Episode 143: Be Kind to Yourself (ft. Mark Wick)
2026/09/24
Mental health doesn’t necessarily mean mental “illness.” That said, it’s crucial to remember that our overall mental health affects everything we do.  “I was in the perfect profession to hide my illness. Doing nothing is an option, and I tried that option for many years, and I wouldn’t say it’s a good one.” Mark Wick is a veteran hockey coach and Mental Performance & Skills coach for various Division I hockey programs.  “There’s nothing stronger than peer support. I'm able to be much more present now and enjoy life because I got the help.” Mark provides first-hand insight on confronting mental health, doing the work, and the importance of remembering: you’re not alone and it’s safe to talk about it.  Go to www.faceitfoundation.org for more information on peer support, or call the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline that’s available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (both at no cost).
Episode 142: Intergenerational Kinship (ft. Evan Schroeder)
2026/09/17
We welcome in our dear friend and Brother Evan Schroeder. We do it up with deep thoughts about: introspection, meaning making, the gift of mentors, and of course, the much-needed structure in life that Masonry can provide.  “Stepping back, looking at life holistically, and the whole span of your life and saying ‘this is where I've been...this is what I'm doing now...what do I want to do?’ We only have so much time to do it. How do we make it meaningful?”  Evan is the Senior Warden at Trinity Lodge No. 282 (Duluth) and frequent contributor to the "Trinity Trowel."
Episode 141: 18:53 Working Tools Series – “Sapere Aude!”
2026/09/10
This episode title translates to “have the courage to use your understanding.”  This week we examine highlights of an article by Robert Burtt, who argues that while the Enlightenment preached pure reason, Freemasonry quietly built one of the most effective moral education systems ever devised by embracing ritual, emotion, and mystery.  “It can be rightfully said that ritual is what Freemasons ‘do.’ But how exactly does Masonry accomplish this goal of teaching?”  Robert E. Burtt is a Past Master of Harmony Lodge No. 429 in Pennsylvania, and his article was featured in Volume 79 of The Philalethes Society periodical.
Episode 140: The Beehive Initiative (ft. Bill Dehkes & Mark Meier)
2026/09/03
What binds us together? At the heart of Freemasonry is the pursuit of personal growth—but that journey isn’t meant to be taken alone. It asks us to look inward, support our Brothers, and recognize when someone may need a helping hand. Across Minnesota, we’re taking a deliberate look at internal lodge culture and men’s mental health: why it matters, why these conversations can be difficult, and how we can do a better job of looking out for ourselves and one another. This week, we sit down with Mark and Bill from the Face It Foundation to discuss the “Beehive Initiative,” a pilot program being rolled out across the state in partnership with Grand Lodge and Minnesota Masonic Charities. “We are asking men to have more rounded relationships with each other. Don’t tell me everything is ‘fine.’ Guys need to understand that it’s time to go to work on intentionally building our relationships with each other.” Men face difficult days, depression, anxiety, and struggles that aren’t always easy to talk about. This conversation explores what it means to strengthen the bonds between Brothers and create lodge cultures where asking for help isn’t a weakness—it’s part of what it means to truly show up for one another.
Episode 139: Know Thyself (ft. Ben Engel & Ben Youngdahl)
2026/08/27
This week, we welcome two newer members to the Masonic Lounge to hear what their Lodge experience has been like so far. Ben Youngdahl of Accacia No. 51 and Ben Engel of St. John’s No. 1 share fresh perspectives on finding a sense of belonging, creating balance in our lives, and the value of spending quality time together as friends and Brothers. Their experiences offer a candid look at what draws newer members to Freemasonry—and what keeps them coming back. “I cannot imagine my life without those guys. Freemasonry has reminded me that we are dependent on each other...we need each other...we need community. We need to feel as though we can depend on someone and that someone can depend on us.”
Episode 138: Charity Isn’t Loud (ft. Todd Mayer)
2026/08/20
Why is charitable giving so important to us? Giving back and serving those in need is an essential part of putting the principles of Freemasonry into action. This week, we sit down with Todd Mayer to explore the pursuit of something greater than yourself—and the importance of stepping away from our electronic devices to do real things in the world with real people. “Charity is a tangible idea...it’s a tangible way for you to tell other people why you do what you do.” We also discuss how service and charitable events can bring a lodge together, create a meaningful identity, and make a real difference in the community. “The lodges that have successful events know how it’s unified their lodge, and how it’s been a signature to their lodge, and how it’s helped out their community.” Todd Mayer is a member of Anoka Lodge No. 30 and currently serves as District Deputy for the Grand Lodge of Minnesota.
