Ep 427: Can I Afford to Start or Grow My Microschool?! Before You Hire a Teacher, Move Buildings, Add Students or Quit Your Job...Ask THIS First
2026/10/20
You are about to start. Maybe you are doing this microschool building for the first time. You may have already started and You want to hire the teacher. Move into the bigger building. Add another classroom. Grow enrollment. Maybe even quit your job and finally run your microschool full-time. But before you say YES to the next big thing, there's one question every microschool founder needs to ask: Can the numbers actually support what I want to build? Don't worry—this is NOT a boring finance lesson. 😂 In this episode of our Build Next Year Now series, we're talking about the money behind the dream: when growth makes sense, why being full doesn't automatically mean you should expand, how enrollment connects to hiring and facilities, and why major decisions shouldn't be made from overwhelm or excitement alone. The goal isn't to become a financial expert. It's to understand your microschool well enough to ask: What needs to be true financially for me to say YES? Because we don't want to kill the dream with numbers. We want to use the numbers to figure out how to make the dream possible. This week: FUND IT. Next week: BUILD IT TO RUN. Ep 425: How to Start & Plan a Microschool for Next School Year: Work Backwards From Opening Day to Enrollment, Marketing, Tuition, Staffing & Your Microschool Calendar Plan
2026/10/19
You want to start a microschool. You have the idea. You've done the research. You've listened to the podcasts. You've saved the posts. But when are you actually going to OPEN it? Or maybe your microschool is already open—but next year you want to grow enrollment, hire a teacher, move into a new facility, add another grade, change tuition, expand your programs, or finally create systems that make your school sustainable. It's time to stop saying “someday” and put dates on the dream. In Episode 425 of the ReDream Education Podcast, we're kicking off October's BUILD NEXT YEAR NOW series with PLAN IT—a practical microschool planning session designed to help you stop endlessly researching and start reverse-engineering the school you actually want to build. Grab your calendar before you listen. You're going to need it. Because planning a microschool isn't spending six months scrolling Facebook groups, researching curriculum, comparing websites, listening to podcasts and saving ideas. Planning requires deadlines. And today we're creating them. 📅 Start With Opening Day—and Work BACKWARDS First, we're choosing an actual start date. Not “next fall.” Not “hopefully August.” A DATE. Then we're working backward. The framework for this episode starts with where you want to be in August and reverse-engineers through enrollment, marketing, open houses, applications, pricing, capacity, staffing, facilities, your financial model—and finally, what needs to happen TODAY. ReDream Education — October 202… Whether you're opening your first microschool or planning the next stage of an existing school, we'll also get underneath the logistics. What are you actually building? Are you starting a microschool while still working another job? Do you eventually need to resign from teaching or another career? Are you currently homeschooling and wondering whether what you're doing with your own children could become a microschool or homeschool hybrid? Are you trying to grow your current enrollment? Stay intentionally small? Hire? Move? Add grades? Change tuition? Open another location? And underneath all of that: What are you afraid of? What do you really want? What questions keep circling in your mind? What keeps you awake at night? Those questions matter because sometimes we spend months researching around a decision we're actually afraid to make. This episode helps you move from “I'm thinking about starting a microschool” to “Here's what I'm building, here's when it starts, and here's what has to happen between now and then.” 🚨 Meet Your D-Day: Your DONE DAY We're also introducing a simple planning concept: D-Day = DONE DAY. Instead of writing “work on tuition,” decide when your tuition structure will be DONE. Instead of “research curriculum,” decide when your curriculum decision will be DONE. Instead of “work on website,” decide when your website needs to be DONE. Instead of researching indefinitely, we're putting boundaries around research and deadlines around decisions. You'll identify five major D-Days for your microschool: 1. Your Offer Is Done — grades, schedule, programs, capacity, tuition, fees, educational philosophy and the families you were created to serve. 2. Your Family Information Is Done — including two BIG non-negotiables: your Microschool Introductory Packet and your Microschool Family Handbook. 3. Your Enrollment System Is Done — applications, tours, information sessions, open houses, enrollment materials and the process that takes a family from interested to enrolled. 4. Your Marketing Begins — website, social media, email, community awareness, partnerships and consistent visibility BEFORE you desperately need students. 