AI Isn’t the Teacher: The Human-Centered Model Behind Alpha School
2026/10/24
This episode explores Alpha School, an alternative K–12 model that uses adaptive technology for core academics and human “guides” for coaching, relationships, and life skills. Alpha’s model rests on three commitments: Students will love school. Students will achieve twice the expected annual academic growth. Students will learn practical, real-world life skills. Students spend roughly two hours each morning completing personalized, mastery-based academics through Alpha’s “TimeBack” system. The platform identifies gaps, adjusts difficulty, and tracks engaged learning time. Afternoons focus on skills such as independence, grit, teamwork, leadership, financial literacy, public speaking, emotional regulation, and giving and receiving feedback. Adults are called guides rather than teachers because their main role is not delivering academic content. They motivate students, build relationships, coach behavior and life skills, and design learning experiences. Campuses reportedly maintain approximately seven students per adult. Roles include guide assistants, guides, lead guides, and head guides, with guide salaries starting at $100,000. Traditional teaching credentials are not always required; Alpha also recruits experienced coaches, athletes, and corporate leaders. Guest Matt Shenker argues that AI is not replacing the human side of teaching. Instead, it handles parts of academic instruction that technology can personalize efficiently, freeing adults to concentrate on work that depends on human connection—socialization, motivation, emotional regulation, and personal development. Students begin with assessments tied to Common Core standards, and Alpha uses NWEA MAP testing to measure progress. According to Shenker, incoming students average approximately 2.5 grade levels behind their age-based placement. He also claims that 95–98% of Alpha students report loving school and about half would choose school over vacation. These figures are presented by Alpha’s representative and are not independently evaluated in the conversation. Parents apply to the school, and prospective students attend a shadow day for academic and life-skills assessment. Each campus also has a “Dean of Parents” who manages family communication, allowing guides to focus on students. Parents are expected to support children through difficult challenges without immediately rescuing them and to accept frequent experimentation and change. Enjoy this episode. How to Get UK Teacher Training While Teaching Overseas
2026/10/03
ITP - 161. Greg, JP, and Hannah welcome Dr. Elizabeth “Liz” Hidson from the University of Sunderland for a deep dive into teacher training, certification, and professional growth in international education. Liz explains the differences between the PGCE, iQTS, QTS, and other qualification pathways, including how educators already working overseas can earn recognized British teaching credentials without returning to the UK. She also explores Sunderland’s distance-learning MA in International Education, designed specifically around the realities of working international teachers, with coursework connecting directly to their schools, careers, and future job opportunities. The conversation expands into international school mission and vision, global and “glocal” curricula, the enormous variety of international schools, and the importance of keeping academic research connected to what is actually happening in classrooms around the world. Liz also shares how Sunderland is building an international community of educators through research, conferences, the SUNRAE Journal, and its podcast, giving teachers opportunities to share classroom research rather than letting valuable work disappear after graduation. It is an especially useful episode for current international teachers, educators considering working overseas, and anyone looking to strengthen their qualifications while continuing to teach abroad. From Teaching ESL to Admin in International Schools
2026/09/19
ITP-160 explores international teaching through the lens of LeeAnna Pekel, elementary principal at Karachi American School, who joins from a suspiciously atmospheric “murder cabin” in Ohio while repatriating for the summer. LeeAnna shares her route from teaching English in Korea to earning certification online, moving into international schools, and eventually returning to Pakistan after being headhunted for leadership. The conversation digs into why less obvious locations like Karachi can become hidden gems, especially when strong school culture, serious safety systems, generous benefits, and welcoming local communities outweigh the scary headlines people love to collect like educational trading cards. Greg, Hannah, JP, and LeeAnna also talk about certification pathways, the value of networking, the realities of hardship posts, social bubbles, onboarding, small-school flexibility, and how teachers can stand out by stepping forward with solutions instead of just pointing at problems. ITP - 153 Yolanda Reshemah joins us from California to explore the complicated, emotional, and often beautiful question of where we belong after