The Engineer Has Forgotten to Pray | A Christian STEM College for Huntsville
2026/10/21
Huntsville runs on brains. Redstone Arsenal, NASA, Research Park, the defense and aerospace contractors. Throw a rock and you hit an engineer. Whoever forms those minds shapes the future of the city, and through it the state. Right now those minds are formed almost entirely in secular institutions. Jason Cherry wants to change that. Cherry is the board chairman of New Trinity Foundation, which is working to establish New Trinity College in Huntsville: a Christian liberal arts college built around STEM rather than beside it. He sits down with Bryan Dawson to make the case. His diagnosis is that American higher education has been cut in half. "The engineer has forgotten how to pray, and the poet has forgotten how to count." Two kinds of half-educated people, each needing what the other has. The word university comes from a Latin root meaning 'turned into one,' and by that standard, he argues, most universities are universities in name only. The physics department and the English department share a parking lot, a football team, and almost nothing else. He also tells the story of how Trinity Reformed Church started in a backyard with fifty people in lawn chairs during the 2020 shutdowns and now has nearly 600 members across two sites. TOPICS TACKLED: A church planted in a backyard during the 2020 shutdowns, and what grew out of it Why a math and science town is the right place for a Christian STEM college "The engineer has forgotten how to pray, and the poet has forgotten how to count" Universities in name only: what the word actually means and why the modern version fails its own test The creed every department on a secular campus shares, whether or not it says so Why siloed education may be throttling innovation, from Kepler to Heisenberg "Let no one ignorant of geometry enter," and what Plato was actually saying Huntsville's growth, its transplants, and what keeps a city from drifting Alabama's higher education ranking, and the private college gap with Florida CONNECT: New Trinity Foundation: https://www.newtrinityfoundation.org Jason Cherry's books and writing: https://www.jasoncherrybooks.com Trinity Reformed Church, Huntsville: https://trinityreformedhuntsville.wordpress.com His op-ed in 1819 News: https://1819news.com/news/item/jason-cherry-why-alabama-needs-a-new-college 🔹 MORE FROM 1819 NEWS: Website: https://1819news.com Support the mission: https://1819news.com/give Bryan Dawson on X: https://x.com/Bryan1819News Subscribe to 1819 News, like the video, and share this with anyone deciding where to send a kid to college.   #Huntsville #NewTrinityCollege #ClassicalChristianEducation #STEM #HigherEd #Alabama #Christendom #LiberalArts #ChristianEducation #1819News
Modern Evangelicalism Baptized Cowardice and Called It a Virtue | Michael Clary
2026/10/14
Bryan Dawson previewed this book last week. This week he has the author. Michael Clary is the founding pastor of Christ the King Church in Fort Thomas, Kentucky, and the author of "Loser Theology: Why the Weak Will Not Inherit the Earth." His argument is that a generation of conservative Christians was trained to hold the right convictions and never assert them, based on the theory that asserting anything is a grab for power and the godliest use of power is to lay it down. He names the three load-bearing pieces of it. Spectator spirituality, which shrinks the whole Christian life into the interior of the heart. The doormat doctrine, which treats suffering as the measure of faithfulness. And white flag Christianity, which "demands nothing, risks nothing, builds nothing, and protects nothing, convincing us this is the way God would have it." Clary tells his own story first. He was trained to be careful, learned that careful was really just afraid, and found that the bolder he got the more his church grew. Then the two of them work through what Christians are actually for: whether the outworking of the gospel is a ticket to heaven or the building of a civilization, why cowards are first on the list in Revelation 21, and why a man who refuses to use the authority God gave him has not avoided misusing it.   TOPICS TACKLED: What "loser theology" is, and why it works on people who hold conservative convictions The three tent pegs: spectator spirituality, the doormat doctrine, white flag Christianity Clary's own turn, and why boldness grew his church instead of emptying it Nefarious money or honest misreading? Why the answer is both "If you're talking about conservative politics you're threatening the gospel. If you're talking about liberal politics you're expressing the gospel." The endorsement he lost because the book criticized a man the endorser owed Why abdicated authority is still authority misused, from the home to the statehouse Twelve disciplines of high agency Christianity, and where an ordinary person starts Whether eschatology is the real driver, and Clary's answer   Contacts CONNECT WITH MICHAEL CLARY: Who Where Michael Clary @dmichaelclary · dmichaelclary.com Loser Theology losertheology.com · Canon Press His other writing        American Reformer · Center for Baptist Leadership Church Christ the King Church, Fort Thomas, Kentucky SUPPORT THE WORK: Every gift through December 31 is matched, up to $250,000 total.  Give: https://1819news.com/give  Bryan Dawson: [email protected]  Ashley Carter, donor development: [email protected] MORE FROM 1819 NEWS: Website: https://1819news.com Bryan Dawson on X: https://x.com/Bryan1819News   Hashtags #LoserTheology #MichaelClary #Christendom #Courage #Evangelicalism #HighAgency #BiblicalWorldview #Alabama #1819News #ChristianCivilization
DEI in Alabama Hospitals: What Do the Numbers Really Show?