5. Your Financial & Operational Plan Is Done — capacity, tuition, projected revenue, staffing, payroll, facilities, hiring triggers and the numbers that determine whether your plan can actually work. 🅰️ This Is Where ATTRACT Begins This episode also takes us deeper into the A of ReDream Education's A–B–C Microschool Founder Path: ATTRACT. Before families can enroll, they need to understand what you've built. Your Introductory Packet helps clearly communicate your microschool's offer to interested families and gives them the bigger picture of your school. ReDream Education — October 202… And your Microschool Family Handbook establishes the policies, expectations and agreements underneath the family-school relationship. The October strategy identifies these two resources as the featured foundational tools for the PLAN IT stage. ReDream Education — October 202… These aren't documents you scramble to create after families start enrolling. They need D-Days, too. 🔥 Stop Researching Your Dream and Start Building It You don't need to know everything today. You don't need to have every curriculum selected. You don't need to have every social media post planned. You don't need every answer. But you DO need to know: Where am I going? When am I getting there? And what has to be DONE before the next thing can happen? By the end of this episode, you'll have a start date, five major D-Days and the beginnings of a backwards-designed microschool launch or growth calendar. Because research without a deadline can go on forever. Put a date on the dream. This week we PLAN IT. Next week, we FILL IT as we break down microschool open enrollment, marketing, open houses, applications and the system that moves families through PREPARE → ATTRACT → CONVERT → FOLLOW UP. Ep 426: Let's Talk Enrollment! How to Market Your Microschool, Find Families, Fill Your Seats & Build an Open Enrollment Strategy That Actually Works
2026/10/13
What if you build the microschool… and nobody enrolls? It's one of the biggest fears microschool founders have. You can create an incredible program, choose the curriculum, find the space, build the website—and still wonder: Where are the families going to come from? In this episode of our Build Next Year Now series, we're talking about how to FILL IT. You'll learn how to think about microschool enrollment as more than an application date. We're breaking it into four simple parts: PREPARE → ATTRACT → CONVERT → FOLLOW UP How will families find you? What happens when they're interested? How do you move them from curious to applying? And what happens to all those families who inquire, tour, attend an open house—or almost enroll? Because open enrollment isn't a date. It's a system. If you're starting a microschool, growing a homeschool hybrid, preparing for open enrollment, or wondering how to get more students into your school, this episode is for you. Don't wait until you need students to start looking for them. Build next year's enrollment now. Build Your Microschool for Next Year NOW: How to Plan, Grow, Market, Enroll, Fund & Scale a Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid + The A–B–C Microschool Founder Path
2026/10/01
What are you building next year—and what needs to happen NOW to make it possible? If you are starting a microschool, growing a microschool, running a homeschool hybrid, increasing enrollment, hiring teachers, looking for a new facility, adding programs, changing tuition, or simply trying to create a school that doesn't depend on you for absolutely everything, this episode is for you. October at ReDream Education is officially BUILD NEXT YEAR NOW. And yes—we know. You just started this school year. 😂 But one of the biggest lessons I've learned while building and growing Lighthouse Learning is that January is too late to start dreaming about August. Next year's enrollment starts before you need next year's students. Next year's staffing decisions are connected to the enrollment and financial numbers you're looking at today. Next year's growth requires systems you may need to begin creating months before you actually need them. And once November and December arrive? The holidays get LOUD. That's why we're using October to stop, look ahead and ask: What are you building next? ReDream Education — October 202… In this special October kickoff episode, Makenzie introduces ReDream Education's new A–B–C Microschool Founder Path: ATTRACT → BUILD → COLLABORATE. A — ATTRACT: Learn how to attract the families your microschool was created to serve through clear messaging, authentic microschool marketing, open houses, introductory materials, visibility and an intentional enrollment process. B — BUILD: Once families enroll, it's time to build the foundation underneath your microschool—including policies, finances, curriculum, community, planning, legal foundations and the systems that turn enrollment into a sustainable school. C — COLLABORATE: You shouldn't have to solve every microschool challenge by yourself. Through Microschool Masterminds, founders can move beyond simply consuming information into implementation, accountability, problem-solving, professional development, leadership development and ongoing collaboration. ReDream Education — October 202… 🔓 THE MICROSCHOOL MASTERMIND