Episode 159: When Food Becomes an Idol: What Are You Really Hungry For?
2026/10/21
When Food Becomes an Idol: What Are You Really Hungry For?Living on Mission Podcast | FILLED Series — Episode 2 What if your struggle with food isn't always about what you're eating, but what you're looking to food for? As a nutrition coach, I've spent years helping women build healthier habits, nourish their bodies, and practice self-control. But here's something I've learned: You can change what you eat without ever changing what you're looking to food for. In this second episode of our FILLED series, we're going deeper into the relationship between food, comfort, contentment, and idolatry. Food is a GOOD gift from God! But what happens when we begin depending on it for the peace, comfort, or satisfaction that only He can ultimately provide? We're looking at what Scripture teaches about our deepest longings, why we sometimes turn to food when we're not physically hungry, and how Jesus offers something far greater than temporary satisfaction. In this episode, we'll talk about: How good gifts can become idols when we give them too much authorityWhy emotional eating isn't always about a lack of disciplineThe cycle of restriction, guilt, and starting overWhat Jeremiah's broken cisterns teach us about seeking satisfactionWhy Jesus calls Himself the Bread of LifeHow to recognize what you're really hungry forScripture referenced: Psalm 63:1–5 | Jeremiah 2:13 | John 6:35 | Psalm 23:1 A question to take with you this week: What am I asking food to give me that I should be seeking from God? Friend, you can lose weight, build muscle, and hit your macros perfectly and still be searching for satisfaction in all the wrong places. Jesus isn't offering us another strategy for controlling our cravings. He's offering us Himself. Because the goal isn't simply to be strong. It's to be surrendered. Episode 158: Gluttony: The Sin We Don't Talk About in Church
2026/10/14
Gluttony: The Sin We Don't Talk About in ChurchWhen was the last time you heard a sermon about gluttony? We talk about pride, greed, lust, and drunkenness in the church, but somehow, gluttony rarely makes the conversation. And yet, Scripture has quite a bit to say about our appetites and what happens when something God created for our enjoyment begins to master us. In this first episode of my FILLED series, we're having an honest conversation about food, self-control, and surrender. And let me be clear: Gluttony doesn't have a body type. This isn't about your weight, eating dessert, or enjoying a big meal with your family. Food is a GOOD gift from God! But there's a difference between enjoying the gift and allowing it to become our god. We're also diving into the fascinating way God designed our bodies to recognize hunger and fullness, why whole foods tend to be more satisfying than ultra-processed foods, and how our modern food environment can make overeating easier. As a nutrition coach, I love teaching women how to nourish their bodies. But here's what I know: You cannot macro-track your way into holiness. This is about more than what we're putting on our plates. It's about what's happening in our hearts. In this episode, we'll explore: What Scripture actually teaches about gluttonyWhy gluttony isn't determined by body sizeHow God designed our hunger and fullness signalsThe difference between enjoying food and being mastered by itWhy discipline isn't legalismHow the Holy Spirit equips us to practice self-controlScripture referenced: 1 Corinthians 6:12, Proverbs 23:20–21, Philippians 3:19, Romans 12:1–2, 1 Timothy 4:4–5, and Galatians 5:22–23. The question I'm leaving you with: Have I surrendered my appetite to Jesus? Because food is a gift from God, but it was never intended to be our master. I don't simply want to be strong. I want to be surrendered. And that's exactly what we're talking about today. I am always love to connect with you! Don't hesitate to reach out! Episode 157: Have I surrendered my appetite to Jesus?
