discuss the likely impact of the economic actions of our political leaders and predict how this might play out in the world of marine insurance.
