New Horror Movies Ep. 192: Dead Man Still Walking - Marvel Zombies (2025)
2026/10/08
Happy Halloween this month! Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents another special edition of Dead Man Still Walking, the Zombie Movie Podcast with Dr. Walking Dead. This time, Dr. Kyle Bishop welcomes guest Jay of the Dead to tackle Marvel's animated, four-part Marvel Zombies (2025). Though the series has the cumulative length and continuous plot of a feature film, its connection to What If…? leaves both hosts initially bewildered—and wondering why a story with "Zombies" in its title expects viewers to arrive with so much Marvel homework completed.
Dr. Bishop and Jay discuss the series' high-concept zombie mythology, including the quantum-virus outbreak, red-eyed undead under Scarlet Witch's control, and superpowered zombies who retain startlingly useful skills. They examine its blend of siege narrative, road-trip narrative, Marvel comedy, graphic animated violence, and increasingly kaleidoscopic superhero action. Along the way, they praise several returning voice performers, debate whether the series is truly satisfying zombie fare, celebrate some remarkably inventive undead kills, and explain why the finale earns its dark ending.
Note: This episode reveals major plot spoilers from "Marvel Zombies" (2025) and related Marvel properties.

Happy Halloween! Welcome to October — The Horror Month of Halloween! To kick off our spooky season's festivities, Episode 190 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents Volume 3 of Ron Martin's 50 for 50 Horror Special! That's right! The Infamous One, Ron Martin, The Cassandra of Horror Podcasting, continues his ambitious explorations of Horror films he's never seen to help celebrate his 50th year! For Volume 3 here, Ron brings a distinctly summer-flavored assortment of theatrical releases, slashers, vampire movies, campfire Horror, found-footage anthologies, and one very patriotic killer.
This time around, Ron reviews Backrooms (2026), Killer Workout (1987), Carnival of Souls (1962), Fever Lake (1997), Uncle Sam (1996), Vampire Lovers (1971), The Burning (1981), In the Mouth of Madness (1994), V/H/S/99 (2022), and Demonic (2015). New Horror Movies Ep. 189: Dead Man Still Walking - Burial Ground (1981) and Oasis of the Zombies (1982)
2026/09/26
It's alive … still. Well, more or less. Dead Man Still Walking, the Zombie Movie Podcast brought to you by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop, takes a double-feature plunge into early-1980s European zombie cinema. This time, Dr. Bishop examines Andrea Bianchi's Italian splatter oddity Burial Ground (1981) alongside Jesús Franco's desert-set Nazi-zombie snoozer, Oasis of the Zombies (1982).
First, Dr. Walking Dead finds surprising merit in Burial Ground, a gory, Fulci-influenced Italian zombie film full of shambling corpses, graveyard risings, grisly practical effects, and some outrageous storytelling choices. Then, Dr. Bishop turns to Oasis of the Zombies, a supposedly promising tale of undead Nazis guarding lost wartime gold — but one that he finds painfully dull, poorly assembled, and barely worth enduring for its few unsettling zombie images. Which film is a priority stream for gore hounds, and which one should be avoided at all costs? Join Dr. Kyle Bishop for this messy, mordant, and occasionally hilarious expedition into European zombie cinema.
Note: This episode contains major plot spoilers for Burial Ground and Oasis of the Zombies.
