Your Brain Wants Safety. Your Business Needs Risk.
2026/09/30
Your biggest business problem might not be your plan. It might be the part of your brain trying to keep you safe. You know what needs to get done. Make the call. Check the numbers. Delegate the work. Take the risk. So why don't you do it? Stephen Baker joins Matt and Luigi to talk about the subconscious habits that can quietly run the show for entrepreneurs. Stephen is a former lawyer, professional poker player, and now a performance coach who uses hypnotherapy to help clients change the mental patterns that can hold them back. This one gets into fear, procrastination, pressure, money, losing, anger, and why being good at business sometimes means getting better at being uncomfortable.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why smart business owners still procrastinate How fear can make you the bottleneck in your own company Why your brain would rather feel safe than take the bigger shot How Stephen uses hypnotherapy in performance coaching What professional poker taught him about losing Why pressure can actually help you perform How childhood and past money stress can shape business decisions Why trying to kill your emotions may be the wrong move How anger and anxiety can be used as fuel Why the best performers learn how to "suffer well" The mental skill that separates good from great   👤 About our Guest: Stephen Baker is a performance coach and founder of Stephen Baker Performance Coaching / YouGrow. Before coaching, he worked in law and professional poker—two careers that taught him a lot about risk, pressure, decision-making, and keeping your head when things don't go your way.   🎧 Why Listen: If you've ever known exactly what you should do in your business…and still didn't do it, this episode is for you.   🔗 Links + Stuff LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/stephenbakerperformancecoach/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stephenbakerperformancecoach/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/StephenBaker2107       🔔 Enjoyed the episode? Why Healthcare Rewards the Wrong Things.
2026/09/23
What if healthcare made more money when you got better…not when you kept coming back? That's the idea behind value-based care, and Jon Read thinks behavioral health is overdue for it. Jon is the co-founder of Confidant Health, a technology-enabled behavioral health company that uses data, telehealth, and automation to help people get better care without burying providers in paperwork. Luigi flies solo for this one and gets into a healthcare problem that affects just about everyone: the system often rewards more visits, more services, and more volume. But more care doesn't always mean better care. Jon explains why healthcare is slowly shifting toward paying for results instead. They also dig into how AI and automation can take repetitive work off a provider's plate without replacing human judgment, why telehealth should be more than a video call, and what it takes to reach people who might otherwise struggle to get mental health care. Plus, Jon talks about building and selling his first healthcare company, watching the next owners grow it far beyond where he took it, and the business lesson that changed how he thinks about scaling.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why more healthcare doesn't always mean better healthcare How value-based care changes what providers get rewarded for Why measuring patient progress matters in behavioral health How automation cuts down the paperwork nobody went to medical school to do Where AI can help without trying to play doctor Why telehealth can be a lifeline for rural and underserved communities How Confidant Health connects behavioral and medical care What Jon learned after selling his first healthcare company Why stretch goals changed the way he builds businesses Why healthcare is a terrible place to "get rich quick"—and exactly why Jon keeps coming back to it 👤 About our Guest: Jon Read is the co-founder of Confidant Health, a behavioral health company focused on measurement-based care, telehealth, and value-based healthcare. He previously founded Keet Health, which gave him a front-row seat to how data and better incentives can change patient care.    🎧 Why Listen: If you've ever wondered why healthcare seems better at billing than fixing, this episode will make a lot of things click. 🔗 Links + Stuff LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jonread Learn more about Confidant Health: https://www.confidanthealth.com       🔔 Enjoyed the episode? How to Make Money When the Market Goes Down
2026/09/16
What if retirement income didn't depend on the market going up? Most people are told the same thing: buy stocks, hold them, hope they rise, and try not to panic when the market drops. Robby Hogle has a different plan. Robby, founder of Vitality Trading and a former Goldman Sachs Vice President, joins Matt and Luigi to break down his Double Dipping Dividend Strategy, a method built around dividend-paying stocks and covered calls designed to create regular cash flow without turning investing into a full-time job. This isn't about chasing meme stocks or staring at six monitors all day. It's about using boring companies, clear rules, and options in a way that can help investors generate income in up, flat, and even down markets.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why "boring" dividend stocks can be a good thing How covered calls can create extra monthly cash flow Why Robby likes playing the role of the "insurance company" How options can help reduce some downside risk Why cash flow may matter more than watching your account balance How the wheel strategy can help you buy stocks at prices you actually like Why Robby wants at least 10 positions across different industries When paying a financial advisor makes sense (and when it may not) How Robby handled an IBM position after the stock dropped roughly 30% The two stocks Robby likes right now for long-term income investors 👤 About Robby Hogle Robby Hogle is the founder of Vitality Trading and a former Vice President at Goldman Sachs. He teaches investors how to use dividend stocks and options to build cash flow while keeping risk and time spent managing a portfolio in check. Want to see how Robby runs the strategy? The $64K Red Light Bed: Smart Investment or Expensive Toy?
