Take Care of You: Through Grief, Loss, and Healing with Erin Mascaro
2026/09/09
In this deeply personal interview, alongside my guest Erin Mascaro, we dive into grief, mental health, loss, and the long work of healing. Erin shares how repeated family tragedies reshaped her life, her values, and the mission behind Sounds of Silence. The conversation centers on hope, connection, and why asking for help, slowing down, and taking care of yourself matters in everyday life. In this episode, Erin explains the meaning of her energy and presence: intentional, determined, goal-oriented, and approachable, even when she can come across as intense. She shares how her sister Lisa’s postpartum depression opened the family’s eyes to the silence and stigma around maternal mental health in the early 2000s. Erin walks through the origin of Sounds of Silence and how a simple resource referral led to a foundation, a run, and years of community support. She describes the impact of losing Lisa in 2014, her father in 2017, and another sister in 2018, and how each loss changed her relationship to grief. Erin reflects on how mental illness can be hidden, misunderstood, and difficult for families to manage without professional support. She talks about the importance of hard conversations, in-person connection, and creating spaces where people feel seen and heard. She explains why the real work starts at home: modeling emotional health, unlearning harmful patterns, and teaching children how to care for themselves. Erin shares the practices that help her stay grounded, including daily movement, sunrise rituals, nourishment, boundaries, and keeping a small circle of trustworthy people. She discusses how grief changed her perspective on time, priorities, social events, and the urge to do everything for everyone. Her central message is that people are worth the work, worth the help, and worth slowing down for. Sounds of Silence Foundation Instagram @sounds_of_silence_run

Vandalism vs Art : how creativity can provoke, disrupt, and challenge what society labels as “good.”
2026/06/26
Vandalism explores the blurred line between destruction and expression, asking: when does art become vandalism, and who gets to decide? This episode unpacks how creativity can provoke, disrupt, and challenge what society labels as “good.” This conversation encourages us to reflect on the rules we inherit, the approval we seek, and the ways we limit ourselves based on what others might think. If art can question the status quo, maybe we can too. This episode is an invitation to examine what you’re no longer willing to accept, what you’re ready to stop asking permission for, and how to strengthen your “zero f’s given” muscle in your own life.

2026/04/18
Most of us feel overwhelmed by the constant noise and chaos of modern life—and what if the simple act of helping others could be the antidote? In this episode, we explore how small actions, like reaching out or volunteering in your own community, can restore your sense of purpose and lower anxiety—even when the world feels like it’s burning around you. Through the inspiring story of a man saving a baby pangolin in South Africa, you'll discover how contribution and meaning are deeply linked to our mental well-being. You'll learn how to identify your own "corner"—the small yet meaningful actions that can brighten your day and those around you. We dive into the idea of increasing your "utility quotient," and how choosing to help, even in tiny ways, can pull you out of hopelessness and into a mindset of agency and purpose. Plus, a journal prompt inspired by the wise words from The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse encourages self-reflection on how you can create ripple effects of kindness in your life. In Good Company: Choosing Curiosity over Comfort & Building a Life of Travel, Community, and Adventure with Meg Rowe
2026/03/03
Most of us move through life on autopilot—choosing stability, staying comfortable, telling ourselves “maybe someday.” This conversation with Meg is a reminder that someday is a decision. After 11 years in the corporate world, Meg chose freedom over predictability and built a life rooted in travel, community, and adventure. From a childhood in the remote wilderness of Idaho and Missouri to the fast pace of New York City, she shares how each chapter shaped her resilience, independence, and deep love of people and place. We talk about what it really looks like to pivot—traveling with kids, dreaming about Portugal in 2027, falling in love with a Bavarian village in the Alps—and how to stop waiting for perfect conditions. Meg offers practical tips for exploring Europe on a budget, building community wherever you land, and prioritizing what she calls “first life” moments instead of putting everything off for later. This episode is about choosing curiosity over comfort. About letting travel stretch you. About trusting that change might actually be the doorway to the life you’ve been craving. If you’ve been feeling the pull to shake things up—even just a little—this one’s for you.

The Pen Is Mightier Than the Keyboard: Learning, Time Management & College Success- with Professor Ginny Horan
2024/08/16
In this episode Prof.Virginia Horan and I  discuss the changing landscape of education, focusing on the impact of technology, parental involvement, and mental health on students. We talk about the importance of a holistic approach to education, self-care, and time management, and the value of traditional methods combined with technology. We also highlight the need for personal growth, resilience, and self-esteem.  Professor Ginny Horan has been teaching Communication since 1991 as a member of the full-time faculty at Suffolk County Community College. After researching the decline in student success, she discovered many Gen Z students lack time management skills, so five years ago she created a paper planner that teaches time management AND offers emotional and academic support through weekly video tutorials that match printed tips in the planner itself. Episode Takeaways  All technology is not necessarily good technology when it comes to learning  More students today in college are ambivalent and unsure  Flashcards, time management, and note-taking are still essential  Parents are also heavily managing their child’s high school life which makes learning time management more challenging Every college has tutoring, test anxiety workshops, time management workshops, and mental health resources The Centered Student planners have a QR code to provide emotional support and tips throughout the first year of college Writing by hand slows students down, to think about what they are actually writing When you are feeling overwhelmed try to HALT  and assess if you are Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired  When you don’t feel in control you feel anxious, if you feel in control you’ll feel a little less anxious Parents you have to let your kids fail Guided meditations are a perfect way to ease instant anxiety  Maybe we could all  Check out the website for more resources: www.thecenteredstudentplanner.com  Follow along on Instagram too :) @thecenteredstudent
