Stephanie shares valuable advice for new beauty business owners looking to navigate the challenges of starting and growing a successful beauty business. One of the main mistakes that new business owners make is not being mindful of their finances. Stephanie recommends creating a detailed budget and financial plan from the very beginning, and being careful about making unnecessary purchases or investments. It's also important to track your expenses and income carefully and regularly review your financial performance. Another common mistake that new business owners make is not being strategic with their time. Stephanie suggests setting clear goals and priorities, and being mindful of how you allocate your time and resources. It's also a good idea to delegate tasks and responsibilities where possible, and to make sure you're taking care of your own physical and mental health. Finally, Stephanie advises new business owners to be open to learning from others and seeking out mentors and advisors who can offer guidance and support. It's also important to stay up to date on industry trends and best practices, and to continually seek out opportunities for growth and improvement. Ep 223: Why I Wear Gloves For Every Service
2026/10/05
Estheticians, are you wearing gloves during EVERY service? 🧤 In Episode 223 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, I’m sharing why wearing gloves for every service has become a non-negotiable part of how I work as an esthetician. We talk so much about protecting our clients—but who is protecting the esthetician? Throughout your career, your hands come into contact with clients’ skin, skincare products, exfoliants, waxes, tools, equipment, surfaces, and potentially bodily fluids. When you're performing services day after day and client after client, those repeated exposures matter. For me, wearing gloves is about protection, sanitation, consistency, and professionalism. 🧤 In This Episode, We’re Talking About: ✨ Why I choose to wear gloves for every service ✨ Protecting yourself AND your clients ✨ Why your hands are an important part of your livelihood ✨ Cross-contamination in the treatment room ✨ Why gloves still need to be changed during a service ✨ Why wearing gloves does NOT replace proper handwashing ✨ Creating consistent sanitation habits with every client ✨ Thinking about long-term exposure when you perform services every day 💡 Protect the Esthetician Too! As beauty professionals, we're trained to think about the health and safety of our clients—but we need to think about ourselves too. Your hands are working every single day. Protect them. For me, gloves aren't something I save for certain services. Wearing them has become part of my professional standard for EVERY service. And remember: simply putting on gloves doesn't eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination. If you touch your phone, a cabinet, a dirty tool, the trash can, or another contaminated surface with your gloves, you may need to change your gloves before continuing the service. Good infection-control practices require awareness throughout the entire appointment. 🎧 Listen to EP 223: Why I Wear Gloves Every Service and hear why I've made this choice throughout my career as an esthetician. 🎓 Want More Esthetician Education? EP 222: Quarter 4 of 2026 for Your Esthetic Business
2026/09/28
EP 221: Working Within Your Scope of Practice
2026/09/22
Just because a client asks you to do something doesn't mean it's within your scope of practice. In Episode 221 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, we're talking about something EVERY esthetician needs to understand: working within your professional scope of practice. As estheticians, we want to help our clients. We want to provide solutions. We want them to see results. But there is a line between providing professional esthetic services and stepping into an area that may require a different license, credential, or healthcare professional. Knowing where that line is isn't about limiting your business. It's about protecting it. 🚨 “But I Saw Another Esthetician Doing It…” Social media can make it easy to assume that because another beauty professional is performing a treatment, recommending something, or making certain claims, you can do it too. That's not necessarily true. Your scope can depend on your license, training, service being performed, products or devices being used, and the laws and regulations where you practice. 🎧 Listen to EP 221: Working Within Your Scope of Practice on the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast. This episode is for educational purposes and is not legal or medical advice. Scope-of-practice requirements vary by jurisdiction. Check with your state licensing or regulatory authority for the rules that apply to your license. 🎓 Join the SLI Online Esthetician School Continue your education beyond the treatment room! EP 220: Everything Will Work Out!
