Today on The Protectors Podcast, Mike and Mark are joined by NYPD Detective Daniel Alessandrino from the 2026 IAFCI Annual Training Conference in Nashville to explore why street gangs are expanding into fraud and scams. The attraction? Bigger profits, easier opportunities, and no need for a violent confrontation. From New York to communities across the country, Dan breaks down what he’s seeing, how investigators are fighting back, and the warning signs law enforcement and the public need to recognize. He also discusses the importance of strong working relationships with prosecutors in bringing these offenders to justice. The gangs are following the money, and that trail could lead straight to your wallet. The Protectors Podcast - New Hustles, Same Mission - Protecting You. GUEST CONTACT INFO:Det. What does card skimming look like from the other side? Michael Perez knows firsthand. Once involved in gas pump and ATM skimming, Michael combined his knowledge of electronics with an understanding of how to steal card information. Today, he’s putting that experience to a different use: helping others recognize and investigate the fraud he once committed. From the 2026 IAFCI Annual Training Conference in Nashville, hosts Mike and Mark sit down with Michael for a candid look inside the world of skimming. He shares how he operated, explains the technology behind the devices, and discusses the warning signs that consumers and investigators should watch for. Whether you’re filling up your tank, stopping at an ATM, or working a financial crime investigation, this conversation offers a perspective you don’t often get from someone who knows the skimming game firsthand and is now helping others stay one step ahead. Sometimes being a protector isn’t about running toward gunfire or putting someone in handcuffs. Sometimes, it’s simply about knowing what to say and being there when someone needs you most. In July, Metro Nashville Police Lieutenant Mike Hotz responded to Nashville’s Victory Memorial Bridge, where a man stood on the edge, ready to end his life. For nearly 45 minutes, Mike talked to him. He listened. He connected with him. And eventually, that man stepped away from the edge and into Mike’s arms. The body-camera footage of that moment quickly spread across the country, showing millions of people a very different side of what it means to wear the badge. While attending the 2026 IAFCI International Training Conference in Nashville, your hosts, Mike and Mark, had the opportunity to sit down with Lieutenant Mike Hotz and talk about that day, the experiences that prepared him for it, and the human connection that ultimately helped save a life.