2026/10/07
819 News is launching the Make Alabama Healthy initiative, and this episode makes the case for why. This initiative has two halves. One is investigative, covering reimbursement rates, hospital funding, and the staffing of Alabama's residency programs. Reporter Daniel Taylor is now dedicated to the beat full time, and the first numbers are already published, showing huge percentages of international medical graduates practicing at Baptist Health, Flowers Hospital in Dothan, UAB, and North Alabama Medical Center in Florence. These last ones are not rural hospitals, which makes this a pattern rather than just a shortage story. The other half of this initiative is personal responsibility, and Bryan Dawson starts with himself. He was 205 pounds and running four miles a day during his prison years. He came home, discovered processed food, and reached 317 pounds. Today, he is 261 pounds and walks three miles a day starting at 4:30 a.m. Dawson also tells the story of his mother's heart attack, the ambulance that took 45 minutes because a dispatcher did not understand the word cardiovascular, and the ICU team he credits with saving her life. Plus a preview of next week's guest, D. Michael Clary, author of "Loser Theology: Why the Weak Will Not Inherit the Earth."   Topics Tackled • Launching Make Alabama Healthy: one part investigative, one part personal responsibility • Why Alabama has no sidewalks, and what a culture of health actually looks like • 317 pounds to 261: prison fitness, processed food, and why only a caloric deficit worked • A heart attack, a 45-minute ambulance, and a dispatcher who did not understand the word cardiovascular • The residency numbers: what Daniel Taylor found at Baptist Health, UAB, Flowers, Mobile Infirmary, and more • Whether hospital grant funding is tied to diversity metrics, and what it would take to prove it • Reimbursement rates in Alabama versus Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee • Preview: "Loser Theology" and the courage American churches are not producing • The $250,000 year-end match, now through December 31   CONNECT THE REPORTING BEHIND THIS EPISODE: Baptist Health Montgomery leans heavily on international graduates to fill residencies: https://1819news.com/news/item/baptist-health-montgomery-leans-heavily-on-international-graduates-to-fill-residencies Foreign-trained physicians dominate many Alabama hospital residencies: https://1819news.com/news/item/foreign-trained-physicians-dominate-many-alabama-hospital-residencies   NEXT WEEK: D. Huntsville Has More in Common With Colorado Springs Than Cullman | Pastor Zach Carter
2026/09/30
Huntsville is one of the fastest growing metro areas in the country. Over the last five years, roughly one in four people who moved there came from cities that missiologists classify as post-Christian. Pastor Zach Carter has been modeling what that does to a county. His conclusion, delivered to rooms full of Madison and Limestone County pastors, is that the Huntsville area should now be treated less like Cullman and more like Colorado Springs. Bryan Dawson, who was born in Colorado Springs and watched Colorado go from reliably red to deep blue, knows exactly what that comparison means. Colorado Springs had Fort Carson, Peterson Air Force Base, NORAD, the Air Force Academy, Focus on the Family, and New Life Church. Military money, federal jobs, and Christian institutions were on every side. It secularized anyway. Carter's answer is not a political program. "The solution to dechurching is more churches. The solution to paganization is more churches." "Politics is downstream from culture, and culture is downstream from religion." Fenn Church, Property Rights, and reigning in Universities | Apryl Marie Fogel
2026/09/23
On October 1, HB 580 takes effect. It strips Alabama's faculty senates of the power they have spent decades accumulating and gives universities a process to review tenure and remove faculty with cause. Auburn moved first and didn't wait. The University of Alabama, whose faculty senate Apryl Marie Fogel calls the most ideologically captured in the state, is keeping theirs. Bryan Dawson sits down with Fogel, who directs the 1819 News Center for Education, for the full picture: what a faculty senate actually is, why presidents and trustees have spent years deferring to them, and what happens on the campuses if nobody uses the authority the legislature just handed them. They also cover the property rights fight the whole state is watching. Finn Church, a Shelby County landowner, just won a temporary injunction against Alabama Power in an eminent domain case that drew John Rich and national attention. And a bill the legislature thought was routine now means a right of way across a man's driveway can be leased out to telecom companies he never agreed to. "The things that tie your hands in one instance somehow don't exist in the second instance. Topics Tackled Finn Church wins a temporary injunction against Alabama Power in Shelby County Data centers, NDAs and the secrecy problem: why the process is making people angrier than