Description

The Commodore 64 had lots of games. Not all of them are good. In Zapped to the Past, we cast a retrospective eye over those games reviewed in each issue of Zzap!64 magazine. Hosted by two lifelong C64 fans, we throw off those rose tinted specs and see if those games are still worth playing today.

Zapped to the Past Episode 236 - The Scares and Scores of John Carpenter
2026/09/20
This week we take a walk on the dark side as we explore the scares and scores of director and composer John Carpenter. We explore how he popularised the slasher genre, tackled aliens from other worlds, told tales of seabound lepers and possessed cars, and even did a biopic of the King himself. On top of this, we examine some of his musical themes that would become as iconic as anything by Williams, Morricone or Hermann.   Films covered in this Episode Assault on Precinct 13 Halloween The Fog Escape from New York The Thing Christine Starman Big Trouble in Little China Prince of Darkness They Live In the Mouth of Madness Find us here: https://zappedtothepast.com/ If you would like to help us out and join our Patreon, find it here: https://www.patreon.com/zappedtothepast If you want to buy a Coffee for Zapped to the Past, go here: https://ko-fi.com/zappedtothepast Need our links in one place - you can do that too: https://online.pubhtml5.com/oowg/grrx/#p=1 Want some Zapped to the Past merch? https://www.zappedtothepast.shop Additional Links John Carpenter - Wikipedia John Carpenter Albertus (typeface) - Wikipedia Directed by John Carpenter - Fonts In Use John Carpenter: The Most Overrated Director of All Time  John Carpenter, Cody Carpenter & Daniel Davies' “What’s In My Bag?” | Amoeba Music  A Five-Point Guide to Horror Movie Maestro John Carpenter | AnOther  The 30 must-hear cult electronic soundtracks  25 Awesome Electronic Film and Television Scores  The 10 Best Electronic Film Scores of All Time | Taste Of Cinema  ‘Everything I know about evil I learned in that small town’: John Carpenter on terrifying the world with Halloween, The Thing and The Fog John Carpenter, Dark Lord of the Film Score The Coupe De Villes - Big Trouble in Little China (Upscaled HD) (1986)

Zapped to the Past Episode 234 - Turn to Page 64...
2026/08/23
This week we roll our D6s for Skill, Strength, and Luck as we take a dive into the world of Fighting Fantasy Gamebooks. This series of books entertained a generation of kids with their tales of derring do and fantasy worlds where YOU were the hero. Starting out as pure fantasy with minotaurs and mazes, they soon encompassed magic, outer space, superheroes and the darkest pits of horror, where anything could happen. It was usually a horrible death, but wasn’t that just part of the fun? 2026/07/19
This week we take a look at a time of bulging biceps, thunderous thighs, and gigantic glutes. We pitch Schwarzenegger against Stallone and ask who provided the most burl for your buck? Who served up the best bicep curl and bulging vein? Who filled the cinema screen with so much man-muscle that not even Cinemascope could cope with it? We look at the films released from 1981 to 1989 from both hunks and dare to answer the question: who was the burliest of them all? Zapped to the Past Episode 225 - The Breadbin of Breadbins Awards
2026/04/26
It comes to this at the end of all things… Yes, after over 200 episodes and 90 issues of Zzap! 64, we finally reach the end of this long, winding and brown road and give ourselves a chance to crown the best of the best and the worst of the worst. Yes, this is the Breadbin of Breadbins Awards where we were going to pit all the winners from previous years against each other in a bare-chested, bare-knuckled, bare-bottomed battle for supremacy! We wondered what games would come out triumphant, bloodied, but unbowed? Could we say what were the best visuals? Who created the best audio? What was the biggest brown stain on the machine? And what would we consider the best game ever to be made for the C64? The fight turned out to be too tough, so consider this a massive celebration and round up of over 200 episodes and nearly 1600 games!  The running order of the awards: Introduction  Breadbin Stats  ZTTP reflections Overall Best Visuals Crapcade Conversion Arcade Heaven Best Audio Craziest Concept Licenced Catastrophe Licenced Dream Worst Game Best Game Patreon Awards Final Thoughts Overall And don’t forget to back our Kickstarter if you want the Book of the Podcast in your hands at https://zappedtothepastbook.com or https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zappedtothepast/zapped-to-the-past Find us here: https://zappedtothepast.com/ If you would like to help us out and join our Patreon, find it here: https://www.patreon.com/zappedtothepast If you want to buy amazing Zapped to the Past merch, go here: https://zappedtothepast.shop https://www.redbubble.com/people/zappedtothepast/shop If you want to buy a Coffee for Zapped to the Past, go here: https://ko-fi.com/zappedtothepast Need our links in one place - you can do that too: https://linktr.ee/zappedtothepast
Zapped to the Past Episode 224 - 1992 Golden Breadbin Awards
2026/04/19
1992 is now but a memory of blood, sweat, gravy and egg - but in keeping with Zapped to the Past tradition we take a look back and cast a blinky and very tired eye over all those games we played from January to November 1992 as covered in Zzap!64 magazine. Why, you may ask? To reward those games that have somehow managed to stick in our memory for more than five minutes for good or for ill. So join us for our annual Golden Breadbin Awards. What had the best audio? Can we decide upon the worst game? What stunned us with its visuals the most? There is only one way to know for sure… The running order of the awards: Introduction  Breadbin Stats  ZTTP reflections on 1992 Best Visuals 1992 Crapcade Conversion 1992 Worst Game 1992 Best Audio 1992 Craziest Concept 1992 Licenced Catastrophe 1992 Best Game 1992 Patreon Awards 1992 Final Thoughts on 1992 Look Ahead to Breadbin of Breadbins Find us here: https://zappedtothepast.com/ If you would support the Zapped to the Past Kickstarter Campaign: https://www.zappedtothepastbook.com https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/zappedtothepast/zapped-to-the-past If you would like to help us out and join our Patreon, find it here: https://www.patreon.com/zappedtothepast If you want to buy amazing Zapped to the Past merch, go here: https://zappedtothepast.shop https://www.redbubble.com/people/zappedtothepast/shop If you want to buy a Coffee for Zapped to the Past, go here: https://ko-fi.com/zappedtothepast Need our links in one place - you can do that too: https://linktr.ee/zappedtothepast https://online.pubhtml5.com/oowg/grrx/#p=1 Want to buy some amazing Zapped to the Past Merch https://zappedtothepast.shop