2026/09/09
Is red light therapy a wellness trend? Or a real business opportunity? Cash-pay wellness is growing fast, and business owners are looking for services customers actually want without adding a pile of staff, training, or overhead. In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with Dr. Carl Rothschild and Dock Walls to talk about the Trifecta Pro 450 Red Light Table and, more importantly, the business sitting behind the technology. Dr. Carl explains the science they say powers red light therapy, including its effect on mitochondria, cellular energy, recovery, and fat loss. Dock tackles the operator side: who is buying these systems, how businesses are charging for treatments, what it takes to run one, and how owners can think about adding red light therapy as another revenue stream. 🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why cash-pay wellness keeps gaining ground How red light therapy moved from niche treatment to business opportunity The story behind the Trifecta Pro 450 What mitochondria have to do with red light therapy Why athletes use red light for recovery and performance What FDA clearance means for the product Which types of businesses are adding red light therapy How much training and space the equipment requires How operators can price treatments The financing and revenue math behind the business model Why an existing customer base could make adoption easier 👤 About our Guests: Dr. Carl Rothschild is a chiropractor, author, and longtime red light therapy practitioner who helped develop the Trifecta Pro 450 Red Light Table. Leading at the Speed of Change: Why Great Leaders Know When to Slow Down
2026/09/02
Business is moving faster than ever. AI is accelerating decisions, markets are shifting in real time, and leaders are being asked to adapt constantly. But moving faster isn't always the answer. In this episode of Built to Scale, Matthew R. Meehan sits down with Aileda Bailey, founder of Ask Aileda, to talk about what it really takes to lead through rapid change without getting trapped in urgency, burnout, or reactive decision-making. Aileda explains why leaders need to understand their own "human operating system," how neuroscience can help entrepreneurs perform better under pressure, and why AI should be treated as a resource and NOT a replacement for judgment, intuition, trust, or leadership. Matt and Aileda also dig into one of the biggest challenges founders face as their companies grow: making the shift from owner to leader. Because if every question, decision, and problem still has to come through you, you're not really scaling. You're becoming the bottleneck.   In this episode, you'll learn: Why trying to keep up with constant change can actually make you a worse leader How to step out of urgency and make decisions with more clarity Why AI can accelerate the problems already hiding inside a business The human skills technology can't replace How neuroscience can help you reframe stress and pressure When to trust data—and when experience and intuition matter What "conscious leadership" actually means in practical terms Why founders struggle to give up control as their companies grow The difference between acting like an owner and leading like a CEO Why scaling requires reinvesting in your people and organization Simple habits that can help leaders think more clearly and perform better under pressure   Your Challenge Before your next big decision, don't react right away. Take a pause. Step away from the screen. Take three deep breaths, go for a walk, or give yourself 24 hours if the decision allows it. Then ask yourself: Am I making this decision from clarity, or from urgency? And if your business is growing, take it one step further: What am I still controlling that someone else on my team should own? Pick one decision to slow down and one responsibility to let go of this week. That's your challenge.   Connect with Aileda Bailey Ask Aileda Website: https://askaileda.com Instagram: https://instagram.com/askaileda Facebook: https://facebook.com/askaileda LinkedIn: https://linkedin.com/in/askaileda YouTube: https://youtube.com/@askaileda   Need capital before growth turns into another bottleneck? If your business is growing but still feels stuck, the answer is not always "throw more money at it." The right capital strategy should support the right growth plan. Matt and the Credit Banc team help business owners explore financing options for working capital, acquisitions, equipment, expansion, and growth opportunities before they are stuck scrambling at the last minute. Learn more here: https://tinyurl.com/3dh9vy86     Built to Scale is a podcast segment from The Liquid Lunch Project, hosted by Matt, built for entrepreneurs, founders, and business owners who want to grow smarter, tighten operations, improve profitability, and build companies that can scale without chaos running the show.
