Immersive events have really taken off in the last decade. Building on events like Renaissance fairs, L.A.R.P.s, and other themed festivals, Wasteland Weekend and now Neotropolis (along with several others inspired by them) are costumes-mandatory festivals with fully themed areas where no-one looks out of place.  You can choose to be in character or just be yourself, but either way - you're in it!