the projects Why the legislature can move in days when it wants to and in years when it doesn't The Homewood police staffing fight and what it says about municipal priorities HB 580: what a faculty senate is, what it controlled, and what changes October 1 Why Auburn moved first, and why Alabama, Troy and others are keeping theirs Post-tenure review, the three laws already being violated, and what happens when one professor actually gets fired The UA School of Social Work, and a DEI advocate promoted to associate provost Connect Apryl Marie Fogel on X: https://x.com/aprylmarie Her work at 1819 News: https://1819news.com/author/apryl.marie   #Alabama #AlPolitics #HigherEd #HB580 #FacultySenate #PropertyRights #EminentDomain #DataCenters #BackTheBlue #1819News
Shark Tank for Christian Business | The Lions Den
2026/09/16
Billy Graham said one of the next great movements of God would be by believers in the marketplace. The men in this episode have spent twenty years proving he was right. Bryan Dawson sits down with the team behind The Lions Den, a Birmingham event best described as a Christian "Shark Tank." Companies from Africa, Asia, South America and right here at home present their business case to a panel of successful Christian businessmen who grill them on profit, social impact, creation care, and the one most organizations skip: the spiritual bottom line. This is the "trade, not aid" argument in practice. A bakery in a South African township that opened doors no missionary could open. A cheese factory and dairy in Moldova that grew from three employees to thirty and kept fathers from leaving the country to find work. A fried chicken chain, a bank and an IT company in Sierra Leone, the eighth poorest country on earth. A factory owner in China who says his ministry runs from eight to five. "There are ten to twenty times more business owners than there are pastors. What's going to change America and the world is business owners stewarding their companies in a way that has impact." TOPICS TACKLED: Why the sacred and secular divide has convinced Christian businessmen they are second-class citizens The quadruple bottom line: profit, social, spiritual, and creation care "Trade, not aid," and why starting businesses beats shipping rice Sierra Leone, Moldova, South Africa, China: what happens when a job replaces a handout How to measure spiritual impact in a business without turning it into a sales pitch Why pursuing the spiritual bottom line tends to produce the social one, and not the reverse The Lions Den format, who should attend, and what happens at the Professional Summit   THE LIONS DEN, OCTOBER 14-16, BIRMINGHAM: Tickets and details: https://www.thelionsden.us/tickets Event listing: https://businessasmission.com/resources/the-lions-den/  X / Twitter: https://x.com/bhmtld Promo Video: https://vimeo.com/1225717422?fl=pl&fe=sh Venue: The Harbert Center, 2019 4th Avenue North, Birmingham, AL 35203. We Sowed Bloodshed in the Womb. Now We're Reaping It in the Streets. | Seth Gruber
2026/09/09
A mother in Massachusetts strangled her three children. Her trial ended in a mistrial. A fundraiser tied to the case has now passed $1.2 million, with the goal raised to $3 million. Seth Gruber says none of this should surprise anyone. "All she's done is apply the pro-abortion ideology this side of the womb." Bryan Dawson sits down with Gruber, founder of The White Rose Resistance and author of The Last Stand: Christ or Chaos, The War For The West, for a hard conversation about why the family is the engine of civilization, why the left has understood that better than most pastors do, and why a gospel that stops at personal salvation leaves a culture defenseless. From Tom Holland's "Dominion" to Simone de Beauvoir's admission that women could not be trusted to choose motherhood freely, this is the argument that Christian civilization is not a bonus feature of the faith. It is the thing being fought over.   Topics Tackled Why the natural outworking of the gospel is the building of a civilization, not just individual conversions Tom Holland, "Dominion," and the agnostic historian's case that the West runs on borrowed Christian capital The Lindsay Clancy case, the mistrial, and what the reaction revealed on both the left and the right What the founders of modern feminism said out loud about destroying the family Simone de Beauvoir: "We cannot allow women to make that decision, because too many of them will choose it" Why the fiercest early opponents of women's suffrage were married American women JD Vance, family policy, and whether the right is willing to use power to rebuild the home The Last Stand: a documentary and book on Christian resistance, and how to host a screening   CONNECT WITH SETH GRUBER: The Last Stand film, host a screening: https://thelaststand.com/film/  The Last Stand book: https://thelaststand.com/book/ The White Rose Resistance: https://thewhiterose.life  Seth Gruber: https://sethgruber.com X / Twitter: https://x.com/sgruber91   #SethGruber #TheLastStand #WhiteRoseResistance #Christendom #ChristianCivilization #ProLife #Family #CultureWar #Alabama #1819News
