Oilers get a run of monster offensive performances from the defence
2026/01/28
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' defence coming up big, Edmonton's 10th attempt at winning three straight, Josh Samanski's first NHL game, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a look at the Jasper Pond Hockey tournament and how this year's tournament was as amazing as ever. That gave me another chance to talk about how everyone needs to get involved if you're able, because it really is an experience like no other. Shifting back to the Oilers, I started with the run of NHL records set by Edmonton's defence, and how unreal that run of secondary scoring has been. We all want the Oilers to score more goals, but I think you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who expected such an explosion from the back end. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating before closing out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes ranged from what you're nerdy about to Oilers talk and everything in between. The voicemail is the best way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Having all of you in the mix makes the show so much better. Want to leave a voicemail for next week’s show? Winning three straight is the Oilers' Everest
2026/01/21
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' inability to string wins together, Tristan Jarry's first home start, Curtis Lazar's 600th game, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a quick recap of Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' 1000th game and how cool it was to be in the building for the milestone. Next up was a discussion about why the Oilers cannot seem to win three straight games to save their lives. They've had nine opportunities to string some wins together this season, but for whatever reason, they simply cannot get that third one to go through. Last night, the boys played for 20 minutes instead of a full sixty, but the result was the same. I also spent a few minutes talking about Curtis Lazar's 600th NHL game, and how he's turned himself into a player I want to see in Edmonton's lineup every night. Oilers get Tristan Jarry and Jake Walman back, and the non-McDavid heaters
2026/01/14
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about Connor McDavid' heater, Tristan Jarry's return, Jake Walman, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a look at the heaters that are happening throughout the Oilers' lineup right now, and while Connor McDavid is understandably getting all of the attention, there are a couple of other guys who are nearly as hot as the captain. From there, I offered the latest updates on Trent Frederic and Andrew Mangiapane after both guys returned to the lineup this past week, following some well-deserved time in the press box. Finally, I tried to figure out what to expect from Edmonton's goaltending situation after Tristan Jarry returned to the crease Tuesday night in Nashville. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about windrows, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun for me to listen to. The voicemail is the best way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' 500th assist, Oilers trade rumours, and healthy scratches
2026/01/07
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' 500th assist, more Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours, healthy scratches, Connor McDavid's heater, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a look at Ryan Nugent-Hopkins reaching the 500 assist mark in Tuesday's game against the Nashville Predators. Nuge isn't the flashiest player on the roster with Connor and Leon ahead of him, but that didn't stop me from gushing about my guy for a few minutes as he inches closer to 1000 NHL games. I also looked at Kasperi Kapanen's comeback and how quickly he made an impact. From there, I had to touch on the frustration many of us felt yesterday when we saw that both Andrew Mangiapane and Trent Frederic were healthy scratches against the Preds. And the worst part? It didn't look like it mattered. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun for me to listen to. The voicemail is the best way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Closing out 2025, Andrew Mangiapane rumours, and time is a flat circle
2025/12/31
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers year in review, Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours, Calvin Pickard, Connor McDavid's heater, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a look at the Andrew Mangiapane trade rumours that kicked off this past week. Given that we haven't even made it to the midway point of his first season as an Oiler, it's hard to understand why these UFA veterans keep going sideways once they land in Edmonton. Is it a role thing? Is it too hard to play with Connor or Leon? I also spent some time on Calvin Pickard's incredible showing against the Winnipeg Jets, and gave the Oilers' backup plenty of love for stepping up when the team needed him. Is our pal Cal doing enough to save his Oilers career? Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was quiet again this week, but everyone's takes were still all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Oilers win the Jarry vs. Skinner game, and Leon Draisaitl's 1000th point
2025/12/17
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Jarry vs. Skinner game, Vasily Podkolzin's progression, and much more. I kicked off this week's episode with a look back at last night's matchup between the Oilers and Penguins. Obviously, this game was on everyone's mind, as it would be the first head-to-head between Tristan Jarry and Stuart Skinner since they were traded for each other only four days before. As much as I was thrilled about the result, it was also hard not to feel bad for our former friend while he was getting shelled by his old club. Not only did Skinner get pumped for five goals, but he also had to stand in his crease while the Leon Draisaitl 1000-point celebration was happening only feet to his left. Needless to say, it was one of the weirder December wins we could have ever watched. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating about winter driving, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was hilarious again this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. EMERGENCY POD: Oilers trade Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak for Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin
2025/12/12
Despite beating the Red Wings 4-1 last night, the Edmonton Oilers pulled the trigger on a Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak for Tristan Jarry and Samuel Poulin trade with Pittsburgh. They also sent a 3rd round pick to Nashville in exchange for Spencer Stastney as a means of replacing Kulak. All of this happening before 9 in the morning? Holy hell. Hosted on Acast. Oilers win two beauties then lose to Buffalo... round and round we go.
