The Market for Jake Guentzel & the Isles big decision
2024/02/26
We are less than two weeks away from the NHL trade deadline and the market is still remarkably quiet. Jason and Frank started with that today on a fresh episode of The DFO Rundown. The first half of today’s pod was straight trade talk, starting with a big conversation about the New York Islanders. They’re continuing to slip in the Eastern Conference playoff race and Gregor says they should be looking to sell off some pieces. The guys had a conversation about which pieces they could move and what their future could look like.  From there, they got into the market for Jake Guentzel and which teams are legitimately in the mix for a player whose spent the bulk of his career riding shotgun with Sidney Crosby. They also talked a little bit about what the return could be. Another top name on the market is Chris Tanev. Jason and Frank each had different ideas of where he could land including the Jets, Stars and Lightning. They also quickly hit on his teammate Noah Hanifin, who had a big weekend. Frank also had a quick thought on what’s going on between Elias Pettersson and the Canucks. In a new edition of Fill in the Blank, Tyler asked the guys about a few teams playoff chances and also, the ceiling for Nikita Kucherov when it comes to his point production. 3:50 - Could the Isles sell? 10:20 -The market for Guentzel 18:55 - Best fits for Guentzel 25:00 - When will CGY move Tanev? 30:35 - Kane’s return to CHI 35:10 - Pettersson & the Canucks 40:15 - Fill in the Blank 50:15 - Rempe’s first week Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Why is the trade market so quiet?
2024/02/22
Frank and Jason are back with another fresh episode of The DFO Rundown as they sunk their teeth into the remarkably quiet trade market in the NHL. The buyers and sellers are beginning to become more clear, but yet there isn’t anything happening in terms of actual moves. Frank explained why there hasn’t been a lot of activity and Gregor talked about a few teams that he thinks are destined to be sellers. That eventually got them onto the topic of the Vegas Golden Knights and their run of injuries. Could Eichel or Stone actually be out for the year? Are the Golden Knights just playing salary cap games once again? The guys debated what could happen if the league thinks the Golden Knights are trying to manipulate the LTIR system once again. Frank has some new names coming to his Trade Targets board including a former Golden Knight who could be heading towards a reunion with the club. Tyler also swung by for a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about Quinton Byfield, who would go first in a 2020 re-draft, how many players the Penguins could trade, and the goalie market. 2:12 - Matthews hits 50 4:10 - No trades in 3 weeks 10:30 - Golden Knight’s injuries 17:40 - New additions to the trade targets board 24:10 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? From there, they quickly hit on what we saw at this years stadium series, which featured some fun costumes from every team except the New York Islanders. The Blue Jackets Have Fired Jarmo Kekalainen
2024/02/15
Today’s podcast started off as normal as any other. Jason and Frank talked about Jake Guentzal leaving last nights loss with an upper-body injury. The Penguins still haven’t gained any sort of momentum this season and the questions about them selling at the deadline remain. The other Pennsylvania team just keeps on humming. Everyone is waiting for the the Flyers to fall off and instead, they’re staying in the race. Will it get to a point where the Flyers won’t want to sell? The guys debated that. Right around the 15 minute mark we got breaking news live on the podcast as the Columbus Blue Jackets fired long-time General Manager Jarmo Kekalainen. The guys reacted to that news live on the podcast. Frank summed it up as “one bad decision after another” adding that it’s “mind-blowing” that he kept his job for eleven years. From there, they talked about Phil Kessel’s chances of cracking the Vancouver Canucks. The veteran forward is skating at the clubs AHL facilities in hopes of earning a spot with the big club. Could he actually make an impact? Jason and Frank debated that. Tyler once again popped in with Buy or Sell, where he asked the guys about a pair of players who hit the 1000 game mark and the scoring race. 1:30 - Guentzal injury 7:00 - Flyers keep winning 11:40 - Blue Jackets fire Kekalainen 23:00 - Kessel to the Canucks? 27:40 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The reaction to Rielly vs Greig
2024/02/12
Frank and Jason are back with a new episode of The DFO Rundown. They started the pod off by talking about their Super Bowl Sundays, which included some nice wins by both guys. They also talked about their go-to Super Bowl spreads. They eventually did get into the hockey talk as they broke down the Morgan Rielly cross-check on Ridley Greig. There has been a lot of over reactions on both sides of this debate and the two gave their thoughts on each fan base's reactions. From there, they did some trade talk. Will the Flames change their minds about becoming sellers? Is Yzerman facing pressure to add to a red-hot Detroit team? The Kings also played their first game under new Head Coach Jim Hiller and came away with a big victory. What could they look to do at the deadline? Tyler swung by with 'Fill in the Blank' where he asked the guys about which teams are most likely to trade their first-round picks and who they like to win the East and West in the regular season. 9:20 - Rielly vs Greig 19:10 - Red Wings heater 25:05 - Kings under new coach 29:10 - The race for the 8th seed Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? One Month Until The Deadline
