A hundred years ago, newspapers were completely unhinged. And here at hometown ghost stories we went digging for the scariest and most bizarre headlines we could find. Articles about ghostly cowboys still riding the range, a ghost wandering around looking for his own dismembered hand, and a parrot so aggressive and foul-mouthed it was blamed for being demonically possessed. There’s also a woman who ate herself to death. And no… not in the way you’re thinking. Oh, and somewhere in the middle of all that, there’s a very real headline calmly informing readers that Santa Claus is dead. These aren’t urban legends. After shooting a Westchester County officer during a traffic stop on the Saw Mill River Parkway, Alex Mengel, 30, stole the cop’s gun and disappeared in the victim’s patrol car. Twenty-four hours later he surfaced in Dutchess County, abducted a woman from an IBM parking lot, and vanished again in her white Toyota.
