Before You Reinvent Yourself, Audit Yourself
2026/10/13
There comes a point in many careers... when you start wondering: "Do I need to reinvent myself?" Maybe the industry is changing. Technology is moving quickly. You feel overlooked. Or perhaps... what used to work... isn't working anymore. So the temptation is to start again. New qualification. New identity. New direction. New everything. Sometimes... reinvention is necessary. But before you reinvent yourself... audit yourself. Because after ten... twenty... maybe thirty years of working... you have accumulated something. Not just experience. Judgement. Relationships. Pattern recognition. Problems you've learned to solve. Mistakes you no longer need to make. Situations you can read... that a less experienced person may not even notice. I see this with experienced professionals. They can become so familiar with what they know... that they stop recognising its value. So they look at what is new... and compare it with what feels ordinary in themselves. That's a dangerous comparison. Because you can accidentally abandon... your accumulated advantage. So before asking: "What do I need to become?" ask: "What have I already become... that I haven't fully recognised?" What have twenty years taught me? What can I see now... that I couldn't see ten years ago? What problems am I unusually equipped to solve? Then ask: Where does that value matter now? You may still need to change. You may need to learn. You may even need to reinvent. But don't throw away accumulated advantage... just because it has become familiar to you. Audit first. Then reposition. Then build. This is Martins Toluhi. And this is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Instead, pause and ask yourself one honest question: How am I showing up and what needs to shift? Let me know what you think in the comment session. Enjoy
The Cost of Solving the Wrong Problem
2026/09/27
One of the most expensive mistakes you can make... is solving the wrong problem... really well. Think about that. You can work hard. Build a plan. Hire good people. Spend money. Execute brilliantly. And still end up... somewhere you shouldn't be. Because execution cannot rescue... a faulty diagnosis. I see versions of this with people and organisations. A professional thinks: "I need another qualification." But perhaps capability isn't the real problem. Positioning is. A business thinks: "We need more marketing." But perhaps visibility isn't the problem. The offer no longer fits what the market values. An organisation launches another transformation programme. New systems. New structures. More investment. But what if the underlying problem... has been misread? This is where opportunity cost matters. Because every pound... every hour... every year... every strategic decision... committed to the wrong problem... cannot be invested somewhere else. And that cost is often invisible. We see what we spent. We don't always see... what we could have built instead. That's why Orientation should come before acceleration. Before asking: "How do we solve this?" ask: "Are we solving the right problem?" Look at the evidence. Challenge the assumptions. Read the terrain. Locate the real constraint. Then move. Because sometimes... the greatest saving isn't doing something more efficiently. It's discovering... that you shouldn't have been doing it at all. Before you allocate more... orient. Stop calling every difficult season a setback
2026/09/20
Not every difficult season is a setback. Sometimes difficulty is information. When progress slows, opportunities disappear or something that once worked no longer seems to work, our instinct is often to conclude that something has gone wrong. But repeated resistance may be telling us something about our fit, timing, terrain, capability or position. In this episode of Orientation Notes™, Martins Toluhi explores a simple principle: before you label the season, read the season. The objective is not to romanticise difficulty or assume every obstacle should be overcome. Sometimes the right response is to persevere. Sometimes it is to adjust. And sometimes it is to stop. Orientation is learning to examine the evidence well enough to tell the difference. If you are at an inflection point and trying to understand what your current season may be telling you, begin with the Orientation Diagnostic™ and use it to examine your present position before deciding your next move. Read the season. Then move. Enjoy
Your Life Is Producing Data
2026/09/18
Your life is producing data. Every day. The question is... are you reading it? Think about the last few years of your life. The opportunities that keep finding you. The problems people repeatedly ask you to solve. The work that seems to bring out your best. And the situations... where you keep getting stuck. We often treat these as separate events. I don't think they always are. Sometimes... they are clues. And when the same kind of clue keeps appearing... pay attention. Because clues repeated over time... can reveal a pattern. I have been seeing this in my work with people. Someone comes in believing they need something new. A new direction. A new capability. Perhaps even a completely new beginning. But when we slow down... and examine their actual history... something interesting happens. We begin to see evidence. Capabilities they have repeatedly demonstrated. Problems they consistently solve. Environments where they perform unusually well. Value that has been there... sometimes for years... but has never been properly recognised. The answer wasn't hiding somewhere in the future. Some of the evidence... was already sitting in their life. That is an important Orientation principle: Events are clues. Repeated clues become patterns. And patterns... can become decision intelligence. So here's something you can do. Take one sheet of paper. Look back over the last five years. And ask: What keeps happening? What keeps working? What keeps finding me? What keeps frustrating me? Don't judge it. Just observe. Because your past is not only something that happened to you. It may also contain intelligence... for what you should do next. Learn to read the clues. When value compounds over time
