For the final episode of the short podcast series about work/life balance in the Institute and academia in general, Miriam and Lydia have a chat with principal investigators from our institute, Dr Eirini Kaiserli, Prof John Christie, Prof Helen Walden, Dr Matt Jones, Dr Thimo Kurz and Chief Technician Mr Paul Paterson. They discuss their personal approach for time and expectation management and establishing that work/life balance isn’t one-size-fits-all. They also talk about the importance in research of stepping back to think creatively, as well as being an empathetic leader when managing a group.

Professor Cogdell has served as Chair of Botany, Director of the Glasgow Biomedical Research Center, Director of the Institute of Molecular, Cell and Systems Biology and Deputy Head of College of Medical and Veterinary and Life Sciences. He has won multiple awards and is the author of more than 250 publications in various journals.

Sarah Hesse is a PhD student from our Institute, supervised by Prof Andrew Tobin and Dr Sophie Bradley. Her research, funded by the MVLS Doctoral Training Programme, aims to assess the impact of pharmacologically targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. In this podcast, Miriam discusses with Sarah her research, a mouse model for Alzheimer's disease and various research techniques.  As a new mum coming back from maternity (during the pandemic!), Sarah talks about the University's support for PhD students in maternity as well as work/life balance with a baby and PhD studies.
