Synopsis
There are two explanations of the verse, “Hashem said to Avram: Lech lecha (‘Go forth’)…” (1) From above downward: “Avram” means Av Ram (Lofty Father), which represents the level of “intellect hidden from any perception.” Avraham’s soul had to descend from this level down to this lowest world. And the order is: “from your land” (one’s will); then “from your birthplace” (the middos born from the intellect); then “from your father’s house” (an even lower level); and then “to the land” (Malchus). The same applies to the descent of every soul. But as a result of this descent, “I will show you” (the revelation of the soul’s qualities etc.). (2) From below upward: Avram went up from Charan to Eretz Yisroel. In spiritual terms, this is an ascent beginning from Charan (“the fury of the world”) and proceeding upward. And the order is: “from your land” (an undesirable will); then “from your birthplace” (one’s habits); then “from your father’s house” (the intellectual faculties and the middos) etc. until one reaches “the land that I will show you” (his true will, which is the will of one’s Creator.

Synopsis
(Continued.) At the beginning of the school day, at least a moment should be devoted to instilling faith in the Creator of the world, in words equally appropriate for everyone, and at the very least a moment of silence and silent prayr to contemplate the Creator and Ruler of the world. Every day that passes without this necessary correction being made is a pity, and no matter how much is said about the matter, it is not enough due to how serious it is. And the whole discussion as to whether this is consistent with the Constitution is irrelevant: The Constitution itself states that it was established by the people for the benefit of the people, and if the benefit of the people in the present is different from what it was 200 years ago, things must be changed accordingly. The statistics show that the percentage of people educated in schools where G-d is not allowed to be mentioned who do not follow the proper path is beyond any comparison to that among those educated in private schools where they are allowed to learn about religion. It is therefore imperative to change the current situation and establish by law that in every public school the existence of the Creator of the world should be mentioned – “an eye that sees and ear that hears”!

Synopsis
(Continued.) In many countries children receive their education primarily in school, and therefore it is of utmost importance that in school they be instilled (and at the beginning of the day) with an awareness of faith in the Creator and Ruler of the world, and that one must conduct oneself in accordance with His will and that He cannot be deceived, etc. – “an eye sees and an ear hears.” There are those who fight to prohibit any mention of G-d in public schools, on the basis that the Constitution requires separation of religion and state. But this argument falls apart when you consider the spirit of the law: The founders of the country designed the Constitution so that people could enjoy freedom of religion (unlike the countries from which they had fled etc.); this is why they included a clause prohibiting the government from interfering with the people’s ability to exercise their religion as they see fit. It therefore makes no sense to use this clause to deny freedom of religion to those parents who want their children to be imbued with the knowledge of G-d. Moreover, these parents are penalized, because in addition to paying taxes to support the public schools, they also have to finance at their own expense the private schools where their children can learn about religion. Synopsis
The firm and true foundation for educating young people to conduct themselves with justice and integrity etc. is the knowledge that “This palace has an Owner” – that Hashem is the Creator of the world and that He runs the world with Hashgacha Protis. Hashem created man with a yetzer hara, and it is possible that the threat of punishment alone will not deter a person from doing something he shouldn’t (because he may be prepared to suffer the punishment, or he may try to evade the punishment etc.). Therefore, the only way to ensure that the yetzer hara does not overcome him, and to preserve the observance of the fundamental commandments that affect the very existence of humanity (such as the prohibitions against muder and theft etc.) is to instill in the child from his earliest years that Hashem, the One Above who is above every thing and every person, is his personal G-d, and that there is an “eye that sees and an ear that hears” his behavior. (As discussed many times, this is proven by the fact that the country which was most adavanced in scientific knowledge and ethics etc. produced the most inhumane behavior –because their wisdom was not founded upon the knowledge that G-d runs the world etc. (To be continued.)

Synopsis
(1) Parashas Lech Lecha comes after parashas Noach: In order to truly advance in a manner beyond all proportion – “Lech lecha” – to the essence of the soul – one must face the “mighty waters” (opposition, challenges and tests etc.) and stand firm against thim. Then, as a result, “I will make your name great...” This is the mission of every individual: to “go forth” and leave “your land” (one’s personal desires), “your birthplace” (one’s habits), and “your father’s house” (conventional balebatishe norms). Then one is assured not only that the “mighty waters cannot extinguish the love,” but on the contrary, “you will be a blessing.” (2) Because a person is affected by the time and place, one’s service must be tailored to the circumstances of that particular place and time. One of the proofs for this is from the verse (in rishon of parashas Lech Lecha) stating that when Avraham arrived in Egypt he said to Sarah, “Behold, now I know that you are a woman of beautiful appearance” (“until then he did not recognize this about her because of modesty…”). The question is asked: Why did he look at her now? The explanation given is that this was the kelipah of Egypt, and it had an effect even on Avraham. This is also seen in a story of the Alter Rebbe: After the Mitteler Rebbe’s son got married, his grandfather the Alter Rebbe promised him that if he would agree to remove the fancy collar from his fur coat, he would merit to be together with the Alter Rebbe in the World to Come. Because in that country at that time there was a particular intensification of the kelipah associated with clothing, and the Alter Rebbe wanted to break it from the outset.