2024/02/08
We are officially one month away from the NHL trade deadline and that means our very own Frank Seravalli has updated his Trade Targets list. That’s where the guys kicked things off on today’s episode of the podcast. The two remaining Calgary Flames have moved right up to #1 and #2 on the board as Frank expects both Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev to be moved before March 8th. He explained that and talked about the markets for those two defensemen. From there, they went out to the Eastern Conference where a handful of teams have very interesting decisions to make. Pittsburgh forward Jake Guentzal sits at #30 on the board and it’s because the Penguins haven’t decided to make him available yet. Should they? Frank and Jason debated it.  They also talked about what teams like the New Jersey Devils and Tampa Bay Lightning could do in the next few weeks. There are two goalies in the top ten of Frank’s list as well. Where could names like Marc-Andre Fleury and Jake Allen end up? The guys gave their thoughts. Tyler then swung by with a new edition of Buy or Sell where he asked the guys about the Brendan Dillon suspension and how many more first-round picks we could see get moved between now and the deadline. 1:30 - Flames deadline plans 9:05 - Guentzal & the Penguins 16:00 - What will the Devils & Lightning do? 26:10 - The goalie market 37:25 - Coyotes ownership 41:10 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? Recapping a Wild All-Star Week
2024/02/05
The NHL All-Star weekend is usually a quiet time where the league is focused more on taking time off or showing their sponsors a good time than they are on making news happen. Well, that was not the case this weekend. We had two big trades, a coach firing, and some juicy press conferences from both Commissioner Gary Bettman and Marty Walsh from the NHLPA. Walsh blasted the Arizona Coyotes on a handful of issues and that’s led to even more speculation about the future of the Coyotes in the desert. Frank outlined two potential scenarios that he could see play out over the next six months. Bettman unveiled the next plans for the NHL when it comes to international hockey. Frank and Jason gave their thoughts on the Four Nations Face-Off and the plans for the world’s best players to return to the Olympics in 2026. They also hit on the Todd McLellan firing in Los Angeles before getting to Tyler with a new edition of Buy or Sell where he got the guys takes on the Lindholm trade and the Jets adding Sean Monahan. They wrapped up the show with some talk about Frank’s viral moment from the weekend. He clarified his take on Sidney Crosby and gave a longer explanation of things. 4:15 - Future of the Coyotes 13:05 - Upcoming international events 21:00 - New look All-Star weekend 23:15 - McLellan out in LA 29:10 - Fill in the Blank 41:25 - Dubas & the Penguins Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Blue Jackets are a mess
2024/01/29
This season has not gone the way that the Columbus Blue Jackets envisioned. They spent big in the offseason, hired Mike Babcock and looked like a team with real playoff aspirations. Well, things got off the rails very early and the latest chapter involves one of their top prospects, David Jiricek, who sounded off about his lack of playing time in the NHL. Patrik Laine also announced he is stepping away from the team for mental health reasons.  Frank and Jason started things off by talking about the Jiricek situation before getting into Laine. Frank talked about the uptick in players taking mental health leaves.  From there, the guys got into the Brendan Gallagher suspension. Gregor said it should have been closer to ten games while Frank thinks this whole situation reeks of the Department of Player Safety wanting to avoid a potential appeal from the player. The New York Rangers were dealt a big blow over the weekend as they announced that Filip Chytil will miss the remainder of the season with an upper-body injury. That creates a big hole in their lineup that they’ll need to fill ahead of the deadline. Frank thinks they could add two centres before March 8th. They also hit on the playoff races in each the East and West before getting to Tyler with a new edition of Fill in the Blank, where he asked the guys about the Art Ross race, the Blues heater, and who’s the comeback player of the year. 1:22 - Jiricek speaks out 10:20 - Laine steps away 20:50 - Gallagher suspension 24:05 - Rangers deadline plans 26:10 - Playoff races Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? The Latest on the Hockey Canada Investigation
2024/01/25
There has been a lot of news around the hockey world this week but no story is bigger than the sexual assault case connected to the 2018 Team Canada World Junior Team. We finally got news this week from the London, Ontario Police and it came with a handful of NHLers taking leaves of absence. Frank and Jason began today’s podcast by talking about what’s going on and where things go from here. The NHL did their best to bury the story by having Ryan Smith, the Owner of the Utah Jazz, release a statement that he is interested in bringing NHL hockey to Salt Lake City, Utah. Frank shared his disgust with the tactic and then gave some insight into the chances of Smith getting his wish and bringing a team to the state of Utah. Hint: he doesn’t think it will come via expansion. They then got into some hockey talk. Nathan MacKinnon racked up four goals last night and continued his MVP-calibre season. Is he the clear-cut favourite for the Hart? The guys debated. They also talked about the Oilers winning streak, Connor McDavid’s season, and the struggling LA Kings before bringing in Tyler for a new edition of Buy or Sell. He asked the guys about the chances of another coaching change and the Bruin's chances of winning the President’s Trophy again. 4:00 - 2018 World Junior team investigation 21:30 - Will Utah get a team? 23:44 - Nathan MacKinnon’s Hart Case 28:30 - The Oilers winning streak 41:05 - Islanders new coach bump 45:00 - Buy or Sell Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? 2024/01/22
