262. The Mistake Christians Make When Trying to Follow God | Rachael Groll
2026/09/22
What if one of the biggest mistakes we make in following God is asking Him to bless the direction we’ve already chosen? In this conversation, I sit down with Rachael Groll, author, pastor, speaker, and host of the Hearing Jesus Podcast, to talk about what it actually looks like to let God lead.Rachael shares why following God sometimes means stepping into the water before you know how He’s going to make a way, why God may use a completely different strategy than He has in the past, and why surrendering our expectations is so important if we want to hear Him clearly. We also talk about the role Scripture plays in discerning God’s voice, how our view of God affects the way we read the Bible, and one of Rachael’s favorite approaches to prayer: “I never say amen.” Instead of treating prayer like something that starts and stops, she tries to live in an ongoing conversation with God and gives Him permission to interrupt her plans. If you’ve ever wondered, “Am I actually following God—or am I just asking Him to follow me?” this conversation is for you.Rachael’s work is focused on helping people understand Scripture and hear God more clearly through biblical teaching, Bible studies, and the Hearing Jesus Podcast.👉 Learn more about Rachael: rachaelgroll.com👉 Listen to the Hearing Jesus Podcast through Rachael’s website👉 Join the FREE Hearing God Challenge: hearinggodchallenge.comCHAPTERS00:00 Are You Asking God to Bless Your Plans?04:14 When God Changes the Strategy14:34 The Biggest Mistake in Trying to Hear God18:13 Reading the Bible vs. Actually Studying It25:53 How to Trust God When You Don’t Understand31:10 “I Never Say Amen” — Hearing God Throughout the Day39:00 Casting Your Crowns & Surrendering the OutcomeIf this conversation helps you, subscribe for more conversations and practical experiences designed to help you hear God, deepen your friendship with Jesus, and live from connection instead of fear.
261. You’re Trying to Hear God From the Wrong Picture of Him | Kari Bartkus
2026/09/15
What if the reason you’re struggling to hear God isn’t that He isn’t speaking—but that you’re listening through the wrong picture of Him?Many of us grew up believing that if God speaks, He’ll probably ask us to do something difficult, uncomfortable, or something we don’t want to do. But what if God actually enjoys being with you? What if some of His invitations sound more like, “Come rest,” “Slow down,” “Go play,” or even, “Let’s do this together”?In this conversation, I sit down with Christian speaker and spiritual director Kari Bartkus to explore what it looks like to hear God in ordinary life.We talk about:• Why hearing God doesn’t have to look the same for everyone• Finding the ways you naturally connect with God• Silence, journaling, nature, music, baking, and everyday life with Jesus• Why God may be inviting you to slow down instead of accomplish more• How fear can distort the way we interpret God’s voice• What it means to believe that God genuinely delights in being with you• A simple journaling question you can use to begin hearing God todayIf you’ve been trying harder and harder to hear God, this conversation may invite you to try something different: stop striving for the perfect spiritual experience and start noticing the God who is already with you.🔥 TAKE THE FREE HEARING GOD CHALLENGELearn simple, practical ways to recognize God’s voice and deepen your relationship with Him:https://hearinggodchallenge.com/🌿 CONNECT WITH KARI BARTKUSKari helps women encounter God through Scripture, reflective journaling, and gentle spiritual practices.https://karibartkus.com/🎧 You can also find Kari’s Journal Gently podcast and her other resources through her website.CHAPTERS00:00 The Picture of God That Makes Hearing Him Harder01:51 Kari’s Journey Into Spiritual Direction08:00 Helping People Connect With God10:12 Finding Your Natural Way of Hearing God13:10 Silence, Solitude & Listening Prayer18:59 Being Present With People Who Are Hurting26:10 God’s Invitation to Be Present30:41 What If God Actually Enjoys Being With You?36:06 God Delights in Spending Time With You40:30 A Simple Journaling Prompt for Hearing GodOne question to take with you today:“God, what do You want me to know today?”You may be surprised by where His answer finds you.
