Episode 54: 3 Rules to Keep Your Car Wash's Team Productive on Slow Days
2026/10/26
3 Rules to Keep Your Car Wash Team Productive on Slow Days It's two o'clock on a Tuesday. Nobody's in line, and three of your team are leaning on the vacuum arch scrolling their phones. When I asked car wash operators what the biggest thing on their plate was, at least half of them said the same thing: keeping their team productive. One operator, ten years in, said complacency is his hardest problem now that volume is down. In this episode, Josh Taylor, CMO at OptSpot, shares three rules to fix it. Do, Say, Why: 1. Do. Build a slow-tunnel list. Five things or fewer, posted where everyone can see it, with customers at the top. 2. Say. Give your team the exact words. "Your car looks great!" and "Thanks for coming in today." 3. Why. Say what your wash is trying to do in one sentence, and say it until your team can say it back. Plus: why Disney trains its custodians to paint Mickey Mouse on the pavement with a broom and water, and the test that tells you whether your team actually knows what you want. Your assignment: Ask five of your people what your car wash is trying to do. If you get five different answers, you haven't said it clearly enough yet. Comment below: What's on your slow-tunnel list? Episode 53: Watch This Before You Raise Your Prices
2026/10/19
Most price increase letters make the same two mistakes. They charge more for the exact same wash, and they tell the story like the wash is the victim. Episode 3 is still our most-played episode ever. This is part two: how to raise your prices so your members feel like they got an upgrade. In this episode: • The first rule of a price increase: if you're going to charge more, give more • Upgrades members will notice every visit, and why they should start before the new price does • Why you shouldn't text retail customers about a price increase • Should you grandfather members in forever? I say no. • The words that turn your wash into the victim, and what to say instead • A real price increase letter, taken apart and rewritten • Why 70% of the members who clicked a cancel link went ahead and canceled • The "See what's new" landing page that keeps members from canceling What's one upgrade you could add that your members would notice every single visit? Tell me in the comments. I read every one. Missed Episode 3? Start there: https://youtu.be/UyimQUg_UYw Want the full system? Levi and I wrote The Five Funnels to Freedom. Episode 52: A 25-Year Car Wash Owner Told Me I Was Wrong
2026/10/12
A car wash owner with three washes and 25 years in the business called to tell me I was wrong about pitching memberships at the pay station. A few minutes into that call, I realized he wasn't misquoting me. He was repeating me. So in this episode, I set the record straight. You don't have to choose between pitching memberships and collecting phone numbers. Getting the phone number is the floor. The pitch is the ceiling. Whether you pitch is up to you. Letting a customer drive off without their number shouldn't be. In this episode: Why "don't propose on the first date" sent the wrong message, and the line I should've usedHow a 25-year operator keeps members around 24 months with about 85% phone captureThe month most new members disappear, from data across 50 car washesWhat one more visit before the first recharge does to your retentionWhy membership conversion is at an all-time high while churn keeps climbingFour things to do at your wash this week Want the full system? Episode 51: How to Get More Customers to Choose Your Top Wash
2026/10/05
Your wash menu is the only salesperson you have that talks to every car, every day. At most washes, it's working against you. When your menu has five washes with names nobody understands, your customer doesn't pick the best one. They pick the cheapest one, because it's the only choice that feels safe. In this episode I break down how to rebuild your menu so it sells for you: why three washes beats five, what each one should say, and how to make your top wash the obvious choice. WHAT'S COVERED Why your customer is in fast-decision mode at the pay station, and what that means for every word on your menu The research on when too many choices actually hurt, and why a pay station checks almost every box Why three washes is the sweet spot, and the role your middle wash is really playing The six menu mistakes I see over and over: 1. The chemistry lesson 2. The mystery ladder 3. Copycat packages 4. The checklist grid 5. The math problem 6. Listing the cheapest option first What we learned from more than 7,000 customer comments at washes we work with, including the reason most of your customers aren't using your top wash's name How to write descriptions where each wash adds a different kind of value Where to put your top wash, what to tag it, and how to give it visual weight The one number to track before and after you change anything YOUR ASSIGNMENT THIS WEEK Take a picture of your menu. Count the washes and count how many words your customer has to read. Then rebuild it with three washes, names that rank themselves, and your top wash first. Run the test: top-wash take rate for the 30 days before and the 30 days after. Send me your before and after. I'd love to see it. MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE Don't Make Me Think by Steve Krug Donald Miller's four rules of messaging Daniel Kahneman on fast and slow thinking The decoy effect Suzanne Shu and Kurt Carlson on how many selling points persuade The hotel towel reuse study Leave a comment and tell me how many washes are on your menu right now. I read every one.