AI Won't Fix Your Business. It'll Expose It.
2026/08/26
What happens when you add AI to a business with bad systems? You don't magically get a better business. You may just break things faster. Jeff MacPherson, CEO of Cloud37, joins Matt Meehan and Luigi Rosabianca to talk about what AI can actually do for small businesses—and where founders keep getting it wrong. Jeff has spent years building tech, including an early Instagram automation platform that sent more than a billion messages before Facebook shut it down. Today, he helps companies turn what their best people know into repeatable systems that can scale. The big lesson? Stop chasing the newest AI tool. Fix the way your business works first.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why AI exposes bad processes instead of fixing them The onboarding mistake that quietly slows down growth Why standard questions make AI work better How to pull knowledge out of your best employees' heads Why human adoption is often harder than the tech How one financial firm improved sales and service with the same system Why AI may expose fake experts faster than real ones The reason "white glove" service still matters Why relationships may become more valuable as AI gets better What losing an entire company to Facebook taught Jeff about platform risk Why founders should build systems—not depend on one AI model   👤 About our Guest: Jeff MacPherson is the CEO of Cloud37, where he helps businesses turn internal knowledge and proven processes into AI-powered systems that can scale. He previously built one of the earliest Instagram messaging automation platforms and has spent more than a decade building technology businesses.    🎧 Why Listen: AI can make a good process faster. It can also make a bad process fail faster. Before you automate everything, figure out what actually works, make it repeatable, and keep the human relationships your competitors can't copy. Before You Buy a Business, Check These Red Flags
2026/08/19
Would you buy a business that loses its clients the minute the owner walks out the door? Muriel Touati reviewed more than 100 businesses while hunting for an acquisition. A lot of them looked good from across the room. Up close? Different story. Founder dependency. Weak recurring revenue. Too much money tied to one client. No real digital marketing system. And, in one case, a $3.7 million deal with 40% monthly customer churn. Hard pass. Muriel joins Matthew R. Meehan and Luigi Rosabianca to break down the biggest red flags in business acquisition, what lenders really care about, and how owners can build a company that is easier to grow, finance, and sell.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why founder dependency can kill a business sale How customer concentration scares buyers and lenders Why predictable revenue matters in business valuation The difference between recurring revenue and starting from zero each month How digital marketing can increase company value Why off-market deals may beat crowded business listings How LinkedIn and email can support deal sourcing What buyers should check before signing an acquisition deal How SBA loans and rent replacement may help finance a purchase Why a "good deal" can still be a very expensive headache   👤 About our Guest: Muriel Touati is the founder of Exit 3D Studio and author of The Valuation Gap: What Buyers See That Sellers Miss. She helps business owners reduce founder dependency, build better lead generation systems, and prepare their companies for growth or sale.    🎧 Why Listen: Before you buy a business—or try to sell yours—listen to this episode. Win Today: How Great Leaders Reset Under Pressure
2026/08/12