VAULT IS OPENING! We're also making a BIG announcement. Over the years, ReDream Education has created resources that have lived inside courses, Microschool Masterminds or have only been available during certain seasons. We're opening the Vault. Beginning next week and through December 31, microschool founders will have access to resources created from the real work of building, marketing, enrolling and growing Lighthouse Learning. ReDream Education — October 202… We're unlocking resources including the Introductory Packet, Microschool Marketing Blueprint, Open House Playbook, Microschool Family Handbook, Building Your Microschool Community Bundle, Conduct a Financial Review: For Teacherpreneurs, Finding Curriculum Clarity Workbook, Fiscal Sponsorship Agreement Template, How to Create the Perfect Planning Day, and Legal Clarity for Beginners: A Founder's Guide. ReDream Education — October 202… And throughout October, we're going much deeper. We'll talk about how to PLAN IT by reverse-engineering the school you want next August. We'll FILL IT by breaking down microschool open enrollment, marketing, open houses, applications, follow-up and how families actually move from discovering your school to enrolling. We'll FUND IT by looking at enrollment, classroom capacity, available seats, revenue, staffing, payroll, facilities and margins—because growth decisions need to work financially. And we'll BUILD IT TO RUN by talking about hiring, SOPs, organizational structure, leadership, delegation, onboarding, communication systems, dashboards and the systems that allow a microschool to grow without everything depending on its founder. ReDream Education — October 202… ReDream Education — October 202… ReDream Education — October 202… ReDream Education — October 202… If you've been searching for how to start a microschool, how to grow a microschool, how to get more students, how to market a microschool, how to plan microschool enrollment, how to hire microschool teachers, how to price microschool tuition, how to fund a microschool, or how to turn your microschool into a sustainable business, you're going to want to follow this entire October series. Because this month isn't just about dreaming bigger. It's about implementing. Visit ReDreamEducation.com to explore the A–B–C Microschool Founder resources and learn more about Microschool Masterminds. You've dreamed it. Now let's build it.
Ep 424: How to Lead, Grow & Scale a Microschool Without Burning Out: Leadership, Hiring Teachers, Delegation, Systems, Building a Team & Growing Your School Beyond the Founder
2026/09/29
What happens when the microschool you dreamed about actually starts to grow—and suddenly everything depends on you? When you first start a microschool, homeschool hybrid, private learning program, or alternative school, doing everything yourself can almost feel necessary. You're the founder. The teacher. The admissions director. The marketer. The parent communicator. The curriculum coordinator. The scheduler. The problem solver. The substitute. And sometimes even the person taking out the trash at the end of the day. But there comes a point when the very thing that helped you start your microschool can prevent you from growing it: Everything depends on you. In the final episode of my September series, What It Really Takes to Build a Microschool, we're talking about the fifth and final piece of my Lighthouse Framework: LEADING — The Lightkeeper. Throughout this series, we've explored: DREAM — The Foundation Why your microschool exists and what you're actually trying to build. TIME — The Structure How founders manage priorities, productivity, delegation, their calendars, and their lives while building a school. MONEY — The Fuel Tuition, budgeting, payroll, profit, cash flow, reserves, grants, fundraising and creating a financially sustainable microschool. MARKETING — The Light How families discover your school, understand what makes it different, trust your model and ultimately enroll. And now: LEADING — The Lightkeeper. Because eventually, building a sustainable microschool requires something more than being willing to work harder. It requires becoming the leader your next stage of growth needs. In this episode, we're talking about the transition from founder → doer → manager → leader, and why the way you lead a microschool with six students cannot necessarily be the way you lead one with 20, 50, 100—or multiple locations. If your enrollment doubled next August, what would break? Would admissions break? Billing? Parent communication? Teacher onboarding? Scheduling? Curriculum? Operations? Your leadership structure? Your calendar? Or would you break? Because there is a difference between building a school that you can keep carrying and building an organization capable of carrying the mission with you. In this episode, I'll share lessons from my own journey building Lighthouse Learning—from six students in my living room to a growing microschool serving many more children, families, teachers and programs. And one of the biggest lessons has been this: Just because you CAN carry everything doesn't mean you're supposed to keep carrying everything. ----more---- Microschool Masterminds: skool.com/microschool-masterminds Every Thursday from 12-1 pm (EST), join Makenzie Oliver, microschool founder, VELA connector, and instructional coach, along with other founders, parents, and dreamers, as we connect, inspire, and progress through the challenges and celebrations of starting, running, and growing a microschool! Ep 423: How to Market Your Microschool & Grow Enrollment How to Attract Families, Get More Students, Build Your Brand & Fill Your Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid
