Angels: The Road is Never Empty
2026/09/30
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:  Angels, The Road is Never Empty One of the wonderful things about being part of the great traditions like Anglicanism is that we don't get hung up on Angels, and we also recognize their work among us. They are a very real part of scripture, and our daily lives. Our reading from Acts 12 is definitely a unique story and a key to helping us understand the nature of angels. This week Cn Tim shares a beautiful excerpt from Dr. Jason Swan Clark along with Tim's own thoughts about our journey through this life, which we know from scripture is that we are not alone, no matter how it may seem or feel. How do we say, "yes" to the story that is going on all around us, every day. Acts 12: When he had seized Peter, he put him in prison and handed him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending to bring him out to the people after the Passover. While Peter was kept in prison, the church prayed fervently to God for him. The very night before Herod was going to bring him out, Peter, bound with two chains, was sleeping between two soldiers, while guards in front of the door were keeping watch over the prison. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone in the cell. He tapped Peter on the side and woke him, saying, ‘Get up quickly.’ And the chains fell off his wrists. The angel said to him, ‘Fasten your belt and put on your sandals.’ He did so. Then he said to him, ‘Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.’ Peter went out and followed him; he did not realize that what was happening with the angel’s help was real; he thought he was seeing a vision. After they had passed the first and the second guard, they came before the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went outside and walked along a lane, when suddenly the angel left him. Then Peter came to himself and said, ‘Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hands of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.’ Saturday Services in Downtown Beverly, MA Join us for Saturday 4pm evening services this season in downtown Beverly, MA. Creation Tide 3: Genesis 3, The Goodness of Creation
2026/09/24
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:  Creation Tide 3: Genesis 3, The Goodness of Creation Creation Tide Season: One of the deeply Christ-like examples we find in the creation stories in Genesis and God's message for us to "care fo the Earth",  is in the word, "shamar". If you read the literal Hebrew mechanics, shamar (used in Gen 2:15) is the exact same word used in the famous priestly blessing: "The Lord bless you and keep [shamar] you." Translating it conceptually, it literally means to care for something protectively, the way a loving guardian keeps watch over someone. The Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew (Eastern Orthodox) proposed in 1989 that September 1st (the first day of the Orthodox Church year) should be observed as a day “of protection of the natural environment”. In 2016, Pope Francis declared 1 September an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation. This was expanded in Europe to be a season — Creationtide — going from September 1st until October 4th (the Feast of St Francis), and has been adopted in many churches around the world, including some in the Anglican Communion. Join us as Tim takes us through Genesis chapter 3. The story of this chapter of Genesis is where things go awry. But what if there's more to it than things going wrong? When we break that communion with God and Creation, what happens next? Historically, Protestants put the emphasis on the "fall", and the Orthodox Church puts the emphasis on the "expulsion", with all of the work we are committed to in Creation within our community and parish, how does this affect us? "Until Western Christianity recognizes that human use is not the only purpose for the Earth, then we will continue to have an ecological crisis" In this insightful sermon, Tim reminds us that "the way forward is actually a heart thing". Are we waiting for escape? or are we a people with a hope? The early church was motivated by hope. The proclamations of the earliest christians was "there is a human who has defeated death." A hope not an escape. The earliest christians proclaim the goodness of creation as an inherent part of declaring the glory of God. Tim also shares some fascinating stories from around the world of people working together in the goodness of creation. Isaiah Series 12: God our Loving Father
2026/09/03
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:  Isaiah 63, 64,- God, our Loving Father This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. In this series we see in our readings how Isaiah always contrasts empire and the messiah. We know from history going back as far as we can, and even in the scripture, that humans are regularly ordering their lives around "empire". Does God work within "Empire"? Where does God meet us? Where is God's Empire and Kingdom? This week Tim shares a fascinating look at some of the closing chapters of Isaiah. From our reading from selected verses in the book of the prophet Isaiah (chapters 63 and 64) For you are our father, you, O Lord, are our father;     our Redeemer from of old is your name. When you did awesome deeds that we did not expect,     you came down, the mountains quaked at your presence. From ages past no one has heard,     no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you,     who works for those who wait for him. You meet those who gladly do right,     those who remember you in your ways. Yet, O Lord, you are our Father;     we are the clay, and you are our potter;     we are all the work of your hand. I (the Lord) was ready to be sought out by those who did not ask,     to be found by those who did not seek me. I said, ‘Here I am, here I am’,     to a nation that did not call on my name. Psalm 104 - Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul
2026/08/27