Positive thinking might be the reason you're still stuck. Pressure doesn't vanish when you become a better leader. The stakes just get bigger. Performance coach and sports psychology expert Joshua Lifrak joins Matt and Luigi to explain how leaders can stay focused, reset after a bad result, and build confidence that is backed by real work, not wishful thinking and a motivational coffee mug. Joshua breaks down the same mental habits used by elite athletes, championship teams, and high-performing business leaders. The goal is not to feel great every second. It is to see the facts, control the next move, and stop one bad moment from wrecking the whole day.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why pressure is not the enemy How emotions can help or hurt performance Why neutral thinking can beat positive thinking How "Mile Zero" helps you reset after a win or loss Why leaders should "do simple better" The difference between real confidence and pure delusion How blame, excuses, and low standards create losing teams Why great leaders catch people living the company's values A simple morning reset that starts without your phone How small daily wins turn into major results  👤 About our Guest: Joshua Lifrak is a performance coach, sports psychology expert, and author of Win Today. Think owning a bar is just pouring drinks and counting cash? Think again. Bar owner and coach Chris Schneider breaks down what really makes a bar work…and why a packed room can still leave you broke on Monday. Chris joins Matthew R. Meehan and Luigi Rosabianca to talk pricing, staff, food, location, profit, and the small costs that can quietly wipe out your margin. He also explains why gut instinct is not enough, why simple drinks often win, and why your parking lot may matter more than your cocktail list.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why bar owners need to follow the numbers How bad staff culture kills retention Why a flashy location can hurt your profit Why beer and well drinks still drive sales How food keeps customers spending longer What bar owners miss about insurance costs Why happy hour laws change by state How one small personal detail can build customer loyalty Why a busy bar can still lose money What every small business can learn from hospitality   Ready to see what your favorite bar is really dealing with? Mark Roberge's Formula for Smarter Sales and Safer Growth
2026/07/29
Most sales problems start when the seller won't stop talking. Mark Roberge (HubSpot's founding CRO, Harvard Business School lecturer, and co-founder of Stage 2 Capital) joins Matt and Luigi to challenge the loudest myths in sales and startup growth. His take is simple: great selling is not about pressure, slick pitches, or talking someone into a bad deal.    It's about asking better questions, finding the real problem, and knowing when to walk away. The conversation also tackles a mistake that kills promising companies: scaling before customers are getting real value. Mark breaks down why rising revenue can fool founders, how to test product-market fit, and what must be true before a business earns the right to grow faster.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why sales is about discovery, not persuasion The questions that expose what a buyer really needs How to reframe a bad decision without sounding like a jerk Where ethical selling ends and buyer responsibility begins Why cold calls still work better than people claim The tradeoff between outreach volume and personalization Why small dinners and face-to-face meetings are making a comeback The danger of using revenue as your only scoreboard Product-market fit, go-to-market fit, and building a durable moat Why scaling too early can wreck a good company The HubSpot negotiation move involving a handful of M&M's Why Mark is donating the proceeds from The Science of Scaling to McLean Hospital   💡 Notable takeaway: "Selling is about buying. It's about helping the buyer buy and solve their problems."   👤 About our guest: Mark Roberge helped grow HubSpot from zero revenue to IPO as its founding Chief Revenue Officer. He now teaches at Harvard Business School, leads Stage 2 Capital, and created The Science of Scaling, an evidence-based framework for growing companies without outrunning customer value.   🎧 Why listen? Because this episode will help you sell smarter, spot bad growth early, and avoid scaling your business before it's ready.   🔗 Links + Stuff Mentioned Sales Acceleration Formula: https://www.amazon.com/Sales-Acceleration-Formula-Technology-Companies/dp/1119047072 Stage 2 Capital: https://www.stage2.capital/ Winning by Design Frameworks: https://winningbydesign.com Force Management MEDIC Framework: https://forcemanagement.com Connect on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/markroberge/ Follow on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@ScienceofScaling     🔔 Enjoyed the episode? Can Blockchain Actually Help World Peace?