2026/09/13
At certain points in life and business, we sense that something significant is ahead, and the instinct is often to reinvent ourselves completely. But before you discard the past, examine it. Your history may contain intellectual capital, career capital, relationships, hard-earned judgement and patterns of evidence that can become intelligence for what comes next. Perhaps the question is not simply, “What should I become next?” but, “What has my life already been showing me?” Let’s reconstruct the clues, examine the patterns and see what they reveal. Shall we? #OrientationMastery #OrientationNotes #StrategicOrientation Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. Before You Accelerate, Orient
2026/08/17
We live in a world obsessed with speed. Move fast. Scale fast. Act fast. But speed without orientation is dangerous. Because acceleration magnifies direction. If your direction is right, speed helps. If your direction is wrong, speed becomes costly. That is why I say: Before you accelerate, orient. Pause. Observe. Assess. Ask: Where am I really? What terrain am I standing on? What has changed? Where is my real advantage? These questions may feel slow. But they save time. Because correct orientation reduces wasted effort. And in this season of rapid change, one of the greatest disciplines you can build is not productivity. It is orientation. Because when orientation is correct, advantage becomes clear. And when advantage becomes clear, value begins to multiply. This is Martins Toluhi. This is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. Energy Leakage Is an Early Warning Signal Before misalignment shows up in results— it often shows up in energy. This is important. Pay attention to what consistently drains you. Pay attention to what always feels forced. Pay attention to the spaces where your confidence shrinks. These are not random feelings. They are orientation signals. Many leaders ignore them because they are still performing. But performance can hide misalignment for a long time. Until it can’t. And then burnout comes. Exhaustion comes. Disengagement comes. Not because the person is weak. But because they have been operating against their natural advantage for too long. One of the most strategic things you can do is track your energy honestly. Because energy leakage is often an early warning system. It tells you where something is off before results expose it. And wise people pay attention early. Because prevention is cheaper than recovery. This is Martins Toluhi. This is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Emotional Distortion Changes the Terrain
2026/08/05
Emotional Distortion Changes the Terrain Here is something many leaders miss. The terrain is not always the problem. Sometimes your perception of the terrain is. Fear distorts reality. Shame distorts reality. Urgency distorts reality. Comparison distorts reality. And when your perception is distorted, your decisions become distorted too. That’s dangerous. Because decisions made from emotional fog often create structural consequences. I have seen again and again how brilliant professionals make poor decisions not necessarily for lacked intelligence, Often times it is due to lack of emotional clarity. It is the reason we pay close attention to emotional distortion in Orientation Mastery. Because if the lens is distorted, the reading of the map will be inaccurate. And if the reading of the map is inaccurate, movement becomes dangerous. So before making major decisions, ask yourself: What emotion is influencing how I’m reading this? That question alone can save you years. This is why I say clarity is not just intellectual. It does have emotional implications. And emotional accuracy improves terrain accuracy. This is Martins Toluhi. This is Orientation Notes™. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. Misalignment Is Expensive
2026/08/02
Misalignment Is Expensive Most people underestimate the cost of misalignment. They think the cost is frustration. In reality, It’s much bigger than that. Misalignment costs years. It costs opportunities. It costs confidence. It costs momentum. And perhaps the greatest cost is this: Effort without return. That painful experience of giving so much and seeing so little. Not because you lack value. But because your value is not properly positioned. This happens often with professionals. Highly capable. Highly intelligent. Deeply committed. But still stuck. Why? Because capability without correct orientation creates waste. And here’s the danger. When results don’t come, most people increase effort. But if the position is wrong, more effort only increases the loss. That’s why in Orientation work, one of the first things we do is assess: Where are you really standing? Because sometimes the solution is not more work. It is repositioning. And repositioning can recover years. Remember this: A wrong position can make the right person look ineffective. That’s why orientation matters. Behaviour Leaves Clues
2026/07/08
