When Eamonn Walker Became Howlin’ Wolf ( 9.23.2026)
2026/09/23
Story by: Gail Nobles Song: Eamonn Walker: Howlin Wolf Song written by: Gail Nobles © 2026 Background music and vocals: AI Assitance 2nd Piano played by: Keyboardist Gail Nobles Voice actor at the end: Gail Nobles Podcast Cover by: Gail Nobles Welcome back to the show. Today, we need to talk about a performance that doesn't get standard awards season hype, but absolutely shatters the screen every single time you watch it. I’m talking about Eamonn Walker playing the blues legend Howlin' Wolf in the 2008 movie Cadillac Records. Let’s be honest. When you share a cast with Beyoncé and Jeffrey Wright, it’s hard to steal the spotlight. But Eamonn Walker didn't just take the spotlight—he dominated it. He was pure power. And I mean that literally. He played a tough, immovable man. His character was so unbelievably strong because he played it as if he were the boss of every single room he walked into. Because in reality, Howlin' Wolf was the boss. But what I love most is the sheer physicality Walker brought to the role. There is a specific scene in the recording studio where he is tracking a song. And I want you to go back and watch his face. The way he looked at people... his eyes were literally like a wolf. Now, I'm not saying that to make fun of him or tease the performance. It is the highest praise possible. He tapped into something primal. He locked eyes with people behind the studio glass with this fierce, steady, hunting-dog gaze. He played it as if he truly was that wolf—patient, commanding, and absolutely dangerous if you crossed him. But here is the craziest part that blows my mind: he wasn't lip-syncing. Before this movie, Eamonn Walker had never sung professionally in his life. But he refused to fake it. He trained his throat to mimic that heavy, gritty Mississippi growl safely, and that is his actual singing voice you hear on the tracks. Think about that combination. You are looking into those terrifying, unblinking wolf eyes, and at the exact same time, you are hearing this man belt out a raw, gravelly blues roar using his own voice. He didn't just act like a legend; he commanded the screen and the microphone like one. Now, I want to hear from you. What was your absolute favorite scene of Eamonn Walker in Cadillac Records? Was it his intense look behind the studio glass, or his raw energy up on the stage? Head over to the comments or social media and let me know.Until next time,, leave a review, and sound off in the comments. Bye for now! Thank you for listening to Podcast and Blues. Latimore’s ‘Slow Down’ Still Hit Potential 8.24.’26-8.10 PM
2026/08/25
Story by: Gail Nobles Photo: Lioneldecoster - Own Usage: Wikipedia CC BY 3. Latimore’s “Slow Down (But Don’t Stop)” is an R&B and soul recording released in 1988 as the title track and opening song of his Slow Down album on Malaco Records. Written by Jimmy Lewis, the song features Latimore’s deep, smooth vocals over a classic late-1980s soul-blues arrangement. The song was not a major national Billboard hit, but that does not take away from its musical appeal. “Slow Down (But Don’t Stop)” has the kind of soulful message and groove that can still connect with listeners today. I don’t know why the song wasn’t a bigger hit when it was released. In my opinion, it could become a big hit today if another artist recorded it as a cover. Sometimes a great song simply needs another voice, another generation, or a new musical setting to give it another opportunity. Latimore’s recording remains a reminder that not every good song becomes a major chart hit—and some songs may still have another chapter waiting to be written. I'm Gail Nobles. In the world of blues music, few songs resonate as deeply as Buddy Guy's "Feels Like Rain." Originally released as part of his Grammy-winning album in 1993, this track has become one of Guy's most iconic songs. But the journey of "Feels Like Rain" started before Buddy Guy made it famous. The song was originally written and performed by John Hiatt in 1988. Keyboardist : Gail Nobles Vocals: Gail Nobles Story by: Gail Nobles In 1965, Little Milton, an emerging star in the rhythm and blues scene, released “We’re Gonna Make It,” a powerful single that would become a defining moment in his career. Written by Gene Barge, Billy Davis, Raynard Miner, and Carl William Smith, this soulful track not only showcased Milton's heartfelt vocals but also resonated with the spirit of the time. The song quickly climbed the charts, achieving a significant milestone as Little Milton's only Top 40 entry. It spent an impressive three weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B chart, highlighting its widespread appeal and lasting impact. Lyrically, “We’re Gonna Make It” goes beyond just a catchy tune. It serves as a metaphor for the civil rights movement, reflecting the hopes and struggles of a generation seeking equality and justice. The message of perseverance and hope found in the lyrics connected deeply with listeners during a tumultuous era in American history. As a standout achievement in Little Milton's career, “We’re Gonna Make It” remains an unforgettable classic in the R&B genre, capturing both the artistry of its time and the enduring message of resilience. Albert Collins - I Ain’t Drunk 12:16:25 6.09 PM