260. How To Pray With ADHD | Tom Obenchain
2026/09/08
This conversation I have with Tom is one I keep thinking about. He grew up with undiagnosed ADHD, and for years the prayer he'd been taught (kneel down, stay quiet, talk in order) never worked for his mind... he'd fall asleep before he got anywhere. Then he found something that changed everything: writing his prayers instead of trying to hold them in his head. I invite you into what he discovered, and what fifteen years of listening back has taught him about God's voice. Here's what we explore:▪️How undiagnosed ADHD made traditional prayer feel impossible for him▪️The practice of prayer journaling that let him pray for an hour without losing focus▪️What happened the first time he "turned the pen over" and let God answer back▪️A moment that showed him he could receive the same love he watched God give to broken people▪️How he uses AI now to search fifteen years of journal entries for patterns in what God has said to him▪️What the wind combing through a canyon taught him about letting goChapters00:00 Intro02:46 Tom's Story With Undiagnosed ADHD06:04 The First Time He Knew God Was Real09:00 Why Traditional Prayer Never Worked for His ADHD Brain11:44 Discovering the Practice of Prayer Journaling17:12 Turning the Pen Over and Learning to Hear God's Voice19:12 Learning to Receive the Love He Saw God Give Others27:24 Voice to Text, AI, and a Practice That Keeps Refining36:00 What Following Jesus Looks Like for Him Today39:06 Reading Fifteen Years of God's Counsel in Real TimeIf Tom's story stirred anything in you... especially if you've ever felt like your brain just isn't built for the way prayer is usually taught... 259. The Unfair Advantage of Knowing Who You Really Are
2026/09/01
In this conversation I have with Barry, a coach who has spent years exploring identity and listening prayer, we talk about the “unfair advantage” of knowing what's already true about who you are in Christ, and how that changes fear, anger, hearing God, and everyday life.Barry has spent years learning about identity, listening prayer, and seeing people through the truth of who God says they are. His approach has been shaped by teachers including Jamie Winship, Baxter Kruger, Dan Mohler, and others.Expect to learn why your greatest fear may actually point toward something important about your identity, how to help someone hear truth from God rather than simply telling them what is true, what Barry does when someone asks “Is this me or God?”, why grace matters so much when learning to hear God's voice, what it practically means to be one with Christ, how to stay connected to what God is saying when fear takes over, why circumstances aren't always the highest level of truth, and how to recognize the life and love of Jesus happening in ordinary moments. One of the ideas I keep coming back to from this conversation is that we can spend years trying to become something that God is already inviting us to receive as true. As Barry puts it, the shift happens when we begin coming into agreement with what is already true about us in Christ. And that changes the question. Instead of only asking, “How do I get rid of this fear?” we can begin asking, “Jesus, what do You know about me right now? What do You want me to know about this?”Chapters00:00 Knowing What's Already True About Who You Are01:42 Seeing People Through the Lens of Identity04:22 What Your Greatest Fear May Reveal06:51 Helping People Hear Truth From God Themselves10:34 When God Says, “I'm Not Disappointed in You”17:27 Is It Me or Is It God?20:30 Letting Jesus Reveal the Heart of the Father24:09 What It Means to Be One in Christ29:22 Meeting Grace in the Present Moment33:27 Who Gets to Define What Life Is?If something in this conversation stirred something in you, I invite you to just sit with it for a moment. God is present with you now, and maybe a simple question to bring to Him is, “What do You want me to know about who I really am?”🔗 Sign up for the next Hearing God Challenge - https://hearinggodchallenge.com/
258. The Word God Gave Her When She Wanted to Be Someone Else | Sandy Martin
2026/08/18
In this conversation I have with Sandy Martin, she walks me through the word God gave her when she wanted to be someone else, and why it took her years to actually receive it.Sandy spent 24 years as a church secretary and has walked with God through an abusive first marriage, a lifetime of anxiety, and a season of near-total isolation in the woods of Oregon, learning along the way what it actually means to hear His voice. Here's what we explore:▪️The word God gave Sandy when she wanted to be someone else, and why she almost didn't receive it▪️An out-of-body experience of God's peace in the middle of physical abuse▪️"There's beauty in the breakdowns"... what she heard God say the day her car broke down in the mountains▪️A journaling and alphabet gratitude practice that shifts her whole day▪️How God restored and healed her relationship with her abusive ex-husband before he unexpectedly passed away▪️Learning that prenatal wounding can pass from a mother to her child, and what healing that looked like years later▪️Why she now calls her small, isolated community her actual church▪️Being called a "lighthouse," and what it's meant to have strangers show up at her doorChapters:00:00 Introduction02:00 A Lifetime of Fear and Anxiety04:00 Leaving Her Body to Feel God's Peace During the Abuse05:34 There's Beauty in the Breakdowns10:27 A Journaling and Alphabet Gratitude Practice12:37 The Word God Gave Her: You Are the Harbor, Not the Wave21:18 Assignments From God in an Isolated New Community24:23 Finding Church in an Unlikely Community31:08 Called a Lighthouse: Strangers Showing Up at Her Door33:18 Restoration and Healing With Her First Husband Before He DiedIf something in this conversation stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 257. The 10-Minute Prayer Experiment That Could Change Your Life | Jody Hovda
