Description

The most effective prayers in virtually every religion and spiritual practice throughout history follow the same pattern. Rev. Bill Marchiony and Carol L. Lawrence talk about the five-step formula for Practical Prayer, and the shift in perspective that can be required to allow our prayers to create real new experiences in our lives. Each weekly episode digs into the topic from a fresh angle, providing insight on the ways that our beliefs, our upbringing, our education and our society come together to make our lives the way they are. They also provide the spiritual tools we can use to move beyond those old influences and open ourselves to the life of our dreams. Rev. Bill Marchiony, DD is an ordained Minister of Religious Science, Spiritual Director of New Thought Philadelphia, and author of “Practical Prayer for Real Results”. He has been studying and teaching these powerful principles since the 1990s. Before that, he was a zany morning radio air personality, which makes this podcast fun to listen to. Carol L Lawrence is an author, Spiritual Life Consultant, inspirational speaker who has spent 30+ years in church leadership, spirituality and biblical studies, and seminary education. Having pastored churches across denominations and racial diversity has given her a respect for a broad and inclusive theological perspective. She’s also the host of the “Jazz Divine” podcast, a unique worship/meditation experience with Smooth Jazz. Together, this unlikely duo explores the transformation that is possible when these powerful New Thought teachings are added to a more traditional religious framework. A Practical Prayer is a prayer that WORKS! These discussions dive into the details of how it works, and how to work it. Looking Forward
2025/12/24
Carol is a planner, always preparing for what's coming up next. As the new year approaches, other people tend to do the same thing, and watching it brings to mind our need to release what's old to keep from picking it up again. Rev. Bill points out that this is a specific example of the process in a Practical Prayer, in which we identify what's not working, pivot to what we want instead, and then take steps to bring ourselves into the consciousness of the new experience. Henry Ford said, "if you think you can, you're right, and if you think you can't you're right." Ernest Holmes expanded and explained how and why that applies to our belief. Rev. Bill, solo in this episode, dives into the topic, citing page 52 of Holmes' "Science of Mind" textbook. Thank you for listening to the Practical Prayer podcast - please invite your friends to listen! Release, Trust, Receive
2025/12/10
Carol is making her annual plan for the upcoming year, and has noticed that there is a spiritual aspect that includes the ability to let go of the plan when something different comes up. Rev. Bill points out some of the many ways that happen, from pro football to our breathing, and how crucial it is to trust the process. Light
2025/12/03
Carol has been feeling "brilliant darkness" in the world lately - from politics, social media, and the way people are interacting with each other. Rev. Bill explores the ways that we can bring our Light into the darkness, and concludes with a prayer for the planet and 8 billion people. Ensembles
2025/11/26
Carol has been listening to concerts lately, and noticed the way the different instruments blend to bring the music alive. She has a concern that the beautiful sounds created by AI could make it obsolete, ending the collegiality and collaboration between musicians. Rev. Bill notes that technology always makes new things possible, but leaves room to preserve the rich value of what's come before. Heaven and Hell
2025/11/19
Carol observes that notions of heaven and hell - what becomes of us after our human lives end - generate a huge amount of concern in traditional churches. Rev. Bill explains the New Thought understanding, and that we actually don't have to wait for death to experience either one. New Thought
2025/11/12
Rev. Bill reminds us that New Thought is not new, but is the creative process that has been at work since the beginning of time. He then describes how the New Thought movement began, the badasses and troublemakers who contributed to it, and how we got to where we are today. Unity, Oneness and Fate
2025/11/05
Carol notes the internal process we go through when we're dealing with a particularly challenging situation - surrounded by darkness, searching for a glimmer of light, feeling hopeless and looking for something (or someone) to blame. She and Rev. Bill discuss the spiritual perspective, and how an awareness of Oneness can begin to turn the experience around. Principle
2025/10/29
Rev. Bill finds the New Thought teaching to be very simple and straightforward, and has been schooled by Carol over the many episodes of this podcast that people in traditional religion don't think that way. Carol describes how she can now speak both languages, using the one that's appropriate to the audience. Thank you for listening to the Practical Prayer podcast - please invite your friends to listen! Rev. Bill is back from the ANTN Retreat with news about "An Awakened Path." Bill describes the new collaboration between the various branches of the New Thought community to bring these powerful ideas more widely into the world. Gratitude
2025/10/15
Carol notes that "thank you" shows good manners, but that gratitude is more of an attitude. Rev. Bill points out that Gratitude is the next-to-last step in a Practical Prayer, and it's the only one that we can actually feel in our body. Intelligence, Authentic and Otherwise
2025/10/08
Carol has been aware of an increasingly chaotic swirl of events and changes going on, including the added complexity brought on by AI. Her question is who's thinking? Is anybody thinking? Have we outsourced our thinking to AI? Rev. Bill turns the conversation to ethics, moving from what we can do to what we choose to do. Timing
2025/10/01
One of the things that used to drive Carol nuts was when someone was working hard to get through a major challenge, and wasn't getting the desired result, a church friend would say "it's God's timing". Rev. Bill points out that this is dismissive of the person's experience, and makes God the scapegoat. Thank you for listening to the Practical Prayer podcast - please invite your friends to listen!