Episode 50: How to Keep Car Wash Members Through Rainy Season
2026/09/28
A customer pays twenty-five dollars for your top wash. The next morning it rains. She didn't lose a car wash. She feels like she lost twenty-five dollars. That feeling has a name, and it shapes how people buy almost everything, including your membership. In this episode of The Car Wash Growth Playbook, I break down loss aversion, the Nobel Prize-winning research showing we feel a loss about twice as strongly as we feel a gain. Then I show you what it means for how you sell car wash memberships, and how you keep members when it's been raining for three weeks straight. Most membership pitches ask your customer to get excited about something they might gain someday. Save money. Unlimited washes. Pays for itself in two visits. Meanwhile your customer is already trying to avoid a loss right now, and almost nobody in our industry is selling to it. We cover: Why "Save $154 a year" loses people at the pay stationThe reason 42% of members say they joined, according to an ICA consumer studyA two-word reframe that turns your membership into something customers hate to loseWhy rain guarantees answer the right fear for the wrong customerThe one line your team can say about your rain policy starting tomorrow morningThe visit threshold that makes members 70% less likely to cancel, from data across 1,500 locationsWhat to text members during a rainy stretch, and the one thing you should never mentionWhy a free month is the wrong answer when members haven't been inA loyalty card study done at a car wash that explains why a head start changes behaviorThe biggest fear keeping new customers from ever pulling in (it isn't the price)Then I give you one assignment for this week. It takes one message you're already using and one question you've probably never asked about it. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👇 One question for you in the comments: when a customer asks about your rain policy, what does your team say right now? I read every comment, and it helps me figure out what to talk about next. 🔔 Subscribe for a new episode every week, and send this one to an operator who's watching members cancel every time the forecast turns. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHO THIS IS FORExpress car wash owners, tunnel operators, multi-site car wash groups, and anyone running an unlimited wash club who dreads the rainy months, is watching members cancel after a wet stretch, or wants a membership pitch that works without asking customers to do math. Episode 49: How One Car Wash Increased Retail Washes by 50% on Halloween Without Discounting
2026/09/21
Most car wash operators think fall means one thing: discounts. Cut your price, hope the volume covers it, and wait for winter. This episode is about a different approach. One express wash ran a Halloween campaign that took their daily retail volume from 400 cars to 600 — at full price — using custom light-up pumpkin buckets, a $100 bill, and a text club they already had. They've run it every year since. In this episode, I walk you through exactly how they did it, why the order they sent their texts matters more than the offer itself, and how two washes turned the same Black Friday promotion into $40K and $112K respectively — and what the difference was. You'll also learn: - Why your members should always hear about a promotion first - How to use a seasonal giveaway to grow your text club at the same time - The four-text Black Friday schedule that worked across both washes - Which holiday offers moved the needle last season and which ones to consider for your market Halloween is closer than it feels. The operators who win this fall started planning in September. --- 📲 Get the book: Text BOOK to 411365 for a free copy of The Five Funnels to Freedom by Josh Taylor and Levi McClendon. 🤝 Already an OptSpot client? Episode 48: You're Not Losing Members. You're Buying The Wrong Ones.