2026/09/22
You built the microschool. But do the families who need you know you exist? One of the biggest mistakes microschool founders, homeschool hybrid leaders, and education entrepreneurs make is treating marketing like something they only need when enrollment is low. You post when you need students. You promote an open house. You scramble to fill a few seats. Then school starts—and marketing stops. But the family who enrolls six months from now may already be watching you today. In Part 4 of my “What It Really Takes to Build a Microschool” series, we're talking about MARKETING—the Light in the Lighthouse Framework. Because you can build an incredible school with passionate teachers, small classes, personalized learning, hands-on experiences and a beautiful mission—but a family cannot choose a school they don't know exists. In this episode, I'm breaking down how to market a microschool or homeschool hybrid in a way that goes far beyond simply figuring out what to post on social media. We'll talk about how to: Identify the families you're actually trying to reach Turn your mission and educational philosophy into your marketing message Create content that shows families what makes your microschool different Use student learning, teacher stories, parent experiences and everyday school life as content Build trust with prospective families long before they're ready to enroll Create a simple microschool marketing and enrollment funnel Use testimonials, referrals, reviews and your current parent community Market your school consistently—even when enrollment is currently strong Move families from discovering your school → following → trusting → visiting → applying → enrolling Stop asking “What should I post today?” and start building an actual enrollment system I'm also sharing what this looks like inside Lighthouse Learning and why I believe your school itself should become one of your greatest marketing assets. You do not have to become an influencer. You don't need to dance on Instagram. And you don't need to shout louder than every other school in your community. But you do need to make it possible for the right families to see, understand and experience what you've built. In the Lighthouse Framework: DREAM is the Foundation. TIME is the Structure. MONEY is the Fuel. MARKETING is the Light. LEADING is the Lightkeeper. Your dream tells you what to build. Your marketing helps the people who need it find it. You built the lighthouse. Now turn on the light—and don't turn it off just because school started. 🎧 This episode is for microschool founders, homeschool hybrid founders, private school leaders, teachers starting schools, education entrepreneurs, alternative education leaders, and anyone learning how to start, market, grow and financially sustain a microschool. Ep 422: The Money Behind Building a Microschool: How to Fund, Budget, Price Tuition, Make a Profit & Build a Financially Sustainable Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid
2026/09/15
How much money do you really need to start a microschool—and how do you build a microschool or homeschool hybrid that is financially sustainable enough to last? In this episode of the Re-Dream Education Podcast, we’re talking about one of the most important—and sometimes most uncomfortable—parts of starting, running, and growing a microschool: MONEY. Money is the fuel behind the dream. Whether you’re starting a microschool in your home with a handful of students or growing an established homeschool hybrid with teachers, payroll, facilities, curriculum, and nearly 100 students, understanding your numbers matters. I’m taking you behind the scenes of my own journey—from starting Lighthouse Learning with just six students in my living room to building a growing microschool serving nearly 100 students. And I’m sharing the financial lessons I’ve had to learn along the way. We’re talking about what it really costs to start and operate a microschool, how to price tuition, understanding revenue versus profit, budgeting, payroll, cash flow, reserves, enrollment targets, founder compensation, the Profit First method, fundraising, grants, and why we eventually created a nonprofit foundation to help expand the mission beyond what tuition alone could support. Because more students don't automatically mean more profit. More revenue doesn't necessarily mean more money in the bank. And a growing school isn't automatically a financially sustainable school. If you're a microschool founder, homeschool hybrid leader, education entrepreneur, private school founder, or someone dreaming about starting your own school, you need to know your numbers. What is your monthly revenue? What are your true