New Horror Movies Ep. 188: Oops! All Specialty Segments
2026/09/09
Pour yourself a bowl and sharpen the roof of your mouth because Episode 188 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies is serving Oops! All Specialty Segments — the podcast equivalent of picking every golden Cap'n Crunch square out of the milk and hoarding the berries for last. Jay begins with the perfectly reasonable story of how he once convinced missionary companion Eddie Marquez that he possessed prophetic powers, thanks to a cereal box spotted atop a stranger's refrigerator. From that sacred breakfast revelation springs an entire episode stripped of its usual format and crammed with the Horror Avengers' strangest, funniest, most personal obsessions. These are the segments that prove no corner of Horror is too shadowy, scholarly, slimy, or absurdly specific to investigate. You'll encounter a documentary best entered completely blind, a digital demon limping out of the early Internet, and a ranked menu of dinner scenes guaranteed to ruin your appetite. There is even a debate over whether "King Kong vs. Godzilla" is gloriously goofy or merely terrible (because peace was never an option). Nine Horror Avengers enter the cereal bowl; only the yellow squares have been removed. The result is sweet, jagged, colorful, and likely to leave your ears pleasantly scraped raw. (Ai writing is so weird…)
Along the way, the gang travels from silent Swedish dread and South Korean found footage to backwoods cannibals, PG-13 exorcisms, so-called "Elevated Horror," and the urgent cultural necessity of killer-hippo cinema! Jay asks listeners to say "hippopotamus" aloud at work, condemns "Hungry" for making the obvious Hungry Hungry Hippos joke, then immediately asks whether everyone has lost their marbles. Mister Watson breaks bread over 15 disturbing dinner scenes while admitting he cannot confidently explain why No. 12 outranks No. 5. Gillman Joel and Dr. Shock confront "Horrorvision," a movie so baffling that its ending inspires the show's spiritual image: everyone simply limping off into the distance. Yet amid the glorious nonsense, Episode 188 also makes room for genuine heart: Dr. Shock's remembrance of Judith Barsi and a warm, funny tribute to Dave Zee's podcasting career, including the revelation that this entire operation was built on meeting strange men online and that Dave Zee once determined it takes exactly 563 licks to reach the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop. It is an all-you-can-eat buffet of scholarship, tangents, friendship, monsters, marbles, and questionable life choices. This is what happens when Horror fandom is allowed off its leash. Bring a spoon, say grace, and as the part Cajun Gillman Joel says, "Stay swampy."

New Horror Movies Ep. 187: Dead Man Still Walking - Zombie Lake (1981) with guest Mister Watson
2026/08/31
And here we have another edition of Dead Man Still Walking, *the* Zombie Movie Podcast starring Dr. Walking Dead himself, the distinguished Dr. Kyle Bishop! For this embalmed but exhumed excursion into the murkiest depths of zombie cinema, the good doctor welcomes first-time DMSW guest Mister Watson — a man whose exceptional movie picks have earned him praise from Jay of the Dead. Naturally, Dr. Bishop rewards Watson's exemplary taste by subjecting him to a movie widely considered to be "one of the worst zombie movies ever made": Zombie Lake (1981). Set in a French village roughly 10 years after World War II, "Zombie Lake" concerns a squad of slain German soldiers whose bodies were dumped into a mysterious lake — only for the waterlogged Nazis to rise again and terrorize the townspeople.
Also in Episode 187, Dr. Walking Dead and Mister Watson discuss the film's painfully poor makeup, historically questionable uniforms, gratuitous Euro-sleaze, interminable flashback and truly baffling zombie behavior. Are these creatures flesh-eating zombies, blood-drinking vampires or merely undead horndogs with an irresistible attraction to skinny-dippers? And yet, buried beneath the green face paint and woeful execution, our reviewers discover the remains of a potentially compelling movie. The mythology of a lake that demands human sacrifices, a forbidden wartime romance, a zombie father who remembers and protects his daughter, and a community haunted by the consequences of its past all suggest that "Zombie Lake" might deserve that rarest of cinematic opportunities: a remake of a bad movie. Join Dr. Bishop and Mister Watson as they attempt to find intelligent thematic possibilities in a film that stubbornly refuses to contain them!
Note: This episode reveals major plot spoilers from "Zombie Lake" (1981).