2026/10/07
I’m Back — And I Think We Need to Talk About Our AppetitesI’m back behind the microphone after taking the summer off, and we’re kicking things off with a conversation I haven’t been able to shake. Why don’t we talk about our appetites in the church? I’ve spent years in church and years coaching women in nutrition and fitness, and I’ve noticed something: we talk plenty about diets, weight loss, macros, body image and even self-control. But two words we rarely talk about are gluttony and fasting. And Scripture has quite a bit to say about both. This episode is the beginning of a new conversation about food, hunger, discipline and surrender—and it starts with a question I’ve been asking myself: Have I surrendered my appetite to Jesus? Because food is a GOOD gift from God. Enjoying a meal isn’t sinful. Eating dessert isn’t sinful. And gluttony certainly doesn’t have a body type. But Scripture also tells us, “I will not be mastered by anything.” (1 Corinthians 6:12) So what happens when our appetites begin to master us? Why is it sometimes so difficult to tell our flesh no? And what can the forgotten spiritual discipline of fasting teach us about hunger, self-control and our dependence on God? In this comeback episode, we’re talking about the difference between enjoying food and being ruled by it, why biblical fasting is different from intermittent fasting, and why caring for our bodies is about so much more than hitting our macros or seeing a certain number on the scale. Over the next few episodes, we’re going even deeper into gluttony, fasting and what it looks like to bring our appetites under the lordship of Christ. Because I don't simply want to be strong. I want to be surrendered. Scripture mentioned in this episode: 1 Corinthians 6:12 Psalm 23:1 Matthew 6:16 Galatians 5:22–23 The question to take with you this week: Have I surrendered my appetite to Jesus? I’m so glad to be back. Let’s do this. I am always love to connect with you! Don't hesitate to reach out! Episode 156: What I Learned In Italy About Food, Freedom and Faith
2026/06/10
After two weeks in Italy filled with buttery croissants, fresh pasta, pizza, wine, gelato, and unforgettable family memories, I came home with more than photos and souvenirs. I came home with perspective. In this final episode of the season, I'm sharing what God taught me about food, freedom, stewardship, and the subtle ways we can make our bodies, the scale, and our health goals into idols without even realizing it. We'll talk about: ✨ Why food doesn't deserve your fear ✨ The difference between stewardship and obsession ✨ How Romans 12:1-2 reshaped my perspective on health ✨ Why vacations should create memories—not anxiety ✨ What it looks like to honor God with your body without worshipping your body If you've ever felt stressed about summer travel, worried about gaining weight on vacation, or trapped in an all-or-nothing mindset around food, this episode is for you. Remember: your body is a gift to steward, not a god to serve. Resources Mentioned: 📖 Training in Righteousness Blueprint A biblical framework for building habits that honor God and create lasting change. 🍽️ Fed by Faith Nutrition Course Learn how to nourish your body with confidence, wisdom, and freedom—without dieting, guilt, or food obsession. 2026/05/13
Summer has a way of making women feel like they’re constantly falling “off track.” One vacation. One BBQ. One fun weekend. …and suddenly it feels like all progress is ruined. Because one meal doesn’t cause fat gain. 👉 Repeated unhealthy patterns do. And you do NOT need to choose between: making memoriesand feeling good in your body💡 In This Episode We Cover: Why one weekend doesn’t ruin your progressThe real reason women overeat at night in summerHow protein + fiber help stabilize cravings and energyWhy undereating all day backfiresMy simple “Vacation Plate Method”How to stop the cycle of guilt and starting overWhy repeatable meals create freedom and consistency✝️ Faith Focus “He who is faithful in little will also be faithful in much.” — Luke 16:10 Transformation isn’t built through perfection. 2026/04/22
If you’ve ever thought… 👉 “Fasting sounds extreme” 👉 “I could never skip meals” 👉 “Won’t that slow my metabolism?” This episode is for you. Today we’re breaking down intermittent fasting in the simplest way possible—no extremes, no confusion—just truth. Because fasting isn’t about starving yourself… 👉 it’s about finally giving your body a break 👉 and allowing it to work the way God designed it to 💡 What You’ll Learn in This Episode: What intermittent fasting actually is (and what it’s NOT)Why eating all day long may be keeping you stuckHow your body switches from burning sugar → to burning fatThe role of insulin in fat loss and why fasting helpsWhy you do NOT have to give up carbs to lose fatHow fasting supports brain health, energy, and hormone balanceWhat autophagy is (in simple terms) and why it matters for healingHow intermittent fasting aligns with your circadian rhythmA biblical perspective on rhythm and eating during the day📖 Scripture Highlight: “Then they came to urge David to eat food while it was still day…” — 2 Samuel 3:35A reminder that God designed our bodies with rhythm— to fuel during the day and rest at night. 🔥 Key Takeaway: You don’t need another extreme plan. 👉 You need rhythm. 👉 You need consistency. 👉 You need to stop working against your body. Fuel well during the day. Give your body time to rest and burn fat at night. 👣 Where to Start: Keep it simple: ✔️ Stop eating after dinner ✔️ Give your body 12–14 hours overnight ✔️ Build up to 14–16 hours as your body adjusts ⚖️ Important Note: Intermittent fasting is not a replacement for whole-food nutrition. You can’t fast all morning and then eat highly processed foods all afternoon and expect healing. 👉 Fasting works with real, whole foods—not instead of them. 📝 Take the Quiz: https://www.fasterwaycoach.com/protocol-quiz?aid=racheljmitchell Not sure what fasting schedule is best for your body? Episode 148: Reverse Dieting, Stewardship, and Metabolic Healing