living across cultures. Born in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, raised in England, shaped by France, and now living in the United States with a German husband and a globally minded daughter, Yolanda brings a deeply personal perspective on home, identity, relocation, culture shock, loneliness, raising TCKs, and building community after moving abroad. As the host of The Places We Call Home, Yolanda shares practical insight for international teachers, expats, parents, and globally mobile families trying to create belonging wherever life takes them. Her website: https://theplaceswecallhome.com/Her Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-places-we-call-home-podcast/id1744856570Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/placeswecallhomepod/-more information-The International Teacher Podcast is a bi-weekly discussion with experts in international education. AI in International School Hiring: A Research-Driven Interviewing Model
2026/07/11
ITP 152 - Rich Boerner, former Head of School in South Korea, Bangladesh, and Brazil, joins the International Teacher Podcast to unpack how AI is changing international school hiring, teacher interviews, and the search for true school fit. Drawing on decades of leadership experience, Rich explains why resumes, cover letters, and traditional interviews often fail to predict teacher success, especially when bias, brand-name schools, and polished “performance theater” get in the way. The conversation explores TruFit Talent, an AI-supported recruitment model using role-play simulations, competency-based assessment, and evidence-driven hiring data to help international schools find stronger candidates while giving teachers a fairer shot. From TCK life and school leadership to recruitment failures, hiring costs, candidate ghosting, and the future of teacher interviews, this conversation digs into what international educators really need: more “the right fit”, clearer expectations, and fewer expensive hiring disasters dressed up as “bad fit.” Rich’s Email: [email protected] The TruFit Talent website:  https://www.trufittalent.com/ Try it Out! https://try.trufittalent.com/ Geek out with TrueProof, which is the way they measure AI authenticity in the candidates’ application process to make sure they’re doing it ethically and fairly. The People You Meet: Travel, Burnout, and Finding Yourself Overseas
2026/07/04
ITP - 151 - Melissa Rodway is an author, traveler, and former Radio Jockey. She joins Hannah, JP, and Greg to talk about travel, storytelling, and her new book The People You Meet: Luxury, Leeches, Love and Lao-Lao. Melissa shares how a childhood year in Australia planted the travel seed, how months of moving through Southeast Asia became the foundation for her book, and why the people we meet on the road often shape us more than the places themselves. The conversation moves through Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, China, Mexico, travel fatigue, solo adventures, border-crossing panic, and the strange compulsion to write it all down before the memories get eaten by time, bad Wi-Fi, or another questionable bus ride. You can buy her first book in multiple formats on Amazon.com -more information- The International Teacher Podcast is a bi-weekly discussion with experts in international education. Finding the Right School: Special Needs and International Education
2026/06/27
ITP 150 - Christian’s story highlights both the opportunity and the complexity of international teaching. Now based in Singapore, he reflects on a career that began in North Carolina and expanded into leading international schools in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Singapore. What starts as a conversation about getting into international education quickly becomes a thoughtful look at why teaching abroad remains a hidden pathway for so many educators, even as the world of international schools continues to grow. A major focus of the conversation is learning support in international schools and the uneven reality of inclusive education abroad. Christian shares what it looks like to work in special education overseas, explaining how schools differ in their ability to support students with ADHD, autism, and other neurodiverse learning needs. The discussion also unpacks the important distinction between learning support and language support, while exploring how more schools are being pushed to adapt as student needs become more visible and more widely understood. The episode becomes especially powerful as Christian speaks about life as a single father overseas raising a son with autism. He describes adopting his son in Hong Kong, recognizing early developmental differences, and facing the difficult reality that many international schools still cannot support children with moderate to severe special needs. His work creating a resource list for families searching for more inclusive schools adds a practical and hopeful dimension to the conversation, especially for international teachers with children who may feel their options are limited. -more information- The International Teacher Podcast is a bi-weekly discussion with experts in international education.
