2026/10/15
There comes a point in nearly every ultramarathon where your mind starts telling you to quit. Your legs are destroyed, you're exhausted, and the thought of how many miles you have left feels absolutely overwhelming.
But what if you could train your mind to push through those moments, no matter how difficult things get?
In this episode, I'm sharing five powerful mental strategies that have helped me overcome some of the lowest moments in my ultrarunning career, and that we've used to help athletes at Everyday Ultra build the resilience to push through their toughest challenges.
In this episode, you'll learn:
How to mentally prepare for the hardest moments of an ultramarathon before they even happen
How to overcome negative thoughts when your mind is telling you to quit
How to build unshakable self-belief and confidence as an ultrarunner
A simple mental strategy that makes even the longest ultramarathons feel more manageable
Lessons from my darkest moments at Badwater 135, Tahoe 200, and Cocodona 250
Why your lowest point in a race doesn't have to determine how the rest of your race goes

Why One Bad Training Block Doesn't Define Your Race, with Matt Zupan
2026/09/29
Matt Zupan has built an ultrarunning career around doing a little bit of everything—from massive mountain linkups to some of the most competitive 100-mile races in the country. But his biggest lessons may have come from the races and training blocks that didn’t go according to plan.
Matt gets candid about failure, ego, pacing, expectations, and the mindset shift that helped him show up to Leadville with almost everything working against him. His story is a reminder that a messy training block doesn’t automatically mean a bad race and sometimes the biggest breakthrough comes from letting go of what you thought race day had to look like.
You’ll learn:•Why failed attempts can become some of your most valuable training•How to approach a race when your training block falls apart•Why controlling expectations can completely change race day•What mountains can teach you about handling the low points of an ultra•How to balance performance goals with the experiences that keep you motivated

As the official Backyard Ultra World Record holder, Phil has spent years learning how to manage his body, mindset, pacing, sleep, and crew through extreme endurance efforts. In this episode, he breaks down what he’s learned from going deeper than almost anyone else in the sport—and how those lessons can make you a smarter, stronger, and more resilient ultrarunner.
From pacing strategies and adapting your plan mid-race to handling the mental battles that come when your brain tells you to stop, Phil shares the principles behind his approach to going farther.
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why slowing down can be the key to going fartherHow to build a race plan that still allows flexibilityThe role your crew can play when fatigue takes overHow to handle the mental urge to quit Why focusing on one lap at a time can change your entire raceWhat Phil believes first-time backyard runners should avoidHow extreme endurance efforts are pushing the limits of the sport SHOW LINKS:

How to Pick Your Next Ultramarathon: Choose the Right Race, Goal, and Training Process
2026/09/03
Finished your last ultra and wondering what’s next?
Maybe you feel like you’re supposed to go farther. Run faster. Tackle a harder course. Chase a bigger race.
But the truth? Your next ultramarathon shouldn’t be based on what you think you’re supposed to do. It should be based on what will actually help you progress, excite you, and make the training process worth it.
In this episode, I break down the exact process I use for myself and with athletes to choose the right next race—and why picking the race first can actually be the wrong approach.
We cover:
How to decide whether you should go farther, get faster, or try something completely newWhy progression matters more than simply increasing distanceThe question you need to ask before committing to months of trainingHow to know if you actually have enough time to prepare for your goalHow your work, life, and personal schedule should influence your race calendarHow to build a race schedule that keeps you excited about ultrarunning for years to come

How to Make Your Training Less Stressful to Run Better with Tommy Lewis
2026/08/31
Ultra running has a funny way of exposing the difference between what you think makes you better and what actually does.
Tommy Lewis gets into the less obvious parts of becoming a better ultra runner—from building confidence before you feel ready, to understanding your limits, staying healthy enough to keep doing this for years, and knowing when your obsession with improvement has gone too far.
Tommy opens up about his own evolution as a runner, including the lessons that came from years of injuries, and difficult races.
In this episode you'll learn:
• Why confidence is built through action—not waiting until you feel ready• How to recognize when you’re doing too much• What your watch might be telling you that you don’t actually need to know• The overlooked skill that can make a huge difference late in an ultra• How to approach training with the long game in mind• What “Run the Runnable” actually looks like in practice• Why becoming a better runner might have less to do with running