The Story of US Attorney Phil Williams: from Army Ranger to US Attorney
2026/09/02
Army Ranger. Two combat tours. Youth pastor. State senator. Talk radio host. CNN contributor. And now the top federal prosecutor in Alabama’s largest federal district.   Bryan Dawson sits down with Phil Williams, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama, for the full story: the troubled kid who got shipped overseas to live with his father and met Christ in a youth choir in London; the reserve officer who was among the first Alabamians on the ground in Afghanistan after 9/11; the law student who came home from war and had to sue the Alabama State Bar to sit for the bar exam; and the day a lieutenant changed the convoy route for no reason he could explain and a car bomb went off on the road they were supposed to be on.   Five years ago, Phil and Bryan were launching Rightside Radio and 1819 News out of the same building, betting that Alabama could become an outpost of freedom. This is the story of what God did with that bet.   “Personnel is policy.” When the nomination came, Phil said no. Public Schools Are Discipling Your Kids | Pastor Rich Lusk
2026/08/26
Is your child's education actually neutral? In this episode, 1819 News sits down with Pastor Rich Lusk (Trinity Presbyterian Church / Trinity Classical Academy) to argue that no classroom is neutral—every school disciples children into someone's kingdom. Lusk makes the biblical and historical case that Christian children need a thoroughly Christian education and why this is the front line of the culture war. From Deuteronomy 6 and Ephesians 6 to the Greek concept of "paideia," and from Horace Mann and John Dewey to King Alfred the Great, this is a blueprint for rebuilding Christian civilization one child at a time. "Progressives don't reproduce in the bedroom, they reproduce in the classroom." If you're a Christian parent, this one is for you. TOPICS TACKLED: The myth of "neutral" education and secular humanism as an established state religion Who owns your children — God, the state, or Satan? What does the future of the Alabama Republican Party look like? On this episode of 1819 News: The Podcast, host Bryan Dawson sits down with Alabama Republican Party Chairman Scott Stadthagen for a wide-ranging conversation about the future of the GOP, engaging the next generation, voter turnout, election integrity, and the fight to close Alabama’s party primaries. Stadthagen shares the story of his journey from House Majority Leader to ALGOP Chairman and explains why he believes conservatives must focus on creating a generational impact. Dawson and Stadthagen discuss Project Future Generation, an initiative aimed at bringing young Alabamians into the Republican Party and developing the next generation of conservative voters and leaders. They also tackle: • Why Alabama’s voter turnout is far too low • The growing political engagement of Gen Z • Project Future Generation and its plans for young conservatives • Why Stadthagen wants to close Alabama’s party primaries • Election integrity and voter fraud enforcement • Building Republican strength in local races • The importance of sheriffs, school boards, county commissioners and other local offices • The new conservative leadership emerging across Alabama • Bridging the gap between the Alabama Republican Party and Republican legislators • What it will take for Republicans to win—and continue winning—in Alabama With a new generation becoming increasingly engaged in politics, Stadthagen believes the Alabama GOP has an opportunity to build something much bigger than the next election cycle. Foxes Guarding the Henhouse: Living in an Upside Down World
2026/08/12
Who is actually guarding the institutions Americans are supposed to trust? This week, Bryan Dawson takes on what he sees as an upside-down reality across the country—beginning with a bizarre TSA experience in Seattle and expanding into a much bigger conversation about airport security, public schools, immigration, cultural change, and the people entrusted with protecting the public. Dawson also revisits stories reported by 1819 News involving Alabama educators, asks why warning signs are so often ignored by those in authority, and argues that fear of being labeled or criticized has made leaders unwilling to make common-sense decisions. The episode ultimately turns to immigration, the “Great Replacement” debate, Western identity, and Dawson’s argument that Americans need to pay closer attention to the cultural and demographic changes happening around them. In this episode: * Dawson’s bizarre experience with TSA in Seattle * Airport security and who we trust to protect travelers * Alabama schools and controversies involving educators * Why institutional leaders ignore warning signs * Immigration, refugees, and cultural assimilation * The “Great Replacement” debate * Western identity, borders, and America’s future * Why Dawson says Americans need to “wake up” Subscribe to 1819 News for more Alabama news, commentary, investigations, and conversations.
