If Your Rescue Dog Stressing You Out?
2022/02/15
In this episode, I want to have a chat with you about how YOU feel. We talk about settling your rescue dog on this podcast a lot. It's what it’s all about. But now that I’ve had my dog Rosa for 8 months, I realise the importance of talking about our emotions as humans.Once your rescue dog has settled in, you're probably going to start seeing some behaviour changes and not all of them are easy to manage without professional help. And some behaviours can be really stressful for us as the humans in the relationship. So in this short episode, we talk about what to do if you're feeling emotionally overwhelmed.  If you ever need to chat, feel free to reach out to me via email nihal@rescuetails.co or on Instagram @nihal_and_rosa.

How to Support Your Dog if They're Reactive on Walks and the Mistakes to Avoid
2021/11/16
In this episode, I invited behaviourist Angie Cook back to the podcast to talk about reactivity. We chat about why some dogs become reactive or sensitive to other dogs and what to do about it.  Angie explains that our dogs often give us signals that they are uncomfortable well before they get anywhere near an approaching dog. We talk about how to read those signals and respond to them to avoid the reaction in the first place.  We also chat about some of the behaviours that dogs naturally do that we as dog parents would prefer they don’t like rolling in dirt, barking or eating poop. Angie explains how suppressing a dog’s natural behaviours can in some cases lead to reactivity so we need to find a balance between managing behaviours and trying to stop them altogether.  Angie is a certified Dog Behaviourist and a certified Family Dog Mediator with the Dog Door Behaviour Centre in North Carolina.   As always I hope you enjoy this episode.  Links we love 🧡 Listen to the first interview with Angie - https://www.rescuetails.co/podcast/episode/1e1195c6/why-our-dogs-are-reactive-to-other-dogs-and-what-we-can-do-to-support-them  Read Kim Brophey's book, Meet Your Dog - https://www.meetyourdogbook.com/  Connect with Angie on https://www.facebook.com/angie.wilt.1  Follow The Dog Door on instagram - https://www.instagram.com/thedogdoor/  Visit The Dog Door Website  - https://www.dogdoorcanineservices.com/

6 tips to settle your rescue dog - especially if they're fearful
2021/11/06
Thinking about adopting a rescue dog? Or have you recently adopted one and are struggling to help him or her get settled? You’re not alone! It can be really stressful for dogs and their human companions in the first few days, weeks and even months.  When I brought my dog Rosa home, we had a really tough start. She was too scared to come inside the apartment and slept by the front door for the first few days. She was scared of pretty much everything including cars, people, other dogs. This is quite common with rescue dogs.  But fast forward 6 months later and she’s as happy as can be!  So in this episode, I want to share some of the lessons I learnt and the 6 things you must do to help make the transition as easy as possible for your new furry friend.  www.rescuetails.co

Why your expectations about adopting a dog are probably wrong (here's the reality)
2021/11/01
The truth is, not all adoption stories have a happy ending. Many dogs are sent back to the shelter because of behaviour challenges. It’s estimated that 1 in 5 dogs end up back in shelters every year. And we all know that behind every statistic is a heartbreaking story. This is the problem Emma Jane-Lee is working tirelessly to help solve. Emma is a teacher, writer, assessment consultant and canine behaviourist based in France. In this episode I chat with her about what drives people to adopt a dog and why you shouldn’t judge a dog’s behaviour when it’s in the shelter. Emma offers behavioural support to people who have adopted dogs from her and other local shelters. Sometimes her work involves dogs who owners want to keep instead of surrender their dog but they have run out of options. She specialises in working with dogs who have a history of aggression and bites. Emma is a member of the Pet Professional Guild and is a certified shelter dog behaviour consultant by the International Association of Animal Behaviour Consultants. She’s written a book to help dog trainers. It’s available on Amazon as a digital download and also a paperback. Client-Centred Dog Training is aimed at helping dog trainers get the most out of their human clients. Links we love 🧡 Read Emma’s fantastic blog on her website  Check out her Facebook Page  Resources to help you with Separation Anxiety  Julie Naismith: Be Right Back!  Julie also has a network of SA specialists called SA Pro where people can find trainers who use her Sub-Threshold Training.   Malena Di Martini: Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs. Malena also has a network of certified dog trainers through her own certification programme, most of whom work virtually.  James O'Heare: Canine Separation Anxiety Workbook.  A useful study from de Assis et al (overseen by Daniel Mills)  To find out more about Rescue Tails, visit www.rescuetails.co