Episode 137: 18:53 Working Tools Series - Empty Seats
2026/08/13
Each empty seat in a lodge room tells a story, if we are willing to see it.  “Freemasonry has always been about caring for each other, and an absent Brother still can be living our Masonic values at home, at work, and in his community, quietly striving to be a better man.” This week we reflect on an article by Bob Weatherford, Regional Membership Manager of the Scottish Rite, Southern Jurisdiction.  Absence rarely comes without cause.  “We should hesitate to judge a Brother’s choices when we were not aware of the options that were in front of him to make those decisions.”  “What About Those Empty Seats?” was featured in the March/April 2026 Scottish Rite Journal.
Episode 136: Dig Deeper (ft. Drew Evenson)
2026/08/06
"Nothing's ever as hard as you think, it's just what you're willing to do to get there." This week, we're joined by cancer warrior Drew Evenson for an inspiring conversation about resilience, gratitude, and the power of community. Diagnosed with cancer at just 17 years old, Drew reflects on the life-changing care he received at Masonic Children's Hospital and the unwavering support of his family, friends, and medical team. His story is a powerful reminder that no one overcomes life's greatest challenges alone. "The best part about my story is what people did to support me. I got past it, and now it's my turn to fight for those who can't fight for themselves." In addition to sharing his personal journey, Drew discusses his role with the University of Minnesota men's basketball program, where he serves as Team Manager, helping support daily operations, film analysis, and player development.
Episode 135: Distilling Wisdom (ft. Dr. Jim Rice)
2026/07/30
Artificial intelligence is reshaping nearly every aspect of our lives—but what if it could help detect dementia before symptoms appear? This week, we're honored to welcome Dr. Jim Rice to the Masonic Lounge for a fascinating conversation that explores the intersection of AI, healthy aging, neuroscience, and quantum computing. Together, we discuss how emerging technologies are helping researchers pursue earlier detection of cognitive decline and what that could mean for patients, families, and caregivers. "At the heart of AI, it's doing deep dives into large amounts of data in order to extract and distill wisdom that can then be applied to do a better diagnosis of care and enhance collaboration between caregivers." Beyond technology, our conversation explores the importance of mentorship, the role of trust and transparency, and why every stage of life requires care, connection, and community. Dr. Jim Rice is an internationally recognized authority on healthcare policy, governance, and strategy development. He also served as the founding board chairman of Crescent Cove, helping establish one of the nation's leading pediatric palliative care homes.
Episode 134: “The Change” (ft. Dr. Laura Mayer)
2026/07/23
This week, we’re taking on a challenging topic—one that many men haven’t been given much guidance on how to navigate. As we pursue the Masonic goal of becoming better versions of ourselves, how can we better support our wives, partners, and female friends through perimenopause? Dr. Laura Mayer joins us to share practical wisdom, valuable insights, and actionable ideas for showing up in ways that help the women in our lives thrive. Together, we decode the “mystery” symptoms, break down conversational taboos, and provide men with a practical playbook for becoming more informed, empathetic, and supportive partners. Grab a pen and paper—Dr. Mayer brings tremendous perspective to an important conversation that every man should be prepared to have.

Episode 132: What Happens Next? (ft. Mike Sanford)
2026/07/09
Michael Sanford is a product development specialist, next-generation data center expert, Freemason, and family man.  Today we get to go through some of his professional background, life & lodge perspective, and the opportunity ahead of us within the overall Masonic experience.  “I think that if more of us were to explore that next level down…it furthers the bond that we have as Brothers. If we truly understand what's in that ritual, what we agreed to, what we signed up for, it's quite impactful.” Expect to learn the “why” behind the importance of asking “who are my neighbors,” spending time learning the actual meaning behind all the words we memorize and repeat as Masons, that it’s okay to ask for help when needed, the pursuit of personal growth, the rush of data centers springing up, and much much more…

Episode 130: 18:53 Working Tools Series - American Civic Life
2026/06/25
Throughout history, Masonic publications and early newspaper accounts have reflected a lasting public curiosity about the relationship between Freemasonry and government. In this episode, we explore the research of Masonic historian Chris Ruli, whose work invites us to reconsider the stories, assumptions, and myths that surround the Craft’s role in American history. As we approach the semiquincentennial year, there’s an opportunity to examine both the criticisms and the praise often associated with Freemasonry — and to consider whether the full impact of its tradition of public service has yet to be fully understood. Chris Ruli serves as the Assistant Grand Historian of the Supreme Council, 33°, A.A.S.R., Southern Jurisdiction.