New Horror Movies Ep. 185: Dead Man Still Walking - Nightmare City (1980)
2026/08/14
Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents the 63rd edition of Dead Man Still Walking, your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead Kyle William Bishop! This time, the good doctor returns to an older corner of zombie cinema with Umberto Lenzi's strange and unconventional Italian horror film "Nightmare City" (1980), a movie whose director apparently insisted was not a zombie movie, despite Dr. Bishop arriving at a very different diagnosis. And of course, as for me and my house, we will be believing Dr. Bishop's assessment. The infected creatures of "Nightmare City" are unlike your average shambling undead: They use knives, clubs, guns and even a harpoon gun; they appear capable of planning and communicating nonverbally; and instead of merely eating flesh, they sometimes stop to drink their victims' blood. That leaves Dr. Walking Dead pondering an especially unusual case of cinematic zombiism: Are these monsters zombies, infected humans, vampires or some bizarre hybrid of all three?
Kyle examines the monsters' apparent resistance to gunfire, vulnerability to brain trauma and ambiguous method of spreading their condition while arguing that, regardless of Lenzi's objections, "Nightmare City" belongs in the zombie movie conversation. Dr. Bishop also places the film firmly within the post-Romero zombie boom, noting its conspicuous similarities to "Night of the Living Dead," "Dawn of the Dead" and the Italian zombie films that followed in Romero's wake. Kyle discusses the Dawn-like music, helicopter imagery, siege elements, Molotov cocktails and the movie's heavy-handed warning about nuclear power and radiation. Along the way, Dr. Walking Dead praises the score, questions the inconsistent gore effects, calls out some dated and misogynistic character behavior and identifies "Nightmare City" as the sort of cinematic oddity that may be worth seeing precisely because it is so strange.
And then there is that ending. In a spoiler section, Dr. Walking Dead tackles the film's infamous last-minute narrative reset, recycled opening footage and "the nightmare becomes reality" conclusion — a twist that inspires considerably more frustration than admiration. Even so, the unusual zombie-vampire creatures and the movie's place within the history of Italian zombie cinema earn it a Low-Priority Rental recommendation rather than an outright Avoid.

New Horror Movies Ep. 184: Ron Martin's 50 for 50 Horror Special - Volume 2 of 5
2026/07/31
Welcome to the highly anticipated Episode 184 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, in which everyone's "favorite Horror Avenger" (and perhaps the most controversial one), Ron Martin — The Cassandra of Horror Podcasting — continues his milestone movie challenge worthy of his formidable Horror reputation. In celebration of turning 50 back on February 26, 2026, Ron has undertaken an ambitious cinematic mission: to watch 50 Horror movies he has never seen before during his 50th year! Rest assured, this is not merely a collection of familiar favorites, nostalgic rewatches, or comfortable genre standbys… Every selection must be a Horror film that Ron has never previously seen. No repeats. No fallback choices. Instead, Ron is tackling his own personal list of long-overdue "Must-See Horror Movies," neglected essentials, celebrated classics, and a handful of surprising blind spots that even he admits are slightly embarrassing. And in addition, he is randomly selecting films that he's just in the mood to watch at that time. But again, always and above all … films he has not yet seen!
Ron Martin's 50 for 50 Horror Special spans five total episodes, with 10 mini reviews featured in each volume. Throughout the series, Ron offers concise, insightful, and frequently fiery reactions to each movie, complete with ratings and recommendations, as he attempts to "fill in the holes" of his extensive Horror-viewing résumé. The films may come from physical media, streaming services, or theatrical releases. The only firm requirement is that Ron must be experiencing each title for the very first time! For a lifelong Horror authority, it is a daring, revealing, and endlessly intriguing undertaking. So, join us for Volume 2 of 5 as Ron continues his 50 for 50 Horror journey — facing down supposed classics, testing long-held expectations, addressing glaring omissions, and carrying on his relentless pursuit of Horror truth versus Horror myth!

New Horror Movies Ep. 183: Dead Man Still Walking - Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015) and Please Don't Feed the Children (2025)
2026/07/30
Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies presents the 62nd edition of Dead Man Still Walking, the Zombie Movie Podcast hosted by Dr. Walking Dead himself, Dr. Kyle Bishop! This episode offers a cinematic zombie twofer, beginning with Christopher Landon's irreverent teen comedy, "Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse" (2015), followed by the main event: Destry Allyn Spielberg's dystopian Gothic thriller, "Please Don't Feed the Children" (2025).
