Description

Robin Hood is one of the most ubiquitous figures in the English-speaking world. He’s been the star of countless films, television shows, books, games, and branded merchandise from baking supplies to investment apps. Whether he’s wearing a dark shrouding hood or a jaunty pointed cap, there’s a distinct image that comes to mind when you hear the name. Our mission is to dissect that image. Through interviews with academics and experts we’ll be taking a focused look on what one would actually expect of a forest-dwelling outlaw in late 12th century England. How many Merry Men could comfortably dwell within Sherwood Forest? How extensive was the authority of a local Sheriff? Would those tights of Lincoln green be comfortable to wear? You know, the important stuff. Interview episodes will be interspersed with episodes delving into our pop-culture portrayals as we take a chronological look at Robin Hood’s extensive filmography one movie at a time. So string your bows, prepare a lusty laugh, and come join us in the greenwood. Episode 78: Kitbashing the Legends of Robin Hood with Matt Burns
2026/10/07
As of this recording, a new Robin Hood themed tabletop game has reached its crowdfunding goal. 'Outlaws: The Curse of Sherwood Forest' is a cooperative skirmish game that blends the legends of Robin Hood and King Arthur with traditional English folklore. The game's writer, Matt Burns, joined me in the Greenwood to discuss the game, how it plays, and how he used it to help him explore themes around hope and despair. Episode 76: Splitting Arrows- The Best Robin on Four Legs with 'Wishbone: Paw Prints of Thieves' from 1995
2026/08/11
Ben Curly and Mike Nichols return to the Greenwood to share their infectious enthusiasm for a jack russell terrier with a penchant for classic literature from the mid 90s. Meanwhile, Thaddeus and Rick rediscover the purity and thoughtfulness that was children's programming on public television. At a time when major media productions of Robin Hood depictions are... grim... it felt especially timely to encounter an adaptation that puts a real emphasis on making the inspirational elements of Robin Hood feel applicable to a modern audience. As inspired by this episode, 10% of all proceeds raised by Into the Greenwood from June-September will be donated to the World Central Kitchen. Episode 74: Splitting Arrows- We Have the Kevin Costner Version at Home with Robin Hood: Prince of Sherwood from 1994
2026/06/22
What sort of film would you have made when you were 15? That's the question we ask as we watch what is likely to be the most obscure Robin Hood film we've encountered to date. Ari Papke joins Richard Hopkins-Lutz and Thaddeus Papke in the Greenwood as we cross our fingers and hope to be charmed by this low budget passion project from the 90s. 2026/06/01
Medieval literature expert, Dr. Mark Truesdale, joins us in the Greenwood to discuss how early Robin Hood literature fits within the scope of the popular 'King and Commoner' tales that were being told around the same time period. We discuss the medieval tales and how they've resonated in our modern Robin Hood adaptations. Episode 72: Side Targets- Fighting off Banality with Robin and the Hoods
2026/05/11
Introducing the first "Side Targets" episode of Into the Greenwood! This is the series where Thaddeus and Rick take a look at a randomly selected film or series that provides some sort of modern spin on Robin Hood or is just outside what one might consider a standard adaptation. Our first selection is the family-friendly 2024 Sky original 'Robin and the Hoods', a film that made the co-hosts wax nostalgic for one of their favorite role playing games from decades ago. Episode 70: Splitting Arrows- A Mel Brooks Double Feature from 1975 & 1993
2026/03/31
Two Robin Hood parodies helmed by Mel Brooks enter... one podcast episode leaves... Theo Papke returns to the Greenwood to join Richard Hopkins-Lutz and Thaddeus Papke in a discussion covering both 1975's 'When Things Were Rotten' and 1993's 'Robin Hood: Men in Tights'. It's an episode jam-packed with dated references, recycled gags, and a whole lot of laughter. Listen to the end to hear how Dick Gautier and fan-favorite Cary Elwes fare as they both get added to our list of ranked Robin Hoods! 2026/02/25
Fan favorite guest AJ returns to the Greenwood to join Thaddeus and Rick for their first viewing of the film that inspired their beloved Men in Tights. How does this blockbuster from the early '90s hold up? Does Alan Rickman's take on the Sheriff of Nottingham really deserve the amount of praise it gets? How will Kevin Costner fare on our ranked list of Robin Hoods? Will Rick manage to endure the Bryan Adams song? It's one of our longest episodes for one of the biggest Robin Hood films!!! Episode 67: Into the Winterwood with Alex Kaufman
2025/12/23
There’s nothing in the lively and pop-music infused Robin Hood pantomime performances or in 'The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood' by Howard Pyle that speaks of winter time or the Christmas holiday, but in his book ‘Christmastime Texts and the Popularity of the Robin Hood Tradition’, professor Alex Kaufman lays out the history behind how that book and Robin Hood pantomime performances came to be part of the Christmas tradition and, despite all of their color and greenery, can be considered part of what he has deemed the Winterwood. 50% of all proceeds that go to support Into the Greenwood during the month of December will be donated to the National Immigration Law Center. Episode 66: On the Ground During the Midway Blitz with Finn Hardy
2025/12/08
While on this podcast we often use Robin Hood as a lens for learning more about folklore or the medieval past, it is is the enduring applicability of how we have come to understand the figure that keeps him relevant. To that end, I reached out to a friend of mine after hearing about the beatings and abuse he'd received at the hands of law enforcement officers for simply exercising his right of Free Speech. Finn Hardy joins me in the greenwood to discuss the reality of what's been happening on the streets of Chicago during the fall of 2025. 50% of all proceeds that go to support Into the Greenwood during the month of December will be donated to the National Immigration Law Center.
