#85 - Deconstructing Diet Culture Language: Reframing Even More Diet Culture Phrases
2024/02/21
This week we’re deconstructing 5 more diet culture phrases! We really enjoy this series, and we hope you do too! This week’s phrases have a bit of a theme - the way that diet culture loves to pathologize totally normal things, add stigma to them, create fear around them, and generally just make them so much worse and more complicated than they need to be. The phrases/terms we're covering in this installment are: Skinny FatFood NoiseCravingsAtypical Anorexiaand Bingeing We're breaking down the ways these phrases are used within diet culture, how they're causing harm, and what we might want to consider saying instead! #84 - Fat Positive Fertility with Nicola Salmon
2024/02/07
This week, we’re talking to Nicola Salmon about all things fat positive fertility! Nicola is the leading voice for fat folks seeking fertility support, bringing a unique fat-positive perspective to her work as a fertility coach and author of the groundbreaking book "Fat and Fertile”. She is a prominent figure in the world of fat activism, using her platform and expertise to challenge the weight bias and stigmas that exist within the fertility industry and empower those who are often marginalized to take control of their reproductive health with confidence and self-assurance. Through her innovative and evidence-based approach, she helps clients find their own path to wellness, free from diets and body shaming, and encourages them to trust and believe in their ability to conceive. With her expert guidance and compassionate support, Nicola is changing the way people approach fertility. We had an awesome conversation with Nicola about... weight bias in fertility medicinewhat the research really says about pregnancy risks for folks in larger bodieswhy you don't need a "fertility diet"how to navigate being told that BMI is a barrier to fertility treatmentways to support both fertility and pregnancy with a non-diet, fat positive approachthe importance of community and so much more! You can connect with Nicola and learn how to work with her on Instagram @fatpositivefertility, or at her website! #83 - Unexpected (But Very Practical!) Benefits of Intuitive Eating
2024/01/24
This week we’re talking about some super practical and sometimes unexpected benefits of intuitive eating! We all know intuitive eating can transform your relationship with food and your body, but what might that look like on a practical level? How does that show up in our lives, from the day-to-day stuff to the big stuff? It can be hard to wrap our heads around why it's worth doing all the work it takes to practice intuitive eating, so these are some examples of how it can impact our lives far beyond whether or not we're eating the cookies! In this episode we're talking about practical benefits like: Feeling more connection to cultural events & experiencesBeing more present at big eventsTraveling with less stress & more flexibilityMaking grocery shopping more efficient & often more cost effectiveWorking out without the rigidity & frustrationSetting boundaries & practicing critical thinking outside of the contexts of food, body, and dietsWant to connect with us to deepen the conversation? #82 - Navigating Non-Diet New Year's Resolutions
2024/01/10
We're so happy to be back this week with a brand new episode all about how to set non-diet New Year's resolutions! We've noticed a lot of people setting resolutions or intentions this year - way more than we have in quite some time - and we wanted to support that choice with a conversation about how we can make sure that diet culture isn't creeping into this practice. In this episode we're chatting all about: Those in & out lists we're seeing everywhere this yearWhy resolutions don't have to look a specific way & some alternatives to the typical strategiesReframes for the usual food, body, and movement-based resolutionsAnd some ideas for resolutions that have nothing to do with food, bodies, or movement at all!Want to connect with us to deepen the conversation? [REPLAY] #15 - New Year, Same Us!