operating expenses? What does payroll cost? How many students do you need to break even? How much cash do you have available? What should you keep in reserves? What does your business need to eventually provide for you personally? And what happens financially when your school grows from 6 students to 20…to 50…to 100? We’ll also talk about the reality many women entrepreneurs face when starting businesses with limited capital—and why being passionate about your educational mission cannot mean remaining financially unaware. You do NOT have to be wealthy to start a microschool. But you do have to learn how to steward the money that comes through it. Your mission doesn't excuse you from learning money. Your mission gives you a reason to learn it. This is Episode 3 of our September series: The Real Work Behind Building & Growing Your Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid. Our Lighthouse Framework continues: DREAM is the foundation. TIME is the structure. MONEY is the fuel. MARKETING is the light. LEADING is the lightkeeper. If you want to go beyond listening and actually work through the numbers behind your school, join us inside Microschool Masterminds. Each week, we take these conversations deeper with practical tools, templates, resources, founder conversations, and strategies designed to help you dream, build, grow, and sustain your microschool. Because starting a microschool takes a dream. Building one takes something more. Dream it. Build it. Sustain it. Lead it. Ep 421: How to Manage Your Time as a Microschool Founder: Productivity, Priorities, Delegation & Building a School Without Burning Out
2026/09/08
How do you manage your time when you're starting, running, and growing a microschool or homeschool hybrid program—and everything feels important? Welcome to Episode 2 of The Real Work Behind Building a Microschool, a podcast series for microschool founders, homeschool hybrid leaders, education entrepreneurs, school owners, and anyone working to build a more personalized and sustainable alternative to traditional education. In Episode 1, we went back to the foundation: the dream. But a dream requires something from you. It requires your time. And if you're a microschool founder, you've probably discovered that your school will take every hour you're willing to give it. There are students who need you. Teachers who need support. Parents who need answers. Enrollment inquiries waiting for responses. Curriculum decisions. Payroll. Marketing. Emails. Meetings. Events. Finances. Supplies. Scheduling. Problems to solve. Programs to create. And then there's the actual work of growing the school. So how do you decide what deserves your time? In this episode, we're talking about time management for microschool founders, school leaders, and education entrepreneurs—but not simply how to squeeze more tasks into an already overloaded calendar. We're asking a bigger question: Does the way you're spending your time actually support the school—and the life—you are trying to build? We'll explore the difference between being the dreamer, doer, and leader inside your microschool and why founders can easily become trapped doing work that someone else could eventually own. We'll talk about identifying the work that actually requires you, creating priorities when everything feels urgent, protecting time for strategic thinking and innovation, delegating responsibilities, developing weekly rhythms, building repeatable school systems, and getting out of constant reactive mode. Because one of the biggest challenges of starting a microschool isn't coming up with ideas. It's creating enough capacity to actually build them. We'll also talk about microschool founder burnout and work-life balance—because building an innovative school shouldn't require sacrificing every other part of your life. Your family matters. Your health matters. Your relationships matter. Your creativity matters. Your rest matters. And your ability to step away from your school sometimes may actually be one of the greatest indicators that you're building something sustainable. If you're searching for how to start a microschool, how to run a microschool, microschool time management, school leadership strategies, founder productivity, education entrepreneurship, homeschool hybrid leadership, delegation for school leaders, work-life balance for entrepreneurs, or how to prevent founder burnout, this episode will help you think differently about your most limited resource: your time. Inside Microschool Masterminds, we're taking this conversation beyond the podcast. Every Wednesday, microschool founders and leaders come together to work through the real challenges behind building, growing, and sustaining their schools. Inside our Skool community, you'll also find practical tools, templates, worksheets, and resources designed around the Lighthouse Framework: Dream, Time, Money, Marketing, and Leadership. Because your dream needs your time. It just shouldn't get all of it. The goal isn't to figure out how to do everything. The goal is to become intentional about what only you should be doing, build systems for everything else, and create a microschool that can eventually thrive without requiring you to personally hold every piece together. Dream it. Build it. Sustain it. Lead it. Ep 420: From Dream to Microschool: The Real Work Behind Creating and Sustaining A New Form of Education