2026/08/04
I gave God ten minutes. That's it... ten minutes of silence on a balcony in Caracas, with two highways roaring past and a stinky attitude about whether He'd actually say anything back. This conversation I have with Jody Hovda gets into what that experiment became, and where prayer went for her once she stopped telling God what to do and started listening instead.Jody has spent years walking with people through spiritual formation and discipleship, including her work with Cultivate. She's lived overseas, discipled women through hard seasons, and has a gift for helping people notice where God already is instead of chasing where they think He should be.Expect to hear the full story behind the ten minutes of silence that started it all, what changed when Jody moved from petitioning God to listening for Him, the story of a roadside decision that turned into an act of kindness, why she calls painful seasons "the manure" and how that framing actually produces growth, the difference between the two kinds of knowing God (intellectual and experiential), and how believing every person is an image-bearer changes the way you drive, parent, and stand in line at the grocery store, and more...If something in this conversation stirs something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 256. God Gave You an Imagination for a Reason (Here's How to Use It to Hear Him) | Misty Marascalco
2026/07/28
This conversation I have with Misty Marascalco is one that surprised even me, because about an hour in, she saw something in the spirit she'd never seen before... all of us sitting at her table with Jesus. We get into how she went from a conservative upbringing where prayer was mostly "dump and run" to seeing visions, hearing Him speak identity over her, and now walking others through the same journey.Misty is the author of a book about her own path into hearing God through vision and imagination, and now leads inner healing and deliverance prayer with people all over the country. You can find her book here - https://www.just1grain.com/Here's what we explore:▪️How a movie about the crucifixion cracked open something a lifetime in church hadn't touched▪️Her first vision during worship, and the words that came with it: "you are a gate breaker"▪️The table encounter where Jesus began undoing a lifetime of lies about who she was▪️Why the same imagination the enemy can hijack is also the very place Jesus loves to meet you▪️How Scripture itself, Abraham, the Psalms, Jesus' parables, Nicodemus, is full of invitations to imagine▪️A live activation you can experience right along with us, picturing Jesus meeting you at a tableIf any of this stirs something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 255. What Happens When You Sit With God in Complete Silence | Roy Moran
2026/07/21
This conversation I have with Roy Moran is about something I hear from so many people I work with... the silence. What do you do when you sit down to pray and just get nothing back? Roy walked me through his own journey with that exact question, and how solitude became a discipline he couldn't live without.Roy Moran spent 25 years pioneering the Hybrid Church model at Shoal Creek before joining New Generations, where he now works with disciple-making movements around the world. He's the author of Spent Matches. You can learn more about his work at Mercy Alliance. We get into why Roy stopped filling his prayer time with talking and started learning to just be quiet, what to do when your mind won't settle even after you've gone silent, and how that discipline ended up changing the way he experiences God's love, not just in his head, but in his body.Chapters:00:00 Intro: How Roy Got Started in Disciple-Making03:20 Why "Jesus Commands Us to Make Disciples" Is False05:33 Gravitational vs Catalytic Leadership09:15 How Roy's Journey of Listening to God Began11:34 Learning to Sit in Silence With God24:19 Trading a Spirit of Success for Perseverance29:51 The Fear Behind Our Demand for Answers34:34 The Prodigal Son Picture That Changed Everything43:41 Moving From Striving to ReceivingIf the silence has felt more like absence than connection, I don't think you're missing something. 254. Why Copying How Someone Else Hears God Doesn't Work | Anne de Leyser
2026/07/07
This is a conversation I have with Anne de Leyser. Anne leads Local House of Prayer, the movement that grew out of Ffald y Brenin and The Grace Outpouring, and we get into what over ten years of listening to God's whispers has taught her about ordinary people carrying real authority right where they already live. We talk about praying "teach me how to pray" instead of assuming you already know, why the way you hear God looks different from anyone else's and that's not something to fix, kids who heard God before anyone taught them to, the difference between asking God to bless someone and speaking that blessing over them, and what she's learned about chronos time, kairos time, and not giving up right before the breakthrough. 253. 8 Months Of Deeply Listening To God | Michele Lewis
