Join us each week as we curate content from UMBC‘s social science faculty, students, community partners, and visiting guests and lecturers! The Center for Social Science Scholarship promotes excellence across the social sciences at UMBC. This year's lecture was delivered by Dr. Annamaria Lusardi. Dr. Lusardi is Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research, Director of the Initiative for Financial Decision-Making, and Professor (by courtesy) at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Dr. Lusardi’s remarks take up the question of financial literacy among ordinary people around the world. Ep. 62: The Second Annual UMBC Social Science Alumni Panel

2024/12/04

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of a special event hosted by the UMBC Center for Social Science (CS3). The roundtable, which took place in October 2024 was the second in-person iteration of a series designed to bring together fabulous UMBC alumni from across the social sciences. The roundtable was moderated by CS3’s acting director, Dr. Eric Stokan. The panel brought together the following fantastic UMBC alumni: Michele Berry received a master’s degree in environmental policy from the school of public policy at UMBC, having completed a bachelor's degree at the New School. Michele now works as a stormwater coordinator for the Chesapeake Stormwater Network. Amanda Cardone currently works as a survey methodologist at RTI International. Amanda received a MA in applied sociology at UMBC, in which she honed her expertise in survey science and programming. Amy Soukoup currently serves as a community data analyst for Live Baltimore, a nonprofit that helps potential homebuyers find the right place to live in Baltimore, among other goals. Amy received a MA in economic policy analysis from UMBC. Manisha Vepa earned a bachelor’s degree in global studies and economics at UMBC in 2018 and now works as an economic research analyst and East Asia expert at Ascendant Program Services. Ep. 57: The Maryland Climate Futures Symposium

On today's episode we hear a rebroadcast of a special event sponsored by the UMBC Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program. In April of 2024 (Earth Month, coincidentally), the Sondheim program convened a special panel of five policy experts on climate change to discuss Maryland's climate future. The Climate Futures policy event brought together distinguished speakers from academia, government, and nonprofit organizations. Serena Coleman McIlwain is the Secretary of the Environment for the state of Maryland, having assumed the role under the administration of Governor Wes Moore in March of 2023. Dr. Meghan Avolio is Associate Professor of Earth & Planetary Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University. Sarah T. Koser serves as Restoration Program Manager at the Chesapeake Bay Trust. Julieta Rodrigo is Urban and Community Resilience Manager at the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Brady Walker is Head of US Government Affairs and Market Strategy at Ørsted, a major Danish energy firm specializing in green energy delivery, and is also a UMBC Sondheim Scholars Program alumnus. Ep. 55: The Social Science of Podcasts w/ Dr. Jason Loviglio

On today's episode I speak with Dr. Jason Loviglio, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Media and Communication Studies at UMBC. Dr. Loviglio is the co-editor of The Routledge Companion to Radio and Podcasting Studies, and recently published a piece about podcasting entitled "From Radio to Podcasting: Intimacy and Massification" that echoes many of the themes in our discussion. Dr. Loviglio is also co-editor of Radio Journal: International Studies in Broadcast and Audio Media, among many other professional activities related to audio media. He is also a board member at Wide Angle Youth Media, non-profit organization that provides Baltimore youth with media education to tell their own stories and become engaged with their communities. On today's campus connection, we hear about a recent book from UMBC Media and Communication Studies Associate Professor Elizabeth Patton. Dr. Patton's book is entitled Easy Living: The Rise of the Home Office, and explains key recent trends in work and society--both with great relevance to the rise of podcasting!
