Description

Members of the South Asian Community often go through similar experiences, but don’t discuss problems outside of family out of concern for ‘what the community will say’. Over time, this has led to taboo topics, isolation, oppression, and inequality. And enough is enough. Hosted by second generation British South Asian sisters Taj and Bal, the Changing Suits podcast helps members of the South Asian Community across generation, gender, and geography develop a common understanding and awareness of issues affecting the community, so that the community can thrive. The podcast also gives people outside of the community an opportunity to deepen their understanding of South Asian culture and values so they can help build services, companies, and a society that are better and more inclusive. Tune in each week for a closer look at modern South Asian life with a dose of tradition. Follow the show on social media @changing_suits

Divorced, When Can I Move On?
2026/07/03
Have you ever wondered if it's "too soon" to move on after a divorce? Are you worried about what your family or community might think if you start a new relationship? Should you follow your heart, or the expectations of those around you? In this episode of The Cultural Barrier, Bal and Taj respond to a real question sent in by one of our listeners. After being divorced for a year, he's found happiness in a new relationship—but he's struggling with the pressure and judgement he fears from his parents and the South Asian community. Rather than giving a simple answer, Bal and Taj explore the situation from both perspectives. They discuss the emotional journey of rebuilding your life after divorce, while also considering the cultural expectations, family dynamics and community pressures that many British South Asians experience. This honest and balanced conversation asks whether there is ever a "right" time to move on, how to navigate feelings of guilt, loyalty and judgement, and why rebuilding your life after divorce can be particularly challenging when culture and community expectations are involved. Whether you've been through divorce yourself, supported someone who has, or simply want to understand the cultural barriers many people face, this episode offers relatable discussion, honest opinions and practical insights that may help you see the situation from a different perspective.
Why Does Everything Fall on Her? | Marriage & Mental Load
2026/06/25
A listener writes to us about something many women silently struggle with: carrying the mental load of the family. After five years of marriage, a young child, work responsibilities, household management and family commitments, she feels exhausted, overwhelmed and unsupported. Despite repeatedly trying to discuss it with her husband, the conversations often end in frustration rather than solutions. In this episode, Bal and Taj explore the realities of mental load, burnout and cultural expectations within South Asian families. They discuss why many women feel responsible for everything, how these expectations develop, and what practical steps families can take to create a healthier balance. The conversation also looks at the husband's perspective, the importance of communication, teaching children responsibility, making time for yourself, and protecting relationships from resentment. If you've ever felt like you're carrying everyone else's responsibilities while neglecting your own wellbeing, this episode is for you. Have a question or dilemma you'd like us to discuss? Stop Idolising Others: Learn from them instead
2026/06/11
Why do we idolise certain people, and when does admiration become unhealthy? In this episode of the Cultural Barrier Podcast, we take a deep dive into idolisation, celebrity culture, and the influence of powerful individuals. From social media influencers to religious leaders, we examine why people place others on pedestals and how those individuals can sometimes benefit from that admiration. The discussion highlights the crucial distinction between idolising someone and aspiring to emulate their positive qualities. While role models can motivate us to achieve more, idolisation can create unrealistic expectations and blind us to the reality that every person has flaws. We also discuss the impact idol culture has on young people, why critical thinking matters, and how we can learn from others without losing our own identity or judgement. Key topics include: Idolisation and celebrity worshipThe psychology of admirationInfluence and power dynamicsRole models versus idolsPersonal development and self-awarenessCritical thinking and youth developmentLearning from strengths while accepting human flawsConnect with Changing Suits: https://changingsuits.org/ #Idolisation #RoleModels #PersonalDevelopment #CelebrityCulture #Psychology #Mindset #CriticalThinking #Leadership #SelfGrowth #ChangingSuitsPodcast
My Mother-in-Law Won’t Stop Interfering in My Marriage
2026/06/04
How do you handle an interfering mother-in-law without damaging your marriage? After asking our listeners to anonymously share their challenges, one story stood out because it's a something many people face but rarely talk about openly. A woman wrote to us explaining that her mother-in-law is heavily involved in her marriage. For many people navigating difficult in-law relationships, this situation will feel all too familiar. In this episode, Bal and Taj explore both sides of the story. Is this simply an interfering mother-in-law crossing boundaries, or could there be deeper concerns driving her behaviour? We discuss South Asian family dynamics, marriage expectations, family boundaries, and the challenges that arise when parents struggle to step back after their children get married.  We also explore how relationship advice and unsolicited opinions from family members can affect trust, communication, and emotional wellbeing within a marriage.