2026/07/22
Can blockchain do more than make rich people argue on the internet? In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with Erai Beckmann, founder of Peace Through Trade, to talk about a much bigger use case for blockchain, AI, and cryptocurrency: global trade that creates trust, financial access, and maybe even less fighting between humans. Wild concept, apparently. Erai breaks down why trade has historically been one of the strongest tools for reducing conflict, how blockchain can open doors for people left out of traditional finance, and why Peace Through Trade is building a legal, sustainable Layer-1 Proof-of-Work blockchain with real-world use in mind.  The conversation covers regulation, energy use, stablecoins, government trust, environmental impact, and the giant gap between hype coins and technology built to last.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why trade can reduce conflict better than speeches How blockchain could expand global finance Why crypto needs rules before it grows up The problem with pump-and-dump coin culture How Peace Through Trade uses less energy than Bitcoin Why sustainability also makes business sense What stablecoins can do for global commerce Why governments need trust before they back blockchain How small businesses could benefit from better financial tools Why financial access matters for peace, trade, and growth   💡 Notable Takeaway: "Our goal was to build something legally and also something that was good for the environment in the realm of blockchain and AI."   👤 About our Guest: Erai Beckmann is the founder of Peace Through Trade, a blockchain and AI ecosystem focused on global trade, sustainability, and financial access. The project is building a Layer-1 Proof-of-Work blockchain, utility coin, wallet, stablecoins, and marketplace tools designed for real-world use.    🎧 Why Listen: Listen to this episode if you want a clearer take on where blockchain may be headed after the hype…and why trade, trust, regulation, and access may matter more than the next coin everyone is screaming about.    🔗 Links + Stuff Peace Through Trade: https://peaceretrade.com LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/peacethroughtrade/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/peacethroughtrade Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61575979239479 X: https://x.com/PTT_Blockchain     🔔 Enjoyed the episode? The Four Signs Your Business Is Stuck
2026/07/21
Your business can be busy and still be stuck. Revenue may be coming in. The team may be working hard. The founder may be carrying the whole thing on their back. But if margins are getting tighter, communication is breaking down, decisions are bottlenecked, and nobody really owns revenue… that business is not scaling. It's surviving. In this episode of Built to Scale, Matt sits down with Autumn McFarland, a fractional COO who helps founder-led and growth-stage companies get unstuck, rebuild operational clarity, and create the foundation they need to grow without chaos running the show. Autumn breaks down the four triggers she looks for when a business is stuck: founder burnout, siloed departments, product and customer misalignment, and unclear revenue ownership. She also explains why many founders misdiagnose revenue problems as sales problems, when the real issue is often deeper inside the business. Matt and Autumn dig into what happens when a company outgrows the systems that got it started, why asking for help is not weakness, and how a fractional COO can come in without ego, identify the real problems, and help a business breathe again. In this episode, Matt and Autumn talk about: Founder burnout and why it shows up before the business breaks How siloed departments quietly kill momentum Why customer feedback matters more than internal assumptions Who should actually own revenue inside the company The difference between a sales problem and an operations problem Why slow leaks in the business can become expensive fast What a fractional COO actually does How the right operator can help founders get out of the weeds Why asking for help is a superpower How operational structure can make a business more scalable and transferable If your company is growing but still feels messy, reactive, or too dependent on the founder, this episode is worth your time. About Autumn McFarland Autumn McFarland is a fractional COO who works with founder-led and growth-stage companies to improve operations, strengthen teams, identify bottlenecks, and build the foundation needed for sustainable growth. She helps business owners get clear on what is actually holding the company back, align the team around real priorities, and create systems that support the next stage of growth. Equipment Financing Without Getting Screwed
2026/07/15
That "great deal" on equipment financing might be eating your lunch. In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with Rob Misheloff of Smarter Finance USA to talk about the stuff most lenders do not explain clearly: equipment financing, lease terms, credit scores, hidden fees, auction purchases, and why small business owners need to read the fine print before signing anything with a payment attached. Rob breaks down how equipment financing really works, why the market has gotten tighter, and what business owners should watch for when buying trucks, machinery, med spa equipment, construction gear, and other big-ticket tools of the trade.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why equipment financing is not the same as a regular loan. How "simple rate" can make a deal look cheaper than it really is. Why banks and lenders have gotten pickier after COVID. What credit score usually gets you decent financing. Why used equipment can still be financed. How auction financing works when you need cash fast. Red flags that scream, "Run before they keep your money." Why first and last payments are common, but sketchy brokers are not. How leaseback deals work when you already own equipment. Why your equipment may be worth less to a lender than it is in your head.   👤 About our Guest: Rob Misheloff is the founder of Smarter Finance USA, a business financing company focused on equipment financing and helping business owners make smarter borrowing decisions. His team works with many lenders to help fund equipment deals for small businesses across industries.    🎧 Why Listen: Before you finance your next truck, machine, trailer, med spa device, or mystery gadget from an auction, listen to this one first. Your financial advisor may be nice. That does not mean they are safe.