2023/12/27
We're taking our first ever Satisfaction Factor holiday break this year! We’ll be back with a new episode on January 10th, but until then, we hope you enjoy this replay! Get ready for a fun & candid New Year's episode! It’s officially 2022, and Naomi is still rebelling against structure & rigidity, and Sadie is still loving a schedule and a well-established plan. Even though we both function from two pretty opposite operational styles, we both agree that setting any kind of New Year’s resolution, intention, or goal should be something you WANT to do, not something you feel like you HAVE to do because it’s January. There’s nothing magical about January 1st. We’re chatting about all things New Year's: setting realistic resolutions, dry January, a few fun rants about Noom, sugar fasts, detoxes, & WW…and more! [REPLAY] #56 - Coping With Holiday Diet & Body Talk
2023/12/13
We're taking our first ever Satisfaction Factor holiday break this year! We’ll be back with a new episode on January 10th, but until then, we hope you enjoy this replay! If you're dreading the diet & body talk at your holiday family gatherings, you're not alone! Even if we are really good at having these conversations with friends, acquaintances, professionals, or co workers, having these conversations with family can feel way more loaded than it does in other contexts. In this episode we're discussing why diet & body talk hits different from our families, and we're also practicing some responses to common things we might hear around the table, using our Deflect, Educate, and Engage framework (which you might recall from Episode #4 - Diet Talk & Boundaries). [REPLAY] #41 - Caring For Ourselves When The World Is On Fire
2023/11/15
While the context is different, we thought this would be a good time to revisit these self-care practices and conversations about caring for ourselves. And, in an effort to practice what we preach, we took a week off from recording to allow ourselves to rest & regulate. We'll be back with a new episode on November 29th, and we hope this replay will be supportive for you in the meantime. To say that he past few weeks have been hard would be a huge understatement. So this week's episode is all about how we can care for ourselves when it feels like the world is on fire. Black women & femmes have been teaching for generations about the importance of avoiding burnout when fighting oppressive systems. And, while that is not our lesson to teach, we are talking in this episode about: the importance of caring for ourselves & leaving room for our humanity in times of high stress; why it's okay that we all need different things to meet our needs for self-care & processing; and some practical ways that we can engage in self-care right now. #80 - What If Weight Loss Could Actually Help Your Situation?
2023/11/01
This week, we're answering the question, “What if weight loss could actually help my situation?” And if you've ever found yourself wondering about that, you’re not alone. Maybe you understand that health is more complicated than just our personal behaviors, and you've realized that the “thin ideal” isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. But some things still feel more complicated. Because wouldn’t weight loss actually help when it comes to finding clothes that fit, avoiding weight stigma at the doctor and other areas of life, being able to travel or go to the theater, and a whole host of other problems? If this sounds familiar, this episode is for you! In this episode, we're talking about: why intentional weight loss isn't a long-term solutionwhy it's not enough to just quote diet statistics when these questions come upwhat intentional weight loss & get-rich-quick schemes have in commonwhy it's important to honor body autonomy in these conversationswhat a better long-term solution actually isand more!Want to connect with us to deepen the conversation? #78 - Beyond Shrinking & Drinking with Lael Atkinson
2023/10/04
This week, we’re talking to Lael Atkinson (they/them), a certified professional recovery coach who works at the intersection of drinking and dieting. During their experience of parting ways with alcohol and then tackling a lifetime of dieting, disordered eating, and body shame, they found resources that addressed quitting drinking OR that addressed food and body image issues, yet could not find any sources that spoke to the intersection of the two.  And in both their personal experience and the experience they saw with many of their clients, they found that the two do indeed frequently overlap. This led Lael to work with both folks who want to examine their relationship with alcohol and folks who want to divest from diet culture. They also created the Beyond Shrinking & Drinking course to address this intersection. Lael hopes that whether it comes to questioning their drinking, or their participation in diet culture, that people know they can do it without labeling themselves, without judging themselves, and without it reaching a point of being “bad enough.” It’s more than enough to start from a place of asking if your life would be better without it. We had an amazing conversation with Lael about... their own journey with drinking & dieting, and how it led to the work they do todaythe parallels between drinking & dieting (and why comparing booze to food is not helpful)the parallels between drinking culture & diet culturewhy some folks may experience food or body image issues when they quit drinking (and vice versa)how they're working to fight against the shame & stigma of both drinking and dietingand why this work is especially important within the Queer community. You can connect with Lael on Instagram @beyondshrinkinganddrinking, learn how to work with them at LaelAtkinson.com, or join their online course at BeyondShrinkingAndDrinking.com! #77 - Allow Ourselves to Re-Introduce Ourselves!
2023/09/20
Next week will mark two years since we published the first episode of Satisfaction Factor!  In that first episode, we introduced ourselves, told you our origin stories, and generally gave you the low down on who we are, what we do, and what we believe in. So in this week's episode, we're celebrating our podcast-iversary by reintroducing ourselves! We're chatting all about what's changed for us in the past two years in life, business, podcasting, and everything in between.  Thanks to all our amazing listeners & guests for making these past two years so successful!
