In Maryland's poorest ZIP code, the streets start recruiting kids as young as nine. Some are out at night searching for food, and others are raising their younger siblings in abandoned homes. U Empower of Maryland began as a food project but grew into a one-stop hub for southwest Baltimore's youth to get a meal, a job, and a second chance. From free pop-up markets to community-based education, young people gain real skills while serving their own neighbors.