2026/07/08
In this episode of The Liquid Lunch Project, Matt and Luigi sit down with securities lawyer David P. Meyer to talk about the ugly side of investing: broker misconduct, crypto scams, hidden fees, fake online "experts," and the very real ways smart people lose serious money. David also shares how he built a national securities litigation practice after taking on Prudential Securities in his twenties and winning a jaw-dropping $262 million jury verdict. Not bad for a guy who says he was basically just trying to avoid reading tax code forever.   🍸 What you'll hear in this episode: Why you should never invest with an unlicensed person. Ever. How to use brokercheck.org before handing over a dollar. Why "pig butchering" scams are stealing life savings. How fake crypto platforms make fake profits look real. Why deepfake AI is making financial fraud even scarier. What brokers are supposed to do when elderly clients move large sums. Why private real estate deals need legal review before you wire money. How hidden investment fees quietly eat into your portfolio. Why trust is often the scammer's favorite tool. What to do before a bad investment turns into a financial crime scene.   💡 Notable Takeaway: "People will drive across town to save 10 cents on a can of soup. But they'll hand their life savings over to anyone in a nice-looking suit and a firm handshake."   👤 About our Guest: David P. Meyer is a securities lawyer and founding partner at Meyer Wilson Werning, where he helps investors recover losses from broker misconduct, investment fraud, and financial abuse. Built to Scale: The 5 Financial Blind Spots That Stop Business Owners from Scaling
2026/07/07
Revenue looks great on a scoreboard. But if your cash flow is a mess, your margins are thin, and your financials only get attention during tax season… that growth might be hiding a much bigger problem. In this episode of Built to Scale, Matt sits down with Larry Rice, CPA, CEPA, and founder of RVG & Company, to talk about the financial blind spots that quietly keep business owners stuck, stressed, and scrambling. They dig into why revenue is not the same as financial health, how fast growth can actually make bad decisions worse, and why your CPA should not be treated like an emergency contact you only call once a year. Larry also breaks down the numbers every owner should be watching, when to upgrade your financial team, and why clean books matter long before you look for funding, buy another company, or think about selling. This one is for every business owner who has ever asked, "We're growing… so why does it still feel so tight?" In this episode, Matt and Larry talk about: Revenue vs. profit vs. cash flow The financial numbers every business owner should know  Why growth can expose cracks instead of fixing them How cash flow surprises sneak up on scaling companies  When to bring in a bookkeeper, controller, or CFO Why tax planning should happen before tax season How messy financials can hurt funding, acquisitions, and exits The danger of taking business and tax advice from TikTok If you're trying to scale without flying blind, this episode is worth the listen.   About Larry Rice Larry Rice is a CPA, CEPA, and managing partner at RVG & Company, where he works with business owners on tax strategy, financial planning, and fractional CFO-style advisory support.
