Send us Fan Mail This week on When Doves Podcast, Jared and Ed get down and way too funky as they dive headfirst into Prince’s legendary “chicken grease” scratch guitar style — the tight, percussive magic that makes your shoulders move before your brain even clocks what’s happening. They start by tipping the hat to the OG architects of the groove, breaking down the genius of Jimmy Nolen and Freddie Stone, the unsung heroes who turned rhythm guitar into a full-on rhythmic weapon. Then it’s off to Paisley Park (spiritually, at least) as they track how Prince took that foundation and, across his first eight albums, refined it into something unmistakably his own — sharp, sexy, and impossibly precise. Along the way, there’s plenty of “wait, did you hear THAT?” moments, a lot of stank-face reactions, and a full-on celebration of the Purple One’s funkiest instincts. The episode wraps with the guys’ top 5 Prince tracks where that chicken grease is front and center. Strap in. It’s nerdy, it’s greasy, it’s deeply funky. 🎸 Support the show A deeper dive into Prince than you probably wanted

Send us Fan Mail The mini-season on D'Angelo comes to a close, as Ed and Jared discuss his final (so far) album, Black Messiah, credited to D'Angelo and the Vanguard. Along the way, the fellas discuss new podcast ideas, the weaknesses of the Back to the Future trilogy, best party games and so much more.  They also dive deep into what could be D'Angelo's crowning achievement, what his loss means for music and what he fought to overcome along the way. Send us Fan Mail Join Ed and Jared for a deep-groove wander through D’Angelo’s Voodoo, the landmark album that reshaped twenty-first-century soul. From the alchemy behind its velvet-grit sound to the legacy of “Untitled (How Does It Feel?),” the guys trace how Voodoo became a modern classic. Their path, naturally, spirals into delightful side streets: Sammy Davis Jr.’s lost Poor Devil pilot, the existential truths of papaya, tapas logic, a surprising detour through Bad Company, a warm nod to the Simpsons, and a handful of other curiosities that flutter into the mix like vinyl dust in late-night studio light. It’s a conversation equal parts music nerdery, cultural archaeology, and friendly chaos. Tune in and let the needle drop. Support the show A deeper dive into Prince than you probably wanted
