Cognitive dysfunction is a common manifestation of multiple sclerosis, and while there has been a lack of research into treatments to prevent cognitive problems, diagnosis and recognition are greater problems. Patients who develop cognitive dysfunction can have difficulty with processing speed, attention, executive functioning, social functioning, and memory. These symptoms can go unrecognized by the patient and their family, and unless specific screening for cognitive dysfunction is done, neurologists are not likely to recognize cognitive decline. In this activity, Dr. Patricia Coyle and Ms. Amy Perrin Ross discuss how patients are affected by cognitive dysfunction, and how best to screen for and diagnose common cognitive symptoms. The faculty also review the current state of the evidence for treating cognitive dysfunction with disease-modifying therapies.
