Casey picks Jan de Bont's The Haunting for the second movie in our Dead of Summer triple feature. In this episode, we meet Hugh Crain, along with Hill House itself. We trace the film's tangled path from a planned Spielberg/Stephen King collaboration (that eventually became King's Rose Red) through Jan de Bont taking the reins, and break down all 16 monster reveals hiding in Liam Neeson, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Owen Wilson, and Lili Taylor's ill-fated sleep study. We compare this haunted house movie to both the 1963 original and Mike Flanagan's Netflix series, geek out over the ILM and Tippett Studios effects work, run our Real Monsters segment, and find out once and for all whether any of us would survive a night in Hill House. We're kicking off our Dead of Summer triple feature with Poltergeist III (1988), the divisive third entry in the Poltergeist franchise where Reverend Kane follows Carol Anne to a high-rise apartment building in Chicago. In this episode we break down all 13 monster reveals, dig into the film's ambitious in-camera mirror effects, and unpack the real-life tragedy behind star Heather O'Rourke's final performance and the film's reshot ending. In this episode we cover: Director Gary Sherman and co-writer Brian Taggart's approach to the Poltergeist mythology How the practical, on-set mirror and reflection effects were actually filmed Tom Skerritt, Nancy Allen, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Zelda Rubinstein's performances The confusing family dynamics that replaced the original Freeling cast Heather O'Rourke's death, the misdiagnosis, and how the ending was reshot Comparisons to the Insidious franchise's mythology Subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and YouTube For bonus content and commentaries, check out our Patreon Follow the show on Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook Want to support the show and save 20% on Fangoria? Returning guest Don Campbell joins us as we meet Charles Lee Ray in episode 156, tackling Tom Holland's 1988 classic Child's Play as the second entry in the "It's Voodoo Baby" triple feature. We break down all eight of Chucky's major reveals, from the voodoo soul transfer that opens the film to the battery scene confrontation between Karen Barclay and the Good Guy doll, to the fiery finale in the apartment. Along the way we explore Don Mancini's original "Blood Buddy" script, the Cabbage Patch doll craze that inspired the film, the raised soundstage set and practical puppet work that brought Chucky to life, and why Catherine Hicks' performance makes Child's Play as much a story about a struggling single mother as it is a slasher. The episode closes with our favorite reveals ranking, real monsters, and a round of "would you survive Chucky?"  Next up: Wes Craven's The Serpent and the Rainbow closes out the triple feature.