2026/09/14
An operator overheard one of his own guys at the pay station telling a customer: just sign up, you can cancel. He pays five dollars a signup. Most car wash owners pay some version of that, and it's the reason their membership churn looks the way it does. That employee didn't do anything wrong. He did exactly what he was paid to do. Your comp plan is the clearest thing you will ever say to your team, and it's the only thing you say that they get paid to hear. If a signup is worth five dollars and a member who stays eleven months is worth nothing, you're going to get signups. You're just not going to keep them. In this episode of The Car Wash Growth Playbook I break down why most car wash membership churn starts at the pay station, and what to pay your team for instead. We cover: What a signup-only bonus is actually buying you, and what it isn'tWhy the customer who cancels in month three was never a retention problemThe reason your best retail customers are getting tired of your teamWhy a membership is the wrong product for some of the people you're selling it toHow an aggressive membership promo can quietly demoralize your managersWhat to add to your comp plan so retention has a reason to matterHow to get a nineteen-year-old to care about a number that pays out a year from now Then I get specific about the behaviors worth rewarding right now, this week. Somebody greeted ten regulars by name on a Saturday shift. Somebody spotted a guy struggling in the vacuum bay and walked over without being asked. Somebody took an upset customer and turned it around so well he came back. None of that shows up on a report. All of it is retention. And the one that proves whether your team believes you: the first time somebody on your crew passes on a signup because it wasn't a fit, thank him out loud, in front of everybody. Until they see you celebrate a signup you didn't take, the retention talk is just talk. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 👇 One question for you in the comments: what's one thing somebody on your crew did this month that kept a member? I read them all, and the best ideas in this business are already happening on somebody's lot. 🔔 Subscribe for a new episode every week. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHO THIS IS FORExpress car wash owners, tunnel operators, multi-site car wash groups, and anyone running an unlimited wash club who's watching membership churn climb, wondering why a big signup month never shows up in revenue, or trying to figure out what to actually pay a team for. Episode 47: Why Your Customers Leave for the New Car Wash
2026/09/07
A new car wash opens a few miles up the road, and within a few months your car count is down. Most operators blame grand opening pricing, or newer equipment, or the fact that people just like trying new things. After working with hundreds of car wash operators across North America, I think the real reason is harder to hear: your customers didn't leave because they had a bad experience with you. They left because they never had any experience with you at all. Your wash probably isn't bad. That's exactly the problem. In this episode of The Car Wash Growth Playbook I break down why a clean site, good equipment, and a fair price are no longer a reason for anybody to come back, and what it actually takes to be the wash a customer remembers. We cover: Why meeting the standard is what makes a car wash forgettableThe reason you'll never get a complaint about it, and why your reviews look fine anywayWhat really happens to your car count when a new competitor opens nearbyWho you're actually competing with, and why it isn't the tunnel down the streetWhat a memorable customer experience costs (it isn't equipment, and it isn't a mascot)Small things your team can do at the pay station and in the vacuum bay that customers repeat to other peopleThen I give you two questions to go ask this week. Ask five of your regular customers why they come here. Not whether they like it. Why they come. Then count how many say some version of it's on my way, or you had a good price. That number is your exposure, because convenience and price are the two easiest things in the world for somebody to take away from you. Then ask your team this one: if a customer went home tonight and told their spouse about their day, would their visit to our wash make the list? If your crew goes quiet, that's your answer. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ GET THE BOOKThe Five Funnels to Freedom — the five strategies we use to help car washes win at marketing.📘 https://optspot.com/request-a-book ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ WHO THIS IS FORExpress car wash owners, tunnel operators, multi-site car wash groups, and anyone running an unlimited wash club who's watching car counts slide, losing customers to a newer competitor, or wondering why good reviews aren't turning into loyalty. Episode 46: Do This Before Your Promote Your Next Manager
2026/08/31
Most car wash owners think they have a hiring problem. They can't find good people, their crew doesn't care, and they're hiring constantly without anything getting better. But after working with hundreds of car wash locations across North America, I can tell you that most washes don't have an employee problem at all. They have a seating problem — and it usually starts with a promotion the owner made two years ago. In this episode of The Car Wash Growth Playbook, I break down why car wash staffing and car wash management problems are so often misdiagnosed, and what to do about it without firing anybody. We cover: Why rotating every CSA through every job on the property quietly costs you sales and phone number captureThe reason more training won't turn a great loader into a great salespersonWhat actually happens when you promote your best CSA into a manager role (and the second cost nobody counts)How to spot the person on your crew who is already wired to manage, even though their numbers are averageWhy the car wash owner is often the one sitting in the wrong seatWhy small car wash operators can fix this faster than any multi-site chain or corporationI also give you the four questions to ask every employee on your team: What part of this job do you love? If you could do one thing all day, what would it be?What part of it puts a knot in your stomach? What part do you think you're actually good at?What part frustrates you?Ask those one on one and you'll learn more in fifteen minutes than you learned watching that person for a year. Pay attention when the answers don't line up, because the employee who's good at a job that puts a knot in their stomach is the one who quits on you without warning.