Join us for Reverend Dr Ron Reinstra's sermon: Psalm 104 - Bless the Lord, Oh My Soul This week our special guest from A Rocha USA and a professor at Western Theological Seminary in Michigan, Ron Reinstra, shares an insightful and hopeful sermon as we begin to look towards Creation Tide. In today's reading our psalmist reflects with wonder on all of God's beautiful creation and in the end, with their heart filled with thanks proclaims: May the glory of the Lord endure for ever;     may the Lord rejoice in his works— who looks on the earth and it trembles,     who touches the mountains and they smoke. I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;     I will sing praise to my God while I have being. May my meditation be pleasing to him,     for I rejoice in the Lord. Let sinners be consumed from the earth,     and let the wicked be no more. Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord! Isaiah Series 11: Isaiah 52, 53 - The Servant King
2026/08/19
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon:  Isaiah 52, 53 - The Servant King This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week Tim shares a fascinating look at one of the most beautiful passages in all of scripture, Isaiah chapters 52 and 53. Is this the single place in the Hebrew bible that Jesus most appropriated to himself? Did Jesus understand this passage to be about him, who he was and did it inform who he was and did he fulfill what it says? Profoundly encouraging and important. From our reading in the book of the prophet Isaiah (52: 13-53: 8) See, my servant shall prosper;     he shall be exalted and lifted up,     and shall be very high. Just as there were many who were astonished at him     —so marred was his appearance, beyond human semblance,     and his form beyond that of mortals— so he shall startle many nations;     kings shall shut their mouths because of him; for that which had not been told them they shall see,     and that which they had not heard they shall contemplate. Who has believed what we have heard?     And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed? For he grew up before him like a young plant,     and like a root out of dry ground; he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,     nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. He was despised and rejected by others;     a man of suffering and acquainted with infirmity; and as one from whom others hide their faces     he was despised, and we held him of no account. Surely he has borne our infirmities     and carried our diseases; yet we accounted him stricken,     struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions,     crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the punishment that made us whole,     and by his bruises we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray;     we have all turned to our own way, and the Lord has laid on him     the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted,     yet he did not open his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter,     and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent,     so he did not open his mouth. By a perversion of justice he was taken away.     Who could have imagined his future? For he was cut off from the land of the living,     stricken for the transgression of my people. Isaiah Series 10: I am With You
2026/08/13
Join us for Bs Joshua Lickter's sermon: I am With You This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week our guest, Josh, shares some insights into our scripture readings from Isaiah 42 and 43. How can we respond when we see some who have traded the humility of the cross of Jesus for the coercive power of the state? Even in confusion, how can we find a loving way forward towards Christ our neighbor? Some of the issues of our time are complicated, and often times we as humans prefer simple answers to complex questions. Has part of the church lost it's way? How can we go forward in the way of love? In this passage from Isaiah, in the midst of the chaos and confusion, God speaks to a remnant, a word of profound tenderness. From our reading in Isaiah 43: Do not fear, for I have redeemed you;     I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;     and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,     and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God,     the Holy One of Israel, your Saviour. Do not fear, for I am with you;     I will bring your offspring from the east,     and from the west I will gather you; Josh reminds us that Jesus invites us to his table. Through the eucharist we are invited to feast on the life, the humility, the sacrifice, and the boundless love of Jesus Christ. The ultimate litmus test of any movement that claims the name of Jesus, is do they contain the very fruit of the Spirit of God; love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness, faithfulness, goodness, self control. These are the fruits that we seek for God to bring about in our own lives. Isaiah Series 9: The Promise
2026/08/06
Join us for Mother Jen Keifer's sermon: The Promise This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. In this impactful sermon, Jen offers us 3 insights into this promise: Jesus is with us on the road we do not know. The promise of God is that God goes with us, and nourishes us in every chapter of our lives, even when we feel the most vulnerable.  From our reading in Isaiah 42 I will lead the blind     by a road they do not know; by paths they have not known     I will guide them. I will turn the darkness before them into light,     the rough places into level ground. These are the things I will do,     and I will not forsake them. and from the Gospel of John chapter 6: Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty. Isaiah Series 8: A Bruised Reed He Will Not Break
2026/07/30