2026/09/14
🎙️ EP 220: Everything Will Work Out! Remember that situation you thought was TERRIBLE…until you looked back and realized it was one of the best things that could have happened to you? In Episode 220 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, we're talking about something every entrepreneur needs to hear: Everything will work out—even when you can't see HOW it's going to work out yet. Running an esthetics business comes with moments that can make you question everything. A client leaves. Your schedule slows down. An employee quits. An opportunity falls through. You lose money. A business relationship ends. You have to change a plan you were absolutely certain was going to work. And while you're IN the situation, it can feel like everything is going wrong. But then six months, a year, or even several years later, you look back and realize: That situation redirected me to something BETTER. 💡 Remember What You've Already Survived Think about some of the situations in your life and business that once kept you up at night. At the time, you couldn't see the solution. But somehow, you figured it out. You made another decision. You found another opportunity. You changed directions. You learned something you needed to learn. And sometimes the thing you were fighting so hard to KEEP was exactly what you needed to LET GO of. ❤️ You Don't Have to Have the Entire Answer Today As business owners, we want to know: What's going to happen? Where is the money going to come from? How am I going to fix this? Did I make the right decision? What if this doesn't work? Sometimes you won't have those answers immediately. That doesn't mean you stop working toward the solution. It means you remind yourself: I've been in difficult situations before, and I figured them out. I can figure this one out too. ✨ What If This Is Redirecting You? Instead of only asking, "Why is this happening to me?" Try asking: "Where could this be taking me?" That change you didn't want may create an opportunity you couldn't see. That "NO" may force you to find a better YES. That ending may finally give you room to start something new. And that business problem you're dealing with today may eventually become the experience you use to help someone else tomorrow. 🎧 Everything Will Work Out! You don't need to pretend difficult situations aren't difficult. You don't have to ignore the numbers or avoid making hard decisions. But you also don't have to assume that today's problem is your final outcome. Look at everything you've already made it through. Look at the decisions that once scared you but ultimately changed your life for the better. You couldn't see the ending then. Maybe you can't see the ending now either. Keep going. Keep making decisions. Keep learning. Keep adjusting. And remember: Everything will work out. 🎧 Listen to EP 220: Everything Will Work Out! on the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast. 🎓 Join the SLI Online Esthetician School You don't have to figure out every part of your esthetics business alone. EP 219: Do You Offer Sunday Appointments?
2026/09/07
Estheticians, have you ever considered opening your schedule on Sundays? 📅💰 In Episode 219 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, we’re talking about whether offering Sunday appointments could create an additional revenue opportunity for your esthetics business. For many clients, Monday through Friday appointments simply don't work. They have jobs, children, school, long commutes, and busy schedules. Even Saturdays can be difficult. So what happens when your clients are available on Sunday—but you're closed? 💰 Could Sunday Become a Revenue Day? This episode isn't about telling every esthetician that she needs to work seven days a week. It's about looking at your business differently and asking: Is there demand for appointments at a time I'm currently unavailable? Maybe you don't need to offer Sundays every week. What about: ✨ One Sunday per month✨ Two Sundays per month✨ Sunday appointments during your busiest season✨ Limited Sunday hours✨ Premium-priced Sunday appointments✨ Special Sunday events or treatment days Sometimes growing your revenue doesn't require finding hundreds of new clients. It may require making it easier for the clients who already want your services to actually book with you. 📊 Look at YOUR Business Before Deciding Before opening another day, look at the numbers. Are clients asking for Sunday appointments? Are your Saturdays consistently booked? Do you have clients who struggle to find appointments around their work schedules? Would Sunday availability generate enough revenue to justify giving up that time? And most importantly: Does adding Sunday support the business and lifestyle you're trying to build? More availability doesn't automatically mean more profit. Your goal should be to create a schedule that makes sense financially without creating a business that requires you to work every day to survive. 🗓️ You Control Your Schedule Being a business owner gives you the ability to experiment. Try one Sunday. Market it. See how quickly it books. Track how much revenue you generate. Then decide whether Sunday appointments deserve a permanent place on your calendar. Don't assume your clients won't book a day you've never offered them. 🎧 Listen to EP 219: Do You Offer Sunday Appointments? and decide whether Sunday could become your next opportunity to generate additional income. 🎓 Grow Your Esthetics Business With SLI Join the SLI Online Esthetician School for only $30/month for advanced esthetic education, The Money Podcast, marketing strategies, business training, revenue ideas, challenges, and more! 👉 JOIN THE SLI ONLINE ESTHETICIAN SCHOOL: https://www.skool.com/sli-online-esthetician-school-5829/about
EP 218: When Do You Give Yourself Money?