2026/06/30
Michele has been part of our community for eight months, and in that time she went from believing she was fundamentally broken to telling me she hasn't felt that way since. In this conversation she walks me through the marriage she entered without ever praying about it, the year that took her mom and nearly her faith, and what it's actually looked like to hear God's voice in the small, practical stuff of her life. Toward the end we pray together, and something opens up in her about why it's felt safer to keep love out than risk it leaving again.Michele is a member of our Receive Academy community who's spent the last eight months learning to recognize God's voice in her everyday life, from prayer to parenting to driving in traffic. Here's what we explore:▪️ How a belief that she was fundamentally broken kept her from expecting God would actually come through for her, and what shifted once that healed▪️ The morning she finally saw Jesus' eyes after eight months of sensing Him near without seeing them▪️ What happened when she started asking God how much to earn before her DoorDashing shifts▪️ Realizing she had pictured God acting like her mother instead of trusting Him as Father▪️ A live prayer where we get underneath a fist wrapped around her heart, holding pain because letting love in once meant watching it leaveChapters00:00 Intro01:05 Becoming a Single Mom at Nineteen and the Miracles That Followed04:05 Marrying Without Ever Praying About It06:56 Growing Up in a Split Faith Family and Hearing Her First Name From God08:54 A Year That Took Her Mom, Her Son's Faith, and Nearly Her Own11:19 Six Weeks of Hearing Not Yet Before Joining the Community13:16 Seeing His Eyes and Feeling Time Stretch16:23 Healing the Belief That She Was Broken20:36 Asking God How Much to Earn and Realizing She'd Pictured Him Like Her Mother27:24 A Live Prayer for the Fist Around Her HeartIf something in this stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 252. Your Body Can Tell You When You're Actually Hearing God | Denita Bremer
2026/06/24
This conversation I have with Denita Bremer started with a simple question, what happens in your body when the inner critic tells you you're not enough. We followed it into my own story with my parents, into the ways I learned to hide, and into something surprising Denita heard from Jesus in a meditation right before we got on this call.Denita Bremer is a life and trauma coach who works especially with Latter-day Saint women, blending trauma-informed, somatic, and Christ-centered coaching. Here's what we explore:▪️Why going to the body, not just the logic, is often the doorway into what the inner critic is really protecting▪️How the way we related to our parents growing up shapes the way we relate to God▪️Why anger can be a sign of something God made you to care about, not something to manage away▪️How the criticism you've heard your whole life might be pointing straight at your gift00:00 Going to the Body When the Critic Says You're Not Enough03:09 What "Not Enough" Feels Like in the Body07:00 Learning to Hide What You Really Wanted11:22 Why the Gift Is Often Hidden in the Criticism14:13 Learning You Don't Have to Belong to What Hurt You17:36 Anger as a Sign of What God Made You to Care About22:46 The Gift Hidden in "You Talk Too Much"25:01 A Meditation, a Question to Jesus, and an Unexpected AnswerIf something here stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 251. This Woman Obeyed A Prompting From God And Now 150,000 People Are Following Jesus | Jennifer Awilli
2026/06/17
This conversation I have with Jennifer Awili is one I'll be thinking about for a long time. She's a 34-year-old accountant from Uganda who felt a quiet prompting from God to go speak to eight men drinking alcohol on the edge of a war zone... and forty people gave their lives to Christ that afternoon. Four years later, over 150,000 people have come to the Lord through a movement she never planned to lead.Jennifer Awili is an accountant with Open Grace International, a disciple-making organization based in Uganda. She leads a grassroots DMM (Disciple Making Movement) in the Karamoja region, one of the most dangerous and historically violent areas in East Africa. Here's what we explore:▪️ The fear Jennifer had to push through to walk up to those eight men... and what happened when one of them, around 60 years old, started crying and asking if God could really forgive someone like him▪️ How the Karamoja region, a place where people locked their doors at 6:30pm out of fear, is now experiencing real, measurable peace because ex-warriors are leading discipleship groups▪️ The oral learner method Jennifer's team uses to disciple people who can't read or write, and how it multiplies through wives sharing with husbands and parents sharing with children▪️ What Jennifer says it actually feels like when God is speaking... and how she knows the difference between a random thought and a real prompting▪️ The four-tier