Synopsis
This lesson, that one must increase in Ahavas Yisroel and Jewish unity, is particularly relevant after the month of Tishrei. Because during Tishrei (which is “abundant in festivals”) Jews constantly meet each in other in shul etc., but after Tishrei, when everyone returns home to their own affairs, there is a particular need to inspire people to continue live with the atmosphere of unity and joy of the month of Tishrei. The Shach states that even nowadays, when one writes “after the festival” in a legal document, it means 7 Cheshvan. Meaning: Even during the time of exile, the festival continues through 6 Cheshvan. So until 6 Cheshvan there is nothing novel about the fact that the atmosphere of unity and joy of the month of Tishrei continues, and it is not necessary to remind oneself of that feeling, because it is still before his eyes. The novelty is that even “after the festival,” on 7 Cheshvan, one knows that he is not leaving the festival behind. On the contrary, he continues to live throughout the rest of the year in a way that is “after the festival” – with the atmosphere and under the influence of the joy and unity of Sicmhas Torah.

Synopsis
On the verse, “Many waters cannot extinguish the love, and rivers cannot wash it away,” the Alter Rebbe explains (see Torah Or, Parashas Noach), based on the Midrash, that Hashem promises (“Hashem helps him”) that the “many waters,” referring to worldly matters (which can become “wicked waters”) cannot extinguish the hidden love in the heart of every Jew, which he possesses as an inheritance from Avraham Avinu, whose publicized G-dliness throughout the world and similarly “commanded his children and his household after him.” On the other hand, the “many waters” of holiness (the “great love” for Hashem) do extinguish and wash away the love of kelipah – the loves and desires for worldly matters. This was the purpose of the Mabul, which cleansed the world (which had been “filled with robbery”) like a purifying mikveh etc.

Synopsis
Even one who studies in a local yeshivah and eats and sleeps in his parents’ home can achieve the quality of “Exiling yourself to a place of Torah” – by “exiling” himself from mundane matters and making them external aspects of his life, while placing his inner being “in a place of Torah.” This relates to the verse in revi’i of parashas Noach, “Go out from the teivah”: A person must be permeated and surrounded by faith in Hashem, love of Hashem, and fear of Hashem, which are like a “teivah.” But in order for his Torah study (through which he goes out into the true world – “He looked into the Torah and created the world”) to be done properly, he must “Go out from the teivah,” meaning he must strive to understand the Torah with his intellect (where faith is not as openly revealed etc.). But the Torah study must be founded upon the prior foundation of the teivah (faith etc.) so that he will not be motivated by a desire to prevail in his arguments etc., and to remove anything that could interfere with the “wondrous union” formed between his intellect and Hashem through Torah study.

Synopsis
It is incumbent upon us to influence the nations of the world to observe the Sheva Mitzvos Bnei Noach, and this is not chas v’shalom some new innovation, but a clear halachic ruling of the Rambam: “Moshe Rabbeinu was commanded by the Almi-ghty to compel all the inhabitants of the world to accept the mitzvos commanded to the Bnei Noach.” The reason it was not done throughout the generations is because it would have been dangerous to attempt to speak to gentiles about relgion etc., and saving lives takes precedence. But in our generation we see plainly that the world has changed, and now, not only is there no danger involved, but on the contrary – when one approaches a non-Jew and shows him that Hashem gave him seven mitzvos upon which the continued existence of the world depends, and the non-Jew sees that it is meant for his own good etc., he is grateful for it. And if one argues, aren’t there other things to do etc. – with such an approach could avoid keeping all the mitzvos chas v’shalom, by always arguing that he is occupied with another mitzvah...

The name of Parsahas Noach (which expresses its content) is Noach (“tranquility”), even though it speaks about the Mabul, which seems to be the very opposite of tranquility. This can be understood based on the reason the Mabul is called “the Waters of Noach” – because the deeper purpose of the Mabul was to purify the earth, bringing about a “new world” and “tranquility Above and tranquility below.” In terms of divine service: This tranquility is attained precisely when there is a Mabul (concealment over G-dliness), and a Jew overcomes it by entering the “Teivah,” meaning the words of Torah and tefillah. In this way, he is not only unaffected by the “many waters,” but builds a new world. This is the meaning of the verse, “Many waters cannot extinguish the love...”: Even if a Jew is preoccupied with earning a livelihood (instead of “eating of the toil of your hands,” his head, which is supposed to be invested in Torah and mitzvos is also engrossed in earning a livelihood), and although these “many waters” have a very high source, nevertheless, the “many waters” cannot extinguish his hidden love for Hashem, because the soul’s source is even higher. (On the contrary: it is specifically through the “many waters” that he is elevated to an even higher level.)