2025/12/16
Story by: Gail Nobles Intro by: Gail Nobles Photo: Masahiro Sumori - Own work Usage: Wikipedia  CC BY-SA 3.0 In a lively, and I mean lively 1986 album called "Cold Snap," blues legend Albert Collins released the song "I Ain’t Drunk." This track is a fun and engaging piece where Collins shares a personal story through his unique style of speaking and singing. In the song, Collins responds to background singers who tease him, saying, “But you’re so high!” His confident reply is, “I ain’t drunk,” repeated several times. The music perfectly supports Collins's storytelling, allowing him to weave in and out of singing and talking. This mixture of dialogue and catchy tunes creates a memorable experience, showcasing Collins’s talent and charisma. "I Ain’t Drunk" stands out as a highlight on "Cold Snap," illustrating not just the blues but also the art of storytelling in music. Albert Collins' storytelling captivated my attention, making me eager to hear what he would say next. Each time he spoke, I found myself anticipating the next part of the story. Story: B57 Blues Melodies in the Sky Story by: Gail Nobles © 2025 Cover Illus. By Gail Nobles Missles: Pixabay.com Willie and Rosco helped many independent blues artists gain recognition. They received numerous requests to play their records on the radio. They stored records in Rosco’s old shed for sale and traveled from county to county, promoting and performing shows. They even owned their own airplane, which had "Blues 57” written on it. After some time, their airplane was spotted by someone. A man named Freddie approached Willie and Rosco, asking them to construct planes for him. He had purchased an old building with plans to convert it into an aircraft factory. Although other workers were present, Willie and Rosco took charge due to their superior knowledge and expertise. The airplanes they built were unmatched, far outclassing any others in the world. They showcased their creations at air shows, attracting many spectators eager to see the remarkable planes. As Willie and Rosco’s success grew, they became targets. A man from Russia sought to provoke conflict with them. One day, while testing their planes, the Russian man attempted to challenge them in the sky, launching missiles in their direction. Willie yelled: Hey! What’s happening! Who’s that shooting at us! Rosco: Man I don’t know! But he’s got to go! Tune in again next time for more Blues 57. Story by Gail Nobles © 2025 Blues Music

Thornetta Davis 5:28:25 8.19 PM
2025/05/29
Photo: David Carrol https://flic.kr/p/oi7VFt Usage: CC BY-SA 2.0 Intro: Gail Nobles Story by: Gail Nobles I wanna tell ya about a blues lady who's got the blues in her bones and the soul in her voice. Her name's Thornetta Davis, and she's a Detroit blues and rhythm and blues singer. This ain't no fly-by-night singer, see? This woman's paid her dues in the Motor City and beyond. She's opened for legends like Bonnie Raitt, Gladys Knight, and the queen herself, Etta James! Yeah, she's been rollin' with the best! She even laid down some backing vocals for Bob Seger, you dig?  She's worked with everybody from that Kid Rock fella to the late, great Alberta Adams. And Davis ain't just a sideman, she's a star in her own right! Three solo albums under her belt, and the trophies?  Forget about it! The Detroit Music Awards love this lady!  Outstanding Blues Artist, Outstanding Blues/R&B Vocalist...she's swept the joint multiple times. She's a winner - I tell you! And then she moved up to National Awards. She was nominated for a Blues Music Award in 2017 for her 'Honest Woman' album, and in 2023, she took home the Blues Music Award for 'Soul Blues Female Artist of the Year'! Now, let me tell ya about one of her tracks off that "Honest Woman" album, a song called "Am I Just a Shadow." This ain't just some bubblegum pop tune, kiddies. This is raw emotion, poured straight from the heart. The lyrics, they hit you right in the gut: "You take me in, keep me from the rest, you lock me away inside your walls of indecision..." She's singin' about a cat who's got her trapped, see?  He ain't sure about her, keeps her on a short leash. "I don't know why you feel the need, to cut my heart and watch it bleed. Is that your way to make me pay for her deceptions?" This cat's carryin' baggage from some past woman, and he's makin' Thornetta pay for it. He's playin' head games. It ain't right! Then comes the chorus, and it's a killer: "Do you really know me? Or, am I just a shadow? (Just a shadow) Of someone who reminds you of that someone not to love (Not to love)" The lyrics are askin' the big question - Does this guy even see her for who she is? Or is she just a reminder of some old flame, some old heartache? This is the real deal when it comes to love! It's raw, it's honest, and it's the kind of soul-stirring stuff that'll make you wanna light a cigarette and stare into the darkness. Thornetta Davis, man, she's keepin' the blues alive. Check her out - you won't regret it! She's a true queen of the blues, puttin' her heart and soul into every note!  That's all I got for ya, folks! Keep the faith and keep on rockin'! I'm Gail Nobles.