leadership structure (facilitators, coordinators, coaches, coach of coaches) that allowed this movement to grow far beyond what Jennifer could manage alone▪️ Miracles she's witnessed firsthand, including more than 20 women who had been barren for over 15 years conceiving after prayer▪️ What Jennifer would say to any woman... or anyone... who feels too ordinary, too disqualified, or too afraid to take the step God is inviting them intoChapters: 00:00 Intro01:43 Jennifer's Background and the Karamoja Region04:50 The Day She Obeyed: Eight Men, Forty Lives, One Afternoon07:40 How the Gospel Brought Peace to a Place Known for Violence15:53 What Listening to God Actually Sounds Like in Practice24:06 Miracles and God Using People Nobody Expected31:25 What Jennifer Would Say to Anyone Afraid to Take the StepIf Jennifer's story stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it. 250. Why We Don't Believe God Speaks to Us Personally | Laurie Shopland
2026/06/09
This conversation I have with my friend Laurie Shopland opened with a prayer, and what surfaced in that prayer set the tone for everything that followed. Laurie's story includes a stranger who walked up to her husband in a church lobby one Sunday, told him he was actually there to talk to her, and delivered a word so specific that she's read it at least once a week ever since. In this conversation, we trace how she got from ritual religion and real anger at God... to 4:30am morning prayer with her husband, a three-year TED Talk journey through two rejections, and what it looks like when God starts inviting you further out than feels financially safe.Laurie Shopland is a coach and speaker from Canada who works at the intersection of emotional wellbeing, identity, and truth-telling. She recently gave a TEDx Talk on truth-telling and the misuse of non-disclosure agreements, and she's on a path of what she describes as being a lighthouse to the nation. Here's what we explore:▪️ Why we discount what God says to us through other people... even when it's exactly right▪️ Laurie's faith story: from a denomination of ritual (not relationship), through loss and anger at God, to a Holy Spirit moment she didn't go looking for▪️ What secular corporate coaching looks like when you know every moment of peace is the Holy Spirit▪️ The fear underneath the invitation to bring God more explicitly into her work, and the financial scarcity sitting under that▪️ Three years and two rejections: the TED Talk journey and why the timing couldn't have been any earlier▪️ Learning to stop softening what you hear from God and just stand in it▪️ A vision of a clock and a little toy, and why those two images have become her daily anchorChapters:00:00 Intro and Introducing Laurie Shopland02:06 Opening Prayer03:32 The Vision Story: When God Confirmed Himself Through a Stranger09:41 Laurie's Faith Story: From Ritual Religion and Anger to a Holy Spirit Encounter13:58 Helping People Find Peace in Corporate Settings Without Saying "God"17:15 The Fear of Going Further With God-Language at Work20:41 Three Years, Two Rejections, and the Perfect Timing of a TED Talk27:20 What Daily Listening to God Actually Looks Like31:05 Learning to Speak With Authority About What You Hear From God40:50 The Clock and the Stillness: Trusting God's TimingIf something in this conversation landed for you, I'd just love for you to sit with it... and notice what God might want you to receive from it.🔗 Check out Laurie's work - https://shoplandcoaching.com/🔗 See Laurie's TEDx Talk - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c4Ftcp5WOf4🔗 Join The Receive Academy - https://receiveacademy.com/🔗 Sign up for the next Hearing God Challenge - https://hearinggodchallenge.com/

2026/06/02
This conversation I have with my friend Ashley Romney started with a simple question about her journey with God, and somewhere in the middle of it she said something that caught me off guard... I had to stop and just sit with it. 2026/05/26
This conversation I have with Julie Obenchain is one I've wanted to record for a long time. She's been showing up to the daily Receive Experience call every single morning for three years, longer than anyone else in the community. And in that time she's navigated heart surgery, dialysis, kids who've walked away from God, and seasons where the heavens felt completely silent. What she shares here is real.Expect to learn what it actually looks like to keep showing up to God when He's not removing the burden, how "little nuggets" of truth from God can carry more weight than a hundred answered prayers, what Julie received when she asked Jesus what makes Him laugh, how the word "repentance" shifted from shame to something she could actually do, why mission and activity follow relationship rather than the other way around, and more...Chapters:00:00 When Pressure Creeps Into Ministry and What To Do With It05:04 Julie's Story: Heart Surgery, Dialysis, and Silence From God09:26 When Kids Walk Away and God Says "Just Keep Loving Them"13:22 Why Small Nuggets of Truth Are Enough to Change Everything17:00 How Julie's View of God Has Shifted Through the Hard Years23:21 Jesus Spinning in the Office Chair and What It Revealed45:00 Living From Identity Instead of Striving Toward MissionIf something in this conversation stirred something in you, I'd love for you to sit with it.