News was breaking all around the NHL over the weekend and to help you get back up to speed, Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli have a new Monday edition of The DFO Rundown for you. The show kicked off with the news that Corey Perry is signing with the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers, who are currently on a 13 game win streak, are expected to sign the former Hart Trophy for around a league minimum cost. Frank Seravalli went over the process Perry went through and a few of the teams that were involved in discussions with him. Moving on from there, the New York Islanders made a coaching change bringing in Patrick Roy, who most recently coached the Quebec Remparts in the QMJHL. Roy replaces Lane Lambert and comes into a team fight for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Can they get it done? Jason and Frank gave their thoughts on their chances. Also on the show, Tyler Yaremchuk joined for his fill in the blank segment. Along with that, Jason and Frank discussed the LA Kings slide, Jonathan Quick's return to LA and the NHL All Star game. 1:00 - Frank's recap of the Jasper Pond Hockey tournament 3:45 - Corey Perry to the Edmonton Oilers 14:40 - Fill in the blank presented by Door Dash 19:20 - Patrick Roy to the New York Islanders 29:50 - Nathan MacKinnon's dominance 35:00 - NHL All Star game 41:00 - Jonathan Quick and the LA Kings slide Hosted on Acast. Are the Flames open for business?
2024/01/18
Things are not going well right now for the Toronto Maple Leafs and that’s exactly where Jason Gregor and Frank Seravalli began today’s podcast. Sheldon Keefe made some interesting comments the other day after the Leaf’s suffered their fourth consecutive loss and that led to the guys breaking down whether or not the Leafs are actually just a few moves away from being a true Stanley Cup contender or if this just won’t be their year. The Leafs will have a chance to bounceback tonight as they face the Calgary Flames, who are another team in an interesting spot. Frank is in Calgary right now and broke down why he believes that despite their recent winning streak, Flames GM Craig Conroy is still open for business. That led to some debate about the kind of impact that Elias Lindholm will have on a contender. Sticking with Canadian teams, Jason wondered about Jacob Chychrun’s future with the Ottawa Senators. There are some rumblings that he could be available and considering his cap hit and term, Frank says he would have value and that the Senators are open to just about anything. They also spent some time talking about the Colorado Avalanche and what they could be looking to add ahead of the trade deadline. Frank talked with their GM recently on a new episode of Frankly Speaking and brought up their need for a goaltender while Gregor thinks that they need to add something to their blueline. Tyler swung by with a new edition of Buy or Sell delivered by DoorDash. He asked the guys about Corey Perry, the Bruins centre depth, and the playoff race out in the Western Conference. 2:35 - Keefe’s comments 12:30 - Flames open to moves 25:20 - Chychrun & the Senators 40:00 - Merzlikins future 42:10 - Buy or Sell 51:30 - Western playoff picture Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team? What are the Leafs going to do in net?
2024/01/15
The guys are back for a Monday edition of the podcast. Jason and Frank started the show with a little bit of chatter about the crazy weather we’ve been getting across both Canada and the USA. They also talked a little bit about the NFL weekend courtesy of our friends at Betano. From there, they talked about a pair of struggling teams in the Pacific Division. While the Oilers and Kraken have been red-hot, the Kings and Golden Knights have both continued to struggle along. They guys debated which one of those two teams should be more concerned with their recent play. They then went out East and talked about the tumultuous weekend by the Toronto Maple Leafs. They had a couple of ugly losses over the last few days, which has led to Sheldon Keefe throwing his lines to a blender. They also have some decisions to make when it comes to their goaltending, which Jason and Frank talked about. On Friday, we got news that the Chicago Blackhawks had signed Nick Foligno to a two-year deal worth a total of $9 million. The Hawks need to get to the cap floor and Foligno is reaping the benefits of that. The guys talked about that and a little about the Hawks rebuild before welcoming in Tyler for this week’s edition of Fill in the Blank where he asked the guys about Terry Ryan’s return to pro hockey, the Jack Adams race, and the All-Star jerseys.  They wrapped up the show by talking about some mid-season awards races from around the league. Gregor also asked Frank about Steven Stamkos’ future in Tampa Bay. 8:00 - Kings & Golden Knights struggles 14:00 - The Leafs struggles & their goaltending 29:50 - Foligno extension & the Hawks rebuild 32:30 - Fill In The Blank 43:05 - Mid-Season Awards 51:15 - Stamkos’ Future in Tampa Bay Want to hear more from Frank, Jason and the entire DFO team?
