Half Truths and Big Lies
2026/09/29
The most dangerous lies aren't always completely false. Sometimes they're just true enough to believe. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores the power of half truths: incomplete stories, inherited beliefs, distorted narratives, and deeply embedded messages that can quietly shape our identity and direction. Because when you change the meaning of a story, you can change what someone believes about themselves. Mr. Black explores epistemic drift, the gradual shift in how we determine what is actually true. In a world of endless information, social media, AI, competing narratives, and tribal loyalties, it's increasingly easy to accept something because it sounds right, feels right, or has simply been repeated enough times. But this isn't only about misinformation around us. It's about the stories inside us. Our earliest experiences can create powerful beliefs about safety, belonging, failure, love, and identity. Repeated long enough, those beliefs become patterns. Patterns become paradigms. And eventually, the map we've constructed can feel indistinguishable from reality. This episode explores: Why half truths can be more convincing than obvious lies How repetition strengthens the beliefs and patterns we live from Why we need to examine what we believe instead of simply inheriting it How early experiences can shape our personal “map of reality” Why old patterns may have once protected us but now hold us back How new truth, experiences, relationships, and repeated choices can create new patterns And there are two important challenges at the center of this conversation. First: Check things out for yourself. Ask questions. Challenge assumptions. Examine the evidence. Understand why you believe what you believe. Second: Your first half doesn't have to determine your second. You may not have chosen the experiences that shaped your earliest beliefs. You may not have drawn the first map you were given. But you don't have to navigate by it forever. What was learned can be challenged. What was practiced can be changed. What was wired through repetition can begin to be rewired through truth, practice, connection, and grace. You cannot live a full life on half truths. And no matter what's already been written, you still have a second half to write. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does. The Measure of One's Life
2026/09/22
How do you measure a life? By what you accomplish? What you earn? What you own? How many people know your name? Or is there a completely different measuring stick? On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores an ancient question that every person eventually has to answer: What is the measure of my life? Drawing from Scripture and ancient Jewish wisdom, Mr. Black challenges the way we define success and examines what our choices reveal about who we are becoming. An ancient teaching attributed to Rabbi Ilai says a person can be recognized by three things: their cup, their pocket, and their anger. In other words, character becomes visible at the pressure points: The cup: Who are you when your guard is down? The pocket: What do your money, resources, and opportunities reveal about what you value? The anger: Who do you become when you're frustrated, challenged, or don't get your way? These aren't measuring sticks meant primarily for judging everyone around us. They're mirrors. Because the ultimate measure of a life isn't simply what we've accumulated. It's what we've done with what we've been given. Mr. Black is also joined by Autumn Christensen, Executive Director of Her Plan, to talk about what that looks like in action. Her Plan connects women facing unexpected pregnancies with a nationwide network of practical support, from medical care and counseling to housing, transportation, job training, material resources, and community. Their conversation provides a real-world example of a larger question at the heart of the episode: Are we living primarily for what we can get, or for what we can give? Our time. Our money. Our abilities. Our influence. Our relationships. They all become part of the answer. Because the measure of your life isn't ultimately found in your résumé, possessions, position, or applause. It's found in your character, your purpose, and the lives that are different because you were here. So when your life is weighed, what will the scales reveal? Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Spelunking Plato's Cave
2026/09/15
Why would someone choose a comfortable lie over an uncomfortable truth? Because truth can cost us something. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black ventures deeper into Plato’s Cave, exploring why human beings cling so tightly to beliefs, communities, identities, and familiar ways of seeing the world, even when they may not be true. The episode begins with the story of Truth and Lie: two brothers who enter a race, only for Lie to steal Truth’s clothes and return to town dressed as him. When the real Truth arrives naked, the people reject him because he is uncomfortable to look at. And that becomes the question at the heart of this episode: Why are we so often willing to believe a well-dressed lie rather than face a naked truth? Through Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, the biblical account of Pilate standing before Jesus, and insights into human psychology, Mr. Black explores five lessons about our relationship with truth: We avoid truth because truth demands change. We reject truth when it threatens our belonging. Truth often hurts before it heals. We fear truth because it exposes our identity. Truth ultimately requires courage, not simply intelligence. Because our beliefs don't exist in isolation. They're shaped by family, experiences, wounds, communities, culture, and our deep human desire to be accepted. Sometimes the shadows feel safer because everyone around us is looking at the same wall. But leadership requires something more. It requires the curiosity to ask difficult questions, the courage to examine what you've always believed, and the willingness to step toward the light even when doing so costs you comfort or acceptance. And once you've left the cave, leadership isn't about looking down on those still inside. You go back for them. You invite. You walk alongside. You help their eyes adjust. You create an environment where truth can be encountered with both courage and love. Because you cannot lead someone out of a cave you refuse to leave yourself. The question isn't simply, “What is truth?” The question is whether we're courageous enough to follow it when we find it. Inspiration. Education. Application. Venture Into Plato's Cave