2026/09/01
What does it really take to start, build, grow, and sustain a successful microschool, homeschool hybrid program, or alternative education program? In this first episode of our Series, "The Real Work Behind Building a Microschool or Homeschool Hybrid" we’re going back to where every microschool begins: the dream. I went quiet on the podcast for a while—but the dream didn’t go quiet. It kept growing. And as Lighthouse Learning grew, I began to understand something every microschool founder, homeschool hybrid leader, and education entrepreneur eventually discovers: dreaming and leading are two very different things—but you need both. Starting a microschool often begins with a powerful vision for education. You see what traditional education could do differently. You imagine smaller classes, personalized learning, hands-on education, stronger relationships, more freedom for teachers, deeper partnerships with parents, and a school experience intentionally designed around children. But then you actually build it. Suddenly, the dream is surrounded by enrollment, tuition, payroll, staffing, parent communication, curriculum, marketing, schedules, systems, policies, student needs, teacher leadership, and a thousand decisions nobody told you would come with starting your own school. And somewhere in the work of running the school, founders can stop dreaming. This episode is about finding your way back. We'll talk about why your educational vision is the foundation of your microschool, how to stay inspired while carrying the responsibilities of leadership, the difference between being the dreamer and becoming the leader, and why growing a sustainable microschool requires both. This is also the beginning of a five-part September series exploring the real work behind building and growing a microschool: Dream. Time. Money. Marketing. Leadership. Because a great microschool needs more than an innovative curriculum or a passionate founder. It needs a clear mission, sustainable business model, intentional time management, strong financial systems, consistent school marketing and enrollment strategies, effective leadership, healthy school culture, parent partnerships, great teachers, community connections, and systems that allow the vision to grow beyond one person. Whether you're researching how to start a microschool, currently running a microschool or homeschool hybrid, building a private learning program, learning pod, alternative school, or education business, or dreaming about creating a different kind of education for children, this series is for you. And we aren't just talking about the dream—we're bu----more----ilding it. Inside Microschool Masterminds, we meet every Wednesday to work through the real challenges of microschool ownership and leadership. Our Skool community includes practical templates, worksheets, tools, and resources for microschool business planning, time management, finances, marketing, enrollment, leadership, systems, and vision development. Your dream is the foundation. But if you want that dream to impact children, families, teachers, and communities for years to come, you have to learn how to build something strong enough to carry it. Let's re-dream education—and build the school we once wished existed. Ep 419: What Happened to Kindergarten? Why Play, Nature, Wonder, and Childhood Are Disappearing from Schools and How Microschools Can Create An Academically Excellent Learning Experience
2026/06/23
Many parents walk into a kindergarten classroom today and leave with a feeling they can't quite explain. The desks seem smaller. The expectations seem bigger. The play kitchens are gone. The dramatic play centers have disappeared. Children are spending more time on worksheets, assessments, and academic tasks than ever before. But is this what young children truly need? In this episode of ReDream Education, Makenzie Oliver explores a question that is on the minds of many parents, educators, and microschool leaders: What happened to kindergarten? As Lighthouse Learning Microschool redesigns its kindergarten program, Makenzie shares why the school is intentionally creating a magical, nature-based, child-centered learning environment complete with gardens, dramatic play, a loft, hands-on learning stations, outdoor experiences, and opportunities for wonder and exploration—while maintaining a strong commitment to high-quality academics and literacy instruction. In this conversation, you'll discover: Why many traditional kindergarten classrooms have shifted away from play-based learning What research says about how young children actually learn The difference between rigor and developmentally appropriate practice Why parents are increasingly seeking alternatives to standardized early childhood education How nature, movement, imagination, and play support literacy, math, executive functioning, and social-emotional development Why microschools have a unique opportunity to rethink the kindergarten experience How Lighthouse