39. Film Club: United 93 (2006)

With the 25th anniversary of 9/11, a day that will live in infamy, we are bringing UNITED 93 to the pod, as Alec and Tim join to talk about Greengrass movie. 38. Henry VIII with Steven Veerapen
2026/09/13
Was Henry VIII a psychopath? Was he black? Now those are probably wildly ahistorical questions, but the man who exemplifies kingship, that famous Holbein painting looming over us all, dominates the Tudor dynasty. His daughter became England’s finest queen, and his wife has fascinated us since she seduced Henry and he broke with Rome to marry her. Joining today is Steven Veerapen, author of Overlord, as we discuss Henry, his personality, and his imperial designs as Ireland was added to his kingdom. 37. The Man Who Saved the SAS with Tim Spicer
2026/09/06
The SAS has often faced threats from the corridors of power. Since its inception in the North African desert during the Second World War, senior officers and civil servants have treated The Regiment with at the very least doubt, and at worst, as was seen after the end of the war, downright hostility when it was disbanded in November 1945. Enter one man, Brian Franks, an SAS man but one who was comfortable in the bar at White’s club in St. James’ schmoozing those sceptics. He had had an extraordinary war, and his biographer, Tim Spicer, joins to discuss him and to speculate as to whether the SAS, again under threat, has people like Franks in the corridors of power today? Bonus: Alexander the Great Lives
2026/09/03
Have you ever dreamed of what might have happened had Alexander the Great not died in 323BC? I have often thought about this, imagining his campaigns continuing to the Western Mediterranean, most particularly Rome and Carthage. Today is a bit of daydreaming and alternate reality as I chat with Patrick Larkin, who has created, using AI, films on YouTube of this ‘what if’ scenario as Alexander dies after a long reign, and his many sons fight for the throne. 36. Alexander the Great with Edmund Richardson
2026/08/30
Some say Alexander was the greatest general of all time, whilst others say he was a genocidal tyrant. In his lifetime conquered more than most empires manage in hundreds of years. He is, though an enigma. Impossible to pin down, which is why he is so endlessly fascinating to historians since antiquity. Is he a god, a king, a man or a boy? Joining today is Edmund Richardson, author of a new book about the Macedonian ruler, as we discuss key points of his life, milestones that perhaps help us understand the kind of man he was. Coming up, a bonus on a new AI movie on YT which asks the question, what if Alexander’s son survived and ruled in his place? It’s a bit of fun so do look out for that. Plenty more history on the way including Henry VIII and the SAS in WW2, so please share with friends and family and if you can leave a good rating I’d be most grateful Edmund Richardson Links Alexander: God, King, Man Moot Trial of Alexander History Book Club Book List Oliver Webb-Carter Links Substack Who Cares Who Wins? Paean to Patrick Leigh Fermor X Instagram Email me: [email protected] Learn more about your ad choices. Film Club: The Odyssey (2026)
2026/08/26
The Odyssey is the new epic from Christopher Nolan, starring Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson. Tim Hewitt joins me as we discuss casting, accents, costume, Batman, Batman costumes and plenty more. Spoilers are a possibility, though if you’re familiar with the Odyssey I wouldn’t worry. Coming up will be an Alexander special as Edmund Richardson joins to discuss his new biography of the great man, and there’s a new AI generated movie about Alexander’s Successors. Our Awards Best Performance Most Egregious Overracting Biggest Plot Flaw Historical Inaccuracy What if Tarantino Made It? 35. Film Club: Zulu
2026/08/23
Film club is like busses on this pod. Nothing for weeks, then three in a row. Yes, that’s right, we’ve another film club coming next, but today it’s Zulu, the classic film directed by Cy Enfield and starring Michael Caine, Stanley Baker and Jack Hawkins. We discuss whether it’s racist, Welsh or just a damn good movie. Joining me today is Roger Moorhouse, historian and author, and in place of Tim again, it’s Alec Marsh, Telegraph columnist, writer for the Spectator and the author of historical thrillers. Coming next, Tim and I discuss Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, starring Matt Damon and Anne Hathaway. Alec Marsh at the Telegraph Our Awards Best Performance Most Egregious Overracting Biggest Plot Flaw Historical Inaccuracy What if Tarantino Made It? 34. Film Club: Zulu Dawn
2026/08/16
Most listeners will remember the Michael Caine and Stanley Baker epic, Zulu, but in order to provide the historical context, I’ve selected Zulu Dawn which was it’s prequel, and so despite being released 15 years later, it’s chronologically 24hours earlier. This is the British film made in 1979 starring Peter O’Toole, Burt Lancaster and Bob Hoskins. 33. Agent Running in the Troubles with John Ware
2026/08/09
Stakeknife, real name Freddie Scappaticci, continues to be officially denied as a British agent by the Government. This is part of their Neither Confirm Nor Deny policy. Indeed the IRA itself is in denial over Scappaticci’s role, which was as a senior member of the provisionals' Internal Security Unit, responsible for rooting out IRA Volunteers who had been giving information to the RUC, Army or MI5. The methods employed by Scappaticci and fellow IRA members involved torture, and ended with shots to head, hence their nickname, the Nutting Squad. A recent inquiry, Operation Kenova, concluded with the Head of the PSNI saying Scappaticci cost more lives than he saved. But, in that same report states he provided a VAST amount of intelligence much of which was valuable. He seemed primarily to be providing his Army handlers, the Force Research Unit, with information on what the IRA was thinking strategically. So, if much of his intelligence was valuable, that presented a complex moral challenge, particularly when one remembers there were dealing with a highly advanced insurgency that killed nearly 2,000 people during the Troubles, around 650 of whom were civilians. But at the same time Scappaticci was, in some cases, torturing British agents himself. In addition, the same organisation, the FRU, ran another agent, Brian Nelson, within the loyalist UDA, and he was in the habit of providing addresses of suspected IRA members to his comrades, who would then pay them a visit and carry out murder and mayhem. He would obtain these details from the Army, and innocent civilians were killed, among them Patrick Finucane, a solicitor from West Belfast. Joining today is John Ware, BBC man, Panorama presenter, and the man who broke the Omagh bombing story. He’s a highly respected journalist of the Troubles, interested in the moral compromises that had to be made during the conflict in Northern Ireland. He’s written a new book, Neither Confirm Nor Deny. 32. Pericles with Paul Cartledge
2026/08/02
Pericles was the foremost statesman of Athens’ classical age, dominating the political sphere, and giving his name to the building programme that produced the architecture we see on the Acropolis today. But what was he really like beyond the orator and politician? Paul Cartledge, AG Leventis Professor of Greek Culture, honorary citizen of modern day Sparta and author of a new biography of Pericles. 31. Homer Haunted & ODYSSEYMANIA with Henry Power
2026/07/26
We are in the midst of Odysseymania as the new film by Christopher Nolan breaks records at the box office. Nolan’s interpretation of the poem has attracted criticism, from casting to armour but any anachronisms are simply the latest in a very long line that began in English with George Chapman’s translation in the 16th century. Henry Power, author of Homer Haunted joins me as we discuss the new movie, why Homer will always be relevant, and we talk about some of the varied and entertaining translations that are out there. The SAS & the General
2026/07/12
After the Second World War the SAS was disbanded, but when a communist insurgency broke out in the British Imperial possession of Malaya, the SAS was reformed. In the years following the Regiment came under the command of an extraordinary soldier, George Lea, veteran of Arnhem and known as the soldier’s General. Joining today is Rupert Hague Holmes, author of Lea’s biography as we discuss the man and the Special Air Service as it evolved from a distrusted regiment to a finely tuned counter-insurgency unit, and the envy of the United States.