2026/02/18
In Part 2 of this conversation, we’re clarifying an important distinction: chronic undereating that leads to biological binge responses is not the same as biblical gluttony. Gluttony is a heart issue — replacing our need for God with food. But many women are not struggling because they love food too much. They’re struggling because they’ve been under-fueling their bodies for years. In this episode, Rachel unpacks: The difference between gluttony and biological survival responsesWhat chronic calorie restriction does to hormones and metabolismWhy restriction often backfires for fat lossWhat reverse dieting is and how it worksWhy slowly increasing calories can restore metabolic trustHow maintenance phases actually support long-term fat lossWhy reverse dieting can be a worshipful act of stewardshipIf you’ve believed the lie that you must restrict forever to see results, this episode will reframe everything. What You’ll Learn Why gluttony and biological binge cycles are not the same thingHow leptin, ghrelin, cortisol, and thyroid hormones respond to chronic dietingSigns your metabolism may be suppressedWhy eating more strategically can reduce binge urgesHow reverse dieting increases metabolic capacityWhy maintenance is not failure — it’s foundationalHow to cycle between maintenance and deficit wiselyScripture Referenced 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you… You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” Ready for Structure? If this episode resonated with you, Rachel’s next FASTer Way round is open. Episode 147: The Biology Behind Binging - Why You're Not Broken
2026/02/11
Binging is often misunderstood as a discipline problem—but in reality, it’s frequently a biological response to chronic undereating. In this episode, we explore the spiritual and biological roots of binge–restrict cycles through the lens of stewardship and Scripture, anchored in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20. What You’ll Learn: Why binging is often driven by undernourishmentHow chronic restriction affects hormones and metabolismWhy “food with no brakes” is a survival responseHow undereating sabotages fat lossWhat biblical stewardship of the body really meansA preview of reverse dieting and metabolic healing (Part 2)Scripture Referenced: 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 I am always love to connect with you! Episode 146: Sugar, Insulin, Artificial Sweeteners & Why Fat Loss Feels So Hard in Midlife
2026/01/21
Sugar isn’t sinful. Artificial sweeteners aren’t automatically better. But confusion around both is keeping many women stuck—especially in midlife. In this episode, we’re having an honest, science-based conversation about sugar, insulin, and artificial sweeteners, and how your body actually responds to sweetness. This isn’t about shame, restriction, or cutting everything out forever. It’s about understanding the biology God designed so you can change habits with clarity instead of guilt. We’ll talk about why fat loss feels harder in perimenopause, how insulin controls fat storage, why “sugar-free” foods can still stall progress, and how artificial sweeteners affect your brain, gut, hormones, and cravings. You’ll also hear practical, realistic ways to reduce sugar and sweetness without extremes. In this episode, we cover: What sugar actually is and how it affects blood sugarThe role of insulin as a storage hormoneWhy chronically elevated insulin blocks fat lossWhy midlife women are more insulin-sensitiveHow artificial sweeteners signal the body like sugarWhy “calorie-free” doesn’t mean metabolically neutralThe impact of artificial sweeteners on cravings, brain, and gut healthCalories vs metabolic signalsBiblical wisdom on self-control and stewardshipPractical ways to reduce sugar and artificial sweeteners sustainablyKey Scriptures Mentioned: 1 Corinthians 10:23Proverbs 25:28Galatians 5:22–23Key Takeaway: You don’t need to quit sugar forever. You don’t need “sugar-free” everything. When you understand how your body responds to sweetness, you’re free to make wiser choices without fear or guilt. Episode 145: What Alcohol Is Doing To Your Fat Loss
2026/01/07
Alcohol isn’t “bad” — but it does change how your body functions. In this first episode of 2026, we’re having an honest, science-based conversation about what alcohol actually does inside the body, how it affects fat loss (especially for midlife women), and why understanding the biology behind our habits empowers real change. This is not a debate about right vs. wrong — but excess has consequences both physically and spiritually. We’ll unpack how alcohol impacts metabolism, hormones, sleep, recovery, and your body’s natural ability to burn fat. I’m also sharing why I’m personally committing to six weeks without alcohol or sugar, how Scripture calls us to be sober-minded and alert, and practical ways to reduce or replace alcohol without guilt or extremes. In this episode, you’ll learn: What alcohol actually is (from a biological standpoint)Why alcohol immediately pauses fat burningHow alcohol affects hormones, cortisol, and insulinWhy fat loss feels harder in perimenopauseThe difference between calorie math and metabolic realityWhat Scripture means by being “sober-minded and alert”Practical, realistic tips to limit or give up alcoholHow understanding science helps us change habits long-termKey Scriptures Mentioned: 1 Peter 5:81 Thessalonians 5:6Titus 2:11–12Reflection Question: Where might understanding the why behind your habits help you steward your body with more wisdom and less guilt? 🎧 Listen now and share this episode with a friend who wants clarity, not confusion.