2026/09/08
What if some of the things you are most certain about aren't actually true? We all see the world through beliefs shaped by our experiences, relationships, culture, fears, and communities. And while we may want the truth, confronting it can threaten the very things that make us feel safe. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black ventures into Plato's Allegory of the Cave to explore one of leadership's most important questions: Why do people resist the truth, even when the truth could set them free? For Plato's prisoners, shadows were reality because shadows were all they had ever known. When one prisoner finally encountered the light, it was painful and disorienting. And when he returned to share what he had discovered, the others didn't celebrate. They resisted. More than 2,000 years later, the cave remains a powerful picture of human behavior. Mr. Black connects Plato's allegory with Jesus' words, "You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free," along with insights from psychology and neuroscience to examine why truth can be so difficult to face. This episode explores: Why familiar beliefs can feel true simply because we've lived with them for so long How cognitive dissonance, fear, group identity, and past experiences influence what we're willing to believe Why belonging can sometimes become more important than accuracy How today's echo chambers can become modern versions of Plato's cave Why discomfort isn't necessarily a reason to retreat How leaders can help people confront difficult truths without shaming or forcing them Mr. Black is also joined by two recent graduates of Team 909 from Leadership Awakening, sharing what happened when they confronted truths about themselves and began experiencing freedom on the other side. Because transformational leadership isn't about standing outside the cave yelling at everyone still inside. It's about having the courage to examine your own shadows, walk toward the light, and then return for others with patience, humility, wisdom, and love. Truth can disrupt. Truth can hurt. Truth can heal. And truth can set you free. The question is whether you're willing to leave the cave. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does. Lessons from the Blacktop - Sturgis ’26
2026/09/01
Sometimes the best leadership lessons aren’t learned in a classroom, boardroom, or book. Sometimes they’re learned on the blacktop. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black takes listeners inside his experience serving at Sturgis 2026, a trip that became far more than a mission. It became a lesson in people, pain, conflict, leadership, and his own heart. Mr. Black went to Sturgis to serve a group of people he once avoided and assumed he had little in common with. What he found was a powerful reminder that underneath the differences, people are people. We carry wounds. We disappoint each other. We make mistakes. We want to belong. And we all need grace. Through stories straight from his audio journal, Mr. Black shares three major leadership lessons the blacktop taught him: The Power of Awareness – You cannot change what you cannot see, heal what you cannot name, or lead what you do not understand. The Stewardship of Power – Power doesn’t create character, it reveals what’s already there. Leadership isn’t about having authority over people; it’s about using influence to serve, protect, reconcile, and build. The Courage to Confront – Avoiding conflict doesn’t make it disappear. It gives hurt, resentment, and misunderstanding time to grow. You’ll hear the story of a simple seven-minute confrontation that turned tension into tears, humility, hugs, and reconciliation. It became a living example of what happens when a leader chooses courage over comfort. But Sturgis also became a mirror. Mr. Black gets personal about his own patterns of avoiding confrontation, the cost of allowing unresolved issues to grow, and what God revealed when he finally had the space to become aware of what was happening inside himself. Because leadership isn’t about having people figured out. It’s about continually learning people, understanding yourself, stewarding your influence, and having the courage to deal with what’s real. People will disappoint you. You will disappoint people. You will even disappoint yourself. But God is still working. These are the lessons from the blacktop. Inspiration. Education. Application. A Curious Leader
2026/08/25