Episode 45: Why Car Wash Owners Can't Scale (And What to Do About It)
2026/08/24
Most car wash owners aren't stuck because of their wash. They're stuck because of how they're running it. In this episode, I break down the real reason growth stalls — and it's not your equipment, your location, or your competition. It's attention. Specifically, yours. When you're operating at 10% across ten different roles, you're losing to the person you could hire at 80% in one focused role. Every time. The math doesn't lie. I share two real stories: an operator who had a 5-year plan and finished it in 2.5 years by building a team he actually trusted — and a young couple who doubled their business in under 12 months the moment the wife stepped out of daily operations. The pattern is the same in both cases. And it's probably the pattern in your business right now. If you've been grinding harder but not growing faster, this one's for you. In this episode: The delegation math that most owners never run Why 10% of you loses to 80% of a focused hire every time Real operator stories: 5-year plan done in 2.5 years How a couple doubled their wash by doing less, not more What it actually means to buy back your own attention 🚗 OptSpot helps car wash operators grow on a plan — not on luck.📈 Learn more at optspot.com Get the book at https://optspot.com/request-a-book/
Episode 44: Why 31% of Car Washes are Losing Retail Revenue (And How to Stop It)
2026/08/17
The International Car Wash Association's Q3 Pulse Report just dropped — and one number should stop every operator in their tracks. 31% of car washes reported that retail revenue is DOWN from last year. Not membership revenue. Retail. The customers paying per visit, the ones who keep coming back but haven't signed up yet. Most operators are ignoring them. Here's why that's a mistake — and what to do instead. In this episode: → Why retail revenue is declining for nearly a third of operators (and it's not the economy) → The #1 reason members cancel (it's not price — 40% said they just stopped using it) → Why a 5% opt-in rate vs. a 90% opt-in rate changes the entire math of your business → How to turn retail customers into long-term members without a better pay station pitch → What OptSpot's Smart Engage does differently — and why personalization is the #1 reason consumers switch washes The wash that stays connected to every customer — retail and member alike — is the wash that grows. The wash that treats every car as a one-time transaction keeps starting over. 🎙️ The Car Wash Growth Playbook is your weekly 10-minute blueprint for predictable car wash growth. 📖 Get the FREE book — Five Funnels to Freedom:Text BOOK to 411365 or visit FiveFunnelsToFreedom.com 🔔 Subscribe so you never miss an episode. Episode 43: The One Sentence That Protects Your Car Wash's Future
2026/08/10
You hired somebody to protect the number. He's protecting it. He's also cutting the things that were going to pay you next spring, and he has no idea he's doing it. From where he sits, every one of those cuts was the responsible call. He's not the problem. What he was never told is the problem. There's a sentence most car wash owners have never said out loud, and until you say it, your team is making decisions with half the information. Not because they're careless. Because you're the only one who can see where this is going. In this episode, I'll show you the three places this quietly costs operators every year, why the number you check most often is the one hiding the most damage, and what that one sentence actually sounds like when you say it to a GM, to a manager, and to the guy at the pay station on a Saturday. Ten minutes. Watch it before your next budget conversation. Episode 42: Your Sales Process Might Be Your Churn Problem
2026/08/03
Your sales process might be the reason your members are leaving.Churn just hit a new high across the car wash industry, and the fix everyone's selling is more sales technology. More pressure at the pay station, more tools, more sign-ups per shift. In this episode, Josh Taylor breaks down why that approach is quietly creating the exact churn operators are trying to fix, and what to do instead.Through three real case studies, you'll see how messaging, incentives, and timing determine whether a member stays for 7 months or 26. You'll learn why a "yes" at the pay station isn't the same as a member who lasts, why voluntary cancellations are rising while failed payments fall, and what an actual retention system looks like from sign-up through renewal. If you're an operator trying to grow membership without watching people cancel out the back, this one's for you.Get the bookWe put the full framework in Five Funnels to Freedom. Episode 41: Your Best Salesperson Might Be a Sign at Your Car Wash
2026/07/27
Most car wash operators put real money into getting customers to the lot. Then they hand those customers over to signs, screens, and staff interactions that work against your revenue.Every touchpoint from the moment a customer turns in is doing marketing. Most of it is doing it badly by default. In this episode, OptSpot's CMO, Josh Taylor, walks through the on-site moments that are either winning customers over or letting them slip — and what it looks like when they actually work.- Why your signs are already selling, whether you designed them that way or not- What the pay station screen is costing you every day- The one thing your team says, or doesn't say, that changes the sale- How to treat every on-site moment as a marketing asset
Episode 40: How to Increase Your Car Wash's Social Media Engagement
2026/07/20
Most car wash operators post on social media for months and never see it turn into new members. The problem usually isn't how often you post. It's whose story you're telling. In this episode, I break down the five types of posts that actually build a following for a car wash — and why the accounts that get real engagement are telling a completely different story. - Why transformation stories outperform everything else - The five post types and when to use each one - Why your first line determines whether anyone sees the rest - What it actually looks like to build familiarity and trust on social
