Welcome to another episode of Financial Revelations – The Sin of Retirement™ with David Szafranski!
Economic News & Market Outlook David discusses the ongoing tensions surrounding Iran and the Strait of Hormuz, where a significant share of the world's oil supply travels. He also looks at the Federal Reserve's upcoming meeting and why he believes the economy and markets remain in a relatively strong position, with steady consumer spending, a resilient job market, and manufacturing activity showing signs of recovery.
Questions of the Week When should you sell an investment? David explains why it's important to consider whether an investment still meets your needs and has accomplished what you intended.
Is the technology sector's run over? David doesn't think so. With continued demand and a backlog for computer chips, he believes there may still be room for growth.
And what does David think about Apple's latest products? He shares his thoughts on the newest technology and why he doesn't want every part of life to revolve around tech.

Inflation, Oil & the Economy Inflation numbers came out last week, and the latest report was better than expected in some respects. David looks at two important measures: headline inflation and core inflation.
Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 2.4% over the past molnth, down from 2.5% in July. Headline CPI held at 3.4% . Energy prices, particularly gasoline, have been an important contributor to recent inflation readings.
David also takes a look at historical numbers, including the 10-year Treasury yield, gasoline prices, and how energy costs can affect the economy and inflation.
Listener Question: Capital Gains This episode also features a listener question: If you buy a stock for $10 and sell it for $30, what is the capital gains tax?
David explains how capital gains work, how the taxable gain is calculated, and the factors that can affect how much tax you may owe.

The Fed Raises Rates: What Happens Next?
2026/09/16
Welcome to another episode of Financial Revelations – The Sin of Retirement™ with David Szafranski!
If you or your church are interested in serving on a future mission trip to the Amazon, visit www.nativosusa.org to learn more about opportunities to help provide clean water, build churches, and share the Gospel with remote communities.
David is also available to speak to churches, businesses, and organizations about leadership, money management, and the relationship between faith and finances. To schedule a speaking engagement, contact [email protected].
David's book, The Sin of Retirement™, is available at www.sinofretirement.com, where you can also find official merchandise. The book is also available on Amazon and as an audiobook on Audible.
The Fed Raises Rates Let's get to it: the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points today, bringing the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4.00%. The Fed said economic activity is expanding at a solid pace, while inflation remains elevated and uncertainty remains tied in part to geopolitical developments.
David discusses why he didn't think the rate hike was necessary, arguing that much of the current inflation pressure is connected to the conflict involving Iran and higher energy prices. His view is that if the conflict ends and oil and gas prices decline, some of that inflation pressure could ease.
Despite the rate increase, the market reaction has been relatively limited so far, and David takes a closer look at what the decision could mean for investors.
What Exactly Is the Federal Funds Rate? So, what is the federal funds rate? It is the interest rate at which depository institutions lend balances to one another overnight. Changes in the federal funds rate can influence other short-term interest rates, financial conditions, and eventually broader economic activity.
David explains why this rate matters to investors, borrowers, and the overall economy—and why understanding the Fed can help you better understand the financial markets.

2026/09/03

🇨🇦 Canada–U.S. Trade Negotiations David takes a closer look at the latest developments between Canada and the United States, following Canada's decision to break off trade negotiations with the U.S.
David argues that Canada should not expect continued access to the American market without negotiating a fair trade relationship. With Canada heavily dependent on trade with the United States, the stakes are significant for both countries.
David also discusses Canada's economic performance and declining standard of living over the past decade, and why he believes the U.S. needs to stand firm in negotiations rather than allow its trading partners to take advantage of American businesses and consumers.
What does this mean for the future of U.S.-Canada trade, the Canadian economy, and American businesses? David breaks down his perspective and what he believes could happen next.
David's book, The Sin of Retirement™, is available at www.sinofretirement.com, where you can also find official merchandise, including the Lake America T-shirt and I Suck At Investing coffee mug. The book is also available on Amazon and as an audiobook on Audible.

SpaceX Takes Off, Greenspan's Legacy, and Why Long-Term Investors Win
2026/06/25
Welcome to Financial Revelations with David Szafranski!
It's been an exciting 10 days in the markets. SpaceX finally went public, generating significant excitement among investors. After an initial surge in price, the stock leveled off, reminding investors of an important principle David often emphasizes: think long term. Successful investing is built on patience, discipline, and maintaining a long-term perspective.
In other news, we remember the life and legacy of Alan Greenspan, who passed away at the age of 100. Greenspan served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve from 1987 to 2006 and played a significant role in shaping monetary policy during a period of tremendous economic growth and change. David reflects on Greenspan's reputation as a solid economist who generally favored limited intervention and avoided political entanglements.
If you would like David and the team to review your portfolio, email [email protected] for more information.
We're also continuing to support mission work throughout the Amazon. To learn more about Nativos or contribute to their efforts, please visit www.nativosusa.org. We are currently seeking partners interested in helping provide ongoing monthly fuel donations to support mission activities and outreach in remote areas of the Amazon.