What separates a leader who simply manages people from one who truly understands them? Curiosity. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black goes deeper into the People Business, exploring what happens when leaders become curious about how people are wired, how relationships shape us, and why connection can be one of the most powerful forces for change. At the center of the conversation is Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB), an interdisciplinary approach that brings together neuroscience, psychology, attachment theory, sociology, trauma research, systems theory, and more to better understand the connection between the brain, mind, and relationships. The core idea is powerful: we are shaped through relationships. Mr. Black explores the importance of attunement, the ability to genuinely see, hear, understand, and respond to another person. Great leadership isn’t simply telling people what to do. It’s creating the trust, safety, connection, and accountability that allow people to grow. This episode explores: How relationships shape the brain, beliefs, identity, and behavior Why neuroplasticity means our patterns are capable of changing How people help regulate one another through presence, empathy, and connection Why integration of emotion, logic, identity, relationships, and purpose matters The importance of becoming a safe person through presence, grace, and truth How understanding people helps leaders build healthier people, cultures, and organizations And while human behavior follows recognizable patterns, every person is still completely unique. That’s why leadership requires curiosity. You cannot assume you already know someone’s story, motivations, fears, strengths, or internal wiring. People are not problems to manage. They’re people to understand. If you want to build better organizations, stronger relationships, and healthier cultures, become curious about the people in front of you. Because we’re all in the People Business. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
The Schematics of Being Human
2026/08/18
What if the way you think, react, connect, and lead isn’t random? What if there’s a blueprint running underneath it all? On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black takes listeners inside the schematics of being human, exploring the mental and emotional programs that shape how we see ourselves, other people, and the world around us. Many of these patterns begin forming early in life. They become our internal operating system, influencing what we believe about safety, love, trust, belonging, worth, and identity. Some of those programs serve us well. Others may have helped us survive one season but continue running long after we need them. Using Schema Therapy, Mr. Black explores the traditional 5 Domains and 18 Early Maladaptive Schemas, showing how deeply rooted patterns can influence our relationships, work, self-talk, and leadership. But understanding the schematic is only the beginning. This episode breaks down five steps for changing the program: Awareness – Recognize the pattern that's running Compassion – Understand why it developed New Experiences – Create evidence that challenges the old program Repetition – Strengthen healthier responses over time Support – Surround yourself with people who reinforce growth Because the brain isn't fixed. Through neuroplasticity and new experiences, old patterns can be questioned, updated, and replaced. And that's especially important for leaders. The way you show up can reinforce another person's old programming, or it can become part of the environment that helps them build something healthier. You can look at the schematic. You can recognize the pattern. And you can begin changing the program. This is an Hour of Power about understanding yourself, understanding others, and becoming better at the business we're all in: the People Business. Inspiration. Education. Application. Transformation Begins With Change
2026/08/11
Transformation doesn’t happen by accident. It begins with a decision to change. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores the process of transformation and why every lasting change starts with a catalyst. Whether it’s a crisis, a conviction, or a calling, change is often the spark that ignites a completely new direction in life. Using the science of fire and the imagery of a smelter’s furnace, Mr. Black explains that just as fire requires oxygen, heat, fuel, and a chemical reaction, personal transformation also requires the right environment, behaviors, beliefs, and identity working together. Real growth doesn’t happen by chance—it happens through a process. This episode explores: Why transformation always begins with change How environment, behavior, identity, and beliefs work together to create lasting growth Why crisis often becomes the catalyst for breakthrough The difference between simply surviving life and stepping into your calling Why our lives are not episodic—they are architectural, built one decision at a time Mr. Black is also joined by Eric and Jason, two recent graduates of Leadership Awakening, who share their personal stories of transformation, breakthrough, and how choosing change has reshaped their lives. The question isn’t whether change is coming. The question is: What will it take? What spark will ignite your awakening? What moment will cause you to say, “Enough… it’s time.” Because the new you is waiting. And the fire has already been lit. Inspiration. Education. Application. The Road Less Traveled
2026/08/04
Sometimes the road to your calling takes far longer than you ever imagined. On this special episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black shares the powerful valedictorian address he delivered after completing a journey that took 42 years to finish—a journey marked by abuse, homelessness, military service, self-doubt, setbacks, and ultimately, God's faithfulness. Beginning with his story of being kicked out of his home at sixteen, Mr. Black reminds graduates that while everyone may arrive at the same destination, no one travels the same road. At the heart of his message is one life-changing phrase: "But God." No matter what comes before it... But I'm not smart enough. But I've failed. But my past... But my trauma... But my circumstances... "But God" changes the ending of the story. Drawing from Isaiah 6, Jeremiah 29:11, Ephesians 2:10, and Romans 8:28, Mr. Black reminds listeners that God creates His people to be effective in the very environment He knows they will face. Your struggles were never hidden from Him. Your future has never caught Him by surprise. He also shares one of his favorite illustrations from George Bernard Shaw, challenging listeners not to spend life wishing they had become someone else, but to become the person God created them to be. This isn't just a graduation speech. It's a message for anyone who's ever wondered if they're too late, too broken, or too far behind to fulfill their purpose. Because your past explains part of your story... It does not write the ending. This is an Hour of Power about perseverance, identity, purpose, and the God who has been writing your story all along. The road may have been long. But God. Inspiration. Education. Application. When you live your life like it matters… it does. