Larry Cohen on Partners, Postmortems and Playing Nice
2026/09/17
In the final episode of Should I Play or Should I Go?, Catherine talks with bridge legend, teacher and author Larry Cohen. Larry recalls almost giving up bridge at 14 after an upsetting experience at his second duplicate game, and explains why creating a welcoming environment has become such an important part of his approach to teaching and playing. He offers practical advice on handling an overcritical partner, resisting the urge to believe every postmortem you hear, and remembering that the person telling you what you did wrong may not actually be right. He also explains why berating a partner is not only unpleasant, but likely to make them play worse. And, as the series comes to a close, Catherine takes stock of what she has learned, reconsiders the comment that started all this, and asks what it means for the way she approaches bridge from here. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to: Kitty Muntz, Geoff Sadler, Victoria, David Adler and Joan Dziekanski. The Bridge Song at the end of the episode is by Ruvaan Malkani. Here are a few resources on keeping bridge enjoyable for everyone: World Bridge Federation: Laws of Duplicate Bridge Larry Cohen: 21 Rules of Being a Good Partner Karen Walker: Table Feel: A thoughtful look at the subtler side of behaviour at the bridge table. Kim Frazer on Confidence, Competition and the Voice in Your Head
2026/09/10
Should I Play or Should I Go? is a four-part mini-series about rudeness, rejection and confidence at the bridge table, created, produced and hosted by Catherine Harris. In episode 3, Australian bridge champion, Olympian and sports psychology author Kim Frazer joins Catherine to talk about confidence, self-talk and performing under pressure. They discuss playing against stronger opponents, learning to focus on what went right as well as what went wrong, setting realistic goals, dealing with disappointment, and what to do when somebody else’s judgment gets stuck in your head. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to Dick Kassar, Lucy Zhang, Barbara Raynor and James Southern. Kim is the author of Gaining the Mental Edge at Bridge. The book offers simple, practical techniques to improve your mental approach to the game, allowing you to enjoy your time at the bridge table even more. In episode two, English champion and psychotherapist Maggie Knottenbelt joins Catherine to talk about what happens when ego, judgment and self-doubt creep into the game. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to Jim Wallis, Mindy Fleder, Alan Davidson and Laura Ginnan. Andrew Mill on Mistakes, Progress and Other Inconveniences
2026/08/27
Should I Play or Should I Go? is a four-part mini-series about rudeness, rejection and confidence at the bridge table, created, produced and hosted by Catherine Harris. A few weeks ago, something was said at the bridge table that I couldn’t let go. I’ve experienced worse, so why couldn’t I shake it? In this first episode of Should I Play or Should I Go?, I talk to my longtime bridge teacher, Australian champion Andrew Mill, about confidence, criticism and the strange experience of trying to get better at something you love while becoming increasingly aware of how much you still have to learn. Plus, other bridge players share some memorable encounters of their own. Thanks to Daniel Lev, Nikki Hudak, Stephanie Culbertson, Lorraine Cable and Em Barbenel. Also, some time ago I wrote about taking bridge lessons with Andrew.