2026/08/31
Daily? Weekly? Monthly? When does the money your business makes actually become YOUR money? 💰 In Episode 218 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, we’re having an important conversation every esthetician and beauty business owner needs to have: When do you pay yourself? You make $300 today—do you immediately transfer money to your personal account? You have a $2,000 week—do you decide what you can personally spend based on what came in? Or do you have an actual system for determining when and how much your business pays you? There’s a big difference between your business making money and YOU making money. 💰 Daily, Weekly or Monthly? There isn’t one payment schedule that works for every beauty business. What matters is creating a system instead of randomly taking money whenever it's available. In this episode, we're discussing what it looks like to pay yourself: DAILY: Are you constantly transferring money out of your business based on what you made that day? WEEKLY: Would a scheduled weekly payment give you more consistency while allowing your business to maintain the cash it needs? MONTHLY: Would paying yourself a set amount each month help you separate your personal finances from the financial needs of your business? The bigger question isn't simply WHEN do you pay yourself? It's: Does your business have enough money left after you pay yourself to continue operating? 🚨 Every Dollar That Comes In Isn't Yours to Spend Your business has responsibilities. Products.Supplies.Rent.Payroll.Taxes.Marketing.Software.Insurance.Education.Inventory.Unexpected expenses. If you treat every deposit as personal income, you can have a business generating thousands of dollars in revenue while constantly wondering: “Where did all the money go?” Revenue is not the same thing as profit—and your bank balance isn't automatically your paycheck. 💵 Create a Pay-Yourself System Instead of deciding how much money you can take based on what's sitting in your account today, start asking: How much can my business consistently afford to pay me? Then create a schedule. Whether that's weekly, twice a month, or monthly, paying yourself intentionally can help you understand what your business is REALLY producing. Your goal isn't just to own a business that makes money. Your business should eventually be able to PAY YOU. 🎧 Listen to EP 218: When Do You Give Yourself Money? and think about how you're currently paying yourself from your esthetics business. 🎓 Want More Conversations About MONEY? EP 217: 3 Things to Do Before Paying for Tik Tok Ads
2026/08/24
Thinking about paying for TikTok ads to promote your esthetics business? Before you put $25, $50, $100—or more—behind a video, there are a few things you need to know. In Episode 217 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, Stephanie shares 3 things every esthetician and beauty business owner should do BEFORE paying for TikTok ads. Because paying TikTok to show more people a bad video doesn't magically turn it into a good one. Before you advertise, your content needs a purpose, a clear audience, and proof that people actually want to watch it. 📱 3 Things to Do BEFORE Paying for TikTok Ads 1️⃣ Make Sure Your Video Is Ad-Worthy Before spending money, ask yourself: What do I want someone to DO after watching this video? Book an appointment? Buy a product? Visit your website? Follow your page? Your video needs a clear purpose and a clear next step. If viewers don't know what to do when the video ends, paying for more views probably isn't going to solve the problem. 2️⃣ Tell People WHERE You Are If you're an esthetician trying to book local clients, your content needs to make your location clear. Don't make potential clients search for it. Include your city and state in your video, caption, profile, or call-to-action so the right people immediately understand that your business is available to them. 3️⃣ Let Your Analytics Tell You the Truth Your analytics don't care how much you love the video. If people aren't stopping, watching, engaging, clicking, or taking action organically, think carefully before turning that content into an ad. Don't automatically pay to push content people have already shown you they don't want to watch. Your organic content can help you identify the videos that deserve additional advertising dollars. 💰 You Don't Need a Huge TikTok Ad Budget to Start One of the biggest misconceptions about advertising is that you need thousands of dollars or an expensive agency before you can learn what works. You don't. You can start small. You can test. You can make mistakes. You can study your analytics. And you can use what you learn to make your next campaign better. The goal isn't simply to say: “I'm running TikTok ads.” The goal is for those ads to produce an action that matters to your business. 🚨 Remember: Views Aren't the Goal 10,000 views with no bookings isn't necessarily better than 1,000 views that produce five new clients. 100,000 views with no sales doesn't automatically make a successful campaign. Before you advertise, determine what success actually looks like: 📅 Appointments🛍️ Product sales🔗 Website visits📲 Leads💰 Revenue Then create your content—and your ads—around THAT objective. 🎧 Listen to EP 217: 3 Things to Do Before You Pay for TikTok Ads before spending another dollar promoting your content. 🎓 Want More Esthetician Business & Marketing Education? EP 216: How Much $$$ Can You Accept?