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Understanding is the Front Door to the People Business
2026/07/28
Leadership begins with understanding. If you can't understand people, you can't truly influence them, develop them, or lead them. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explains why understanding is the front door of the People Business. Whether you're leading a company, raising a family, strengthening a marriage, or serving your community, your success will always be connected to your ability to understand how people think, communicate, and grow. Drawing from psychology, neuroscience, sociology, theology, and decades of leadership experience, this episode brings together powerful ideas that reveal how people are formed—and how they can be transformed. You'll discover: Why relationships drive nearly every meaningful outcome How repetition, observation, and attachment shape identity What Hebb's Law, Social Learning Theory, Mimetic Theory, and Attachment Theory teach us about human behavior Why lasting change always begins with understanding, not control Mr. Black also explores practical tools from Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Emotional Intelligence, including: The three primary communication filters: Deletion, Distortion, and Generalization The three perceptual positions that help leaders see beyond their own perspective How people process the world through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic communication styles Why changing perspective often changes the outcome Most importantly, this episode reminds us that people are more than behavior. We are body, mind, and spirit. Great leaders don't simply manage performance—they understand the whole person. They help reshape beliefs, build trust, strengthen identity, and create environments where people can flourish. Because when you understand how people are formed, you begin to understand how people can be transformed. In the Fight of Your Life
2026/07/21
Life is a battle. Not just the obvious battles we see around us, but the deeper battles that shape who we become. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores the six battles every person will face: Man vs. Nature – the unexpected storms of life Man vs. Man – conflict with others Man vs. Society – the pressure to conform Man vs. Himself – the internal war between fear and faith The Spiritual Battle – the unseen struggle between light and darkness The Battle for Identity – the greatest battle of all, because who you believe you are determines how you fight every other battle. Joining Mr. Black is Lt. Col. Phil Cochran, a retired Air Force F-16 fighter pilot, pastor, and author of Lessons Learned at the Speed of Sound. Drawing from years in the cockpit and years behind the pulpit, Lt. Col. Cochran shares how the disciplines required to fly a fighter jet reveal powerful spiritual truths about faith, courage, pressure, failure, and perseverance. LIM Radio s11e29 In the Fight of your life Outline.docx Together they discuss: Why even a one-degree drift can lead to disaster over time The importance of spiritual disciplines in staying on course Preparing for life’s battles before they arrive Why Scripture is our Critical Action Procedure when spiritual emergencies strike How proper preparation prevents poor performance Mr. Black also challenges listeners to become Powerful, Peaceful, and Present warriors—leaders who remain calm under pressure, disciplined in their actions, and fully aware of the people and opportunities God places before them. This isn’t just a conversation about aviation. It’s about leadership. It’s about faith. It’s about identity. Because the greatest battle you’ll ever fight isn’t against your circumstances. Choices That Define Our Life
2026/07/14
Your life is the sum of your choices. Not one decision. Not one moment. But the daily choices that quietly shape who you become. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black reveals the five choices that ultimately define every life. They may seem ordinary, but together they determine your direction, your influence, and your legacy.   The five choices are: How you spend your timeThe attitude you chooseWhat you focus onThe story you tell yourselfWhat you believe about God, yourself, and your purpose Drawing from neuroscience, psychology, Scripture, and leadership principles, Mr. Black explains why our minds are constantly filtering information through deletion, distortion, and generalization—and why the stories we repeat to ourselves eventually become the lives we live. This episode also explores: How your Reticular Activating System (RAS) shapes what you notice and pursueWhy beliefs at the identity level create lasting transformationThe Sovereignty Triangle found in Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:28, and Ephesians 2:10The difference between living for Survival, Success, or Significance Because success isn’t the highest goal. Significance is. It’s not about what you accumulate. It’s about who you build. It’s not about making a name for yourself. It’s about making a difference in the lives of others. This is an Hour of Power designed to help you examine the choices you’re making today—because today’s choices become tomorrow’s character, and tomorrow’s character becomes your legacy. 250 Years - Freedom to BE