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: A Bruised Reed He Will Not Break This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. Isaiah always contrasts empire against the messiah. We know from history going back as far as we can, and even in the scripture, that humans are regularly ordering their lives around "empire". Does God work within "Empire"? Where does God meet us? Where is God's Empire and Kingdom? This week, Tim reminds us that God meets us even in the places where we may have given up hope. From our reading in Isaiah 41: a bruised reed he will not break,     and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;     he will faithfully bring forth justice. He will not grow faint or be crushed     until he has established justice in the earth;     and the coastlands wait for his teaching. Isaiah Series 7: Don't be Afraid, I Hold Your Right Hand
2026/07/23
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: Don't be Afraid, I Hold Your Right Hand This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week Tim look's at Isaiah 41: 11-20  In today's reading, Isaiah shares.. Yes, all who are incensed against you     shall be ashamed and disgraced; those who strive against you     shall be as nothing and shall perish. You shall seek those who contend with you,     but you shall not find them; those who war against you     shall be as nothing at all. For I, the Lord your God,     hold your right hand; it is I who say to you, ‘Do not fear,     I will help you.’ Do not fear, you worm Jacob,     you insect Israel! I will help you, says the Lord;     your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel. Now, I will make of you a threshing-sledge,     sharp, new, and having teeth; you shall thresh the mountains and crush them,     and you shall make the hills like chaff. You shall winnow them and the wind shall carry them away,     and the tempest shall scatter them. Then you shall rejoice in the Lord;     in the Holy One of Israel you shall glory. When the poor and needy seek water,     and there is none,     and their tongue is parched with thirst, I the Lord will answer them,     I the God of Israel will not forsake them. I will open rivers on the bare heights,     and fountains in the midst of the valleys; I will make the wilderness a pool of water,     and the dry land springs of water. I will put in the wilderness the cedar,     the acacia, the myrtle, and the olive; I will set in the desert the cypress,     the plane and the pine together, so that all may see and know,     all may consider and understand, that the hand of the Lord has done this,     the Holy One of Israel has created it. This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week Jen look's at Isaiah 41: 1-10  In today's reading, Isaiah shares.. Each one helps the other,     saying to one another, ‘Take courage!’ The artisan encourages the goldsmith,     and the one who smooths with the hammer encourages the one who strikes the anvil, saying of the soldering, ‘It is good’;     and they fasten it with nails so that it cannot be moved. But you, Israel, my servant,     Jacob, whom I have chosen,     the offspring of Abraham, my friend; you whom I took from the ends of the earth,     and called from its farthest corners, saying to you, ‘You are my servant,     I have chosen you and not cast you off’; do not fear, for I am with you,     do not be afraid, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you,     I will uphold you with my victorious right hand. This week Tim look's at Isaiah 40: 21-31  In today's reading, Isaiah reminds us... The Lord is the everlasting God,     the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary;     his understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the faint,     and strengthens the powerless. Even youths will faint and be weary,     and the young will fall exhausted; but those who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength,     they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary,     they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah Series 4: Beauty, Wonder, Gratitude
2026/07/02
Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: Beauty, Wonder, Gratitude This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week Tim look's at Isaiah 40: 12-26  In today's reading, Isaiah marvels at the beauty and wonder that God has made. One of the early church saints, Maximus, tells that because God's handiwork is the whole creation (including all of humanity), God is implicitly wrapped up with it. Gratitude chases fear away. Have you not known? Have you not heard?     Has it not been told you from the beginning?     Have you not understood from the foundations of the earth? It is he who sits above the circle of the earth,     and its inhabitants are like grasshoppers; who stretches out the heavens like a curtain,     and spreads them like a tent to live in; who brings princes to naught,     and makes the rulers of the earth as nothing. Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown,     scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows upon them, and they wither,     and the tempest carries them off like stubble. To whom then will you compare me,     or who is my equal? says the Holy One. Lift up your eyes on high and see:     Who created these? He who brings out their host and numbers them,     calling them all by name; because he is great in strength,     mighty in power,     not one is missing. Join us for Cn Tim Clayton's sermon: Good Tidings This summer we look at the courage and encouraging words that God shares with us from the Prophet Isaiah when things look really rough. This week Tim look's at Isaiah 40: 9-11 and the good tidings that God is reminding His people of. Do not be afraid, God's arm rules, He will feed His flock, God will gather, God will carry, God will gently lead us. Get you up to a high mountain,     O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength,     O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings,     lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah,     ‘Here is your God!’ Behold! The Lord God comes with might,     and his arm rules for him; his reward is with him,     and his recompense before him. He will feed his flock like a shepherd;     he will gather the lambs in his arms, and carry them in his bosom,     and gently lead those who have young.