2025/12/10
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about whether the Oilers are actually turning the corner, playing down to competition, some love for Vasily Podkolzin, and much more. We were having a fun handful of days before last night's loss to the Sabres, weren't we? After demolishing the Seattle Kraken and Winnipeg Jets, Oilers fans were feeling pretty good about where the team was at. Unfortunately, feeling better about the team made last night's loss to the Buffalo Sabres land like a Looney Tunes-style anvil on the head. Despite being the better team, the Oilers were outworked for most of the first two periods, setting up another incredibly frustrating loss. And what started as a day filled with hope ended in a disappointing finish that should have been avoided from the start. Getting one point was nice, but missing out on the second sure looks like a problem. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Dooks, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was hilarious again this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. No one wants to talk about Oilers silver linings after losses but I do
2025/12/03
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about whether the Oilers are turning the corner, kept up with the goalie rumours, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins' return, and much more. Just when you might be reaching max frustration levels, I'm back with another round of wondering if the Edmonton Oilers are finally turning the corner. After a strong showing in Seattle on the weekend, the Oilers returned home to face the red-hot Minnesota Wild, and I'm wondering if I'm the only one who wasn't overly pissed off about that loss. I also checked in on the latest round of goalie rumours after things had quietened down quite a bit in terms of Stan Bowman pulling the trigger to get one. Will we get a new goalie before the off-season? Is Stuart Skinner heating up, pushing off the decision for a while longer? Only time will give us the answers, but that didn't stop me from wading in with my takes anyway. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Kyle, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. Oilers blown out again, goalie rumours, and a whole lot of defensive problems
2025/11/26
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' most recent blowout, goalie rumours, players coming back from injuries, and much more. Just when you think the Edmonton Oilers might be turning things around, we've got another debacle on home ice that has the fanbase questioning their sanity and what the hell is going on around here. After a strong finish to their seven-game road trip, the Oilers returned home to get completely dismantled by the visiting Dallas Stars, and that loss has people running through the same old questions again. When will Stan Bowman trade for a goalie? Do they need more help on defence? Can this team figure it out? Only time will give us the answers, but that didn't stop me from wading in with my takes anyway. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a guest Righteous Sack Beating from Eoin, then closed out the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and everyone's takes were all over the map and very fun to listen to. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode. More Oilers struggles, injuries, and a sense that the sky is falling
2025/11/19
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Oilers' offensive struggles, Darnell Nurse rumours, more injuries, and much more. Just when you think the Edmonton Oilers might be turning the corner, another catastrophic loss sends the fanbase back into a spiral, and that's happened after the 5-1 beatdown in Buffalo on Monday. Not only did the boys lose to the worst team in the Eastern Conference, but they never even looked like they were in the fight. And when you lose a game that badly to a team as mediocre as the Sabres, the result is another round of questions about the team's construction, the guys who are struggling, and everything in between. Never a dull moment around here. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the LRT construction, then wrapped up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was alive this week, and hearing everyone's takes was so much fun. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. The Oilers rollercoaster goes zoom Pt. 3084
2025/11/12
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster making another loop, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to recap it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about spending a couple of days in Toronto and Montreal, the Oilers' comeback against Columbus, Trent Frederic's fight, and much more. It's a strange time to be an Edmonton Oilers fan. We have high expectations for the team around these parts, and for the third year in a row, their start to the season has been anything but spectacular. It gets even more interesting when I've been to Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal in a single week. Sticking with the Oilers, how could you not talk about the wild game they had against Columbus, when the team both got booed on home ice and also came back for the win? Part of the story from Monday night was the fight Trent Frederic got into with Mathieu Olivier, and it didn't take long to see the mismatch there when the boys started chuckin' 'em. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about airport food prices, then wrapped up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was very quiet again this week, but the limited messages were still fun anyway. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Oilers rollercoaster goes zoom, depth scoring, and the World Series
2025/10/29
It's been another wild week around here with the Oilers rollercoaster zooming up and down, and I've got a fresh episode of Better Lait Than Never ready to cover it all. On today’s podcast, I talked about the Nation Vacation to Vancouver, the Oilers' recent run of games, Isaac Howard's steady improvements, Jack Roslovic settling in, and much more. After wrapping up the intro with a full breakdown of the Vancouver Nation Vacation, I dove into the rollercoaster that is being an Edmonton Oilers fan in 2025. While the Oilers' record isn't actually that bad, the inconsistencies from game to game are undoubtedly frustrating. How the team can go from sloppy and disorganized, as we saw for long stretches against Seattle and Vancouver, to being a total wrecking ball against the Utah Mammoth makes no sense whatsoever. Even though we're used to knowing how well Edmonton can play and watching them fall short of that bar early in the season, that doesn't make the frustration any less, even if no one is particularly worried in the long term. Finally, I wrapped up this week's episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about player fines before wrapping up the podcast with another round of voicemails. The voicemail was very quiet again this week, but the limited messages were still fun regardless. The voicemail is my favourite way to wrap up the show and give everyone a chance to share their thoughts. Another hearty thank you to everyone who contributed to this week's episode.