One of the greatest truths in personal and professional growth is this: Behaviour leaves clues. Not intention. Not aspiration. Behaviour. People often tell me what they want. They want growth. They want change. They want more impact. But when you examine their patterns, their life tells another story. Because behaviour is often more honest than language. Your repeated actions reveal your true orientation. If your days are filled with distraction, that tells us something. If your energy is consumed by low-value work, that tells us something. If you keep postponing the thing you say matters most, that tells us something. And this matters because many people are trying to solve performance problems— when the real issue is orientation. In Orientation Mastery™, we do not just ask: “What do you want?” We ask: “What do your patterns reveal?” Because patterns expose positioning. And positioning determines outcomes. This is especially important for leaders. Because leaders can become highly efficient at sustaining misalignment. That’s dangerous. Because the better you get at doing the wrong thing, the harder it becomes to notice it. So, here’s the question: What are your behaviours trying to tell you? Because buried in your patterns are clues about your current position. And until you read them correctly, you may keep repeating what should have been interrupted. The Life You Are Living Is Leaving Clues
2026/07/05
There’s something I’ve come to understand over the years. Most people think the biggest problem in life is lack of opportunity. It isn’t. The biggest problem is misreading your position. Because before strategy, before execution, before ambition there is orientation. And orientation is simply this: Knowing where you really are. Here’s the truth. The life you are currently living is leaving clues. Your calendar is leaving clues. Your bank account is leaving clues. Your energy is leaving clues. Your frustrations are leaving clues. The question is: Are you paying attention? Because your life structure often tells the truth long before your words do. You may say you want growth. But does your routine reflect growth? You may say you want reinvention. But is your energy positioned for reinvention? You may say you want more impact. But are you standing in the right terrain for your value to multiply? This is where many professionals get stuck. Not because they lack skill. But because they have not stopped to ask: What does my current life reveal about my actual orientation? And until you answer that honestly, you may keep working hard in the wrong direction. And here’s what I’ve learned: Effort does not correct misalignment.  It amplifies it. Before you accelerate, pause. Observe. Read the clues. Because the life you are living may be trying to tell you something. And if you listen carefully, it may show you not just where you are— but where you need to realign. The Sensible Trap
2026/06/14
The most capable people I work with don't lose their best opportunities to failure. They lose them to a single quiet question. "Is this sensible?" It sounds like wisdom. It feels like diligence. It is, in fact, the most expensive question a capable professional can ask, because of when they ask it. They ask it of every genuinely new possibility. And here's the problem: a genuinely new possibility never looks sensible yet. There's no track record for it. No proof. No tidy precedent. By definition, the thing that would actually change your trajectory hasn't happened yet, so it can't show you the evidence that would make it feel safe. So the filter does its quiet work. The opportunity gets examined, found "not sensible right now," and set down. Not rejected dramatically. Just… not picked up. And the professional tells themselves they made a measured decision. What actually happened is that a backward-looking test was applied to a forward-looking question. I see this most often in the most analytically gifted people — because the sharper your mind, the faster it generates reasons something won't work. That capability is a genuine asset when you're assessing risk for someone else. Pointed at your own future, unmanaged, it becomes a brake you mistake for brakes being wise. Here is the shift that changes it. Stop asking "Is it sensible?" Start asking "Is it possible?" This isn't a lowering of standards. It's a redirection of the same formidable machinery, from prosecuting the idea to engineering the route. "Sensible" measures a possibility against the past. "Possible" asks only whether a path exists. One closes the door. The other starts looking for the handle. The opportunities you've quietly set down over the years weren't beyond your ability. They just never made it past a question that was never designed to let new things through. So the next time you feel yourself reaching for "is this sensible?"  pause. Ask the other question instead. And watch what your mind does when you point it at building the route, rather than guarding the door. https://tinyurl.com/orientation-diagnostic Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. "The Wrong Wall" Introducing the Misalignment Economy
2026/05/17
Stephen Covey said something that has stayed with me for years. He said you can spend your entire career climbing a ladder — Working hard. Getting better. Moving up. And only at the top discover that the ladder was leaning against the wrong wall. I want to talk to you today about the professional version of that moment. Because here is what I am seeing, working with professionals across multiple sectors and multiple countries. The most capable people in their fields — The most experienced. The most credentialed. The most consequential. Are consistently the most undervalued. Not because they lack talent. Not because they lack commitment. Not because the market does not need what they offer. But because there is a structural break — A gap — Between what they actually carry And how the market currently sees them. I call this the Misalignment Economy. And it is not a niche problem. It is not something that happens to unlucky professionals or people who made poor career choices. It is a systemic, global, cross-sector