Teacher Recruitment Changes Lives. It Did Mine
2026/09/17
Let’s talk about teachers on this episode of Heard Tell, specifically how a program covered by Amelia Knisely in WV Watch reminds me of the programs that allowed my parents to not only go to college, but make educating West Virginians an entire lifetime that had far-reaching effects on who I became. Amelia Knisely’s piece can be read here: https://westvirginiawatch.com/2026/09/15/state-funded-college-scholarship-successfully-tackling-wv-teacher-shortage/ ______ Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? Old Biases Ain’t Working in New Media Ecosystem
2026/09/15
Some brief thoughts on why the privilege of platform demands that we who have it must be willing to adapt and change, because the audience doesn’t care about the same things we do. Being protective of the quality of work, not precious about what the audience wants to call it or how they want to intake it, on this Heard Tell. ______ Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? 25 Years Of Still Not Knowing How To Talk About 9/11

My personal habit of not really talking about 9/11 on 9/11 ends today. And going forward. I talk about why, my experience that day, dealing with memory, generational shift, and more. Does the Governor's Shirt Color Matter in West Virginia Politics? YES!
2026/09/09
All heck is breaking loose in West Virginia’s gubernatorial politics. After weeks if not months of speculation US Senator and former WV Governor Jim Justice openly admitted he is considering another run his old job. The current governor, Patrick Morrisey, was already on a string of bad press before that, and over the weekend found himself at the center of another controversy. Center being the key word, as he flipped the coin for WVU football’s home opener wearing a dark blue WV State Parks polo surrounded by 60k West Virginians all wearing white. Because all WVU fans knew to wear white. Is that fair? On this Heard Tell we talk about how there is no such thing as fair in politics, that Charleston Gazette piece that I think was over the line critical of Patrick Morrisey, the reasons why Gov. Morrisey is having a rough go of it, thoughts on the quasi-primary that appears to be under way, and what it all means. Or should mean, if we were a more serious people than apparently we are. All that and more on this episode of Heard Tell. ______ Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? Perspective, Expectations, and Affordability's Moving Target
2026/08/07
Instead of yelling at others as part of the “affordability”, for this Heard Tell we take the roiling online debate and bring it back to the personal. Having a diverse educational and work background is a good place to start, and being the parent of young adult kids who are navigating these issues in real time means some helpful context. Then we can run the concept through a filter of perspective, knowledge, and accountability before we go off on social media projecting our thoughts on others. ______ Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? Let's Talk West Virginia Water Right Quick
2026/08/05
The old saying goes being listened to is better than being heard because the latter is passive and automatic whereas listening is active and requires focus. But I suspect what sounds like a good idea isn’t going to go well for Gov Patrick Morrisey because the folks on his “listening tour” wanted to be heard the first time and don’t want just attention they want it fixed. But there is no easy fix. The people don’t want to hear that, and the governor can’t say that. Meanwhile, too many are going without reliable access to the very foundational building block of life as we know it: water. Maybe the governor never has the experience of turning on the tap and getting that rotten egg smell as red goop sulpher runs for a bit before you get to the better, cleaner water like was one of my chores in the church I grew up. I talk about that, what is/isn’t the fault of Patrick Morrisey or any other elected official, reality vs rhetoric, and the real cost of infrastructure on this Heard Tell. ______ Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles? "Follow the money" Explains Sports and Politics
2026/07/13
One of our principles on Heard Tell when covering politics & culture is “follow the money” since that’s the closest you usually can get to the truth in a world that is all about image, branding, and marketing. But the same increasingly applies to sports, and with sports media and political media both chasing the content economy the two genres have more in common than not. Our friend Dave Van de Walle of the Vandy program and a long-time marketing and sports professional joins us to talk about it all on this episode of Heard Tell. America 250 w/Englishman Ben Harris: Part Two
2026/07/05
Talking America 250 (Part 2). The conversation turns stateside as Ben Harris, an Englishman with a serious soft spot for America but experienced working in the UK Parliament, walks through his viral essay on American exceptionalism: freedom, abundance, and the strange magic of a country built on ideals instead of blood and soil. Andrew and Ben talk grocery store abundance vs. European scarcity, why American diversity actually works when almost nowhere else's does, and why unaccountable government and corruption, not ideology, are the real threats to what makes America work. They close out with some real optimism about the next generation, a few digs at UK politics (RIP Andy Burnham's honeymoon), and a proper 4th of July toast to the great, imperfect, ridiculous, beautiful experiment that is America. America 250 w/Englishman Ben Harris Part One
2026/07/05
For the 4th of July and reviving an old tradition, Host Andrew sits down with our man in Westminster, Ben Harris, for the 4th of July episode. Ben (soccer jersey and all) breaks down why Britain can't build anything due to a planning system where NIMBYs hold veto power over housing, energy, even supermarkets, and how an entire generation of young Brits is getting crushed by it. They dig into the UK's revolving door of PMs, the "triple lock" pension time bomb, Starmer's political faceplant over winter fuel payments, the differences in free speech in the UK and America, structural issues and how politics not only can't fix them but makes the situation worse. Plus how the UK's issues connect back to America: same structural rot, just a bigger economy buying us time. If you want to understand why the UK feels stuck, and how America needs to pay attention to avoid the same traps, Ben Harris and Andrew Donaldson lay it out and more on Heard Tell Watch the full video here: https://open.substack.com/pub/heardtell/p/the-economy-but-in-plain-language?r=17xga&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true -------------------- Heard Tell SubStack Free to subscribe, comes right to your inbox https://www.heardtellmedia.com Questions, comments, concerns, ideas, or epistles?
