ONE TWO THREE FOUR! In the Mid-1970s, New York group the Ramones led a musical revolution to reinvent rock ‘n’ roll. Their loud and lean approach to music, combined with their satirical lyrics and DIY ethic, inspired hundreds of bands all over the world. In this episode of Lisa Traxler’s Sonic Typhoon, a podcast named after a critic’s description of the Ramones’ onstage sound, she interviews long time Ramones associate Daniel Rey. As the band’s producer, co-songwriter, instrumentalist, and confidante, Daniel offers his unique insights about their recordings, inspiration, and chemistry. Both Lisa and Daniel were good friends of lead singer Joey Ramone, and offer up fascinating and humorous stories of their experiences with him. Joey himself appears in the podcast, which includes some of the many voice messages he recorded on Lisa’s answering machine back in the day. Other subjects include Daniel’s extensive experience in the New York rock scene, especially with his own band Shrapnel, memories of legendary rock club CBGB’s, and discussion of various bands and musicians in and around the punk rock scene. Daniel also talks about his forthcoming auction, slated for September 25th at the Newbury Hotel in Boston, MA, where he will be selling items including instruments and memorabilia from his long history with the Ramones. The centerpiece of the sale is the guitar used by Johnny Ramone as his primary instrument over much of the Ramones history - the iconic white Mosrite Ventures II model. Johnny’s original amplifier from the first days of the band is also listed, as well as the band’s hand-written lyrics, Joey’s microphones, and other one-of-a-kind notable items from the era.