First, Dr. Bishop briefly ventures into the realm of gross-out humor, zombie strippers and scouting skills put to apocalyptic use. Although the film offers a surprisingly earnest message about friendship, loyalty, and resisting peer pressure, Kyle finds its juvenile sex jokes, scatological comedy and deliberately ridiculous zombies considerably less rewarding. There is, however, some praise for David Koechner's performance.
Then, Dr. Walking Dead turns his attention to "Please Don't Feed the Children," a slow-burning post-apocalyptic thriller in which young people are immune to a mysterious viral outbreak but are persecuted as suspected carriers. A group of fugitive teenagers takes refuge in an isolated farmhouse owned by the seemingly compassionate Clara, played by Michelle Dockery. Naturally, the safety of the house proves deceptive, and the movie's cleverly misleading title takes on a much darker meaning.
Dr. Kyle Bishop examines the film as a COVID-inspired narrative about disease, social paranoia, generational conflict and the dangerous rumors that accompany public-health crises. He also considers its Gothic atmosphere, solitary zombie, exploration of motherhood and obsessive love, as well as its depiction of the "monstrous mother." And what exactly is "Biddy Horror"—and how does it differ from Hagsploitation? Join the good doctor for a smart, spoiler-filled discussion of zombies, secrets, family, life, death and the unfortunate consequences of keeping an infected loved one locked in the basement.
Note: This episode contains major plot spoilers for both films, particularly "Please Don't Feed the Children."

New Horror Movies Ep. 181: Dead Man Still Walking - Dead of Night (1974) and Sugar Hill (1974)
2026/06/02
It's time for your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast brought to you by Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, which is here to present another fascinating edition of Dead Man Still Walking with Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop! This time, Dr. Bishop journeys back to 1974 for a double-feature exploration of two very different zombie films: Dead of Night (also known as "Deathdream") and Sugar Hill. One is a somber, politically charged meditation on the lingering trauma of the Vietnam War, while the other is a colorful blend of Blaxploitation cinema, voodoo lore, revenge storytelling, and classic raised-dead zombies.
In this episode, Kyle examines how Dead of Night uses zombiism as a powerful metaphor for veterans struggling to return home after war, creating one of the most emotionally devastating zombie narratives of the 1970s. He also discusses Sugar Hill as a noteworthy revival of the voodoo zombie tradition, connecting it to earlier zombie cinema while highlighting its campy entertainment value, memorable Baron Samedi character, and undead revenge squad. Along the way, Dr. Walking Dead reflects on the evolution of zombie films during the years between Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, offering historical context for this episode's two overlooked entries in zombie movie history.
Note: This episode contains spoilers for both Dead of Night (1974) and Sugar Hill (1974).

New Horror Movies Ep. 180: Don't 'Richard Kelly' Us
2026/05/31
Happy birthday to our very own GregaMortis today! I note that we are posting this episode on May 30, the Southern Gentleman's birthday. And now, it's finally time for another Monster Episode of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts! In Episode 180, your favorite Horror hosts brave fog-shrouded nightmare realms, claustrophobic oceans of blood, feminist Frankenstein chaos, regional shot-on-video monster madness, and even the emotional horrors of real life.
We bring you new Horror releases, including Return to Silent Hill (2026), Iron Lung (2026), and Maggie Gyllenhaal's controversial The Bride! (2026) with special guest and podcast-debut newcomer, Teresa de la Tenebre. GregaMortis also returns with another installment of his beloved Specialty Segment, Monsters on the Mantle, where he and Jay of the Dead discuss the influential 1953 monster classic The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms! Gillman Joel and Dr. Shock also dive into the regional, shot-on-video oddity, Franky and His Pals (1990). Plus: This episode a special interview with author Phyllis E. Pyles (Jay's Necro-MOM-icon) about her memoir, "Hey Vic: Breaking the Cycle of Abuse."
