In this section the writer shifts from naming names to describing the unnamed. No introduction. No backstory. Just a list of what they did, what they suffered, and what they never received in this lifetime. The crew shares the stunning contrast at the heart of this passage; men and women who conquered kingdoms and raised the dead sitting alongside men and women who were sawed in two, driven into caves, and stripped of everything. David then reads stories from the Book of Judges where we learn about Barak. James then gives some historical background, how God spoke to the Prophet Deborah, promising victory and how Deborah selects Barak to carry out the battle. We learn about the opponent having iron chariots (modern day tanks) and how Barak was terrified to carry out this mission.
