Season 6, #3: Disc-Continued
2026/08/20
We all saw it coming, but most of us hoped it wasn't true: the next console generation is taking the first step toward a digital-only future. Sony has confirmed disc production for new game releases will end in January 2028. The rumor mill suggests Microsoft is considering a move in the same direction. That leaves Nintendo as the only holdout and last bastion of physical games, and even then, they've already begun distributing some games as digital-only with their Game Key Cards. We sat down to share our thoughts on this major development and what we think it means for the industry moving forward. And how will it impact us individually? Do we see ourselves buying fewer games in the future? Will it impact our buying and playing habits at all? Do we see this digital-only trend continuing on across all media, or do we think we'll see a reversal due to consumer backlash and younger generations' desire for a return to tangible media? Listen to our latest episode for more.

Season 5, #1: GDC 2025: The Uncertainties of the Future, the Importance of Preserving the Past
2025/03/25
Robert and Angela just spent the last week at this year’s GDC. Between the fun and experimental games and the general excitement of the conference, there was an underlying sense of reservation and unease about where the industry is headed. It was most palpable in some of the sessions they attended, particularly on the state of PC and console games, AI, and games preservation. In this episode, Robert and Angela lead Zack and Dom in a discussion about their takeaways from these sessions. The group covers how the industry is having to grapple with the dangers of AI, the very real risk of the loss of games and gaming history, and how gamers’ changing behaviors — and developers’ continued tone deaf decisions — have the industry standing at a crossroads (or possibly even a precipice). Timestamps 0:00: Introductions and what Dom's been playing (Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, Ender Lilies: Quietus of the Knights, Ender Magnolia: Bloom in the Mist, Lies of P, Split Fiction) 11:01: What Robert's been playing (Princess Peach: Showtime!, Super Mario RPG, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker) 20:23: What Angie's been playing (Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Hello Kitty Island Adventures) 38:38: What Zack's been playing (Rise of the Ronin, Dynasty Warriors: Origins, Avowed, Pillars of Eternity, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Hi-Fi Rush, Cocoon, Chants of Sennaar, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, Assassin's Creed Shadows) 1:00:13: GDC coverage, starting with Day of the Devs highlights (inKonbini, Out of Sight, Ultimate Sheep Racoon, Star Fetchers, Demonschool, Super Farming Boy) 1:21:31: GDC itself and highlights (Spirit X Strike, Mononoke No Kuni, Big Hops, The Bustling World) 1:39:34: GDC session discussion, touching on topics from the following sessions: The State of PC and Console Games in 2025Game AI Summit: The Human Cost of Generative AIPreserving the Past for the Future: A PlayStation Case StudyCapturing Game History Bits by Bits

Season 4, #3: Just the Absolute State of the Gaming Industry
2024/10/04
2024 has not been a good year for gaming. With thousands of people laid off and counting, multiple studio closures, and one flop AAA release after another, the industry is facing a crisis that it doesn't seem to understand how to contend with. We discuss our thoughts on the implosion of Ubisoft — one of the worst offenders in this mess — the unbelievably embarrassing failure of Concord; the lukewarm response to the unveiling of the PS5 Pro; the most recent layoffs at Activision Blizzard; and California's attempts at making consumers more informed about what they're really paying for when buying digital media. Timestamps 0:00 - Introductions. 2:00 - What Angie's been playing. 12:51 - What Robert's been playing. 21:43 - What Dom's been playing. 30:21 - What Zack's been playing. 51:08 - Concord, Star Wars Outlaws, and other recent smash hits. 1:21:29 - Consumer opinions may meet deaf ears, but consumer behavior cannot be ignored. Season 3, #4: It's a Bug, Not a Feature
2023/05/16
Glitches, day 1 patches, poor performance, and underwhelming quality. In this episode, we discuss (and do a little venting about) the unfortunate new normal of the games industry: releasing imperfect games that need to be patched upon release or that simply fail to live up to expectations and hype. Timestamps: 0:00:00 - Introductions and what we’ve been playing. 0:53:17 - Metacritic Fantasy Draft Bloodbath. 1:04:17 - Glitches are bad. 1:45:12 - Glitches are … good?
Season 3, #3: Reflections and Predictions: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom
2023/04/04
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild completely revamped the series, making a sharp detour away from the well-worn formula that most of the games have followed since A Link to the Past. Its sequel, Tears of the Kingdom, is set to continue the story of Link and Zelda's adventures in this iteration of Hyrule. But while we're all Zelda fans here at 7 Minutes — some of us more than others — we're not all in agreement about how we feel about the new direction the series has taken. How did we feel about Breath of the Wild in 2017 versus how we feel about it now? What do we think of Tears of the Kingdom from the very carefully teased, minimal footage we've seen and info we know? And what do we want from the game? Tune in to find out. Timestamps: 0:00 - Introductions and what we’ve been playing. 48:54 - Zack’s thoughts on Breath of the Wild. 55:39 - Dom’s thoughts on Breath of the Wild. 1:03:23 - Robert’s thoughts on Breath of the Wild. 1:15:55 - Angie’s thoughts on Breath of the Wild. 1:27:16 - Dom’s thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom. 1:34:00 - Robert’s thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom. 1:41:18 - Angie’s thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom. 1:52:28 - Zack’s thoughts on Tears of the Kingdom.