2026/07/07
As America celebrates 250 years of independence, one question rises above all the celebrations: What were we set free to become? On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black reflects on the meaning of freedom, responsibility, and courage in a nation founded on the ideals of liberty. Freedom was never meant to be the absence of restraint—it was meant to be the opportunity to build strong families, raise responsible children, live with purpose, and honor God. This episode explores the growing challenges facing our nation: The decline of the family Rising loneliness, anxiety, and suicide Young adults delaying responsibility and purpose The growing disconnect from faith among younger generations Through the Law of Causality, Mr. Black reminds listeners that nothing happens by accident. Every effect has a cause, and every choice produces consequences. If we want a different future, we must be willing to examine the decisions and beliefs shaping our present. Joining the program are Joe Soltis and his son Jake, who share how they are investing in the next generation, encouraging young people to live boldly for Christ and helping reverse the trend of spiritual decline. The episode also looks at historical lessons, including the often-cited cycle of republics throughout history, and asks whether America has the courage to reclaim the values that made it strong. Because freedom without responsibility eventually becomes chaos. It takes courage to lead a family. It takes courage to keep your commitments. It takes courage to stand for truth. And it takes courage to use your freedom well. This is an Hour of Power about leadership, faith, family, and the responsibility that comes with liberty. Because the land of the free has always depended on the home of the brave. Inspiration. Its Okay to Slow Things Down
2026/06/30
n a world that never stops moving, maybe the most productive thing you can do… is slow down. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black explores why clarity is becoming one of the rarest leadership skills in our information-saturated culture. Every day, our brains are bombarded with the equivalent of 34 gigabytes of information, forcing us to filter, interpret, and respond faster than ever before.  But what if moving faster isn’t the answer? This episode examines how our minds process information through three powerful filters: Deletion – We leave important things out. Distortion – We reshape reality through our beliefs and emotions. Generalization – We turn isolated experiences into lifelong assumptions. These filters help us survive, but they can also cause us to misunderstand ourselves, others, and even God. Mr. Black also unpacks: The role of the Reticular Activating System (RAS) and how it determines what captures your attention Why most of our daily decisions happen unconsciously How culture, media, and repeated messages shape our thinking Why awareness is the first step toward transformation Joining the program is John CEniglia, President of SAT-7, sharing how Christian media is helping people in the Middle East see beyond stereotypes and discover truth through authentic conversations. The message is simple but powerful: Slow down. Think. Become aware. Because you can’t change what you don’t recognize. Leadership begins the moment you stop reacting automatically and start thinking intentionally. This is an Hour of Power about awareness, wisdom, emotional intelligence, and learning to see clearly in a world that profits from distraction. Inspiration. Education. Application. Being Human 101
2026/06/23
What does it mean to be human? In a world flooded with information, competing narratives, emotional reactions, and constant division, that question may be more important than ever. On this episode of Like It Matters Radio, Mr. Black takes listeners back to the fundamentals of human behavior, leadership, and relationships. Because before we can lead others, we need to understand ourselves. This episode explores some of the most important truths in the People Business: People are the greatest asset and greatest challenge in every organization We don't respond to reality—we respond to our map of reality Every behavior is driven by a belief system Identity shapes beliefs, beliefs shape behavior, and behavior shapes outcomes Mr. Black breaks down key principles from psychology, leadership, and emotional intelligence, including Robert Dilts' Logical Levels of Change, revealing why lasting transformation must begin at the identity level. You'll also discover: Why people often react to narratives more than facts How emotional contagion shapes culture and perception The dangers of attaching unhealthy labels to your identity Why emotional intelligence is becoming one of the most critical leadership skills of our time Joining the conversation is John CEniglia, President of SAT-7, sharing how Christians in Turkey are challenging stereotypes and changing perceptions through authentic conversations, storytelling, and faith-based media. At its core, this episode is about understanding people better: Why they think the way they do. Why they believe what they believe. Why emotions often overpower logic. And why leadership begins with winning the hearts and minds of people. Because every organization is in the people business. Every family is in the people business. Every leader is in the people business. And the better we understand what it means to be human, the better equipped we are to build healthier relationships, stronger cultures, and more meaningful lives. Inspiration. Education. Application.