Through the course of this robust episode, we can boast of participation from nine of our 10 Horror Avengers: only Dave Zee is missing. But we also have two special guests — ladies, no less: Teresa de la Tenebre and Jay's Necro-MOM-icon, author Phyllis E. Pyles! We also bring you another one of our famous Muir Pick Group Reviews as Mister Watson selects Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992)! The Horror Avengers debate the film's strange legacy, its relationship to the beloved TV series, Joss Whedon's original intentions, Paul Reubens' unforgettable death scene, and whether Cinematic Nostalgia Disorder (CND) may be clouding everyone's judgment! And finally, Jay and Spawn of the Dead close out the episode with a surprisingly enthusiastic Final Cut review of The Butterfly Effect (2004), discovered in a nearly abandoned Walgreens DVD bargain bin like the physical-media treasure hunters they truly are. This episode is dedicated to Emily R. Join us!
New Horror Movies Ep. 179: Dead Man Still Walking - Weapons (2025)
2026/04/29
It's alive! Your favorite Zombie Movie Podcast shambles back into your ears once again — Dead Man Still Walking, starring the ever-insightful (and occasionally curmudgeonly) Dr. Walking Dead himself, Kyle William Bishop! In this episode, the good doctor is joined by none other than special guest Jay of the Dead for a thoughtful — and at times boisterous — discussion of "Weapons" (2025). In this edition, Dr. Bishop digs into a provocative question: Is Weapons actually more of a "true" zombie film than even the works of George A. Romero? It's a bold claim, and one that sparks plenty of analysis about what really defines a zombie narrative, beyond just shambling corpses and apocalyptic backdrops.
That said, it's not all praise. Dr. Bishop shares some pointed gripes, chief among them his distaste for the film's title, "Weapons," which he argues undersells the thematic depth and complexity of the story. But where the film truly wins him over is in its non-linear narrative structure, a storytelling approach he absolutely loves and champions throughout the episode. Meanwhile, Jay of the Dead brings his own observations to the table, noting how the characters in Weapons are united by a pervasive and unsettling theme: powerlessness. Whether facing societal collapse, personal limitations, or existential dread, the film's characters struggle against forces far beyond their control — a hallmark, perhaps, of the most effective zombie storytelling. Join Dr. Bishop and Jay of the Dead for another unforgettable trek into the undead.
Notes: This episode contains major plot spoilers for Weapons, so proceed with caution if you haven't seen it yet! This episode was recorded on August 14, 2025.

New Horror Movies Ep. 178: Welcome to Derry Season 1 and a Tribute to Joe Bob Briggs
2026/04/05
Happy Easter! He lives! The Tomb Is Empty! It's finally time for Episode 178 of Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, an atypical show with some live, "in-the-field" recordings. The show begins with an on-location excursion to "Burgertory," a Horror-themed restaurant in Salt Lake City, where a few of the Horror Avengers and Grisly Gus sample some macabre burgers! While they're out on the town, they review the zombie flick, "We Bury the Dead" (2026), which Dr. Walking Dead describes as a "post-zombie film" that reconsiders the undead as something more than monsters. Jay refers to it as a "Zzz Zzz Zombie" movie. These live segments also include an excerpt of a live jam session where the boys cover, "Careless Whisper," featuring Dr. Bishop on saxophone and lead vocals!
The second half of the episode transitions into spoiler territory with the Main Event: a full review of "It: Welcome to Derry Season 1" by Ron Martin and Dr. Walking Dead. And finally, the episode closes in a unique and heartfelt fashion, with Jay of the Dead's Tribute to Joe Bob Briggs following the cancellation of "The Last Drive-In" after seven seasons on Shudder. When it's all said and done, Episode 178 stands as a memorable and unconventional installment that blends Horror discussion, live music, theatrical outings, and tribute into one distinctive experience. We hope you enjoy it. Join us!