Learning is balancing individualized academic growth with a joyful childhood experience Why play is not the opposite of learning—it is one of the most powerful ways children learn Whether you're a parent searching for the right educational environment, a teacher passionate about early childhood education, or a microschool founder designing programs for young learners, this episode will challenge the assumption that more rigor always means better outcomes. Because children do not need less childhood in order to learn more. They need environments that honor how they were designed to learn. The future of kindergarten isn't choosing between play and academics. It's understanding that the best learning happens when those two things work together. Ep 418: Why Personalized Learning Is So Hard: How to Start Implementing as a Teacher, Leader, and Homeschool Parent (And Why Education Needs It More Than Ever)
2026/06/16
What if the biggest challenge in education isn't student ability—but the system itself? In this episode of ReDream Education, Makenzie Oliver explores why personalized learning has become one of the most talked-about ideas in education, yet remains one of the most difficult to implement successfully. For more than a century, schools have largely operated on an Industrial Revolution model designed for efficiency, standardization, and age-based progression. But today's students are more diverse than ever in their strengths, interests, learning needs, and readiness levels. So why are we still expecting every child to learn the same thing, at the same pace, on the same day? Makenzie unpacks: What personalized learning really means (and what it doesn't) The difference between personalization and differentiation Why traditional education systems struggle to individualize learning How teacher preparation programs often fail to equip educators for personalized instruction The myths surrounding personalized learning What school leaders, teachers, and curriculum providers need to understand The systems, structures, and mindset shifts required to make personalization possible How Lighthouse Learning's Walk-to-Learn model is helping students learn at their instructional level rather than simply by age or grade Whether you're a parent, educator, microschool founder, homeschool leader, or school administrator, this episode will challenge the way you think about teaching, learning, and what it truly means to meet students where they are. Because the future of education isn't about asking students to fit the system. It's about building systems that fit students. Ep 417: May Was a Whirlwind and Everything Is Changing: A Summer Reflection for Teachers, Parents, and Founders
2026/06/02
Have you ever found yourself standing between one season ending and another beginning, wondering how everything changed so quickly? That's exactly where I find myself right now. May has been a whirlwind. Between end-of-year celebrations, family visiting from out of town, preparing Lighthouse Learning for summer and a new school year, and watching my daughters step into new chapters of life, I've been reminded that transitions can be both beautiful and uncomfortable at the same time. One daughter is preparing for college. Another is heading into high school. As a mom, educator, and entrepreneur, I've experienced moments of excitement, gratitude, sadness, anticipation, and even uncertainty—all within the same season. In this episode, I'm sharing what I've learned about navigating transitions and why so many teachers, parents, microschool founders, homeschool families, and school leaders may be feeling overwhelmed right now. We'll talk about: Why transition often feels harder than we expect The emotional side of watching our children grow up How to navigate summer without feeling lost or overwhelmed The importance of reflecting before rushing into planning What to do when life is changing faster than you're ready for How educators and microschool leaders can prepare for a new season without burning out Why uncertainty is often a sign that growth is happening Whether you're ending a school year, preparing for summer, transitioning out of the classroom, launching a microschool, homeschooling your children, or simply experiencing a season of change, this episode is for you. My hope is that this conversation reminds you that you don't have to have every answer today. Sometimes the most important thing we can do is honor what is ending, embrace what is beginning, and trust ourselves enough to take the next right step. In This Episode You'll Learn: ✔ How to process major life transitions with confidence ✔ Why summer can feel emotionally overwhelming for parents and educators ✔ Practical ways to reflect before planning your next season ✔ How to embrace change without losing your peace ✔ Encouragement for teachers, homeschool parents, and microschool founders preparing for a new school year ----more---- Microschool Masterminds: skool.com/microschool-masterminds Every Thursday from 12-1 pm (EST), join Makenzie Oliver, microschool founder, VELA connector, and instructional coach, along with other founders, parents, and dreamers, as we connect, inspire, and progress through the challenges and celebrations of starting, running, and growing a microschool! Ep 416: What Summer Reveals About Teachers, Families, Burnout & Modern Parenting: Reflecting and Preparing for Purpose During the Summer