market failure. Operating right now. In your industry. Possibly in your career. Here is what makes it so costly. The Misalignment Economy does not announce itself. It does not send you a letter saying your positioning is wrong. It operates through a series of signals that are so normalised we stop questioning them. Clients who engage you below your actual value — and you accept it. Conversations where you spend twenty minutes explaining what you do — and still leave feeling misunderstood. Engagements you take because they are available — not because they reflect what you are actually worth. Competitors with less experience and shallower knowledge who are somehow charging more and being taken more seriously. If any of that sounds familiar — this series is for you. Because what I have discovered, working inside this problem with professionals who are genuinely exceptional at what they do — Is that the gap between where they are and where they should be Is never a capability gap. It is always an orientation gap. And orientation gaps have a specific diagnostic. They have a specific reset. And they have a specific path to what I call the Advantaged state — The position where the market sees you the way you actually are. Over the next four videos I am going to walk you through exactly what that means. What the four patterns of misalignment look like in practice. What the reset requires. And what becomes possible when the gap closes. But first — I want to invite you to do something before you watch the next video. There is a diagnostic tool in the link below this post. It takes less than ten minutes. It will show you, with a precision that may surprise you, Exactly where you currently sit on the spectrum from misaligned to advantaged. It will name the specific pattern that is holding you at your current position. And it will give you the beginning of a language for something you may have been feeling for years But have not previously been able to articulate. One of the first people who took this diagnostic described it as — And I am using her exact words here — "A moment of clarity." Not a moment of motivation. Not a moment of inspiration. A moment of clarity. Which is exactly what it is designed to produce. Because you do not need more inspiration. You do not need another framework for working harder. You need to see, with absolute precision, Where your ladder is currently leaning. And whether it is on the right wall. Take the diagnostic. Link is below. And I will see you in Video Two. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity. Value Compression: The Silent Career Killer No One Names
2026/05/12
Subtitle: Why senior professionals quietly under-earn by six and seven figures — and what reorientation actually requires. There is a specific kind of professional pain that has no name in the leadership literature. It is not burnout. It is not imposter syndrome. It is not the mid-career plateau that every coach on LinkedIn promises to solve in ninety days. It is the slow, compounding ache of knowing — at the level of your bones — that you are worth more than the market is currently paying you, trusting you with, or positioning you for. And not knowing why. I call this value compression. It is the gap between the capability you have built and the value the market is currently extracting from you. It is the tax you pay for being legible only to the people who already know you. It is the reason senior professionals with twenty years of demonstrable excellence find themselves bracketed alongside peers who have done a fraction of the work but built twice the positioning. And it is, in my experience working with senior leaders across financial services, infrastructure, and enterprise transformation, the single most under-diagnosed condition in professional life. The four pressures that compress value Value compression does not arrive in a single event. It accumulates through four pressure points, each one quietly narrowing the band of what the market is willing to pay you for. The first is commoditised skill framing. You describe what you do using language the market has heard ten thousand times. "Programme management." "Transformation leadership." "Strategic delivery." These phrases are accurate. They are also indistinguishable from the next two hundred CVs in the pile. When your capability is described in commodity language, it gets priced in commodity ranges, regardless of what you actually deliver. The second is generalist drift. Over a long career, you have solved many problems for many people. This breadth is real. But the market does not pay premium for breadth — it pays premium for referenced specificity. Generalist drift is what happens when your range starts working against you, because no specific buyer can locate you on their map of trusted experts in their exact problem. The third is proximity to budget decisions. Some professionals operate close to where money is decided. Others operate close to where money is spent. The compression happens when your work creates outsized value but you are structurally positioned downstream of the conversations that price it. You are not in the room where your worth is set. The fourth is absent narrative. Your work has produced outcomes. Those outcomes have a story. But if you have not authored that story — clearly, repeatedly, in your own voice, in places the market can find it — then someone else's framing of your value will fill the vacuum. Usually a framing that compresses you. Reinvention does not begin with what you do.  It begins with the state from which you do it. People do not primarily act their way into a new life. They enact the future permitted by their dominant state. As you go into the rest of your year, resist the urge to rush into more activity.