2026/08/17
You say you want to make more money—but how much money are you mentally and emotionally prepared to receive, manage, and keep? 💰 In Episode 216 of the Stephanie Laynes Institute Beauty Business Podcast, Stephanie dives into a side of making money that isn't talked about enough: your ability to accept financial success before your current circumstances reflect it. Maybe you've struggled with money. Maybe you've experienced debt, inconsistent income, slow months, or financial decisions you wish you could change. Those experiences can influence how you think about money today—but they don't have to determine how much you're capable of earning tomorrow. As your beauty business grows, your capacity for money has to grow with it. Can you imagine consistently making $5,000 a month? $10,000? $20,000? $50,000? And when you picture those numbers, what comes up? Excitement? Fear? Doubt? Guilt? Disbelief? This episode is about recognizing the mental and emotional barriers that can show up when you start thinking BIGGER about what's financially possible for you and your business. 💰 In This Episode, We're Talking About: ✨ What it means to mentally accept making more money ✨ Why wanting more money and being comfortable receiving it aren't always the same thing ✨ How past money struggles can influence your expectations for the future ✨ Why you may unconsciously put a ceiling on your earning potential ✨ Becoming comfortable seeing bigger numbers in your business ✨ Learning to receive money without immediately feeling the need to spend it ✨ Why making more money also requires learning how to manage more money ✨ Separating your past financial experiences from your future financial potential 💡 What's Your Money Ceiling? Sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't whether the money is available. It's whether you believe that amount of money is available to YOU. If you've spent years surviving financially, stability can feel unfamiliar. If you've never earned $10,000 in a month, $10,000 may sound impossible. And once you reach one financial level, you may discover an entirely new set of emotions around reaching the next one. That's why growing your income isn't only about getting more clients, raising your prices, or selling more products. There's also an internal question: Can I accept this level of success? And then: Can I responsibly manage it once it arrives? 💵 Your Money Issues Don't Disqualify You From Making More Money You don't have to have a perfect financial history before you decide to change your relationship with money. You can acknowledge the mistakes. You can learn from the difficult seasons. You can improve your financial habits. And you can still allow yourself to want MORE. Your current bank account doesn't get to decide the size of your vision. Your past doesn't get to set the financial ceiling for your future. The question is… How much money are YOU willing to accept? 🎧 Press play on Episode 216 and let's talk about it. 🎓 Join the SLI Online Esthetician School Ready to become a stronger esthetician AND business owner? EP 212: Your the Content Creator for Your Business
2026/07/20
Did you know that one of the most valuable roles in your beauty business isn't just being an esthetician—it's being your own content creator? In Episode 212 of the SLI Online Esthetician School Podcast, Stephanie Laynes explains why every esthetician, spa owner, skincare professional, and beauty entrepreneur must embrace content creation to grow their business, build trust, and attract new clients. If you're waiting for someone else to market your business, you're missing one of the biggest opportunities to increase your visibility, generate leads, and create consistent income. The good news? You don't need thousands of followers—you need consistent, valuable content that speaks directly to your ideal client. In This Episode You'll Learn Why every esthetician is a content creator. How social media helps you build trust before a client ever books. Why consistency beats perfection on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, and Pinterest. How educational content positions you as the skincare expert. The difference between creating content that gets views and content that gets clients. Why authenticity is your greatest marketing advantage. How to turn everyday client questions into endless social media content. Why Content Marketing Matters for Estheticians Today's skincare clients don't just search Google—they also search TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, Pinterest, and AI-powered search tools for skincare advice, product recommendations, and estheticians they can trust. Every video, photo, blog post, email, podcast, and social media post you create becomes a digital salesperson working for your business 24 hours a day. When you consistently create valuable content, you can: Attract