Synopsis
The purpose of holding this farbrengen on a weekday is to utilize the technological advancements of recent years to instantly bring the words of the Rebbeim all over the world. On the verse, “In the six hundredth year of Noach’s life…all the springs of the great deep burst open, and the windows of the heavens opened up,” the Zohar states: “In the six hundredth year of the sixth millennium, the gates of wisdom Above and the springs of wisdom below will open, and the world will be prepared for the seventh millennium etc.” This is associated with the revelation of the Baal Shem Tov around the year 5500 etc., and likewise, the technological advancements in the world that must be utilized for disseminating Torah in general, and particularly for disseminating the wellsprings of Chassidus. Similarly, the proclamation (as customary in Lubavitch) “Yaakov went on his way” at the conclusion of the service of the month of Tishrei should go forth from the four cubits of the Nasi of our generation to every corner of the world simultaneously. In “Yaakov going on his way” there are multiple stages: after Yom Kippur, after Simchas Torah, and ultimately, in the most simple form, on the seventh of Cheshvan after “the last of the Jewish people has reached the Euphrates River,” when the service in the “diaspora” and permissible mundane matters begins.

Synopsis
On the verse “These are the generations of Noach, Noach, etc.” (at the beginning of parashas Noach), the Zohar states that Noach comes from the word naicha (tranquility), and the double use of the word Noach represents “tranquility Above and tranquility below.” The lesson is as follows: When a Jew looks around him and sees that “darkness covers the earth, etc.,” and thinks he is not strong enough to contend with the world, etc., he must know that this has already been done in the past: Although Noach was just one person standing against the entire world, nevertheless, by conducting himself as a “perfectly righteous man” he achieved absolute victory in the fullest sense, to the point that he brought about an entirely “new world” with “tranquility Above and tranquility below,” akin to the perfection of the world when Moshiach comes. This is the significance of the name of the parashah of the week: every day and every moment of the week is a day and a moment of parashas Noach – “tranquility.”

Synopsis
Torah affects the entire world (as it says, “He looked into the Torah and created the world”) especially when one studies the beginning of the Torah, “In the beginning of G-d’s creation…,” which represents the beginning of all existence. When a Jew connects himself to Torah, he becomes master over the entire world, as also understood from Rashi’s commentary on the word Bereishis – “for the sake of the Torah, which is called Reishis and for the sake of the Jewish people, who are called Reishis”: when a Jew connects himself to “Bereishis” (i..e, to Torah), he too becomes master over the entire world (“The world was created for my sake”) – “the heavens and the earth.” Accordingly, we can better understand the saying of the Rebbeim that the way one establishes himself on Shabbos Parashas Bereishis, that is how the entire year goes. Therefore, this is an appropriate time to undertake good resolutions for the entire year.

Synopsis
Rashi states at the beginning of parashas Bereishis: “Rabbi Yitzchak said: The Torah need only have begun with ‘This month shall be for you…’...Why, then, did it begin with “In the beginning”… So that if the nations of the world will say, ‘You are robbers, for you conquered the lands of the seven nations,’ they will say them: ‘The entire earth belongs to the Holy One, blessed be He; He created it...When He wanted He gave it to them, and when He wanted He took it away from them and gave it to us.’” Seemingly, the “five-year-old studying Scripture” could ask: why did Hashem not give Eretz Yisroel to the Jewish people from the outset (in which case there would have been no need to change the order of the Torah)? The answser is as follows: Hasd Hashem given the land to Avraham when “Avraham was one,” or to the seventy souls in Yaakov’s time, the land would have remained a desolate wilderness with “snakes, vipers and serpents” etc. Additionally, it was given first to the nations so that when the Jewish people would enter the land, they would already find “great and good cities that you did not build, and houses full of all good things that you did not fill.” As for why the Jewish people were permitted to keep the homes and everything in them is also understood simply by the five-year-old studying Scripture: the rent that the nations should have paid for all the years they lived in Eretz Yisroel, which belongs to the Jewish people, would have been many times as much. If only this argument were made today as well – a true answer in accordance with Torah....

Synopsis
Although Rosh Hashanah is the Head of the Year, nevertheless, the entire month of Tishrei, whose letters spell “Beginning” (ראשית), also serves as a head of the year. Because the main part of the year, as a year in which one must work in the word to make it a dwelling place for Hashem, begins primarily after the month of Tishrei. During the month of Tishrei, even the days when work is permitted are under the influence of its Yomim Tovim, and therefore one’s involvement in mundane matters is not the same as during the rest of the year. When the Beis Hamikdash stood, this was seen openly because it took time until the people returned home after making the pilgrimage to the Beis Hamikdash etc.; from this it is regarding the spiritual service when the Beis Hamikdash is not standing, especially according to the Chabad custom, which is that Tachanun is not recited during the entire month of Tishrei. May it be Hashem’s will that this influence of the month of Tishrei last throughout the entire year, so that even the weekdays will be permeated with the Yomim Tovim of Tishrei and should feel like Yom Tov, and this will affect the manner one’s manner of work, and it will affect one’s success and Hashem’s blessing, and all the more so the Shabbosos and Yomim Tovim of the year.
