The first episode of 2022! I'm rejigging my podcast to align with my original intentions and today we'll quickly cover the 30 benefits of reading aloud that make you a parenting superstar.

Join me on this week's adventure into the benefits of reading aloud. There are at least 30 benefits, which is nuts! How many other activities can you think of that give your kids and YOU this many benefits every single time? It truly is magical!

Join me while we talk about how having books in your home influence your child's learning development, how many books you could have to the biggest impact, what is and how to create your own home learning environment.

Well... I know it's been awhile. I let life and overwhelm get the better of me, BUT I'm back!!

Today we’re going to talk about Dr John S Hutton and his amazing research using an MRI to  prove what previous decades of studies has always said "Early reading is essential future success". We discuss the brain fireworks, or synapses, and how those reacted differently when a) a child was just being read to b) when a child was listening to and looking at a picture book and c) when a child was watching an animated story. And how imagination is the key to innovation.

Join me while we continue our discussion from last episode on building your child's brain listening network and a study which discovered why some kindy kids are more advanced than others. And why you shouldn't expect your children to do or say things that you don’t do yourself. If you want them to say please and thank you, you need to model that behaviour by saying please and thank you to your children as well as others, because “you can’t get out what you don’t put it”

Let's talk about how reading aloud actually affects your child's brain. With reading aloud, we actually have the ability to alter and improve our children’s brain architecture. You never thought you were that powerful, did you? Like a house, our brains need a foundation, and this foundation impacts all future learning and behaviour. So it’s needless to say, but the stronger the foundation, the better!

You might be wondering who reading aloud is for? Spoiler Alert! It's everyone. In the book, The Enchanted Hour by Meghan Cox Gurdon, she says “The experience of reading aloud bathes children of all ages in torrents of words, images, and syntactical rhythms that they might not get anywhere else. It brings joy, engagement, and profound emotional connection with children, teens, adults - everyone. Reading out loud is probably the least expensive and most effective intervention we can make for the good of our families and for the wider culture.”  Think about how much power you have laying around your house, on your bookshelves, just waiting to be brought to life. Throughout this podcast, we'll dive into the single most important thing you should be doing for your children, now and the future adults they will become. It's reading aloud!