more facial clients. Increase retail skincare sales. Build authority in your local market. Grow your email list. Generate online skincare consultations. Increase bookings without relying only on paid advertising. Build a recognizable personal brand. Create long-term relationships with potential clients. Your Business Needs Two Audiences Every piece of content should speak to one of two groups: 1. Your Current Clients Create content that helps existing clients: Stay consistent with their skincare routine. Learn how to use products correctly. Understand treatment benefits. Feel connected to your brand. Refer family members and friends. Become repeat clients. A private Facebook Community or VIP client group is a powerful way to educate, engage, and encourage referrals while strengthening client loyalty. 2. Your Future Clients Your second audience is people who have never met you. They are searching for answers to questions like: Why is my skin breaking out? What causes eczema? How do I get rid of dry skin? What's the best facial for sensitive skin? Why is my scalp itchy? What skincare products actually work? When you consistently answer these questions through short-form videos, blog posts, podcasts, YouTube videos, and social media content, you become the trusted expert they remember when they're ready to book. Content Ideas Every Esthetician Should Create Never run out of content by creating: Skincare tips Client FAQs Before-and-after transformations (with permission) Product demonstrations Treatment education Ingredient spotlights Myth vs. Fact videos Day-in-the-life content Client testimonials Behind-the-scenes videos Business owner insights Success stories Seasonal skincare advice Live Q&A sessions Educational podcast episodes The Power of Consistency Many estheticians stop posting because they believe every video has to go viral. EP 211: Do You Need a Supportive Partner and/or Family?
2026/07/13
In Episode 211 of the SLI Online Esthetician School Podcast, Stephanie Laynes shares her perspective on one of the most common questions asked by beauty professionals: Do you need a supportive partner or a supportive family to become a successful esthetician and entrepreneur? Stephanie's answer may surprise you. While having encouragement from family is wonderful, she explains why having a supportive partner can make a greater difference when you're building a business and creating a life together. In This Episode You'll Learn Why emotional support matters when building an esthetics business. How a supportive partner can positively impact your entrepreneurial journey. Why family members may not always understand your vision. How to handle criticism from friends and family while staying focused on your goals. The importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in your success. Healthy ways to communicate with your spouse or partner about the demands of running a beauty business. How to protect your mindset during the early stages of entrepreneurship. Why Support Matters for Estheticians Many licensed estheticians dream of opening their own spa, growing a skincare brand, becoming a solo esthetician, or creating financial freedom through entrepreneurship. However, building a successful beauty business often requires sacrifices that others may not immediately understand. You may experience: Working evenings and weekends. Reinvesting profits back into your business. Spending hours creating social media content. Investing in continuing education. Delaying vacations or major purchases. Managing uncertainty while your business grows. Having someone at home who understands these challenges can provide stability, encouragement, and confidence during difficult seasons. Family Support vs. Partner Support Every family dynamic is different, and many entrepreneurs receive incredible encouragement from parents, siblings, and relatives. In this episode, Stephanie discusses why a supportive life partner often has a greater day-to-day influence because they typically share your household, finances, responsibilities, and long-term goals. When you and your partner communicate well and work as a team, it can make navigating the challenges of entrepreneurship much easier. At the same time, if family members don't fully understand your vision, it doesn't necessarily mean you can't succeed. Many successful entrepreneurs have built thriving businesses while earning support gradually through consistent action and results. Key Takeaway You don't need everyone's approval to build a successful esthetics business. You do need people in your life who respect your goals, encourage your growth, and support the work required to achieve your vision. A supportive partner can be an important part of that foundation, while a strong network of mentors, business friends, and fellow estheticians can provide additional encouragement along the way.