2026/05/12
May is heavy. Parents are overwhelmed. Teachers are exhausted. Kids are overstimulated. And somehow, while trying to survive the end of the school year, families are also expected to magically prepare for summer. In this honest and deeply relatable episode, Makenzie Oliver unpacks what summer actually reveals about modern families, parenting, burnout, emotional exhaustion, screen time, overstimulation, and the hidden pressure both parents and teachers are carrying into the summer months. This is more than a conversation about camps and schedules. It is a deeper look into the emotional transition from the structure of the school year into the unstructured reality of summer break. In this episode, we discuss: Why “Maycember” feels so overwhelming for families and teachers The hidden emotional labor parents carry heading into summer Why kids often struggle emotionally during summer transitions Screen time, overstimulation, and independent play The pressure parents feel to create a “perfect” summer Why teachers often enter summer completely dysregulated and burned out How summer exposes family rhythms, routines, and stress points What children actually remember most about summer How to create a summer filled with connection, creativity, rest, and intentionality Whether you are a parent trying to prepare for summer break, a teacher recovering from burnout, a homeschool family planning your summer rhythm, or a microschool leader navigating the end of another school year, this episode will leave you feeling seen, encouraged, and inspired to move into summer with more peace and purpose. Because summer is not just a break. It is a transition season. And sometimes, it reveals more than we expected. Ep 415: The Core 4 Planning Strategy for Parents and Teachers to Plan Summer with Creativity, Camps, Community and Care without Stress
2026/05/05
If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now… you’re not alone. Welcome to Maycember—that end-of-school-year rush where everything feels like too much. The events, the deadlines, the emails, the emotions… and on top of it all, you’re trying to figure out how to plan summer for your kids without stress. In this episode, we’re diving into what parents and microschool leaders are really experiencing right now—end-of-school-year burnout, decision fatigue, and the pressure to create a summer that’s both fun and meaningful. Because let’s be honest… You don’t want your kids on screens all day. You don’t want them to lose everything they’ve learned. And you definitely don’t want to feel exhausted trying to “figure it all out.” So what does a successful summer actually look like? Makenzie shares a powerful personal story from her years as a teacher and mom—what started as carefree, magical summers with young kids slowly shifted into something different… a need for structure, connection, and purpose. And that’s where everything changed. In this episode, you’ll discover the Core Four for Summer Planning: ✔️ Camps (for structure and new experiences) ✔️ Creativity (to spark imagination and reduce screen time) ✔️ Community (because kids thrive in connection) ✔️ Care (support for parents balancing work, life, and everything in between ----more---- Microschool Masterminds: skool.com/microschool-masterminds Every Thursday from 12-1 pm (EST), join Makenzie Oliver, microschool founder, VELA connector, and instructional coach, along with other founders, parents, and dreamers, as we connect, inspire, and progress through the challenges and celebrations of starting, running, and growing a microschool! Ep 414: Why One-Size-Fits-All Reading Fails: How We Use Phonics, Data, and Flexible Grouping to Help Every Child Succeed
2026/04/28
What if reading instruction wasn’t based on grade level—but on what your child actually needs? In this episode, we break down how Lighthouse Learning Microschool uses a tailored, research-based approach to reading through phonics-based progression, intentional assessment, and our walk-to-learn model. Using the UFLI Foundations framework, we group students based on skill level rather than age, allowing each child to receive targeted instruction in phonics, reading, writing, and spelling at the level they are ready for. Every three weeks, we reassess and adjust groups, ensuring students are continually progressing and supported. We also share how our data wall helps us track growth, identify needs, and make informed instructional decisions, while allowing students to “test out” of phonics and move into higher-level comprehension groups when they are ready. Backed by the science of reading and structured literacy research, this approach supports stronger decoding skills, improved fluency, and deeper comprehension. If you’re a parent wondering how your child learns best, or a microschool leader looking to implement a more effective literacy model, this episode will give you a clear, practical look at how tailored education can transform outcomes for every learner.
